  1. a bite early to count him out????????? What games have you been watching Gonzalez has not been preforming in the past TWO years.... He is a bust and so far brown and hugh are about to get on the same rollar coaster. Why we take Brown and Hughes in the first place is beyond me. We should have gone DT and a freaking Lineman

What part of his early plays are you ignoring? He's got a hammy. Are you slammin' Peyton for being a girl? If he doesn't make it this year, then fine, but don't call time out on a friggin week one hammy.

  2. You think the NFL wants that crappy PR?

No way. It may be a slap on the hand.

If anything gets said to players at all about the uniform policy.

    Total respect from London.

On a lighter note, instead of nice patriotic gloves, what about our WR's wearing nice big foam fingers with heavy duty velcro? May help those wild rushed Kerry throws?

Back to serious, thoughts are with you guys on a tough weekend.

  3. I am talking specifically about Gonzo - calling him a bust simply is not accurate. I am not cherry picking anything.

By you commenting on Gonzo as a bust - aren't you cherry picking yourself by finding a player who, for whatever the reason, has not been able to help the team as anyone would have hoped. I mean aren't you selecting a player to support your belief that Polian is not all that any longer?

I don't need to cherry pick to show Polian's failures since 2007. Really, I don't, the facts are there for all to see. And you are cherry picking.

  4. Sometimes your dislike of Polian takes completely away from rational thought.

Gonzo was not injured in college. There was no evidence that he would be as injury prone as he has proven to be the last 2 years. On top of that, he was very productive in his first two years. You can knock on Polian for Hughes, Brown, Ugoh but the Gonzo thing is off base. I don't think a player can labeled a bust if it is injuries that keep him off the field.

In a business that lives off end results, I somewhat disagree with you. Your premise is quite right of course, but the irrational sychophantic praising of a GM (any GM) who wins because of his great drafting, but is then protected form his failures when he drafts poorly is what irritates me. I don't dislike Polian, I just believe his input into this franchise is wildly over-rated, and he has been a disaster on many fronts for the last 5 years or so.

The arguments on this forum which continue to keep Bill on a pedastal are cherry picked in the same manner as our friendly Patriots fans use to hold Brady in higher esteem than #18.

  5. Yep. Peyton got the Colts hooked on his junk.

I have read and re-read that quote from Whitlock over and over and I can't make sense of it. I mean to say, I guess I know what he's implying but I cannot understand what would cause him to make such a nefarious suggestion. He almost hinted that Manning is a villain of sorts.

Well, taking $54 million off Irsay when he knew he couldn't really burp his twins........no wonder people get edgy......

  6. It would seem Gonzo is too fragile to play NFL football. What a waste of a first round pick. Can't blame Polian because the kid has talent galore, but when was the last time we could count on him to be there for us?

So who do you blame then? Polian gets the kudos for the great picks, surely he gets the blame for the busts? cant have it both ways......

Also, a bit early to count him out just yet.

  7. What has been the most foolish thing in all of this sorry debacle is the FO not going big in FA to shore up the D. Peyton hadn't practised, and they knew he'd be missing all pre-season. They took a foolish gamble. But our FO is the best ever, so I can't blame them. And if the salaries of all the NFL busts in the last five years would improve the lives of millions of Americans, then Polian deserves a humanatarian badge of honour for helping so many.

  8. Why are we worried? We have the Best GM (or had) in the NFL (by far), in Bill Polian. Do you really think he would build an entire franchise on the back of one player? If Manning goes down, we'll be just fine. We also have a fantastic Head Coach. Just look at Jim's record over the past 2 years.

    Stop worrying.

  9. Well initially I was very surprised and disappointed at this move, but if what was posted about him missing time on an injury that the staff didn't feel was serious then I can definitely see the reasoning for cutting him. However I'm not convinced that Gill or Ogbu are going to be any kind of answer for us, though to be perfectly fair they are both still very young so could definitely improve with time and experience.

The Ghost of Bob Sanders strikes. The Front Office of this club is rotten through it's core. They have replaced one despot with a clone.

We can survive with good or great late rounders whilst we have Peyton, but the future is bleak when we chuck away our top picks, and the cash that goes with it.

This is not about cutting TH, it's about the pathetic ego of Sir Bill of Bust Land.

  10. I assume the Moala remark was for my response. Yes, Moala. Have you watched him at all this preseason? He's easily our 2nd or 3rd best DT so far... a far cry from what he was doing 3 years ago.

Yes, he's our 3rd best DT. Hardly Collie standard. No offense meant, btw.

  11. 1. Dumb Thread.

    2. Hindsight is 20/20; Hughes was a supreme talent in college, and after getting zero pass rush without Freeney against the Saints, every fan on this board was jumping up and down when we made this selection.

    3. For those suggesting it was a stupid move, that would imply that everyone in the world knew it was a bad choice before it happened, including the Polians, but they made the choice anyway.

We don't know enough about him yet for any assumptions to be valid.

So we don't have good players? That's pretty much entirely false, with no room for discussion. Besides, every team (except the Raiders) draft either for their system, or to develop and trade for future picks.

Really? So if draft picks look good on paper, you automatically get a bye? In that case, all the first round successes looked good on paper, so you or I could have done just as well. The end justifies the means in this business. Stop looking for reasons to defend our woeful 1st rounders of recent years.

This blind love of all things 'Polian' is absurd. Bill has been stinking it up in all facets of his job for half a decade. He's living off past glories. He should have been retired, not moved upstairs.

    Moala? Really?

