It happened, but not because of Collins. Kittles crossed his face or got behind him multiple times, and then Collins chased him down or another player over the top contained him.

However we classify that game, it's not evidence that Collins can adequately cover TEs. It's actually evidence that he cannot cover TEs, especially good TEs. And that's not news, or at least it shouldn't be.

To be fair, not many can adequately cover elite TE's in this league.  Kittle, Kelce, Ertz, Gronk.

Kittle caught nine of ten passes thrown his way, for 83 yards. That's "a good job"? Would anyone say Geathers did a good job if any TE put up those numbers against us? And then, watching the clip video, Kittle basically cooked Collins several times in man coverage.

And this is not a new idea. Collins struggled in coverage coming out of Alabama, he struggled in coverage when he got to NY, he had a couple seasons where he did a decent job in certain situations, but he's never been a good cover man. It shouldn't even be up for debate. Collins isn't good in coverage, it's an established fact.

The only thing worth considering is whether you can fit him into our defense, and if so, what kind of improvement he'd bring. Especially in comparison to other options who are actually decent in coverage, or better. HHCD is better in coverage, so is Adrian Phillips. Amos is a FS so he's probably not on the radar, but he's much better in coverage. And there are safeties in the draft that already cover better than Collins, and will come at a third of the cost, or less.

Again, I'm neutral on Collins. It seems like people just want him because he's the big name, and are willing to disregard his actual play. Like Ballard says, if you add a guy, you better have a plan for him, and that's definitely true here. Because if you intend to play man coverage on critical downs (they've said as much), and you intend to use Collins in man coverage (how do you not use your strong safety in that capacity?), it's gonna be a problem, especially against good TEs and slot receivers.

Yes.  I have a funny feeling Eberflus would be really happy with 9 catches for 83 yards.  His entire mantra is keep everything in front of you, and tackle well.  Sounds to me like that is what happened.  Anyone with 9 catches, and averages about 9 yards/catch is really low.  Especially Kittle.

But also, The biggest thing is, we need a key player for our pass rush.  IF (big if here) we can get on or two good pass rushers, that fit Eberflus' scheme, then Collins/Hooker combo is perfect.  QB's would be forced to throw quicker, and Collins could then use his athleticism and size to his advantage. The Giants were the 2nd worst team in the NFL in sacks last year. Meaning the DB's had to play coverage forever. No help from the front 7.  Even though we could use a premiere pass rusher, we were not nearly as bad off as the Giants.

I understand the argument against Collins. He certainly has his limitations which I think were exposed in a defense void of talent like NY. However, I think him coming to INDY with the pieces we already have make alot of sense and will improve his play

    This.

Frankly, Collins had too much on his plate in N.Y.  He second guessed himself a lot because he knew the guys around him was bad.

On this defense, the secondary is pretty disciplined.  And with Hooker back there, he can be let loose to make plays, and not worry about whether or not this CB, or that safety , can handle his job.

Collins play's press coverage against TE's very well.  But he's not a CB, he doesn't belong 1-1 with top WR's.  He's play's in the box, and either plays the run, or cover's TE's.  And he does both very well.

  4. My biggest takeaway from this re-signing is him saying :

“The locker room that’s here and the people that Chris and coach has brought in, and the chemistry that we have now, it was something I didn’t want to change out for anything else."

This makes me think what the coaches have been saying is very much real and tangible.  Might be a player selling tool to other free agents like Collins.  Hooker is good friends with him, so maybe we really have a shot with him.

Hunt was a very solid piece to the D-line.  was top 20 in NFL in TFL's also.

Does anyone listen to For the Colture podcasts on YouTube. I think they are great. I have been listening to old ones where they did Pagono spoofs and they have me laughing. It’s cool to hear two fans talk about the colts and not some media guys.

Believe it or not, them and Kevin Bowen are the reason I decided to go into that field.

I also enjoy this guys youtube vids...he does a great job doing highlights.

On NFLN.  Just heard Reggie Bush say colts should sing Petersen.

    Thoughts concerns comments!!!

he could be a good mentor and he still produces.    And he needs a ring   We can get him one

I just don't think it'll happen.  Ballard let go of Frank, he is solid short yardage though.  I just don't think Ballard would go there, even on a deal on the cheap.

But I do like Peterson, and think he could still be a viable help to a team.

There isn't a problem with wanting a pounder on the team with me.  You initially said you miss Gore everyday.  The gist of my reply was, it was time for Gore to move on and for Mack to take the reigns of this team.  Gore is still a primary back or very close to it, someone of his caliber likely doesn't want to play on a team where he only sees the ball on 3rd/4th and 1 and the goal line.

As I said in my previous post.  It would be nice to a pounder for certain situations, but that guy would have to be someone who knew his primary role on the team, with this offense, would be to see the field very little since we have a primary back in Marlon who will get the bulk of carries and the primary change of pace guy is Hines who is used as a receiver and a Sproles-type.

