  1. I've never found Mariota to be that impressive. Good athlete, for sure. So maybe early in his career, he'll have some success moving the ball...but as teams start to hem him in and make him throw the ball more, I think he'll have problems.

On the other hand, and apparently, this is unpopular, but I can only go by what I see...I think Bortles has some pretty decent upside...I'm not sure I'd use the word "threat" to describe anyone in the division right this second...

  2. ^ That person gets it.

People would be very surprised how fast professional sports happen at ground level. Even a slower game like football where there is a sixty second break every seven seconds or whatever it is...it still happens so fast in that active play time.

  3. I'd be surprised that there is not a referee "review board" of sorts...there is one in the NHL, and that's just about the hardest sport to officiate, I'd be shocked if the NFL let the refs go without any supervision...

Though I will say, everyone complains about officiating but the only idea or suggestion is: "be better, so it's good" - easier said than done...

  4. I shouldn't nitpick. But I find a two score game and a three score game to be a big difference. I also don't mean to establish myself as a blind homer so early in my time here, but when up 17+ in the 4th quarter:

Brady has more than 28% more pass attempts (223) than any other player: Manning (174), Brees (133), Favre (112), Warner (89).

Brady has 16 TDs in these situations as well: Manning (11), Rodgers (9), Brees (8), Rivers (7).

About one-fifth of these attempts came in the ultimate "stat-pad", as per our discussion, season of all-time in 2007. Whereas Manning in the same situation in his record-breaking 2013 season was a measly 7 of 10 for ~100 yards...in 2004, 5 of 9 for 50 yards and a TD.

You can make stats say whatever you want, I know, that's why I don't rely on them to evaluate talent...but I think it was pretty obvious while watching it and these numbers go some distance to confirm it, the Patriots were after that record so hard in 2007...

  5. I only glanced at the thread, as it seems like a lot bluster...but talking about blow-outs and TD throws, Brady is all the time leader in TD passes thrown when up 28+ points in the second half. Also has by far (relatively speaking) the most when up 17+ in the 4th quarter...I'm not sure if that counts as evidence or what...

Tangent: Given some of the running games and backs we've had over the years, I'd rather win these 10 point games or whatever by having the best player on the field touching the ball...10-point games, in my estimation, are not blowouts...

  6. No that's the thing. It's not over guaranteed money. The entire contract is guaranteed, and always was going to be. The question was whether those guarantees are offset by another contract he might sign in the future. So if he's terrible and gets cut in two years, he still gets paid the full value of the contract, no matter what. That was never the issue.

Oh, hmph, I didn't think the salary money was guaranteed. Well, that is interesting then...

  7. Some players bet on themselves in contract situations.

This is, in effect, betting AGAINST yourself

Honestly, and maybe this post will look foolish in three to five years...but I'd take every precaution too if I was Mariota...I don't think he's going to be that good, so getting - what I'd guess - a portion of his contract regardless of being cut or whatever is a good move...

Though, you're right, weird to see what is allegedly a franchise player betting against himself so hard...

  8. Just like with Harrison, who kind of floated out there a bit before finally just fading into memory...I really hope Reggie doesn't play in another uniform, I don't want to see him put a different jersey on. As selfish as that may be...

And maybe rivalries in the NFL aren't as strong as they used to be...really all sports have had a little drain on rivalries due, in some part, to free agency and what not...but you don't sign with a rival like that. You fought tooth and nail to destroy those guys every year of your career basically, don't put that jersey on now...