  12. He's a big part of the "real" reason.

Dungy was a great coach, he never took Manning and the Colts to 14-0.

There would have been very few coaches that would have still got Manning and the Colts to the playoffs last year with all the injuries.

It wasn't our pathetic overall rushing offense that got us to the play-offs. Nor our sieve like o-line, or ourpoor run defense or our special teams or our game time decision making or our fabulous utilisation of our 1st round pick. It was Manning's 4700 yards. We got there despite Caldwell.

  13. Yes, inheriting Peyton Manning’s right arm is a great situation for any rookie coach and helped Caldwell’s cause and record. But hiring a reputable coach doesn’t necessarily mean automatic success. Hiring a coach and bringing in his type of players that fits his scheme gives him the best chance of winning. And that is a process that can take years. The colts simply hired someone who had already been on staff and waiting to take over, who shared similar ideas and coaching styles as Tony Dungy. Hiring a coach that fit the current scheme the team already believes in is what the Colts did. A Head Coach is responsible for film room meetings and getting all 53 players ready for Sunday, not Peyton Manning. A coach is responsible for practice and what to work on, not Peyton Manning. Having Peyton Manning be the leader that he is and work ethic helps the cause but he isnt a coach, hes a player. Does Jim Caldwell need to work on game management absolutely, but to say he’s not contributed to the team’s success as others have stated on this board is unreasonable. I personally am not a huge Caldwell fan but do give him credit for dealing with the team and coaching his way to a plus 500 win percentage in his first few years of coaching.

I never said Caldwell hasn't contributed. I was just countering the 'facts' (Win-Loss) that are being used to promote his excellence, when we know the real reason.

  14. Right. All speculation.

My point was more that many Colts fans during Dungys tenure made the case that he was one of the best in the league...and his 'stats' backed that up. Those same fans now dont like Caldwell...even though his 'stats' should hold up fine. You made mention that a reputable coach would take the Colts further, and many share that sentiment...but when you think about it...Dungy 'didnt take the Colts further' either until his 5th year with the team. And when you really think about it...in the last 15 years only 3 teams have won more than one Superbowl: Denver, New England, Pittsburgh. Plenty of other teams have had good coaches, and plenty of other teams have won one Superbowl. Its not easy to win consistently. The jury is out on Caldwell, sure...but some of the reasons some fans 'hate' him are pretty contradictory to the reasons they seem to like other coaches.

Yes. And arguably (probably factually), the best coach / QB combo was BB/TB. And they won the most......

  15. With all due respect - please don't lump me in with your generalizations. In fact we all don't know what a "reputable" coach would do with this team. Saying that you do know is complete foolishness. That is almost as foolish as your contention that resting players in 2009 helped lose the Super Bowl, completely discounting the fact that they won 2 freaking playoff games in between.

Look, I am not certain that Caldwell is the rigth man for the Colts job. My point is, and always has been, that his record as coach is pretty freaking good and that has to count for something. His teams always play hard, they never panic, and are never out of games. YOu contend that is solely on Manning but I just refuse to believe that Caldwell did not play some role in not only his team's success since he has been HC, but also what he did with Manning as a QB coach.

Come on now Skinnz, don't take me so literally.......but I see an ounce of doubt creep in now.....just an ounce.....

  16. Your underestimating the importance of coaching in this league.

Question. Did you think Tony Dungy was a good coach?

He was OK, but not my cup of tea. Better than Caldwell though. Without playing up to your New England pride, I'd suggest the Colts would have been the Dynasty of the 2000's, not the Patriots, if we had BB as our coach from 1998.....and no, I can't prove that.

  17. Now Caldwell gets all the kudos for Manning's brilliance. It's normally Polian. Whilst I fully respect Coffee / JSkinnz / Chad etc., this is all smoke and mirrors. We ALL know a reputible coach would take the Colts further. Hiding behind Manning's right arm to excuse Caldwell's record is a load of baloney. ANd I know you know it, but you are just not admitting it, because you think being loyal to the management is the right thing to do. It's not. It's foolish.

  18. One of the things I find funny is the people who talk about him being a bad coach, cite him giving up on a perfect season as one of the reasons he's a bad coach. The obvious question would be, "how can a bad coach have his team in position for a perfect season?" To which the reply is he inherited a SB team and it's because of Manning.

I don't like Caldwell as our coach. I thought his decision to pull the starters was disgusting, and I don't respect him for it. Whether he is a good coach, a bad coach or an indifferent coach is moot.

But then again, I don't like Bill either.

  19. You know what the perfect season thing was a product of Polian AND Caldwell. Again resting the starters did not start with Polian, as when they had Mora as a head coach when they had a chance to sit there starters vs. the Bills they played the starters. Even keeping them in the game when it was well out of reach up till Bennett getting hurt. It was Dungy who brought resting the staters here. It was then Dungy who trained Caldwell. Polian did what a good GM should do, he supported his head coach's choice. What I will agree with is that Polian's ego is what caused the PR nightmare after the fact.

Now you are just making a lot assumpetions with the rest. Show one peace of proof that you have that it was Polian who made Caldwell pull the starters? Caldwell had to agree with the plan because it was him who made the call to take them out in the game. If he didn't they wouldn't have come out. What was Polian going to do fire a 15-0 coach on the brink of the playoffs? Not going to happen or Irsay would have shown him the door. Sorry Caldwell was on board with the call.

You are blameing Polian for a lot of Caldwell's calls. Sounds like the guy you should be mad at is Caldwell.

    Polian hired Caldwell. Enough said.