I think with the quality OL we have, Marlon is just fine and weather wouldn't limit him any more than it would a true pounder.  The use for a pounder on this team would be a guy to pick up a 4th and 1 or a goal-line situation.  Otherwise, a guy who is simply a pounder would not be used very much in this offense.

We may already have our pounder in Jonathan Williams (or maybe Rathman is going to work hard on coaching Jordan Wilkins into being able to use his size to be a pounder in certain instances, that is Wilkins' major knock is he runs smaller than he is).  To go out and look for a true pounder, we probably would have a hard time getting an elite guy or a guy of Gore's level, we'd have to find someone willing to accept that his playing time would be limited to very specific situations.

Wilkins' problem is he doesn't consistently carry high and tight.  A lot of times his forearm drops, and the nose of the ball comes down away from his body as he is running, giving an open space for defenders to get their hands on the ball and wedge it out of his grasp.

Until he learns to protect the football better with his fundamentals, his roles will be limited.

As a runner, he is absolutely fabulous.  He has some of the smoothest cuts I've ever seen.

But you are a bit right that he doesn't carry his weight and size the way most his size do.  But neither did Eric Dickerson.  Very similar running styles for bigger backs. (NOT saying Wilkins is in any way as good as Dickerson was).

I’ve had the pleasure to listen to your podcasts.   I hope everyone gets a chance to listen.     With that said. I am not as much a fan of Mack as you are.   We can do much better

That's fine.  We all like different things.  Is why it is a discussion.  But thanks for your support! I'm always up for debates, as long as they are kept intellectual, and don't get so heated someone pop's off and says something that attacks the other person's character because they don't agree.  There are people everywhere like that. :(

  9. Both PFF and Football Outsiders ranked Marlon Mack as on of the best RB's in the NFL at Yards after Contact.  I think what a lot of people do not see is how Mack makes just sleight moves to avoid full contact and run through arm tackles at or near the line of scrimmage.  What most of us see is when he is hit full force, and Mack is stopped in his tracks.  Even then though, he does fall forward the majority of the time.  Mack's physical size and statue requires him to be elusive.  And if you watch his tape closely, he does so ever so slightly when he's about to make contact with someone, especially running through a hole at the line of scrimmage.

Also we saw a lot of him trying that same move in the open field against DB's, and it didn't work against them because they are normally nimble enough to make those sleight corrections, where linebackers and linemen have a harder time.  He Discovered much later in the season, and into the playoff's  he had to make more drastic cuts vrs those type of defenders.

With that knowledge and growth, I fully expect an even better 2019 season from Mack.

Hopefully Mudd can also work with Rathman some, and get Mack better at catching a screen pass.  This was something the Colts did very well when Mudd was the O-line coach rhe first time around.

They know that this run is going to end for them. The Colts are poised when several division titles over the next few years and Houston knows that. I think it's funny that tweet one out. It's a omen but the Colts will be division champions in 2019

I disagree.  Many Texans fans honestly think they will own the division for years to come because of their few superstar's they have.  Most of them honestly believe  Watson is better than Luck, and their offense is as well.  Let alone the fact that even though we were a top 10 defense last year, no fan in the NFL other than Colts fans knows this.  They  still think we have a terrible defense.

No fans hate the Colts more than the Texans fans and they make no bones about it. I have to laugh every time I hear the radio folks dig in on the Colts. I never wear my Colts shirts to games at Houston for the simple reason I am not ready to be killed in the parking lot after the game.:shout:

Remember Clowney jumping offside ending the Texans chance to win the game. It burns deep in the heart of Houston. So sad, yet so funny.

I absolutely believe you.  I have read articles, and listened to a lot of Texans podcast's.  They make zero excuses for hating Indy.

But I think Titans fans might actually hate Indy more.  Their hatred burns so deep because they haven't won a game against Andrew luck...ever.  And before that, Manning had their number as well.

  12. IDK, In a 4-3, you want all your down linemen to be quick of the ball, and able to get penetration.  If an O-lineman get's his full block on you, then you are stopped, and the linebackers have a clogged lane they can't run through to make a play.  Obviously, you want your edges to be a bit smaller, and faster, but you don't want 300+ guys at DT in that scheme.  All it takes is 1 guy on the line to beat his block off the ball, and it redirects a run play, or stuff's it behind the line.  So if the lineman beats his blocker, and the blocker has to move with him to block him out of the play, that leaves a big hole for a linebacker to move into to blow things up.  So either way, you want that penetration from all your linemen in that scheme.

  13. Everyone is focusing on Luck.  If you read my full post, I put out multiple suggestions as to the possible reason why our screen plays don't work well.

