It makes sense logistically to have the combine in Indy.

Exactly correct. Did some digging for the reason the Combine has been in Indy since 1987. The first year of the league wide Combine was in New Orleans. Then to Arizona, then Indianapolis. It has stayed in the city since because of it's central location in the U.S. But more importantly, it's the outstanding hospitality that the city provides to all teams from the owners down to water boys & the ever increasing media & fans.

Indianapolis knows Combines! You sure do, Indy! Forge on!

I am not sure what the Pats secret is compared to other teams regarding throwing these short passes and being highly successful with it. You can bump WR's inside of 5 yards. The Broncos need to rough Edleman up at the line of scrimmage by bumping him and just double Gronk. There are other teams like even us that have the same talent level and don't do it like they do. Edleman isn't better than TY Hilton for example.

That's a large sticking point. Rough these guys at the line without penalty. Denver does this, and they have an excellent chance of winning the game.

I Get that,  but just looking at the teams and not taking into account people's opinions, both are evenly matched.  I'm talking about how is not a big surprise if Denver wins,  like when Pittsburgh beat Indy in the playoffs.

I define an upset more about the chances of a team winning, and how they match up.  Redskins beating the Packers would have been an upset imo. Denver beating NE, not so much.

Yep. I'm with ya here, Narcosys. An upset in this game would be a lopsided win by either team. Really hope Denver's defense can get to Brady. 2.3/2.4 is extremely quick for Brady's release. If that defense of the Broncos can get Edelman/Amendola/Gronkowski at scrimmage and delay, it would benefit Denver immensely. If that happens, Brady could get sacked, hurried, and throw some ducks. In that case, the Broncos along with Peyton being on his game, should take it.

Hope that's the case. I do not want to see New England in their 9th Super Bowl.

  4. Take a look at last year's NFL Playoffs. I can't remember in recent history of more controversial calls than that. Each game had it's controversy. Amazing to watch. Being critical of referees has always been status quo from the teams that had calls go against them. But, last year's Playoffs will ring in my mind forever. Just couldn't understand the seemingly amount of them.

For the most part though, I think they try to get it right. And most times they do, especially with review. But there are quite a few times where everyone has been left scratching their heads as to what the heck they were doing.

The Oakland v. New England "tuck rule" was outrageous. THAT was a fumble in my mind for the rest of my life. :)

    But, I digress! haha

    From the linked article

The NFL believes that the current format is more than enough time to acclimate to jet lag. Whether you agree or disagree is another matter.

You know, all this talk about international expansion brings back memories for me. I remember when the old AFL was threatening the NFL market back in the 1960's with it's pass-happy league. Fans wanted to see that instead of the old run & pass once in a while NFL. It took hold. Many watched, including me. When the Jets beat the Colts in SB III, and the Chiefs beat the Vikings the following year in Super Bowl IV, it was ON.

Those two pivitol games were the launching pad to the merge in 1970. A lot of people were upset. Some were extremely upset. However, it catapulted this league into a Mega-hit for professional football. I think that's exactly what the expansion is doing, along with the revenue of course, to get the NFL on a much larger platform than it is today.

Whether that's a good thing or not, is in the eyes of the beholder. I, for one, would not mind at all to see if this venue works out. If not, the league can always go back to it's original format.

This is not change for the sake of change. I think too many people won't yield to the idea that change, no matter how it's presented is not good. I disagree. Let's give it a chance, at least, before we go making hasty decisions at the mercy of only change itself.

I agree with all of the above, but let's not forget about the new Strength and Conditioning coach, Darren Krein. Keep these guys healthy and on the field, not to mention making them faster and stronger.

Ditto, IndyD4U! The Colts have not enjoyed a very good to great defense in a long while. Monachino & Krein now have the luxury of trying to do that very thing. It is my most sincerest wish that this organization finally establishes that.

The foundation of NFL Championships lies in it's defense.

You know what CR? You're exactly right. Why is it assumed the NE will be playing in Santa Clara, CA in February? I with ya bro. A Denver vs AZ SB would be amazing to see & a distinct possibility. Sign me up.

2 favorite native sons who worked in INDY might test allegiances though & literally break the internet though. What the hades. I'm game. Let's go for it & make it happen CR.

