Understanding what a Center does will help you understand why this is a terrible comment.

I coached football for several years so I know what a Center does. Regardless of which lineman you choose that linemen must know what to do in harmony with the other linemen in order for a play to work. What do you think a Center does for the Colts that will change once Kelly comes back that the are not doing now?

  2. When coaching the offensive line and/or putting in the blocking scheme for a run you have to have blocking Rules because the defense can shift and/or change its alignment. Lets say that you are running a simple Off Tackle Play to the right with the TE leading the play. The OT rule might be GOD (Gap, On, Down). This means he would first look to block the man on his inside Gap, If not one is there then block the man in front of him. If no one is in front or on the inside Gap then block the first man down from you. Lets say the TE's rule it to Kick Out the first man that could come across the line of scrimmage. The DT lines up in the Gap so the OT blocks down on him. The DE who was over the DT gets kicked out by the TE. If the DT is not in the OT's Gap but the DE is over him then the OT blocks down on the DE and the TE would end up kicking out the OLBer. These decisions must be made before the snap because if you hesitate on who to block you lose.  The Oline of the Colts is often confused.

Another situation is where we run to the right and pull both the OT and OG from the left side. In order for this to work the left side defenders have to be situated so that they cannot reach the RB from behind. I have observed upon reviewing the film where the other teams fastest DL or LB get on the left shoulder of our OT as if he is going to blitz or charge hard. Our OT pulls and the DL or LB comes through untouched and gets the back in the backfield. The OT should have a rule not to pull in that situation. We however do not make that adjustment.

    Just a few examples.

Pagano cant change the OC's play calls.......There's not time for that...not even close

They did what they had to do to win, if that's the only goal.

Team has been well coached the past two weeks minus 4 starters

The head coach can certainly control the play calling by telling the OC do not do XYZ and do XYZ when we get the ball. The coaching the last 2 weeks has been terrible. We never should have lost to AZ that was total coaching and they almost blew the Cleveland game.

  4. I have coached football for 15 years. Being an Offensive Coordinator has little to do with being an effective Offensive Line Coach. The bottom Line is that Philbin has very little experience at Offensive Line Coordination. (His Olines in Miami were bad by the way). If you watch our games one of our biggest problems is that our line constantly allows free defensive men to attack without any blocks. There simply is not much Coordination among our linemen in either run or pass blocking.

    Dear God.......

You want a BETTER O-line coach?    Seriously?     Better than Joe Philbin?

It's not likely to happen in your lifetime.

You have a good one on the team RIGHT NOW,  and it appears you don't even know it.

Joe Phibin is an awful line coach. Just watch the Colts offensive line and how many missed assignments that have. Have you looked at Philbin's resume. He was a Head Offensive Line coach for ONE year. The OLine is not well coached.

With all the negativity from the first game, I really felt they did a good job of 1) Giving us the best chance to win by starting JB 2) Getting the better performance out of the defense (Melvin and Mathias were stepping it up from last week) 3) throwing that challenge flag, 4) calling that time out to ice the kicker. Overall, the forum, in general seems much more at ease this week, and I believe it was largely so to the coaching.

The coaching was terrible and lead to losing a close game. They made the following glaring mistakes

Played 42 when he was getting beat over and over again.

On the long touchdown pass when AR was trying to get back in the game they had Hooker on the line of Scrimmage. If he is back in centerfield they do not make that pass

Did not play Mack enough and made poor play calls when he was in the game.

The challenge was once again not used correctly.

They called timeout with about 10 seconds to go in the game giving AR a free play. AR simply did not take advantage.

They had 12 men on the field after a timeout AND the player did not stay on side when running off the field.

Left AC alone to block his man when he was beat repeatedly.

These are just a few of the mental mistakes that should not have occurred and would have resulted in a win.

  7. The Offensive line is in shambles. One of these days we might actually address this problem. Hopefully Ballard will do so next year.  We have two pieces Kelley and AC who is a RIGHT TACKLE.  We need to get at least 2 lineman next year who can play. We need a LEFT TACKLE and a Guard and hope that someone from the present team can play the other guard position.  Mewhort's knee must still be bad because he has zero ability to hold the line.
