  1. Hey whatever helps you deal with the Pats winning the Super Bowl again is your business

The Lombardi trophy will still shine the same and their SB rings will be blingy and sparkily just the same.

Maybe the Seahawks should have made the play they needed to make to win the SB, but they didn't and the Patriots did, that's why they're the Champs

Quote from Patrick Swayze in the movie "Road House" ... "Opinions vary!"

  2. And you said it right there. It wasn't against the rules. Now it is, but in no way does that mean the Patriots cheated.

That's the only real thing that I have trouble accepting about the perception of the team...a lot of the instances that people reference as 'proof' of why they are despicable were, in fact, not against the rules. Yes, they videotapes coaches signals 8 years ago instead of writing them down like everyone else, and there is no defense for that. I get it, and I understand peoples reactions to that situation. But everything else?

Saying things like 'the Patriots have a history of cheating' is kind of a little unfair. Spygate happened. Fine. That's an isolated incident that embarassed the team, the front office, and the fans, and unfortunately we have that mark against us. But illegal contact? The snowplow game? Formations that are now illegal but not at the time they used them? Not cheating. So is this 'history of cheating' really just about Spygate still? Because if that's the case then fine, nobody's mind is going to change on that...but one incident should not be used to condemn every single thing people hate about the team going forward. Do they deserve the benefit of the doubt in the minds of most fans? Probably not, but getting one speeding ticket almost a decade ago does not automatically make you a reckless driver forever.

Goodness gracious! " One speeding ticket almost a decade ago does not automatically make you a reckless driver forever."

Most true. However, "many" speeding tickets DO! 2001, 2003, 2004 Super Bowls? SpyGate went on for "how' long?

  3. I didn't write it. And I have dozens more just like it from writers outside of Boston... but whatever you want to believe. Bill and Brady's legacy are secure as the greatest of their generation ... and they still have time to add to it.

2001, 2003, 2004, 2014 New England Patriots Super Bowl victories will "always" have an asterisk behind them! SpyGate and DeflateGate "WILL" be remembered by all NFL fans! :) And that, my NFL friend, is the unmitigated truth. Call 'em like you see 'em comes to mind.

  4. It is an agreed topic that we are short a starting safety at this point.  Who is a safety we could trade for and whom do we have available to trade?  We have nine draft picks of which one could be put in with a deal.  The challenge is finding the safety that we want on a team that has a position need and we have a player or players we are willing to give up to fill our need.  Looking at safety stats for last year Aaron Williams of Buffalo would be a consideration. He is only 24 (their oldest at the position) but what do they need that we have.  I would have no problem assisting the Bills in their quest to dethrone the Pats.  Any other ideas or thoughts?

"I would have no problem assisting the Bills in their quest to dethrone the Pats."

Amen to that, brother! :) However, as long as "the Emperor" (as I like to call him from Star Wars movies) resides in Massachusetts it will be a tough time for the AFC. The dark side "hoodie" is an incredible coaching genius. Wish it were different. The man knows how to win in the NFL. Must give credit where credit is due. It sure would be nice if he decided to retire. Never gonna happen as long as he has breath in his lungs, IMO! :)

  5. As my friend who is a Giants fan said to me recently, "I would kill to have a team good enough that everyone just assumes they're cheating." lol.

glad the Pats got to take advantage of it and expose it to the league..  They'll get their shiny new SB rings soon and life will move on.. They weren't exactly planning their entire offense around this bizarre formation so it won't affect them at all going forward, they'll invent another wrinkle next year that will have teams up in arms haha

They should have the letters "RW:PC" engraved on the rings.

  6. The term "none are so blind as to those who will not see". If you don't get it. Substitute, "will not" to "refuse to". Ignoring posts no matter what the subject, poster, or points of view is exactly how wars get started. And I'm not talking about web-site football forums only. Read about the "Cuban Missile Crisis" if you "REALLY" want to understand about non-communication issues. Knowledge is power. Nothing else. So, IMHO, quit bickering and get informed instead of choosing to not "read all about it". (an old newspaper sales pitch)

  7. i dont get the people saying to pick an ILB with the 29th. your first round should be a positional need and someone who can come in and start day 1 not someone who will be 4th on the depth chart behind freeman, jackson & now irving

    for us its either:

1:  a big body in the DL to start along side jones and langford, or

2: an OL who can kick inside at G or outside at the RT

3: a RB who can split the workload with Gore, have gore in on every 3rd down to either block or catch out of the back field...depending on situations rotate on 1st and 2nd downs.

in that order. if there isnt any first round talents for either of those positions at 29 we take the best available player which if for some reason all first round talent is gone by 29 at those spots there is sure to be and LB/WR/CB that was projected higher but has dropped because of all the DL/OL/RB taken.

"2: an OL who can kick inside at G or outside at the RT"

This is the mentality that some NFL fans have on the opposite side as it relates to the defensive line as well. OLBs and ILBs who display the capacity to play both positions (I'm a huge fan of this philosophy) can create absolute headaches to opposing teams from a strategic standpoint. Speed, tackling ability, pass rushing, and just flat-out "versatility" is in many ways invaluable. The ability to evaluate situations and pace of the game nowadays can be game changers. I like your assessment of the OL, "Kezzarino". This does not mean that DLs who display such containment should be overlooked, too. The combination of all of those qualities establish very dangerous teams in the NFL. The Indianapolis Colts are now one of those "dangerous" teams even before the draft. CREATE HAVOC, IMO. It will most assuredly leave opposing teams in the dust so to speak who have not pointed to this strategy.

