  1. I enjoy that he writes everything like it's the title of a book or movie...hope he kept the receipt on his the (The?) Ohio State University education...haha

I have liked what I have seen from him though, hope he comes back good next season with a better supporting cast...

  2. The "Generation X" Pittsburgh Penguins were also a young team, but they never came around...why?

    Two reasons:

    1. The young players weren't good. They were young, but they had limited to no upside.

    2. Any upside they might have had was lost by poor coaching who couldn't develop players (I coach ice hockey, development is not just about going out and playing games...you need to practice skills, build players up piece by piece, players don't just get better like a video game...you need to develop them from a technical perspective).

40 players suited up for the Penguins in 2004, only 8 were still in the league (in the league!) in 2007. Only like four of them even stuck with the team past 2007...three fourth liners, two bottom pair defensemen, then Ryan Malone (2nd line winger), Brooks Orpik (second pair d-man) and Marc-Andre Fleury (starting goalie).

Apologies for the hockey analogy (it's all I know) but just because you're young doesn't mean you're going to be good, doesn't mean you're going to get better...that doesn't mean that we're going to be like the 2004 Penguins, but I'm just saying, it's not video game...players don't just develop linearly...I don't know if we have young talent with a steep development arc, I really don't...but just playing young players and thinking that will create a super team in three or four years is not necessarily right...

  3. Well...that wouldn't fall under "clutch" then...

People need to consider statistics in the context of the system/tactics that are employed.

If game nuance isn't for you (royal you), I kind of like red zone passing metrics. It's in a small window, so accuracy and timing is on high. And it should be best on best in that area of the field, so you aren't playing against muppets usually...

From 2015 thru 2017 (min. 75 attempts) here are the players in red zone passing sorted by passer rating...(not perfect: McCown, Hoyer looking good is wrong, Wilson and Carr looking bad is wrong...but no statistic is perfect, just a potential foundation)

  4. The loss is that the guy is allegedly for a cause (which he has stated he would trade in his beliefs for a job, so...ya know, he is easily bought and sold, which is a good trait to have in pro sports) and then creates a distraction with a spotlight only on him, he will get nothing out of it (I mean, does it take collusion to keep an expensive bad player with a ton of baggage out of the league? There are a ton of cheap bad players that will just sit there and not create distractions) and cheapen what would otherwise be a rather noble cause (see: Bennett, Michael). Throwing literal % at the wall is actually not a good thing in these instances, it detracts from the message. You want the opposite: single stream, single message and on point for the cause. You don't want to expose yourself to a lot of situations that can be used against you/your cause...this has a very high chance of being negative for whatever CK supports today...

  5. I mean, for starters, Luck has played in a mostly one-dimensional vertical offense since he's been in the league. Kap has been in anything but...so I would expect a QB that only has to throw it 6 yards per play to have a moderately higher completion percentage almost regardless of talent. Speaking of talent, Kap does not have very much. Though he is a good athlete...those are not the same thing, of course.

  6. Yeah, Dak has not been very good this year. The point is, and this is true in hockey too, you can walk in with athletic tools and do work (RG3, Kaepernick, etc) but once everyone has the film on you and learns your tendencies, if you don't have the mental ability to adapt to their adaptation, if you can't let your mind do some of the work, you wash out of the league...

That said, I do think Watson can think the game at a higher level than those losers. My issue with Watson is his setup and arm mechanics...we'll see if he can clean that up...

  7. Has anyone made a form tackle this year, including Hooker? Most of our guys just fly up and try to torpedo a guy by leaping into their thigh shoulder-first...I would chalk it up to certain players just being poor tacklers, but since everyone does it, I assume it's just poor coaching. Sorry, I know that's a subject for every other thread...
