  1. I think 2009 put the whole "rust" issue to rest. We shut it down with two weeks to go, and had a bye, yet we still went to the Super Bowl with two playoff wins. I would obviously prefer that we go all out, especially when we're undefeated, but I don't think it's accurate to say that shutting key players down late in the season has ever cost us anything. There are only two late season situations where we shut it down and then lost the first playoff game, 2005 and 2007. To me, 2005 was more about James Dungy than anything else, and we still should have won that game, despite the early mistakes. In 2007, we lost because 1) Marvin Harrison and Kenton Keith couldn't hold on to the football, and 2) we couldn't rush the passer, and that had nothing to do with rust. Ironically, it was due to injury. Also ironically, in 2009, we shut our key players down, and then Freeney gets injured in the playoffs, proving that injuries can happen at anytime. Not that that's an argument for shutting it down, just pointing out that you can't prevent injuries, even by shutting it down. Like I said, I don't like shutting it down, especially with a perfect season on the line, but I don't think it's ever been the reason we've lost games.

The defensive player philosophy has changed, I think. Chris Rucker, Kevin Thomas and Jerraud Powers aren't the so-called "Cover 2" corners of the past. They can all play man coverage, and we should use them to do so. Joe Lefeged has good size for a safety. Kavell Conner is a bigger linebacker than we've typically had. Drake Nevis and Rico Mathews have great size on the line. We added 5-tech ends with Jamaal Anderson and Tyler Brayton, and it's only because of the injuries at tackle that we've had to use them inside from time to time. There was a noticeable change in the size of defensive players that we drafted the minute Dungy left. I really like Dungy, but he held us back in many ways, his "small but fast" criteria for defenders being not the least of them.

I don't see how Caldwell can survive this season, especially not after the other night. I don't see how Coyer can survive the bye week. It would be in Caldwell's best interests to cut ties with Coyer, bring in a more principled coordinator, and hope that the defense gets better and we squeak out a couple wins over the course of the last few games, and then maybe he gets another year. But if we even have one more bad showing (and Sunday wasn't bad, it was gag-inducing), it's going to be a significant blow to any chances this coaching staff has of keeping their jobs. Any kind of 450+ yard / 30+ point performance against us, and people have got to be held accountable. I still don't believe we're as bad as our record indicates. We're certainly not as bad as 62-7 says we are.

We are lucky to only be 0-7 in my opinion. Rust wasnt the issue in 2009, it was heart. The players were denied the chance of immortality by the cowards in the suits. We should have went roaring into the Super Bowl, not just 'rested and ready'.

  2. What I see are young players who make bad decisions which young players do, I see poor tackling and such. What are U seeing?

Give a bad coach a bad hand, and he goes 0-16. Enter stage right....the Polians. I cannot believe we are debating coaching skills on here. Why? Caldwell is a bust on the scale of Jerry Hughes squared.

  3. Guys the Polian show is a PR move for the Colts they aren't gong to come out and talk about how awful they are even after they lose 62-7 part of their job is to put some spin on things. It's up to us to decide what is spin and what is fact. Don't be shocked that Polian didn't rip anyone on the show Monday, you don't sell a product (which is part of his job) to someone by talking about how awful it is. I am sure there is ripping and blaming and trying to figure out what the problem is and how to fix it going forward going on where it should be going on, behind closed doors.

Look is Polian part of the problem? Maybe but let's be honest his teams have had two losing seaons since he got here before this one and both times and showed he knew how to make a quick fix as they reversed the record each time going form 3-13 to 13-3 the first time and 6-10 to 10-6 the second time. He's going to get at least the chance to see if he can do it again.

I've heard lots of people talk about who they want if Caldwell is fired but who do people want if Polian is fired? I don't say as any kind of shot I am honestly currious.

A very fair comment. Now clearly we very seldom agree on anything, so this will not disappoint. I don't care who should replace Bill. But someone with more relevance and understanding of the current game. Not a 20 year old philosophy which is rapidly failing. I'd even suggest we don't need a GM, we need a team of experts who can select, plan and implement a decent front office operation. Dictatorship is not working. Nor is the worst coach in the NFL right now.

  4. First of all, the draft we just had this past April was a freaking home run. Every pick was good, every pick fit a need, and every player had a great track record in terms of their size and durability. People keep conveniently ignoring the 2011 Draft and pointing to 08, 09, and 10. Well, really they just point to the 1st round picks from each of those, because the other players have been mostly solid. Now Brown is even showing us something behind an o-line that's doing it's job.