I personally don't think it is ALL on Luck, but believe a portion of it is.

I think all those reason's I posted have a part to play in why they do not work well for us.

Hopefully with Reich as HC he will be able to improve that. Luck has coaching for the first time in his career. Hopefully a old dog can learn new tricks.

Luck improved his decision making over time, and his release this past year.  I'm sure he can add other tools as needed if he works on them.

  15. I ask this, to you esteemed peers, because I have noticed it all season.  We have the personnel, on paper. to effectively run RB screen plays well. Our O-line, and WR's all seem to block so well for a run play.  Even on tape they do it well after breaking down the film.  But whenever a RB screen play is called, it seems either a WR misses a block, or a defender is not accounted for, and either the RB is tackled for a loss, or the pass go incomplete.

Mack did have 1 very bad tip off his hands this past year, that went for 6 the other way.  But when out in the flat, Mack catches and runs quite well. Aka the sideline 29 yard walk-in TD.

It just seems to me it is specifically the screen plays themselves Indy has issue with.

Does Luck have issues throwing 'catch-able' balls when thrown horizontally? Either ball speed, touch, or leading the back?

Does our RB coach, a former FB,  focus too much on being a tough runner between the tackles and pass pro, and not enough time working on these type of plays?

Does the team as a whole just telegraph these plays to the defense with body language?

    What are your opinions?

  16. I'm going to get a lot of blow back for this, but Leonard is still learning.  I love Darius, but playing at 218 and trying to tackle high all the time leads to him getting bowled over.  He doesn't lose the tackle per-say, but he does get taken for a ride an extra 2-4 yards when he does.  Playing at that weight allows him to move faster he says, but he weighed in at 225-230 at pro day.  That to me is  a minimum at his position.  He does have good play recognition, and uses his hands well to shed blocks, but when you are consistently out-weighed by the person you're trying to tackle, and you tackle high, you get taken for a ride quite often.

Freeney also had his woes early in his career.  When ever a team wanted to run the ball, they learned to delay hand-off, and wait for Freeney to use his speed or spin to take himself out of position and run in his vacant area.  He improved in that area as his career progressed, but it was still a flaw that other teams took advantage of.

That being said, Leonard had the more impressive rookie season when comparing when each player did for their respected positions.  Freeney's job was to get to the QB, which he did fantastically.  But he was a liability in the run game that year. Leonard did more than he was supposed to be able to do for his position.  You don't ask ANY linebacker to cover Hopkins and other receivers 1-1, Yet he did it, and quite successfully.  Also, it is not normally the WIL's position that get's called to blitz often, yet Leonard did it really well.  As a matter of fact, he was a top 5 linebacker in the NFL, in pressure %.

What I don’t like is tbe media saying the colts are going to win this. I think they are a little to high on the colts defense. I think this game will show that the defense is not quite ready.  The chiefs are already talking about being disrespected because of past playoff history. Their defense is being called garbage. They are going to come out wanting to prove everyone wrong.

And trying to prove means many times over doing it and making mistakes.  I think if things go right, and Indy stays calm and methodical, they win in a blow-out. Shocking not just the rest of the world,..but Colts fans as well.

  18. This is counting Hooker playing and it being cold and snowy.

Colts give the chiefs first touch of the ball.

Colts lean on short passes to WR's and TE's, mixed with runs.  Eat clock and end up ahead by halftime 18-10.

Second half Colts get the ball, and T.Y. burn them deep for a 40+ receiving TD because Chiefs are worn down and not expecting it.  Putting Chiefs down 25-10.  Mahomes then tries to make ill-advised big plays in bad weather and coughs the ball up a couple times, while Indy just put's the gas down to the floor afraid Mahomes has the ability to make massive comebacks. This Makes Mahomes even more hysterical (like the Rams game) and throws deep into double coverage to try to make things happen.

Actually his yac average was highest since Brown in 13.  Again, I’m not putting him down, but he’s not a power back. He’s a speed guy so when he does get by the contact he usually picks up a bunch.  Which inflates the yac.

But is he a guy you can count on to get the tough fourth and one, or a guy to punish the D when they get tired?  I’m not too sure.

All that said, best scenario is for him to light up the Chiefs tomorrow and for you to come back and say “Told Ya!”.

And I'm not by any means saying you are wrong that we need a fullback type RB.  Hewitt does alright, but he's not a RB.  I'd love for us to get a Rosy Pott's type RB that can lead block if needed, but also take the ball on 4th and 2 at the goal line, lower his shoulder and push the o-lineman in front of him over into the end zone.

I don’t think he was the same when he came back.  Maybe it was the PEDs that gave him the edge.

No one picked him up, right?

not sure. Haven't looked.  But I just saw Mack has more yards after contact than any RB in Indy since James. 3.04 yards after contact average.
