Nice post….   Seems a little like Shaq.   Maybe a lot like Shaq.    So here’s the thing….  As of now, Cooper seems like a guy who might go as early as 20 or as late as perhaps 40.   Maybe 25-45?

With the Colts currently picking 15 and 46,  Ballard can either trade down or trade up if CB wants him.   He’s going to have to wheel and deal if he wants his next Shaq.

    Just thinking out loud….

Honestly, it wouldn't shock me to see Edgerrin Cooper drafted on Day 1.  He is one of those players that has the "it factor" enough for a team to draft on Day 1.  Each year we see it happen and so-called professionals nowhere close to all those mock drafts.

On both ESPN and NFL.com it’s being called the worst RB class since 2013.

No first round talent.  Gio Bernard went 37th overall that year.   That draft produced some decent Day 2 RB’s, good but not great.   And that may happen this year.

A handful of RB’s in R2, and another handful of RB’s in R3.   The rest obviously will go on Day 3.

There’s a free read article on NFL.com from Maurice Jones-Drew as he ranks and evaluates the class.   A fun and interesting read.  Check it out.

Kind of my own assessment as well with this year's RB Class.  What one lacks another has and so on. Not one complete back and maybe one worthy of being drafted on Day 2, none on Day 1.

    Dejean from Iowa

Doubt any team that would draft Cooper in the first round would want to use him as a return specialist.  Rather have a backup player assume that role.

see DB Dee Williams (Tennessee) - probably go UDFA

After 12 games he was ranked 5th.  Had 18 PR for 264 yards with a 14.7 average.

Next year for return specialist keep tabs on:

    WR Brashard Smith, Miami, FL.

    WR Drae McCray, Texas Tech

    WR-F Jacob De Jesus, UNLV

Couple updates to the list based on some feedback. Bolded are new entries

    CB:

    1. Quinyon Mitchell, Toledo

    2. Cam Hart, Notre Dame

    3. Khyree Jackson, Oregon

    4. TJ Tampa, Iowa State

    5. Max Melton, Rutgers

    6. M.J. Devonshire, Pitt

My TOP DB fits for the Colts

    1. CB Quinyon Mitchell (Toledo)

    2. CB TJ Tampa (Iowa St)

    3. CB/FS Jaylin Simpson (Auburn) - Moved from CB to FS last year in college, but his speed should keep him at CB in the NFL imo

    4. FS Calen Bullocks (USC) - needs to be a better tackler.  Ran a 4.48s-forty

    5. FS Khyree Jackson (Oregon) - His 4.5s-forty was the 22nd fastest out of 29 CBs at the Combine.  See Jackson moving to FS much like Cooper DeJean who also ran a 4.5s-forty

    6. FS Renardo Green (Florida St) - 4.49s-forty see moving to FS

    7. FS Jarvis Brownlee Jr (Louisville) - 4.48s-forty see moving to FS

    8. CB Jarrian Jones (Florida St) - got speed and coverage skills but is an average in run-defense and a poor tackler

    9. CB Elijah Jones (BC) - got decent speed and coverage skills but needs to improve tackling and run-defense

As you can tell not many starter options opposite Brents besides Mitchell and Tampa while I see both Jones' as late depth.  After the Combine we know this year's receiver class is faster than the DBs.  Why can see a few change positions in the NFL and would struggle to match up as outside CBs.  Even Nick Cross ran a 4.34s-forty so yeah not excited about many of the DBs in the draft class.

@OhioColt Ryan Watts may project better at safety in the NFL, but even so he’s an elite athlete so he deserves a tape watch from me.

Really hoping we could address more of our defensive backs in free agency.  Looks more and more like we look to the draft.  If so, am hoping we do trade back in Round 1 with the Cardinals for an example.   Trade back R1 to P27 – Colts send R1P15 and R5P151 to ARI for R1P27, R3P66 and R3P90

R1P27 TE Ja’Tavion Sanders - hoping Sanders becomes our #1.  Did pass on Pork Chop.

R2P46 SS-NCB Javon Bullard - looking more like we are low on cap space and Blackmon is done in Indianapolis.  Bullard offers bonus of dual roles.  Nubin is another option but lately have Bullard high ranked and figured still available.