Next, why don't you outline for us exactly what goes on in the locker room, and at the meetings? Then tell me everything that you know, with 100% certainty, coach Caldwell is or isn't doing. Tell me what every single player on the team thinks of their coach, and whether or not they candidly believe he's doing a good job. Also, explain in detail how you know for a fact that our woes this year belong squarely on him.

Better yet, don't do any of that, because you can't. No one here knows a thing about coaching a professional team. No one here knows a thing about building a franchise. No one here knows at all who is (most) responsible. I don't, you don't, no one who "knows a guy" does either.

I am not a Caldwell homer. I do not see things through Caldwell/Polian colored glasses. I am not a fan of how things are going at this moment, and yet I know better than to pretend I know exactly what is transpiring. A very fine line separates the winners and losers in this league. A drop here, a fumble there, a silly penalty, whatever, and we're 5-2 without Manning. It could also go the other way and maybe we're 2-5 having only beaten the Texans and the Saints. Someone has to lose those games, and our players just haven't been consistent. A coach can't do anything more to keep his guys from fumbling.

Belichick did pilot an 11-5 team without his star QB; turns out Cassel is pretty good too. But they lost all 5 games to teams that made the playoffs, and they missed the playoffs. In the Manning vs. Brady debate, the 2008 season holds water, as the Patriots offense was putting up the same kinds of numbers it has for a while now. But the Patriots did miss the playoffs, so that's really not much different than going 0-16.

Tomlin didn't do anything. Ben Roethlisberger isn't the key to the Steelers. Their defense is. As long as that side of the ball was in-tact, they could have kept games close with Tavaris Jackson. Again, they weren't blowing people out, but they were in those games. A few balls bounced their way and they got the wins. I sincerely doubt Tomlin "willed" his team to win, or "coached" his players better on how not to fumble at the worst possible moment. Prove, without a shadow of a doubt, exactly how Tomlin was responsible for their 4-1 record without Ben. Leave no room for reasonable doubt, leave all opinions out of it, and make sure you are able to explain exactly how it was Tomlin who was responsible for it.

Is Tomlin not also held accountable for getting pasted by the Ravens earlier this year? How about the fact that the Steelers are DEAD LAST in the league in forcing turnovers in 2011?

Belichick has been smashed in the playoffs two years in a row, at home, against teams he beats in the regular season. Is that not the same 1-and-done mentality that deserves a firing? He even played his best WR in a meaningless game which lead to a season-ending injury. Isn't that thoughtless coaching? He had the best team ever assembled and puts up a paltry 14 points to the 5th seed from a vastly inferior NFC conference in the Super Bowl; he got out-coached then, right? What about the 4th and 2 play? The look on his face said it all; he threw his defense under the bus, right?

I can point out just as many mistakes that these coaches have made as Jim Caldwell during the same span of seasons. The fact is, coaches make mistakes, players have to execute, someone has to win or lose.

Phenomenal post. Be careful though, or people will claim you think Caldwell is the greatest coach ever. It's not possible to see things reasonably, or admit we don't know everything, or even have hope going forward. You have to absolutely hate Caldwell when we're losing, and then be completely hypocritical when we're winning. You must only point out a few awkward coaching decisions or draft picks, forget everything else, and jump on the bandwagon to hate Jim Caldwell or else you are just a blind homer. If you call them blind haters, you will be flamed, and a moderator will stop you, not them, from posting.

    Just a warning... :hide:

The FO has been failing for years. Manning covered up most of the cracks, and the SB win also. Our defense was putrid that year, and we got lucky on our PO opponents. With Manning we've always been great against the traditionally strong D / weak O teams, with a few exceptions. Kansas, we knew all we had to do was stop Larry Johnson. Ravens, well, we just needed to score a few points to win, which we did. The Ravens offense was never going to hurt us. We got lucky v the Patriots in a shoot-out, but Dungy made some good h/t adjustments. Chicago - well come on. Probably the worst SB team in ages.

Trying to rally fans and spout semantics to suggest we are still a great team or have a good coaching model is just wrong. To say Polian is not past is prime is denial. I still will my team on every week, and will continue to do so, but something needs to change for next season, and before the draft. In a big way.

So if I, or others decide to rally against the current regime, it's because we are sick of the pathetic droning mantra we hear every year about our 'philosophy'. The winds of change are blowing through the big open window of the LOS, and I can't wait.

