  1. Mario Harvey looks like Ray Lewis on the clip above. He also had an excellent pro day running under 4.5 at 250lbs. With all that Pittsburgh still cut him. With Harvey and the other LBs the Colts recently signed it should be an interesting training camp. Moala played RDE at USC and should adjust well to a 3-4 hybride. Matthews also played DE at Cincinnatti. Pagano talked about not fitting a square peg in a round hole but looks like the Polians drafted square pegs to play in round holes. Hughes looks like a LB drafted to play DE. Moala was a DE drafted to play DT. Matthews was a DE drafted to play DT. I believe Wheeler was an ILB at Georgia Tech and was drafted to play OLB with the Colts. If we debate the new defense knowing the information we know imangine what coach Pagano knows.

Philip Wheeler played every linebacker position at Georgia Tech, I want to say WLB his sophomore year, SLB his junior year, and MLB his senior year. I'm not completely sure though but I think he did play all of them.

  2. I was unaware that was how the injury was. I thought the surgeries didn't alleviate the pressure on his nerve, which cause discomfort and weakness in his arm. I thought once the fusion was done it alleviated that discomfort and now he can throw without pain and building up his arm is just a by product of the weakness from the nerve before and him not using it for basically almost a year of non-throwing. I guess I saw this as an arm strength thing with the muscles which obviously had atrophied because of not being used and the weakness that had occured because of the nerve discomfort. I assumed once the pressure was off the nerve that he was simply working at arm strength..not repairing the nerve. That changes a lot of things for me.

It depends on how you think of it. From what I've heard, the nerve is expected to regenerate. I find it hard to believe that getting a hurt neck will somehow cause a person to have a weak tricep muscle for the rest of his life. That doesn't make much sense to me which makes me think that a lot of people are overstating his nerve regeneration rehabilitation process. I don't know what will happen, only the Lord knows. I hope he will recover fully though and quick, we need him back pronto!

  3. In response to the pick statement by Jason, it is my opinion that Irsay will have far more forgiveness by the fans and media for picking Luck and failing, then he ever would be passing on Luck and failing.

You don't do business by worrying about what other people think about you...

  4. Actually, the doctors have already declared his last surgery (the cervical fusion) healed.

However, PM is still rehabbing from his tricep nerve damage injury that necessitated all the surgeries.

He's rehabbing and trying to get back to normal, but you don't have to make it sound so bad.

  5. Alright! Another Philip Wheeler fan. I've liked him ever since Georgia Tech though hahah.

I wouldn't call his natural position OLB in a 3-4, but he could play well their. He can play well in a 4-3 at OLB, we just have to use him properly. Just look at what Von Miller did playing 4-3 OLB in Denver, he had 11.5 of sacks and played very well. I think that a quality defensive coach could get a whole lot more out of our players if he uses them correctly. Philip Wheeler should definitely blitz more, and I bet Pagano could help Jerry Hughes to become a better player. I still like Jerry Hughes.

I still want us to stay in a 4-3 base defense, but I'm not opposed to using a 1-gap 3-4 in specific situations. Whatever counters the opposing offense the best is what we should use.

  6. We would get a ton...I mean a ton of picks for the #1 pick. Remember not only are picks valuable to fill holes but way way way cheaper than free agents due to the new cba. If lets say by chance Cleveland gives us #4 pick #22 and next years first rounder and say a third or something....those picks could easily turn into players like Kalil (play LT/castanzo RT) or blackmon at 4 and would put us in the running for any number of players at 22. There are several DTs there, safties like Mark Baron, maybe a WR depending what we take first. We would still have our #34 pick as well for a DT or WR. That is a pretty good stable of young players and we would continue to build next year with Clevelands first pick which will likely be 10-12 range. If we like a qb Barkley and Landry Jones will be coming out next year and who knows who the next RG3 will be. Heck at #22 or #34 we could still get a QB like Tannenhill who will NEED time behind someone to grow. Point is we all know teams that have succeeded are built around defense. Look at Houston getting to the playoffs with TJ Yates, Cincy with Dalton, Bal with Flacco, Denver with Tebow. Yes elite qbs win super bowls but we all consider Peyton elite and he has only won 1. He has a very mediocre playoff record. Franchise elite qbs don't mean you will win Super Bowls...even look at Tom Brady. As an elite qb he hasn't won a single one. Before he was one when he was rising he won three playing good ball but mostly riding on defense and a kicker. Eli and Rothlisberger won all theres behind great defenses with offensive outburst sure. Brees and Mannings both came years when their defense stepped up. I mean I could go on and on but I would say defense is just as important as elite qbs. Elite qbs can get you over the top but you can build a team the other way too. There are just as many quality playoff teams and franchises built behind defense than a qb.