Ditto, my man! :) I've always enjoyed reading your input into anything. That goes for Jay Kirk as well. You guys are good men. It's nice to converse NFL football especially on this forum about our favorite team, the Colts.

Hope all the Karma that's floating around concerning these two games directs it's arrow into a LOSS for the Patriots & Panthers. We certainly will need every ounce.

Well said Jay. That's what it boils down to isn't it? If the Colts can't compete for a SB this year, then Bruce is the next best thing to a hometown hero. I agree 100%

I agree with you, SW1! I'll be rooting for an Arizona v. Denver Super Bowl 50. I've been reading the comments in this thread and it's hard to disagree with anyone. This game earns the "Fickled Fate of the Year Award" as to how it will turn out. So many aspects of both defenses & offenses. I hope it'll be a classic with the Cardinals & Arians coming out on top.

    Forge on, my brother! :)

  9.

Not sure if anyone has heard this, as I just was reminded. This will be the 1st time in NFL Playoff history that 2 Heisman Trophy winners will face each other. I found that quite interesting and frankly surprising.

Jules, you plucked the subtext out like an expert. I thought that little remark might go unnoticed for a bit longer than a minute.

Sorry for my rant above, but I miss many of my old friends here and every time I come here, find a subject I'm interested in, the thread has already devolved into mudslinging. Such a turn-off...really.

Ruk, I'm not "seasoned" enough of a member to comment on old friends. However, I'm sure as heck enough seasoned to comment on the last 15 months. I enjoy your posting & funny comments.

Just to let you know, there are members out here, new or older, that appreciate your presence on this forum. I understand about the "mudslinging" and how much of a turn-off it is to you & others.

However, don't let that stop you. Don't be a stranger, man! :)

  11. haha Funny you bring this up, Supes. I've mentioned my 11 year old granddaughter as an avid NFL fan here before like knowing the plays to come from Pep's offense. As to what is noted in this article & your comments, she was extremely upset at this very thing. She couldn't help but notice the Chiefs dire situation of clock management & was overly LOUD exclaiming, "What in the blazing he** are you doing, Reid? Do you understand that, GrandPaw?" I told her, "No sweetie, I don't!"

    :)

  12. ZBS opens up quite an array of offensive sets & plays, no matter if that's running or passing. It's very beneficial & serves as an advantage over most defensive sets. Keeps 'em guessing. And that's the name of the game.

Unless you're the New England Patriots videotaping the plays before hand. :)

  13. "Protecting #12 is Priority 1. I'd like an o-line to do what it wants when it wants."

Exactly & well stated. And, until this happens with utmost authority don't expect a huge running game or quite frankly a huge passing game as well. "Dominant" teams in the NFL, for the most part, enjoy good to very good OLs. I'd be thrilled with additions to go with Castonzo & Reitz.

If dominance is what Indianapolis wants from an OL, then that's what it's going to take.

  14.

Yes sir, OUM! Logic does dictate the Panthers winning & covering the spread. Carolina at home. Probable MVP of the league leading the charge for them in Cam Newton. A very good HC in RR.

Great game planning all year long v. each opponent. A very, very good defense with LK. The pendulum surely should swing Carolina's way by that reckoning.

But, the Cardinals passing game looks extremely dangerous with Carson Palmer/Fitz & Co. Also, a very good defense & pass rushers. Freeney et.al. Good running game to boot.

It's a tougher call than you would like to think. However, seeing the hurt that the Panthers dealt the Seahawks last week was enough for me to absolutely pick them with +3 to Arizona. Hope it's a close game, though. Wouldn't mind at all to see that. We'll see what Arians has up his sleeve.

    Carolina - 31

    Arizona - 21

We were built around Peyton, that was our number one mistake. Outside in instead of inside out. So, if Peyton did not put up 21 points or more, down we go. We could not get stops when we needed, or force turnovers as much as we needed. That is not a recipe for winning SBs.

Brady has won 11 of his 22 postseason games with the Patriots D giving up 17 points or less, with only one of them a loss (14-17 to Giants), let that sink in. 5 of those came during his first 2 SB wins. The one year Peyton and the Colts won a game scoring 15 points in the playoffs, we won the SB. There is a reason why for the longest time Ds won championships till they opened up things in favor of the offense. The 3 years when Peyton's Ds held opposing Os to 17 points or less in the playoffs (Chiefs, Ravens in 2006; Ravens, Jets in 2009; Chargers, Patriots in 2013), Peyton went to the SB all those 3 years. I am not making it up.