And yes, I know a million times less than Polian or Caldwell about all things NFL, but I don't care. My opinion counts more to me than what others think. Just like yours. Keep believing in your own views by all means. It's what this forum is for.

    Go well.

  5. That's for sure. If we want to get another Super Bowl, the org will have to grow a pair and tell Peyton to make due with receviers we can get him. This team has to rebuild the defensive and offensive lines.

What? Where is it confirmed Manning has any say in personnel decisions? Make belief. But you are right, the org does need to grow some......and get rid of you know who....

  6. I think this is the first time I ever agreed with you.

The worst thing that an organization can do is make rash, irrational decisions. Even though it is not popular with the lynch mob mentality right now, taking a measured approach is a far better solution.

Yes. Because making rash irrational decisions might make this team the laughing stock of the league. It's time to act now. At least get rid of Caldwell and Coyer with immediate effect. I know my dream of a Polianless Colts won't happen for a while yet, but one can always dream....

  7. I'll say it again, the coaching has not been perfect. I've pointed out my issues wih the coaching in other threads. I have even said the time has come for Coyer to go. Does that sound like someone who is saying coaching isn't part of the issue?

As for Polian, just earlier today I brought up how Ugoh was Polian's biggest bust here. I said Brown was a bust as well. The man has made mistakes I never said he didn't.

With that said the players have not been perfect either. People seem to just excuss that away by saying those plays did not matter and scap goat the coaching staff. Heck some around here can't even bring themselves to give the coaches credit when they do something right like the good calls to go Garcon. What do people say about that? Oh Manning must have called those plays.

There are a lot of issues going on right now, everyone can share in some of the blame in this and it's not going to be a simple fix of just firing one person. If I told anyone that by week four half the team's opening day starters would be out due to injury, we would be down to one DT, three of the four captains would be pretty much on IR and the only one who wasn't is our kicker, we were down to one hurt o-lineman from having to play someone like Brody Eldridge on the o-line, we were down to what the Colts viewed as their third string QB on opening day what do you think people would be expecting to have happen to us? I know people don't like to use injuries as excuse but sometimes they are part of the reason. Most around here aren't even willing to admit that.

With that said, being hurt has nothing to do with not being able to get off the field on third down all year. Clearly either the players aren't making the plays on third down or Coyer isn't calling up the right plays. I went with the latter, hence why I said it's time for Coyer to go. I will admit his hands were a little handcuffed last night due to injuries but that doesn't account for the other three games. I will also say part of that is because we don't have good enough players on defense either. I laid out a plan in the draft thread as to how I would fix that. I would draft a cornerback with our high pick. I would take a safety in the mid to late rounds since Bullitt is going Bob Sanders on us. I think if we do that and add a DT some where in the draft for depth reasons you will see our defense improve dramaticly.

Also it pretty clear here that some people have a personal grudge against Bill Polian. They have been waiting for us to lose since the Jets game so they could scream get ride of them and if they want to do that fine that's their right. However, Jim Irsay isn't going to fire him for having one bad season in 10 years. A lot of people just seem to over look that.

No we aren't a one man team. However, that doesn't mean that Peyton Manning doesn't mean the world to our team. Peyton doesn't win games by himself but it's pretty clear that in three of the four games we've played this year our biggest issue has been the QB poistion and there is a pretty good likely hood that if we had Peyton Manning this team would be at worst 3-1 if not 4-0 because the Texans game would in all likely hood been different because I'd bet you Manning takes that INT that started the game down and turns it into a TD and I doubt he would have fumbled two snaps. Peyton pretty much won two MVPs because of how important he was viewed to be to our team. That is being proven right. Everything on our team is based on Peyton Manning and we you take that away you can't over come that. That's what happens when you have a super star and you build around him and then gets hurt in sports. You struggle to over come it. That's why Peyton gets paid the money he does because he's worth it to our team. We have probably at least two hall of famers on this team besides Manning in Wayne and Freeney if not three depending on what Mathis does (and I am not counting AV in that). This team isn't lacking talent (when they aren't all hurt), it's lacking it's all world QB that makes the whole ship go. LIke Kravitz said before the Steelers game this isn't like Marlin Jackson or Bob Sanders getting hurt it's Peyton freaking Manning. What do you think would happen to the Sants if Brees went down or to the Chargers if Rivers went down? They would be in the same boat we are in right now.