  8. Superman explains the rule change very succinctly. The change would not only give each team a possession, it promotes the regulation game in a much better way ending in a tie to OT. This proposal puts BOTH offenses and defenses on the field as in regulation. To me, that's the crux of the change. Whether or not "who" wins is irrelevant. It's the way that gets decided which warrants the change as the game is played in regulation and ends up mirroring OT.

  9. Superman quotes : "The strategy isn't a problem, IMO. Staying with it makes sense. It's the execution of the strategy that needs to get better."

Exactly. Funny that you mentioned this, Superman! This exactly is the mindset of one Jim Irsay talking about this very thing a couple of days ago. Creating the substitutions on a much faster pace and implementing the "strategy" was a big issue in speaking with the entire coaching staff Irsay said. SCHEMES and faster pace is what the Colts need to perform on a vastly larger scale to be competitive in every single game they play from now on. Some of the winning and pronounced teams seem to be doing that very thing. New England has been associating with this logic for years now. It fits into a larger system of creating mismatches even though teams are equally matched on the field of play from a talent standpoint. I really feel that the Colts have learned this judging from the moves and talent projection thus far the last 2 seasons or so. Perfecting this takes time. Indianapolis will continue to flourish at this most important aspect of the "New Era" (as I like to call it) of NFL football, IMHO! :) GO COLTS!

  10. They voted down the overtime possession proposal. I hate that.

Yeah, Superman, me either. The proposal to change this rule in OT should be visited every single year until it is passed by the NFL IMO. To basically decide a game with the "probable winning" coin toss does not bode very well for a lot of fans. This does not have to be liken to the NCAA (a lot of fans may think so) rules. The proposal would just allow each offense a crack at winning the game with at least one possession whether that is an opening TD or not. Grrrrrrr! Change is something people do not adapt to very well. However, in this instance it should be invoked to provide a much better way of ending games, OT or not.

  11. With Grigson's track record I wouldn't rule anything out. We clearly need another starting safety. Rather that player comes through the draft or a trade or even late free agency doesn't matter. I am sure all three are options right now.

Got that right GoColts8818! With Grigs, every single option could be on his venue. So yeah, nothing is ruled out like you say. The need for safety is certainly no secret. Will be "extremely" interesting to see how this thing plays out with the multiple possibilities he has.

  12. Ryan Mallett had a cannon at Arkansas. From what I can recall, not a bad runner either. Dunno about his accuracy from an NFL standpoint. He hasn't played very much behind Brady if at all. Maybe some other Colts fans can help us out here. The Texans are betting better every year as we speak. Gotta keep an eye on them and the rest of the division (of course).

  13. Good point....the Werner selection probably factored to some degree in Hughes's departure as well.

But I'll stick to my guns that if a given RB prospect is a premier talent and a 3-down playmaker....which Bell is....I wouldn't rule that RB out of the first round, especially at the point where we usually select.

Scouting and identifying that kind of talent and fit is what GMs get paid for.

Anyway...I don't make a habit of playing this 20/20 hindsight game, and again, all GMs whiff sooner or later.

But damn, could you imagine Bell...plus Hughes....plus perhaps one of the 2014 1st round safeties?

    And no Richardson fiasco? smh[/quote

Y I K E S ! Might of played Seattle instead of the Massachusetts serial killers and WON to boot!

  14. #7. "It's our Achilles heel right now." Kevin, couldn't agree more with Chuck's analysis on run defense. Not only is it Coach Pagano's opinion. In all likelihood, everyone associated with the organization (including the fans) from top to bottom and that includes the rest of the NFL. Draft well. Evaluate well. Strategize well. Then go out and put Nike's slogan on the field of play ... JUST DO IT !

  15. Signing these 6 FAs (no longer :) does nothing but improve the team in all sorts of ways. These guys weren't brought in to play "tiddly-winks" on the field, sidelines, locker-room, practice, meetings, and anything else you can think of just for the sole purpose of having big named players. They WILL contribute towards the march of an end goal of "HOISTING".

  16. Yeah, I disagree. I feel pretty confident that if Werner were a monster pass rusher, we wouldn't have paid Trent Cole what we did. And I feel similarly about Richardson/Gore. It's not always that matter of fact, but the relationship between those moves is hard to ignore.

And the slippage on the lines in 2013 and 2014 wasn't supposed to be there. We were supposed to be significantly better on the lines in both years. Two free agents in 2013 on the OL who were supposed to solidify their positions. RJF was supposed to be a starter and play well. Those three guys had a ton of missed games due to injury, and one of them isn't here anymore. Art Jones missed a ton of games in 2014.

Again, I'm not trying to be critical of Grigson. In some respects, the line play did get better on both sides of the ball, although not to the degree we needed. I'm just saying that I disagree that there was supposed to be slippage in either season. I think the opposite is true.

Of course I agree that it all balances out, eventually. But that's more true of the draft as a whole, not specific to any one team. For every Bjoern Werner, there's a Geno Atkins, but that doesn't mean that they both wind up on the same roster. When you miss on a first rounder, it's not just that he's not what you hoped he would be; it's that Werner could have been Xavier Rhodes or Travis Frederick; Richardson could have been Marcus Smith or Jimmie Ward. And then the needs on today's roster would be different, maybe not as many, and not only is your roster better, but you have more young, foundational players on cheap contracts.

The strategy isn't a problem, IMO. Staying with it makes sense. It's the execution of the strategy that needs to be better. It was in 2014; the draft was good, just handicapped by a bad trade. I expect this year's draft to be good as well, with the added benefit of having a full complement of picks. And it's important for 2015 and beyond that this year's draft be strong.

Couldn't have said it any better myself, Superman! :) Nice post.