Bill Polian, from his Bills days, built the team outside in instead of inside out, which is what Irsay and Grigson are trying to change during this Luck era, which I badly hope they do.

Wholeheartedly agree here. Neglecting defense is a casualty of NFL warfare. I've said it a million times. If Peyton and the Colts had a Top 5 defense to go along with their prolific offenses from 1999-2010? Oh baby! We're not talking about New England. We're talking Indianapolis Colts & their "Dynasty"! Period.

  16. As an addendum to my previous post, I had thought the purpose of the thread was correlation of the titles given to all names & why. I, incorrectly assumed that & misquoted NCF. Sorry about that.

However, given that, & the points made about Pep & Clyde maybe as "eyes in the sky" does anyone think that might be iniated by the Colts, whether that's Chud or Philbin or anyone else? And, is that a good idea from an offensive point of view given all the coaching changes that have taken place?

I may be living in the past but I would take my 2006 team against any team in NFL history. 10-0 at home overall and we won at Baltimore vs Ray and beat Tommy and BB. We didn't go undefeated or break any records but had to win 4 Playoff games to win it all and ended up 16-4, 80% winnings. I think had Bob Sanders been healthy all season that team would've been a 14-2/15-1 SB winner. We had Peyton, Marvin, Reggie, Clark, Saturday, Glenn, Freeney, Mathis, Brackett, June, Sanders, and Vinny. We were loaded. The combo of Rhodes and Addai running the ball kept defenses honest too. Addai was young and strong and Rhodes was a decent Vet. It's ashame the year we win it Edge wasn't on our team.

I agree. Last year Tony Dungy was asked what Colts team was the most formidable out of all the Indy teams he had. He said, 2004. That was not surprising to me. All the one & dones made me sick, because we did have very, very powerful teams during the 2000s. A play here, a play there, made all the difference in the world.

No, no!      I'm NOT making that point about Philbin.    I have no idea if he'll be the eye in the sky.    If I said that, I need to have my head checked because I don't know.

My "eye in the sky" comment was referring to Pep in Cleveland and Clyde in Miami.     Only those two people.

My comment about Philbin was that to try NOT to read too much into his title of "assistant head coach"....  that I think it was done to justify giving him more money than an OL coach might ordinarily get.       That if Pagano couldn't be the HC for any game, it's my hunch that Chud would be the guy to take over and not Philbin.     I could be wrong on that.....    I'm guessing that based on the long standing friendship and relationship that Pags and Chud have....     that's all....

Okay. Okay. Gotcha. So, if the determining factor is to put someone in the box, who would you like to see there & why. To me, it would most likely be Chud or Philbin no matter what the title. That was the point I was trying to establish, not subbing for Pags. Are we on the same page now?

Great memories my brother. You are right nobody picked us to win that game and Peyton was even in his prime. That Ravens Defense was crazy great with Ray, Ed, Suggs, etc.. They even had Lewis at RB, a Great O.Line, and McNair at QB. Man that win was awesome!

And, it was in Baltimore to boot! :)

  20. 2 hours ago, 2006Coltsbestever said:

Jeez me too. I cant believe not 1 person is picking Denver. I figured out of 20 analyst at least a few would, man how stunning. Peyton has to be laughing about now.

This reminds me of the Colts v. Ravens several years back on our way to the 2006-07 SB. No one, and I mean no one picked Indianapolis to win. Our defense was rated last against the pass & not very good against the run. That was Adam Vinateiri & the defense who won that game & Bob Sanders igniting it throughout the way to the SB.

Thanks.....     always appreciate kind words....     especially when they come from someone who I've knocked heads with from time to time over the years....

    That means a lot....        :corner:

Nice to see some comaraderie. :) You made an excellent point about Philbin being the "eye in the sky" for the Colts. I suspect that is exactly what's going to happen and why they brought him in. It appears, as you outlined NCF, that many NFL teams are doing/will do this very thing. And yes, it makes quite a bit of sense to have an experienced coach overseeing the entire offense. To accumulate as much information as you can & relay that to incorporation mode is not only valuable, but a necessity.

    Great points & thoughts.