It's also pretty clear people don't like Caldwell and frankly don't give him a fair shake. Is he perfect? Far from it I've said I don't know how many times I think he's a decent coach. He's not as good as Dungy. He is slow to adjust. His clock managment is a joke (although it's been better this year). He's a little too conservative. However, people wont even give him credit for getting this team to the Super Bowl in his first year after they went one and done the two years before that under Dungy. Then they wont give him credit for gidding an extremely injuried team to a division title last year. Yes I know the Packers won the Super Bowl with as many injuries but again they were the exception to the rule. Just about any other team that was as beat up as the Colts and Packers last year wouldn't have even thought about going to the playoffs. Now this year he loses the guy the team is built around and about 9 other starters and people go oh coaching must be why we aren't winning. It's not the coaching we are running out of good players. Does that make the coaching perfect? No. However is far from the sole or even main reason we are losing like people make it seem.

That's not even including the people who call Caldwell a puppet to Polian but yet turn around and blame Caldwell when things don't go well. If he's a puppet then you can't blame him because he's not making the calls. Then when things do go right the only person people want to give credit to is Peyton Manning. You said it yourself we aren't a one person team. If we aren't a one person team when we lose you can't turn around and say they are one when we win which is what you do when you give Manning all the credit for us winning.

It's one thing to call people out for mistakes it's another to pretend the like the Colts have never been any good or act like this one bad year over rides the past 9 good years. Frankly a lot of fans are doing the later and I think it's because they hold a personal grudge against Polian and Caldwell from the Jets game a couple of years ago and have just been dieing for them to fall on hard times so they could tear into Polian and Caldwell.

You misread my post. We are so a 'one man team'. As Deedub has said, if we have poor players it's because we draft poorly, coach poorly, and we ignore the FA market. Caldwell brought in Coyer. They both need to go.

This great team is slowly getting destroyed by the men in suits, and the men with the headsets. Injuries happen, and we've had our share of bad luck, but we have a squad of 53. And don't even mention Special Teams. I can assure you I want this team to win games WAY more than oi want to gloat at the Polian Dynasty.

    Such a waste.

  8. I am getting really tired of any post that isn't bashing Jim Caldwell being dismissed as if it's Jim Caldwell coaching. The INT and tackling last night were key plays. I've said in other posts that I didn't think the coaching was perfect either but it was far from the only thing that went wrong last night. Just because someone has a different view point as you doesn't mean they are the coach. Let me guess you are just being a realist though right?

Pray tell, what is the reason for us being out of the play-offs by week 4? You don't blame the Polians and you don't blame the coaching. So what is wrong.

We are not a one man team, so why are we so poor without Manning?

The fact is, we are a one man team, and our FO and Coaching Staff have been bailed out for years by #18. Irsay needs to act now.

  9. Our D had been putrid for years. We will not win another SB in the Manning years unless we purge our pathetic HC and DC staff and bring in a defensive minded HC who will bring in his own team. All these pathetic excuses about injuries and rookies is hog wash. Out and out clueless defensive coaching - planning, style, adjustment and creativity. It is embarrassing to watch. Somebody within the Colts organisation must know this, so why are they not doing something about it?

Irsay needs to get off Twitter and get himself a Front Office that is willing to swing the axe. Before this franchise collapses and the LA vultures descend.

  10. Brody has some tools. My wife and her family are all Chefs (great googly moogly) fans and Croyle played behind a poor line with no running game and no offensive coordinator and was still able to do some good things. I think he'd be better than Colorblind Dan Orlovsky, but Orlovsky is probably a bit more familiar with the system.

Being familiar with the system doesn't matter to us, in that we brought in Collins, whilst ignoring Curtis.

  11. Where's all the nay sayers about the colts defense now!!! who was that guy that was quoting stats and all last week!! where's your stat sheet now mate lol

0-3 is the only stat that matters. We gave up 23 points at home. Our pass defense is putrid. Clearly some positives from last night, but hardly the time to be proclaiming our D is great.

I like your optimism of course.

  12. I don't think I'm superior. I just know that the fans don't know even a fraction of what they think they do. I'm at least willing to admit that.

Notice I didn't make any comparisons to the fans and myself. I know these coaches, analysts, and scouts get paid to breathe football all day. We don't, but a lot of fans talk like they could do it better.

So next time, learn to read everything in a post, and think before responding.

Yep, fair enough. I take it back....and I apologise...

  13. It only further establishes just how little the fans actually know about football.

Lacey was playing pretty tight too, which is another thing these fans clamor for. To beat tight coverage, and offense just needs to run slants and other routes that rely on body position. It's also a good way to get beat deep.

You really do sound like you think are a superior football expert. Which you are not.
