  1. Sub "Grigson and Polian" with Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck, and you'd be correct. Neither GM (Polian towards the end of his tenure here and Grigson since he's been here) has done anything noteworthy to improve the trenches. Grigson definitely has put more effort into doing so than Polian did, but his efforts have been in vain. Just because you luck into 2 once in a generation Quarterbacks, back-to-back, doesn't make your short-comings as a GM above reproach

Gee, I never knew quarterbacks were the only position requiring NFL GMs to make them look like geniuses. Thanks for clearing that up.

  2. There seems to be two lines of thinking here:

    1. We haven't fixed the D-line. The D-line was an issue last year and now we've lost Redding and RJF but have only added Langford. We haven't done enough to address our weakness in this area.

    2. Relax, we will address issues through the draft. Also, we are good with who we have (Arthur, Kerr, Chapman, Hughes, and Langford).

To address #1: I agree. The D-line still appears to be an issue even with the addition of Langford. We were an average D-line and it appears that we may still be just average. This is the issue some have here. They understand the importance of having a dominant D-line and with an opportunity to fully address this through FA, Grigson decided to address this with just 1 signing. This leaves the draft, which as we all know is a gamble. The best available players may not be D-lineman at our respective draft position.

"Hopefully we all feel better after the draft." I think we will. D-linemen are stacked this year going into the draft. Safety, linemen, and linebackers will be the order of the day for the Colts. Like your analogies. Indianapolis will get an "A" in this draft ... At the very least a solid "B or B+" IMHO.

To address #2: You are right. Thankfully we do have the draft to address this area and others. I am under the impression that D-line is an area of weakness along with safety, RB, O-line, MLB, and overall depth. Hopefully we all feel better after the draft.

  3. In terms of the positions he covets and the positions he's able to best evaluate at the pro level, Grigson is a Polian clone. The only difference between the two is, Polian was stubborn about building exclusively through the draft, whereas Grigson will look at every available avenue...sometimes even to a fault.

Neither GM really seems/seemed to care too much (or just aren't very good at identifying talent) at the interior positions on both sides of the ball. They get too distracted with the glamour positions, hence why we are consistently weak in the trenches

Oh, that's why the Colts had the NFL record for most wins in a decade. A Gazillion Playoff appearances. 2 Super Bowls 1-1. And not to mention multiple Championship games. Wow! ;) I'll take Grigson and Polian any day of the week and twice on Sunday!

I'm not knocking Grigson but it was a well known fact that Irsay had decided to cut ties with Manning and draft Luck before Grigson was hired. There was absolutely no talk of any QB evaluation when Grigson was hired.

Somebody compared this to 1998 and it's a little ironic I think as each GM were not huge factors. If you ask Irsay and Mora , I bet they might tell you that in spite of Polian taking credit for drafting Manning , he was the only one that may have wanted Leaf.

Sure, I see what you're saying. However, the knocks that GMs get all over the league sometimes are justifiable and sometimes they're not. The Manning/Leaf pick was out of the blue for just about everyone. The entire civilized sports world thought that Leaf would go #1 to the Colts. Didn't happen like you imply (and thank GOD for that). My point is that too many fans do not realize what the Colts' GMs have done for this organization over the last 18 years or so. Best record in the NFL for wins in an entire decade. Playoff appearances just about every single year. You know how hard that is to do? Off the charts. Sometimes I just feel like some fans are spoiled. If you look at the entire league, some cities would KILL to have just a couple post season games. That's all I'm saying. Nothing is perfect.

    Rave mode off. ;)

  5. My expectations are tempered. I expect him to be a complimentary type backup, rotational player who will probably be a starter on our line. He is solid but not a signing that will put our line over the top. We still need more help. Based on those videos of the Rams D line. 94 and 90 were the studs and 98 was there to help clean up some of the scraps. We have no Quins or Chris Jones on Indy's line.

Help is on the way, brother! Help is on the way! ;) Just as stated earlier in this thread, Langford "fits" into the Colts system a lot more than people know. He will prove to be a great addition to the line. Count on it.

  6. It's not hindsight. Very few people preferred RG3.

And having a quality QB available when you draft #1 is most of the battle.

"It's not hindsight. Very few people preferred RG3." Uh, read the sentence before ... I said "one more win and they might have created a dilemma." Emphasis on - "one more win"! (Hindsight) Not selecting RG3.

"having a quality QB available when you draft #1 is most of the battle." Really? I didn't know that.

  7. Not that I was a fan back in '98 but from my history homework the 2012 draft is eerie in its simularity:

Better athlete with more upside vs pro ready QB

Griffin somewhat arrogant towards the Colts in the pre-draft build up. Like Leaf supposedly was to ensure they didn't pick him

Early on Griffin was ranked over Luck (as was Leaf over Manning?)

The start of the fall for Griffin... Injuries, rumours of issues with teammates and the Washingtion beat media, admitally he hasn't matched "that interview" that Leaf gave.

Question is, which team will take a gamble on Griffin when he invariably parts ways with Washington? Dallas? :P

That is a GREAT question. Dunno. I guess it would be like rolling a pair of dice and hoping it comes up 7s.;)

  8. It usually means they were fortunate to land a quality QB. That's not a shot at Grigson, just NFL reality.

"fortunate to land a quality QB." Sure. Looks like the Colts picked the "correct" QB! They could've chose RG3. Didn't do it. And "that" is NFL reality. ;) I agree that they were fortunate to have the ability to choose, though. One more win and they might have created a dilemma. Hindsight is always 20/20.

