  1. As much as I enjoy Bob Lamey, the one thing he does that makes me upset is, he's such a fan that he gets so excited that he blurts out what he thinks happened, what he hopes happened, before he actually has any confirmation. As if he forgets that people are listening to this and not seeing it. For example he proclaims things like "Colts got the fumble" and it turns out we don't. Or he'll scream "TOUCHDOWN" OR "FIRST DOWN" before actually receiving confirmation. So I'm sitting there at work like "YES" only to find out seconds later when Bob switches to his low voice "Ahhh dangit the Colts are short". That really irks me.

...or he'll tell you that a game-winning 60-yarder by Scobee is short and then a couple seconds later, "Oh, wait, no, it's good. Jaguars win." I enjoy listening to Lamey when I can't get a game on TV around here, but it's more of a nostalgia thing for me. I remember listening to Lamey's play-by-play as a kid whenever my parents wouldn't let me watch a game on TV. If I go back through my e-mail from the past five years, I'm sure I can find about a half dozen Lamey-said-this-but-this-is-what-actually-happened incidents that gave me a heart attack at the time. I love his passion, though.

  2. Yep! To this day I wonder why there wasn't a penalty called on that play. It was dirty as bleep and IMO they were purposely trying to take him out. I've despised the :spew: Redskins ever since.

It wasn't dirty; it was just awkward. Manning got hit low from behind just as another defender was closing in on him from the front. The defender coming in from the front positioned himself to hit Manning square in the chest, but just as he was getting there Manning dropped to his knees because of the hit from behind. Because Manning's entire body dropped just as the defender was getting there, the defender ended up hitting him in the head instead of the chest. On top of that, his legs got pinned under the defender that hit him from behind, and he got rolled back over the defender. He got twisted like a pretzel. It was an awkward hit that made my heart skip a beat because I thought I might have just seen the last play of Manning's career, but it wasn't dirty. It was more the result of coincidence. Both defenders individually made clean hits, but the combination was brutal.

  3. This scares me. If there is any doubt that Manning can start the season, then they need the guy that is going to be throwing passes in Game 1 on the roster NOW. If it is one of the QBs that are currently on the roster, then so be it. (I say that having not seen any preseason games.) If they think they might need a veteran backup to play in real games until Manning comes back, then they need to get that guy on the roster NOW. They need to be working him with the first team as much as possible in preseason. They can't just go out and sign a veteran QB the week before Game 1, throw him into the offense, and expect anything remotely good to happen. They need to get that QB on the roster as soon as possible so that they can start familiarizing him with the offense. Time is of the essence. It is the only way that the Colts would have even a remote chance of salvaging a win or two while Manning is out.

  4. Not exactly. 5 yards makes a whole lot of difference in terms of highest speed reached especially with a running start. It makes sense. If a player is willing to return it from 5 yards deep in the end zone and has the blocking set up to do it, he could break it or either be down at the 10. Maximizes the decision making of the returner.

Yes, it gives the return team more time to make a decision and set up blocking. I'm not disputing that. I'm not saying that it is not a benefit to the return team to not allow the coverage team a running start. What I AM disputing is the notion that the coverage guys won't be going as fast when they get to the returner because they didn't have a running start. It only takes 10 to 15 yards to accelerate to top speed from standstill. After those initial 10 to 15 yards, the coverage team isn't moving any faster with a running start than they were without one. Certainly by the time they get to the returner they're not running any faster. It just took longer to cover those initial 10 to 15 yards starting from standstill than it would have with a running start.

  5. Exactly. They felt it would reduce the speed of some players coming down full-speed who already had a running start. It is designed to increase actual blocking instead of simply throwing your body in front of a player going full-tilt.

I really don't buy that logic. By the time a guy gets 20 yards downfield, he's going full speed regardless of whether he had a running start or not. It will take him longer to get 20 yards downfield if he has to start from standstill instead of taking a running start, but he's not going any faster or slower at that point. It will take the coverage team longer to get to the returner and allow for a longer return if they can't take a running start, but the coverage team is still going to be going full tilt by the time they get to the returner.

  6. The counter to that is that all players on the KO team have to start on the 35 yard line, no running start. It does bring a new aspect to the game.

I didn't even know about this. I've heard a lot of talk about the spot of the kickoff being moved forward 5 yards, but I didn't know that the defenders on the kicking team could no longer take a running start. I'm surprised that hasn't been included in the conversation more. Yeah, pushing the kickoff 5 yard further downfield might discourage returns, but not allowing the defenders to have a running start could negate that and actually lead to more returns. It will be interesting to see how this plays out through the course of the season.

  7. First I have heard of this new horsecollar rule. You don't have to bring the guy down. All he has to do is buckle his knees?

You can bet if someone grabs my jersey the first thing I would do would be bend my knees with this rule.

    I don't like it.

Unless they completely changed the rule, grabbing the jersey is not a horsecollar and is completely legal. Grabbing the shoulder pads is a horsecollar and is not legal.

  8. But he was traded. End of story. Should have's don't determine Hall of Fame status.

I don't think he's trying to argue that he shouldn't be inducted as a Ram. I think what he's saying is that it burns to watch it because, in his opinion, he never should have been traded and should have played his entire career as a Colt. I think he's saying that it's painful to watch because it is a glaring reminder of what might have been.