R3P66 FS Calen Bullock - like the idea of an earlier R3P here to go after one of the few remaining talented FS left in the draft class

R3P82 – Browns offered trade back to R3P85 and send R5P156 plus WR Austin Watkins

R3P85 via CLE SWR Malik Washington - Josh Down was a dream pick in R3 last year and Washington would be another great WR3-4 option

R3P90 CB/SAF Renardo Green (Florida St) - Liking Green a lot lately and has the ability to start opposite Brents Day 1 I feel.  Not sure about moving to SAF.

R4P117 OT Mason McCormick (SD ST)

R5P156 via Browns WR Ryan Flournoy - After the Combine I've moved Flournoy up from his R7-UDFA initial projection

    R6P191 Edge Javontae Jean-Baptiste

    R7P234 OLB Richard Jibunor (Troy)

As for Ryan Watts will leave him as a UDFA but do like Jean-Baptiste and Jibunor much better.

  6. After signing our own free agents, it doesn't look like we will have that much cap space to splurge on a big-time player.  Possibly some lower tier players on cheaper deal.  Not sure how much more can spread ~7M in cap space.  Was hoping we extended Buckner a free up cap space.  Been mention of releasing MAC from the fanbase but doesn't appear to be what the Colts plan to do.

  7. Pass but wouldn't mind adding either:

Edge Anfernee Jennings (Patriots) – known as a stout run-defender and ranked third among edge defender in run stops last year

Edge Emmanuel Ogbah (Dolphins) – better in a 4-3 and 3-4 base defense as evident from his past two seasons after Miami changed defensive schemes.

There's no part of me who wants to spend a draft pick on a running back unless maybe it’s a 7.   There’s plenty of decent RB’s available in free agency.   Thats where you can acquire a decent backup running back.

Moss is officially gone.  Waiting period of FA or draft for our next RB2

  9. Colts trade R1P15 back with Rams R1P19 and get LAR R3P83 – Rams have 12 draft picks

Colts then trade back again with GB R1P25 and get R3P88 and R6P216c who have 11 draft picks

Colts trade R3P88 via GB with SF for R3P98c and get R4P132

Colts trade up with MIA send R6P216c via GB and R7P232 to MIA for R6P200

R1P25 via LAR-GB OL Jackson Powers-Johnson – 2025 replaces Ryan Kelly and should win RG starting job in 2024

R2P46 WLB Edgerrin Cooper – E.J. Speed is a 2025 FA - hope Cooper is the new "Maniac" version of Leonard

R3P82 RB Isaac Guerendo – replaces Zack Moss, solid tackle breaker with great hands – bonus ST

R3P83 via LAR SWR Malik Washington – Josh Down clone and should be a solid backup

R3P94 via SF CB Khyree Jackson – solid zone cover CB

R4P118 TE Ben Sinnott – MAC replacement

R4P132 via SF OL Mason McCormick – solid LG who may earn 2025 RG spot when JPJ moves to center

R5P150 QB Jordan Travis (Florida St) – future QB2/3 with mobility like AR - Sam Ehlinger replacement

R6P193 OC Tanor Bortolini – replaces Danny Pinter

R6P200 WR-X Ryan Flournoy – outstanding combine should be a solid backup to MPJ

As for Moss, he’s a back a like a lot.  Have since we acquired him in the Hines trade.

But even assuming the Colts want Moss back, there is this.  At the end of his season, Moss’s agent said his client should get what David Singleton of Detroit got in FA a year ago.  3/18.

I don’t think Ballard would pay anything close to that.   Maybe 2/10.   Maybe.  So it may not be enough to bring Moss back.  Just saying….

We know the Colts love to run the ball and have a solid OL that we can actually do that with JT.  NFL is an RB by committee and the Colts will need assurance if anything happens to JT.  Moss was that guy, and the league has clearly devalued RBs.  Look at the Titans they drafted Spears in Round 3 to compliment Henry and appears to be the new RB1 in Tennessee.  I would like to see something very similar for the Colts with either Guerendo or Laube.  A back capable of RB1-2 status knowing that we can continue our ground and pound game with a high level of confidence.