  9. Just to say I echo your thoughts, I've not been particularly impressed with who we've sighed. Gore I love as a player (49ers are kinda my 2nd/NFC team) so I'm happy to have him but I also recognise he's an aged RB. As much as he defies the odds and the doomsaying every year it's going to catch up. Johnson, all depends how much he has in the tank. Cole I think we overpayed but we certainly needed pass rushing help. As usual though it does seem the financial structure of these deals is very cap management friendly.

Disappointed but at least we've not put any millstones around our neck, I'm willing to reserve a fuller judgement till after the draft. After all it's not like roster building is a series of mutually exclusive events, it's a continual process....

    Stick to the process :P

"I'm willing to reserve judgement till after the draft." Wise choice Grasshopper!;) Wise choice. It is a continual process like you said. I'm pretty darn sure that after the draft and before the season starts ColtsNation will be stoked like no other season before the franchise moved to Indianapolis.

  10. There are multiple factors that go into being paid.  If Luck takes a really low deal, it'll help the team, but he'd really be hurting all of his peers.  Let's say, for example, Luck takes a 5 year deal worth $50 mil with $25 mil guaranteed.  Now, every QB who comes after him will be hurt because of his decision.  GMs will tell guys like Cam Newton or Russell Wilson that they aren't as good as Luck, so they don't deserve to be paid that much.  So while Wilson could have been a $100 mil quarterback, he's now going to get less than that because Luck signed a team-friendly deal.

Furthermore, there's no reason why Luck won't want to get paid.  I use the term "deserves" loosely here because NFL contracts are ridiculous, in my opinion (story for another day), but Luck deserves to get paid big money.  He's carried the team to 3 playoff appearances and 33 regular season wins in 3 season.

Luck also has never said he must be the highest paid QB in the league.  So it's not like he has to be the highest paid guy.  But he deserves it.  He's the best young talent at the most important position in the game.  Russell Wilson has also never said he wants to be the highest paid guy.  That was the Seahawks front office saying they want to make him the highest paid QB.

The premise behind Luck taking a cheap deal is that it will make it easier to find free agents.  However, that's not Luck's responsibility.  Luck has done his best so far in Indy and deserves to be paid.  If that makes it more difficult for Grigson and co. to find free agents, then they'll just have to work harder in contract negotiations and do a better job of scouting rookies that fit the system.  Luck has no obligation to make Grigs' job easier to lure talent to Indy.

So while we all want them to take low deals to help the team, there are multiple reasons why it won't/shouldn't happen

Couldn't have said it better, myself! GREAT POST!

  11. I really wish people would quit calling for a NT via FA.  Weve spent plenty of money already.  Sure, I would've loved Knighton Hardy Wilfork etc. but it's not how it all went down.  We can get a good NT in the first round of the draft.  People tend to forget we still have opportunity to get very talented players.  Plus that player in the draft would be with us for multiple years for cheap.  If we sign a veteran it's going to put us in a cap bind after we resign Luck Hilton Fleener Allen and Castonzo.

Exactly correct! ;) Making sence is a lost art form. Making "common sence" is archaic!

  12. How does Jim Irsay come into this. Suh only wanted money not a ring thats it also the Dolphins are already in trouble after this year trying to pay him will have to a lot of restructing of contracts to keep him.

Jim Irsay does not like and never will "problematic" football players. Doesn't want to deal with them. Suh has one ... on the field unsportsman like conductivity. I don't blame him for feeling that way at all by the way. I wouldn't sign players like that, either, if I owned a professional sports team.

  13. The people in the Indianapolis fan base who discredit Ryan Grigson as a poor GM need to do a lot of professional football homework before receiving an "A" in NFL IQ. Do your research ... and you'll find that GMs that post over 10 wins and playoff appearances in their first several years isn't an accident. It's called, "doing a great job!" ... not to mention a Championship game as well.

  14. I'd be willing to sign for 1 year/19.8 million if they could afford it. I'm pretty versatile and typically play both DT/CB at the same time.

    8"6

    892 lbs

    Vertical jump: 22 1/3rd ft

    Bench press: reps infinite

    40 time: 2.13 sec

    Hahahahahahaaaaaaaaaa ... Hilarious!

  15. Although I agree with some of your point it's outside the jurisdiction of the logic police, more one for the Federal Bureau of Opinions.

"jurisdiction of the logic police" ... The Indianapolis Colts ... "Federal Bureau of Opinions" ... The NFL ... ... However, I like your analogy to a "point".

  16. Cap space and all of it's "scary" scenarios to some is just that. If the Colts want to target a player they'll get him. Regardless what the team does in order to make that happen. It's done all the time in the NFL. Now, "wildcat players" as I like to call them (Suh, et.al.) will

never entertain the Colts organization as long as Jim Irsay owns this team. Attitude, money, work-ethics, and "system" have to all fall into play before this organization makes a move. It's just that way. Sometimes you do get "busts". However, that's life in the NFL.

  17. Frank Gore is one of the most tireless backs I've ever seen run a football. That's coming from a Colts fan of over 50 years. That's quite a long stretch, Steve! ;) I've seen just about every back you listed run the rock. And I gotta tell you that his durability is off the charts. Keep on pounding that line, Frank! You deserve a shot at the pinnacle VL Trophy.