  9. We also don't play any man-to-man, so someone who specializes in that department would likely find their talents wasted (as well as a lot of our salary cap space) on this team.

A good coach adjusts the scheme to best utilize the skills and physical abilities that are available. You can play a mix of man and zone; it doesn't have to be strictly zone or strictly man. If you have a good man-to-man cornerback, you can have that CB play man on a specific receiver and assign the rest of the defensive backs to zones. The salary cap ramifications are a good reason not to go out and get a good man-to-man CB, but wasting his talents in our system is not. If you could get a good man-to-man CB for the same price as one of our zone CBs (and I'm not saying you can do this), the only reason not to do it would be that you don't have coaches good enough to adjust the scheme to utilize his talents.

  10. While I'm sure the Colts coaching staff emphasizes the importance of a proper tackle and of wrapping up...

I'm not so sure that they do. The tackling technique is so consistent across the defense (especially the LBs and secondary) that it almost looks like they have been taught to tackle that way. I was hoping that would change with a new head coach and defensive coordinator, but it hasn't. If I was a defensive coach (and there is definitely a good reason that I am not), I would be drilling tackling technique into my defense every day in practice until I started seeing it on the field during games. Yeah, it may be fundamentals and they may not want to devote practice time to it, but for this defensive scheme to function even moderately well, sound tackling fundamentals are critical.

  11. Our LBs havent been the best at tackling once the runner gets to their level, esp if a big back, Here size may play a role

Yes, size plays a role, but technique also plays a role. Over the past six or seven years, our defenders have not practiced sound tackling technique, especially for small players. Their method of tackling seems to be to lower the shoulder and cannonball into the ball carrier hoping to knock him down with momentum. Not only does this lead to injuries for both defenders and ball carriers, but it is also not effective. Half the time the ball carrier gets knocked off balance and falls down or gets knocked out of bounds, but the other half of the time the defender just bounces off the ball carrier and alters his trajectory as he goes on for another 5 to 15 yards before the next defender cannonballs into him. I have pulled my hair out in frustration over this for years.

If I was trying to teach small defenders how to tackle, I would teach them to come in fast and hit with the upper body. When contact is made, wrap your arms around the ball carrier like a grappling hook and hang on for dear life. Try to bring him down with your momentum, but if you can't bring him down with initial contact, hold on tight and either go dead weight or dig in to try to stop him from going forward. Make him drag you forward so that you slow him down enough for your fast teammates to get there and gang tackle him. If you are not in the area to make initial contact, you should always be looking to assist with a gang tackle if the ball is in your area. The goal is not to make a highlight-reel tackle that makes people cringe when they watch it but to get the ball carrier on the ground with the minimum number of yards after contact. The Colts have one of the fastest defenses in the league from top to bottom. They should take better advantage of that.

    Celsius or Fahrenheit?

    Kelvin (but not Hayden).

  12. ( i bet alot of you colts fan didn't even know about this)

Yeah, because this wasn't a constant topic of conversation on the forum for about three months.

It is kind of nice to see a video that actually presents the facts instead of all of the hearsay and rumors that were being printed by the news outlets at the time. There were reports at the time that the police found Marvin's gun hidden in a bucket at his car wash. The actual police reports say that he turned over the gun voluntarily. What still doesn't make sense to me, though, is this sequence of events...

    1. Marvin and thug get into argument and Marvin throws him out of his bar. (Not disuputed by Marvin)

    2. A couple days later, Marvin and thug have confrontation outside Marvin's car wash. (Not disputed by Marvin)

    3. Moments after confrontation, somebody opens fire and unloads their guns into thug's truck.

    4. When questioned, Marvin turns two guns over to police.

    5. Forensic analysis shows that bullet casings taken from thug's truck match gun that Marvin turned over to police.

How is that not sufficient evidence? What better evidence do you expect to find? A high-definition video tape with slow-mo special effects of Marvin blowing holes in the guy's truck? That's pretty much as good as murder evidence gets. I've always doubted the validity of that sequence of events because if all of that stuff is true, I don't understand how Marvin Harrision is not in jail right now.

  13. Tried to quote her here but I haven't figured out how to do that or even if it is possible yet! :)

It's not very intuitive. At the end of each post, there is a button that says "Reply." If you click that button, it will quote the post in your reply. On most forums, that button would say "Quote" instead of "Reply." If you want to reply without quoting anybody, there are buttons at the very top and very bottom of the thread that say "Add Reply" or you can just reply with quote and then delete the quote.

I'm still trying to figure out how to post something. Duh can you tell I'm blonde. No guys no comments please.

Wait....did you just post to say that you can't figure out how to post.....<head explodes>

  14. a couple of things to note, there are two different photos to choose, a profile pic and an avatar. Some users have wondered why they uploaded a pic and it didn't show up as their avatar. You can set it to be the same pic, I think (we are still getting used to everything as well), but there are two separate photos.

  15. Dash, and I thought all these forum moves were designed to throw all those pesky Patriots off the scent.....just hope GoPats doesn't find us...

    Your evasive maneuvers are futile.

To everyone that played a part in making this forum a reality, thank you. It is actually behaving like a forum. Now we just need to have a season to have something to talk about. Oh.....wait......there's an "off topic" section. Now that's thinking ahead!!