Bortolini's agility drill scores are insane! They are some of the best in the history of the combine. And the shuttle one has proven to be a good predictor for success in the past. I'd be good with taking him as our long-term project to replace Kelly.

I wrote in another thread. IMO even though at first glance Dallas Turner doesn't seem like a Ballard DE, if you look deeper into his length, speed and explosiveness scores... IMO he's one of the best fitting DEs you can find for the LEO position in Gus' scheme.

Fiske fits athleticism-wise... but his length is kind of... low... like really low for his size.

Only thing about Bortolini is his short arms (20% tile) and span (42% tile) but the rest of his timed measurements were ALL excellent for sure.  Figured like Kelly we would at a minimum prefer an OL with 33" arms.  Although Pinter measured 31 7/8" arms.  Bortolini.  With Pinter being a free agent now could see the potential to add Bortolini instead in Round 5-6.

Dallas Turner is a SLB something the Colts don't really use much of is the only reason I don't have Turner on my draft board.  Too high of a premium draft pick for a position devalued by the Colts.

Not sold on Fiske either.  Don't see his athleticism translating to the NFL or to the Colts system.  Simply not a fan or buying into the hype.

More of a conspiracy than a hot take but Marvin Harrison Jr. is purposely avoiding testing and trying to drop down in the draft so that the Colts can trade up to him and he can go to his dads team

I also wondered if this was a possibility.  With NIL deals we know these young athletes are getting paid and surely would make up what they would lose being draft later.  If your MPJ know the fanbase has been wanting MHJ which might be the reason MPJ hasn't signed a long-term deal.

  13. Moss done well with the Colts for sure but can see him test the market and not come back.

The Bills released Hines and wouldn't mind adding him back wearing multiple hats as an option SWR/RB/return specialist.   Hines as we know can catch and to me would be an excellent backup option behind Downs.

Obviously, a draft risk if we do let Moss go, in Round 3, I would consider drafting either RB Isaac Guerendo (Louisville) or Dylan Laube (New Hampshire).  Like Hines, both have great hands and can function as return specialist while serving as RB2-3.

I trust in Ballard whatever he does. I'm just saying sitting at 15 I don't think Bowers falls that far. Maybe Thomas, he is not a bad option IMO

I also like the idea of favoring nothing but the offense side of the ball. I believe it was Superman had made a post stating the same thing. Anything to make it easier for the new QB (Richardson)

Brown’s David Njoku is another trade option for the Colts, which the Browns might strongly consider especially looking ahead to 2026 and 24M cap hit if he remains a Brown.  However, if the Browns trade away Njoku the Browns are off the hook in 2026.  Njoku definitely be an upgrade over what we have now in-house and still fairly young but mostly experienced compared to the rooks.

  15. The Colts miss out on drafting Brock Bowers.

Colts make a trade with the Browns for David Njoku sending our R3P82 to Cleveland for Njoku and their R6P208.  Njoku will cost the Browns 24M as a cap hit if he is still on the roster in 2026 but that would be erased if traded or cut prior.

Colts trade back in R2 with the Bills for their R2P plus R3P99 and R6P198.

You are correct about Wilson. It’s the 30 inch arms which are super short for a LB in general, but even more so for a Ballard LB.

This is not really a good safety class. Like at all. I truly think safety needs to be addressed in FA. I like the guys you mentioned with McKinney and Whitehead. I’d also look at Jeremy Chinn from Carolina. I listed Oladapo because he’s a Ballard fit (team captain, Senior, good RAD), but you’d draft him day 3 to be a SS/LB hybrid, which is needed in todays game. Think Deone Buccannon.

Wilson was atop my draft board but after seeing his arm measurements have removed him which is a shame because the rest of his measurements are solid.

Do agree the Colts need a SS/LB hybrid.  Not sure anybody in this draft class has that ability that matches the Colts at this time.  Haven't been able to find one and Chinn, know he is a local and Colt fan probably growing up, but am still on the fence with him as an overall player.  Really am waiting on next year's drat class and want to target Sebastian Castro (Iowa).  Castro would be ideal in the hybrid LB/SAF role which is what Iowa uses a 4-2-5 base defense in the Cash spot.

