it comes down to matchups in the tournament. They should have a chip on their shoulder from last season. They are also more complete than last year. Braden Smith is a legit point guard. Guards generally take over in the tournament. Last year it was, shut edey down, and problem solved. I don’t think it’s that simple this year.

the thing I give Purdue credit for is that they are going to get everyone’s best effort. That’s life at the top of the food chain. But then again, they did last year

You are right.   They get the best of every opponent.  They just need to keep on winning, of course.  I predict they will make the Sweet 16 or Great 8 and lose at that point.  I fear that the selection committee will put a top 3 seed in their bracket (Kentucky).

I don’t see it dying off. Like you said the wnba game is not good. But Caitlin Clark is unbelievable. People will watch her. Her game isn’t going to slow down in the pro’s. You can’t guard 26 feet lethal shooting. She’s going to average 5 or more 3pointers a night at the next level. And her scoring is just one aspect of her game. Like haliburton, she sees it all and can make passes you just don’t see at the women’s game.

not to mention these young gals have it figured out. The media isn’t creating them, they are using alternative forms of media for the attention they get. The old media is just capitalizing. They have brought a passion to the game, creating rivalries and drama. I’ve never seen it before in this game. Really not even at the men’s level. There is not much passion there anymore like there used to be. It’s too easy to be a crybaby and transfer out.

We will have to agree to disagree here.  i think she could help a little uptick in viewership and then it will die down.   The WNBA has yet to show it can be a well attended league.  The Indiana Fever average 4000 fans a game.   That is similar to roller derby in Fort Wayne.   The Komets get over 7000 per game.  So the Fever (WNBA) is a little over half of minor league hockey.

Why? Did they not fulfill their agreement to being an athlete for the year they were there? It’s not a 4 year contract. It’s year to year. The schools can stop it at any time. And the player previously could transfer at any time. The difference is now transfers don’t have to sit out a year. Which was always the case for graduate students. There were too many inconsistencies.

I depends.   If they were a no show to class, they should either get a failing grade that should follow them on their transcript or have to reimburse.  Also depends on the scholarship.  Some are offered and accept multi-tear scholarships.

I respectfully disagree. Women's college has been poorly attended, for better or worse for some time. Never has a single player been a draw like she has. Iowa just lost in Bloomington a few days ago, and it was a complete sell-out, 17k, with Vic Oladipo sitting courtside. If she declares (still debatable if she will) and she is Indianapolis, people will pay to watch her play. Maybe not sell-outs, but major increase in attendance. Opposing teams are currently experiencing 150% increase in attendance when she is in town. tv ratings sky high. 1.5 million plus. When they lost to Ohio State in overtime, it peaked at just under 4 million. Last year's national championship game? Up 100 plus % to almost 10 million viewers.

I think you grossly underestimate the draw. She's the steph curry of women's basketball.

I think she is a huge draw now because of the media attention because she is breaking records.  Once in the WNBA, it will be forgotten.   She will help increase attendance and viewership a bit but it'll die off.   The WNBA game is just not good.   I can't watch the NBA either but I root for the Pacers.

they’ve beaten everybody in the conference at the top except Boston who is the clear #1. They will make the playoffs, which isn’t the case for the colts, and again they have the most dynamic point guard (who could have been the all star mvp.) The entire concept was ticket sales, and the colts record this year wasn’t part of the conversation. It was if they made a management change that led to three consecutive 4 win season…

And yes Caitlyn Clark will have the same draw in the wnba that she does currently, which is sold out arenas everywhere she goes and people paying nfl ticket prices to see her. It will be a first, considering no one goes to wnba games. She’s going to change the game as we know it.

I wasn’t aware of the blackout rule change. It doesn’t change my opinion on people not spending disposable income (grocery bills were just reported to be the highest percentage of disposable income in decades) to watch bad games.  If anything it strengthens that argument. Why spend the money when you can watch it at home/turn it off at halftime?

Do you really expect the Pacers to challenge for the NBA title?   I hope so, but think it is unlikely.   Like other small market NBA teams not in an ideal location, they can make the playoffs, get beat and have a poor draft spot.

I don't think Clark will make much of a change in the WNBA.   It'll still be a poorly attended league that most do not care much about.

I hope Purdue wins it all. I have always been an IU fan but it was different when Bob Knight was there. If IU stinks now days, I am OK with Purdue doing well. I don't trust Matt Painter though. He coaches like Coach K in the Regular Season then come Tournament time he turns into Frank Kush Homer Simpson Laughing GIF by FOX TV

With the loss last night, I wonder if IU can even make the tournament this season.  I don't know of anyone who thought that would be the case when the season started.  They could still win a couple in the Big ten tourney and play themselves in but I think the Big Ten may get as many as 8 teams in and that leaves IU on the outside.

also, soccer in America is growing by leaps and bounds in popularity. There would be no reason to alter anything to stunt that growth.

They have been saying that for 50 years and it is still not very popular.  I played as a kid and got a scholarship to play in college, coached both my daughters when they were little and still watch important games, but it is not a must watch thing for me (a soccer fan).

I don't know man. Having his shot blocked by a shorter guy, having a guard throw up a floater right in front of his face with no attempt to block it, not dominating the boards like he can, not recognizing when they are leaving him wide open because they know he won't even attempt a 10-15 foot jumper, too many things I don't like about him came up all in the Ohio State game that Purdue lost this weekend. I was unimpressed and unless he takes care of half those things I specified on a consistent basis, my opinion of his will stay low.

I have seen some big guys UConn trots out, he doesn't seem like he has that kind of twitch like an Okafor, heck even Madsen of Stanford and Hansborough of UNC had better reactions than him.

He has rarely been blocked by a shoter player.  Exceptions happen but he is still good for 20+ and 13+ a game.  I'll take that any day or season.

I'm not sure that NIL in and of itself is the issue, if a college player can make money by endorsing a product, fine.  I think that the bigger issue is the NIL collectives that are now getting involved in the recruiting of players and enticing them to transfer, especially now that the transfer rules are so liberal.  It is becoming pay for play and a player can transfer almost any time that they want, if they get a bigger NIL offer from one of the collectives.  The colleges may need to have contracts with the players that sign on to play for them, not unlike contracts professional teams have with their players.  I also think that if there are not changes to the college system there will come a time when very good coaches will either retire in their prime or leave for the NFL rather then deal with the morass that is college football.

I also think players should have to pay their original school back the scholarship they accepted and used.

Purdue - man that Edy guy looks like Luke Longley, a tall man with no knees, someone you would think would dominate but he is JUST tall when compared to other tall guys that have played in the NCAA. At least Longley could hit that 10 foot jumper away from the basket. Purdue is destined to lose in the first 2 rounds, IMO.

I like Edey.  It is great that he gave up the NBA draft to come back to Purdue.  He is shooting 50% from 3 point range for his career.  Ha ha.

I can see Purdue going out in the first 2 rounds but I can also see them making it to the final 4.  Matchups will tell the story.  Edet will get 20 points and 13 rebounds each game, so it'll be Smith who it falls to.
