  1. So you trade the pick, and you get 4 or 5 picks back or whatever. Yes they are still equal in value. But now is where you run into the "value" problem. If Luck(who is the clear #1 overall pick) goes on to have a great career somewhere else. The 4 or 5 picks the Colts get in return must go on to have legitimately good careers to match the value Luck brought with the #1 pick.

If Luck goes on to have a great career and the Colts hardly get anything or maybe 1 or 2 of those picks pan out, now all of a sudden the value is offset.

By passing up on 1 player and putting the eggs in the basket of a bunch of players, there is a lot of risk.

This is why the #1 pick is almost never traded. The risk in return does not make sense when a team is poised to take the BEST player in the draft. Why trade down from the best player into the draft for lesser players with higher risk? It does not make sense.

It actually has worked for the Chargers twice but in both situations they got burned in the end and have won 0 SB's since. I dont blame the Colts but they got burned badly with the Elway issue. That was really out of the Colts' hands though.

    Thank you.

Yeah if you want to trade the pick, then you have to draft properly. It will be more difficult, but if Peyton Manning is healthy, then the return on those picks is higher than just drafting Andrew Luck.

  2. Because you are flaunting your "algebra" skills on an internet forum but don't know the difference between your and you're and use 'no' instead of 'know'. I'm not perfect at grammar or spelling but I try to make sure my posts make sense.

You're also going way off topic.

That being said, another poster brought up the fact that teams like Miami skip out on QB's each year only to take one the next year and it has killed them at the QB position.

You replied with Green Bay and New England. Two teams who were set at the QB position when they took their successors. New England and Green Bay are a completely different situation from a team like Miami. It does not even make sense logically to compare them. That is why everyone is face-palming at you.

Imagine if the Steelers stayed with Maddox and passed up on Big Ben for a QB "3 or 4 years later" down the draft. The point is, when in position you take the best QB possible when the need is the greatest. The Patriots and Packers did not have a huge need for QB when they took their respective QBs. Rodgers can be debated but he sat for 3 years before becoming significant. Because at the time Favre was healthy, still a good quarterback, and they were still contending even in 2007. Unlike the Colts who don't have a healthy quarterback, are rebuilding, and are going to be a different team next year.

The Colts are in need of a QB right now because nobody knows how Manning will come out of this. If Manning was 100% healthy and never had these surgeries, then you can make an argument to wait a few years. Unfortunately some people are blinded by ignorance and do not realize Manning is notimmortal. He is injured and we are poised to take the best QB in the draft.

Half of this made no sense and was not relevant. Maddox to Roethlisberger? Who is the better quarterback? Maddox had a down poor year the year that Roethlisberger was drafted and he was benched in favor of Ben and Charlie Batch several times.

And if you consider a = b + c is flaunting someone's algebra skills, then you are just plain ignorant.

And you won't answer the fact that trading the pick is equal in value to not trading it. You don't have to dodge the question either, it's not embarrasing or anything like that.

  3. I was very good at algebra. I'm also pretty good at being right. I was never very good at grammar; However, i did notice you used "no" in place of "know" and forgot to put an apostrophe for "Luck's"... but then again, what do i "know". :lombardi:

    1. Since when is grammar a priority on a blog? Your taking that part a little too far.

    2. Why didn't you respond to the actual meaningful part of the post? I see how you tried to dodge the logic part. Is it because you know the algebra proved the logic right, and that you don't want to admit to it?

  4. lol, these last few posts have been the best ever. I have now been called a Manning "Fanboy" so I guess I take that with a smile and after thinking long and hard, I guess I am.