Watching Edgerrin Cooper, I don’t know if there is a more Ballard-y type player in the draft. Long, athletic, great closing speed, I just get the feeling if Cooper is there at 46, he’ll be at the top of the remaining players on Ballard’s big board.

Going to run with it but yes like to see the Colts add another Edgerrin in R2.  E.J. Speed will be a free agent next season.  Not to mentioned Speed turns 30.  Cooper is one of my top 3 picks at P46 and helps fill a future void heading into 2025 offseason.

  18. 7 minutes ago, EasyE said:

Rumors are Colts want Bowers also. They are not going to get him at 15th. Ballard is not going to trade up ever. It's not his thing, he likes trading back for more picks.

Nabers at 4 seems more realistic.  We tagged Pittman and no guarantee he will resign next year.  Question remaining cap space for 2025 depending on how aggressive we are this offseason plus got Paye/Dayo to figure out going forward.

Assuming if we did move up to 4 we expect to make the playoffs and give up next years RD1.  Would Bowers or Nabers be that difference maker?  Guess can take Bowers and hope to draft Pearsall in RD2 which I do like.  Already dreaming of draft day and still the anticipation of free agency coming first.

2025 top draft class in R1 has got some players do want badly so not sure like to give up.  Edge Jack Sawyer or Ohio State teammate JT Tuimoloau would be tempting but really want Florida’s Princely Umanmielen.  Starting to see a Florida pattern emerge.  Linebacker Harold Perkins (LSU) fill a void along with Cincinnati’s NT Dontay Corleon.

  19. @Defjamz26 you copying my draft board? Great minds and looks good.

Check out CB Ryan Watts (Texas) - impressive measurables that the Colts like 34 1/2” arms, 82 1/8” wingspan, 40.5” vertical, broad 125, 3-cone 6.82.  Solid tackler needs to improve coverage skills.

As a late option has that up and down game to game potential.  Got to love his measurements and am wondering if has a future in nickel as future option for Kenny.

    1 hour ago, Solid84 said:

I’m guessing Payton Wilson isn’t on the list because of his T-rex arms?

Truely is my biggest knock on Wilson and does seem to go against the mold of a Colt.

Cedric Gray is completely off my board, guy can’t open-field tackle.

Safeties am looking at free agency not the draft but do like Jaylin Simspon depth behind Xavier McKinney and pairing Cross with other the New Yorker Jordan Whitehead.  Coach Partridge was brought in might as well try to being in some of the players who played at Pittsburgh during same time period.  Dane Jackson as LCB is another cross-over with Partridge.  With Simpson has the chance to learn from one of the better FS in the league and hopefully take over on the backend of the contract.

    6) WR-X Ryan Flournoy (SE Missouri St)

I know JPJ isn't most people's choice, but recent sports articles are saying some teams have JPJ as a top-15 player in this class.  Do wonder if that included the Colts?

The 2024 offensive line class is arguably the strongest of this decade.  We could see a record number of offensive lineman drafted in Round 1 and a break the record of 50+ players drafted beating the mark of 49 in 2022.  JPJ can play RG this year and move to center the following season, which is same sentiment have been reading applying to other teams.

    Ideal Free Agent Targets are:

    • QB Tyler Huntley (Ravens)
    • WR-Z Quez Watkins (Eagles) Watkins had his best season under Shane Steichen
    • LCB Dane Jackson (Bills) - ties new DL coach Charlie Partridge at Pittsburgh
    • SS Jordan Whitehead (NY Jets) - ties to new DL coach Charlie Partridge at Pittsburgh
    • FS Xavier McKinney (NY Giants)
    • RDT Tim Settle (Bills)
    • LDT Maurice Hurst (Browns)

No added linebackers might not be a problem with the projected UDFAs

    • LB Dallas Gant (Toledo) – excellent span 79 7/8”, great 4.58s-forty, good arm length 33 3/8” and hands 10 1/8

    • LB JJ Weaver (Kentucky)

    • LB Richard Jibunor (Troy)

    • LB Cody Simon (Ohio St)