I really like Luck with the pick but if some team throws rediculous picks at us because someone jumps up at 2 then I might be ok with trading the rights to Luck for 4 or 5 picks. I mean New Orleans did it for Ricky we might see a desperate team offer the moon for luck if they don't win out for the #2 pick. Wierd stuff happens.

I agree with basically everything you said, very good post.

Also, this is a good point that I was thining about. It actually would be cheaper to trade the #1 pick. It would cost about the same or probably a little more to sign the rookies you would get in a trade compared to what it would cost to sign the #1 pick. The difference is that if you draft a quarterback #1, then you have more holes that you have to fill with free agents. That would get kind of expensive with both Peyton Manning and a #1 pick on the roster.

  7. I think you forgot some major cons.

he is currently rehabbing from multiple (3/4?) neck surgeries to correct a nerve issue that affects his triceps of his throwing arm.

we don't know if he can progress his rehab to the point he can throw at an NFL level, let alone his previous pre-injury form.

the doctors have warned us that he could recover to 100%, there is a chance that his progress may plateau, at which point progress should not be expected.

Peyton is rehabbing from 1 neck surgery, his last one. If you want to look at it technically like you seem to like to do, then you should see that.

  8. You are correct in that he is not an old man. However, when deciding between Luck and Manning, age does play a part in the decision. Also, I can't say that I agree with you in that Manning has done a good job of avoiding hits, since it has been thought that the hit that he took agains the Redskins is what lead to his shoulder discomfort, which he played through, which led to multiple surgeries. It was an on the field hit that has been reported to have started this whole injury.

Well of course he's going to take hits, he plays quarterback. He limits the number of hits he takes, you have to at least agree with that.

  9. I may be stupid (good editing there Coltsouth), but believing that a #1 draft pick will be a bust whilst assuming all the trade picks we could get in his place will be elite is quite silly. If Hughes proves he is an NFL starter, then I will be very happy. I also believe that he will not become anything else but camp fodder.

Your right that would be silly... but why did you mention it? Find me a post where I said that Luck will be a bust and everyone else will be elite. You won't, so I'm trying to understand your post.

And I didn't call you stupid lol, I said if you draft dumb enough to pick players who will take at least as long as Jerry Hughes to develop then go ahead. Since your not drafting I'm also not sure how you portrayed that to yourself. I guess you just misunderstood what I said.

  10. when did i say that? LOL our D sucks. deal with it. our O will suck too when Wayne/Saturday/Manning is gone. deal with that, too! this stupid "quick fix, SB next year!!!" garbage you guys are spitting is ridiculous, and not a possibility. hahaha

You said we need more then a couple of players to become a good team, but you yourself listed 5 players on our defense who are good. Add 2 or 3 players to that, plus the other guys you are undervalueing, and you've got some pretty good players on defense.

And if it's so stupid like you seem to think, why do you keep responding? And your laughing at the end of your comment proves that you are now trolling. You are trying to get a reaction, but I deal in logic when it comes to things like this.

And why did you selectively respond to my comments? Don't avoid the other parts, their designed to counter what you said, which is what they did.

  11. I like your style of arguement, it's civil and not attacking, which is great. Thank you for that. Now let me counter with what I noticed right away from your previous statement. There were a lot of "if"s, and what that immediately signaled to me was that there is a lot of uncertainty with this situation, right? If Manning were clearly healthy and if he could throw at previous levels, then perhaps the Colts may consider trading the pick. However, the situation as it is currently presented is so much in favor of the Colts drafting Luck, simply because of the uncertainty that Manning's situation provides. the Colts can't operate in the dark. Between the two situations, it's clear that they have to draft Luck. You have stated that the Manning's doctors have cleared him to play and that the nerve regenration is a matter of time. Again, this would indicate to the Colts that they are uncertain of when and if Manning can actually regain his level of play. Lastly, you used Favre as a measuring stick for age. Bad idea considering that we look at Favre as an exception. The fact that Favre played well at his old age was what made it such an interesting story. The not so interesting stories are of the numerous old QBs who played poorly and quietly left the league, without much notice. That's what happens to a majority of the older QBs. Their ability to play diminishes with age.

Kurt Warner? He retired at 38 and he was playing as good as ever. It's not a matter of age per say, it's a matter of being in football shape. You could have a 60 year old playing quarterback if he could take some hits from playing the quarterback position and if he had a good arm. 35 years isn't that old, and Manning hasn't been hit very much over the years because of his ability to avoid it. He's not an old man like some people try to portray him to be.

  12. we are more than a few players away. talent on D is limited to Freeney, Mathis, Bethea, Nevis, and Angerer. everyone else is JV. that's ALOT of holes to fill. and those holes will have to wait till the 2nd round and on.

and whose to say that all those players we took instead of Luck would work out? what if we have a TERRIBLE 2012 draft? you completely glossed over the part where i said that if we trade the pick we absolutely 100% must win the Superbowl or the fanbase will completely revolt. if we have a terrible season, and Manning retires or gets worse in his last couple years, and we watch Luck have a Canton-bound career somewhere else, EVERYONE will be losing their s******.

better to start over without Wayne, Saturday, Clark, and yes, Peyton Manning. the O is gonna be completely gutted. we have a few bad seasons, and begin the climb again to the top of the AFC.