Cause see when I graduated from High School the Colts became a passion to me. I worked hard all week just to make the money to go buy a scapped ticket to see my beloved Colts play on Sunday's because way back then they were never on TV. Sometimes when things were real tough, because they are when your starting out in life, I would go to a secret location and pay $25 to watch the Colts on pirated satellite. See I loved the Colts and my week always revolved around them. I sat through the horrible years and rooted knowing they would probable not win but if they did, man it was nice. Then there was the miracle year where we were one hail marry from going to the Super Bowl in the "Let it Rip" years. These were the years when small market teams never had a chance. I went and stood in line, in the rain, and bought my Touch Down Monkey and Extra point Monkey when others just laughed. I went to training camp opening day every year for the last 27 years. I have missed three home games in 18 years of being a STH and two of those were this year. I can remember the draft in 98 when we took a young kid from TN who turned around a franchise that was going no where. Was the laughing stock of the league and the whipping boy for most of the league. I was there, every Sunday. I watched one of the greatest QB's, turn a City and a franchise around in two years. He gave us hope every week that we could win, he made it proud to be a Colts fan. I cried when he won us a Super Bowl because I knew how much of my life and time, not to mention the financial sacrifices I had made to go to games. All the jeers I endured from friends and co-workers through it all but I kept my chin up and believed. Now the organization that I never doubted is on the verge of just saying, thx Peyton but we don't need you anymore, you made us who we are but pack up and move on. You didn't miss a game in 13 years, you won more games and took us to more consecutive playoff games than any other franchise in league history but hey, your done. You can play but it will have to be for another team now because there's this new guy that we think will be better than you and we want him now so sorry your 13 years don't mean anything to us. Oh and by the way, sorry about that perfect season we had going that we just gave away because stats didnt mean anything but hey the very next week we let certain players achieve there goals but we weren't worried about them getting hurt in a meaningless game. Oh and one last thing, don't say anything till after March 3rd because we don't want to upset the STH and have them not renew there tickets.

See, a lot of the so called Fans on here have only been a part of the winning, the Manning years but my support goes way beyond Manning. As I have gotten older I have seen many players come and go but never a player as special as Peyton Manning. I have seen what he has done for us, the Colts Fan and the League. I believe in respect, loyality and in this case, trust. If Peyton Manning is healthy and can play this game, he deserves to play with the team he built, the francise he took upon his shoulders and carried for 13 years. A lot of people want the Colts to take Luck and that is fine, they have there opinions but don't call people out because they don't see eye to eye with you. This goes way beyond money and whats best for the franchise with me! So if I'm a Manning "FanBoy" I'm proud of it because I've earned that right. Good luck to the next generation of Colts fans and I hope your years with Luck are half of what my memories were with Manning.

    Nice post!

  5. Nope. I am a REALISTIC Colts Fan. You know, the one that realizes 'when you know what' has hit the fan... and that it's time to move on. No sense in trading our 2012 Starting QB-- Andrew Luck. Get used to it, this is the new Colts.

Really? a = b + c or something like that? You have to at least no a little algebra..

    Andrew Luck = a

    Trade return = b

    a = b

a is directly proportional to b which means that as a increases, b increases and as a decreases, b decreases. Since Andrew Lucks value is very high, that means that the trade return value is very high.

    It's just simple algebra.

  6. I said almost without exception. The number of 1st round quarterbacks that became franchise quarterbacks is staggering. I'm not saying all these guys are HOF's or even Pro-bowlers, but they are currently franchise quarterbacks that in most cases you build a team around. It all starts there...the quarterback...and if you have a shot at getting a great one it could setup your franchise for a decade. Hey, I love the Tom Brady story as much as everyone else, but the odds are against it.

Compare the list below to that of notable 2nd round quarterbacks (Favre, Esiason, Drew Brees, Ken Stabler...and that's about it). You have Matt Shaub, Dan Fouts, Joe Montana, and Frank Tarkenton who were 3rd round picks and not much else of note from that round. After that you have Rich Gannon and Joe Theisman who were 4th round picks and Matt Hasselbeck who was a 6th round pick along with TB. I won't even bring in guys like Unitas and Staubach who were in the 10+ round days. My point being that there are almost as many starting/franchise quarterbacks drafted in the 1st round as there have been notable quarterbacks in all the other rounds since the beginning of the NFL. The sheer number of drafts in round 2-6 over a span of 30+ years is vast compared to the sum of round 1 picks.