"but I don't want a couple of bad seasons!!!! i want a SB nowwwwwww!!!!!!! waaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!" LOL

? Do you even know how a team is built? Do you actually think that every player at every position on a top team is a stud pro bowler? Give me a break...

Since you like your what if questions, as most Andrew Luck people do... what if all 5 so draft picks we get for Luck become Hall of Famers elsewhere and Luck doesn't work out? We could have had one of the best teams ever. Now you should realize how silly your what if questions are...

The point of drafting is to draft well duh... not to be scared of messing up. That's a horrible attitude to have.

  13. Im saying the bills cause look how hard it is to find a franchise QB. When Kelly retired then they went down the tube. I dont want to have the colts be in the bottom of the barrel for years. And when a prospect that is being compared to Elway and Manning. Take them.

Yeah the Bills might not have had a good quarterback for a long time, but they haven't had a good defense, offense, or overall team for a while either. Their offense is starting to turn around, but their defense is still not very good.

  14. value FA? with all that cap space eaten up?

this isn't a magic turnaround. this is not a 1 offeseason rebuild. how can you realistically believe we will contend for the SB, let alone make the PO's? talented youth? making an impact and being successful IMMEDIATELY? excuse me while i type this, I am actually laughing out loud.

i also assume that you think nothing of the Texans, that they must be garbage and easy pushovers. dangerous move.

If we trade the #1 pick, then the colts can a lot of talented players to improve this team. We are only a few players away from having a good defense and overall team.

  15. Can the mods just ban this guy already? He started a troll topic in the draft section saying Luck is a bust then saying the thread was "an experiment" and now he is just spamming "hater". . .at least give him a T.O! :)

Lol if you don't like what he posts... Then don't read it. He's just on the opposite end of the Peyton Manning/Andrew Luck spectrum compared to some people on this website.

  16. Oh haha, yeah, my post wouldn't make too much sense if it were about Peyton. I understand why you said ? haha

Yeah, communication is key, but give them time. They just got into office and have to essentially hire a brand new coaching staff and get everything ready for the Combine. We never once heard Mathis or Garcon or any other FA open his mouth and say anything

Garcon and Mathis might have been contacted, but we don't know. With Reggie seeing all these other players getting new deals, he's probably starting to get a little nervous. At least give him a quick call or something to keep him up to date. That's probably what I would do at the least.

  17. Wayne said something like "I haven't been contacted by Pagano or Grigs yet. I guess there's a certain pecking order and I'm not very high on it". To me, that seems like he is going out of his way to make the new management/coaches seem like the bad guy and he is trying to make it seem like after doing so much for the franchise, no one cares about him.

Oh... I thought you were talking about Peyton Manning...

Anyways, I would like to talk to my boss if I need a new contract. Communcation is key, and it doesn't seem like the colts are very good at it right now. Most people would probably be a little upset in Wayne's situation.

  18. Because he knows the Colts have uncertain cap issues with Peyton, yet still goes out of his way to say "I'm not going to make it easy on them to re-sign me". And he tries to make the organization seem like the bad guy by saying they haven't contacted him yet. I'm almost 100% sure he won't be back in Indy next year

    ?

  19. Interestingly, in my extensive watching of the combine coverage, it seems to me that RG3 is the QB being most hyped at this point. It seems like a case of everybody has just simply anointed Luck as being the # 1 QB prospect without question and all the hype has moved on to RG3 and the others.

As for Luck, he's been recognized as the number 1 QB prospect for two years, now. He is touted as being football smart and a QB conductor in the mold of Peyton Manning. The thing I found most striking about the combine coverage is that Luck measured out athletically to be on virtual par with Cam Newton. It seems to me that this fact completely cements Luck as the better prospect than RG3. I accept that RG3 is the better "athlete", but if you accept the measurables of Luck being on par with Cam Newton, then the athletic advantage that RG3 offers becomes quite negligible in a practical on the field sense.

I still stand by the notion, though, that if Manning has less than 3 years left as an elite starter, you take Luck. If Manning can offer up more than 3 years as an elite starter, you trade the # 1 pick for a boat load in return (I still think to Cleveland for QB Colt McCoy, DT Phil Taylor, both of the Browns' 2012 1st rounders and perhaps even a 1st or 2nd rounder in 2013).

I am of the opinion that for the next 3 - 5 years, the Colts would be a much stronger team under Manning / trade pick scenario.

If the colts did trade the pick I think they would be a very good team too with Peyton Manning. We could draft a lot of talented players this year and fill a lot of our needs. For some reason, a few people on this forum act like rookies don't contribute, which is definitely not the case.