    1st Round Quarterbacks

    John Elway

    Troy Aikman

    Drew Bledsoe

    Peyton Manning

    Michael Vick

    Chad Pennington

    Ben Rothlisberger

    Jay Cutler

    Carson Palmer

    Philip Rivers

    Eli Manning

    Alex Smith

    Erin Rodgers

    Matt Ryan

    Joe Flacco

    Mark Sanchez

    Josh Freeman

    Matthew Stafford

    Cam Newton

    Bold denotes 1st overall pick

What is the first round quarterback list of? Just first round quarterbacks that you wanted to list? Don't forget guys like Andy Dalton and Ryan Fitspatrick, 6th and 2nd rounders respectively. A lot of quarterbacks come from the first round, but that doesn't mean they have too.

And the almost without exception part, you basically said that it almost never happens, when that is not true.

  7. The worst idea of the year award, congrats. Yeah, its a really great idea to pass up "the pick" of the decade to again pick #1 and get a lesser QB replacement for Peyton next year... Peyton isn't playing for us anymore, get over it.

Do you know algrebra? It does not seem like it, as a bunch of Luck fans don't seem to know algebra.

The better the player, the higher the amount you would get in a trade...

You must be a Patriots fan, as it would be a horrible idea because the colts would get several talented players and defeat the Patriots even more. I can see your point now, it would be a horrible idea for New England.

  8. I remember when I was rooting for the Colts to loose the last game of the season because I wanted the #1 overall pick so the Colts could trade it and get numerous picks to address several area's of need. Now we have sat through a month and haif of Manning Gate and it is the same thing everyday. The soap opera continues everyday. Now I know how the Packers must have felt when Favre was replaced but at least they had a prepared Rodgers ready to take the reigns.

If I only knew what I knew now I might have rooted for them to win that last game so we wouldn't have the #1 overall pick and all this talk of replacing Manning would be different I think. What would we be thinking then? Wouldn't it be nice to be #2 overall and have a healthy Manning coming back into the fold? Would we be talking about drafting RG3? How things could have been different if we just had won that last game.

I wanted them to win in it, just like I never wanted them to end up with the number 1 pick. I knew all this drama and speculation was going to happen...

  9. The #1 way to run a franchise into the ground is to start without a franchise quarterback. These type of players are not "commodities"...they are extremely difficult to come by and we just so happen to have the 1st overall pick in a draft year with two of the best quarterback options you could hope for. We have no idea if Peyton can play again. We MUST take Andrew Luck or RGIII. Let the rest of the draft shape out how it will.

Everyone is trying to trade down and get an entire team of great players...well it doesn't work that way. There are skill positions that have to be drafted highly and almost without exception that starts at QB.

There's was no need to put that little comment there in the end, as you yourself no it's not true.

  10. I totally disagree with your position. If Peyton should suffer injury again in any form, we are back to what we just went through... with no hope, just agony.. And if a lesser name second tier backup is good enough to win games for us (which they won't be), Luck should have a great setup to learn his Frosh year. And if you have a backup good enough to be next man up should Peyton get injured, then he will likely cost as well, but doesn't have Luck's future upside.

You people and your what if questions...

What if Andrew Luck wants to pursue a career in professional sand volleyball?

  11. So I give you an example of when a team waits to long to draft a QB and you give me examples of a team that had solid back-up(Green-Bay), a 6th round pick who only got his chance due to injury (Patriots), and a solid (and I use that word hesitantly) late round pick that would be average on any other team? I don't understand where you're coming from.

Your analysis of this doesn't make very much sense. You didn't give me example, you gave me 3 teams that haven't been good in a while, and I gave you 3 teams that have been good for a while...
