Really nice variety in minshews passes her. He hit from all levels.

I love what Shane has done with minshew.  When he first took over after the AR injury, he was jittery in the pocket and never looked down field.  Now, he’s done a complete 180.  Hats off to Shane for the coaching and minshew for putting in the work.

Ebukam, another 49er steal.  Buck was the first.  Remember when we got buck, people didn’t think he was good enough for the 2nd we gave them.  Ebukam has been a very good signing.

happy for dayo also!  Hoping that he turns into an every down defensive end.  But that would mean less snaps for qwitty :(

Luck was coming off a year of surgery.

    Brissett had never started.

Rivers was coming off a very down year, so down, the Colts might’ve been the only team interested.   Rebounded to have a very good year even when iractice was limited by Covid.

Same with Wentz.  Came off a down year.   Not clear anyone else was interested.   Again, rebounded sharply to have a very good year until the final two games.   Had such a good year, Ballard was able to trade him for a good haul of picks.

    Same with Ryan.

If that doesn’t work for you, fine.   But I think you’ve narrowed your definition to help your argument.

No, I didn’t narrow it, I just explained what I think a qb whisperer is.  Similar to a dog whisperer, or any whisperer.  It means you can take almost any situation and turn it into something.

let’s just use a dog whisperer as an example (change the variables).  If said whisperer could handle mature dogs but couldn’t handle younger dogs and puppies, would you give said person the dog whisperer title?  Probably not.  So it shouldn’t be any different when we’re using the whisperer title for qbs.

Once again, qb whisperer to me means that said coach can develop any kind of qb and get the best out of them.  I mean, haven’t multiple posters on this thread said that Reich has a “type” when it comes to qb?  Versus Shane who had a mobile running qb with a cannon arm looking productive and now minshew who is the total opposite.

I haven’t followed Reich outside of his Indy and panthers seasons so if you can provide me with something prior to those that shows his qb whispering skills then I’d change my opinion.  But sorry, what you’re essentially telling me is that reichs system is qb friendly, which is not calling Reich a qb whisperer.

I think Brents' play has been spotty all season. I like him as a prospect, but he's mistake prone and penalty prone, and I think that continues until he improves his technique.

Honestly, he just need to play more.  He’s missed a lot of time this year and as a rookie you need the experience, especially at one of the hardest positions in the game.  availability is his number one problem right now.

  5. GOOD

Minshew:  good safe from him.  Didn’t force anything and protected the ball.  3 touchdowns on the day and a 128.3 rating.  That’s all we need him to do.

Pittman:  he was KILLING them before the hit knocked them out. 4 recs 78yds, WR1 play right there.  Would’ve went for more.  Hope he gets out of the protocol quickly.

Sermon and Goodson:  almost 200yds on the ground.  Way to take it to them.  Next man up!

Montgomery: signed off the practice squad this week and grabs his first touchdown.  Even though he dropped the first one, he redeemed himself

Defense:  don’t like the prevent defense we play when we’re ahead but when you hood the opposing team to 216, I can’t complain at all.  Great job!

Could say some more but don’t want to make this too long.

    BAD

Matt Gay:  not really that bad, but if we’re paying you a lot of money to do one job, then you gotta be 100%.

Punt Team:  bad blocking on that blocked punt.

Think that’s all I have for bad.  Anything else I’d be nitpicking.  Great all around win.  Put up 30 and held the opposing team to less than 300 yards.  8-6!

Not the QB whisperer people have painted him to be?

Frank got the best year out of an injured Andrew Luck.

Got a good year out of Brissett until he got hurt.

Got a very good year out of Philip Rivers in a year limited due to Covid.

Got a very good year out of Carson Wentz until the last two weeks when a wave of Covid hit Wentz and other top players.

Got a decent half-season out of Matt Ryan.  The problem with last year’s team was the terrible OL.

Not sure your view of Reich holds up to facts.

getting a good year out of already established qbs is not what I envision when I read “qb whisperer”

a qb whisperer to me is what Shane is doing.  No matter what style qb you give him, he’ll make something out of it.  developing that qb and making that player play to their strengths and not forcing them to do something else

Taking an already established qb and putting him in your system is exactly what that is.

Read the whole thing, that was very revealing. One unnamed player said it's not Reich's style to be overly critical of any player or position group. Some said he was more openly calling out Young's mistakes early in the season, and then pulled back as the season progressed, to protect Young's confidence. Nothing there seems surprising...

Also, in this whole thing, with tons of named and unnamed sources, nothing about the owner forcing the QB pick.

I think it's interesting that Tepper pushed Reich to hire from outside his inner circle, and how that led to some mismatched ideologies on the coaching staff. Trying to incorporate some of the Rams stuff that Thomas Brown was bringing into Reich's system didn't go well. There were competing priorities with helping Young get up to speed, and how much focus should be on him operating the offense as a rookie, vs working on his fundamentals and footwork right away. They started drilling him on footwork a few weeks ago...

Not to pat myself on the back (okay, just a little), I said in my pre-draft write up that Young had an inconsistent drop back, sometimes lacking urgency in his footwork, and I wondered if it would be an issue. That's something that was a point of contention among the staff. And Tepper even told Reich to fix Young's footwork. It's kind of ironic to me that two years ago, Reich was expected to be the cure for Wentz's issues with fundamentals -- and I think some of those technique issues improved with Wentz from 2020 to 2021 -- and two years later, he found himself in a mess with a young QB who has decent technique but needed some minor refinements. And even though I think Tepper is way out of his lane on some of this stuff, it's kind of surprising that the owner should need to tell the HC that the QB needs to work on his footwork. Kind of like it was surprising that owner had to prompt Reich to bench Matt Ryan last year.

And I agree with DJ Chark -- everything isn't fixed just because Reich is gone.

so basically, as I’ve said before, Reich isn’t the qb whisperer people have painted him out to be.

regarding tepper, why hire a HC you can’t even trust to hire his own staff?  Maybe he saw what happened in Indy and didn’t want a repeat?  Idk, but that makes no sense.

  8. I think defenses have finally caught up to offenses and the rules that tailor to them.  Pass rushes have become faster and stronger.  DBs have become more athletic and smart.

and it’s not just mobile qbs.  It’s QBs period.  The price tag for OL and backup qbs will shoot up in the future if this continues to be a thing.

  9. Watching that chargers game makes me appreciate Shane so much more.  Chargers lose their qb, they roll over.  We lose our qb, we’re in the playoff hunt.  Staley should’ve BEEN fired.  They’ve wasted Herbert’s early years and that team is getting old quick.

oh well, time to call them about Joey bosa lol

Looking at how teams play the Colts they pay way more attention to Pittman than they do Pierce.  The announcers even said today the Bengals focused on trying to take away easy catches for Pittman (still had 8 for 95 yards).

Because Pittman is the only consistent option.  If Pierce was consistently the Pierce we saw vs Tennessee he would definitely get more attention, but the reality is he’s not.  My original reply was in response to a question asking is 3 recs 100yds better than 11 recs 100 yds.

Also, Minshew is who he is.   Minshew is going to throw it within 10yds 9 times out of

    10.  Also, minshew cant extend the play.  It takes Pierce more time to run down field than it does for Pittman to run his short route.  Send pressure, minshew gets happy feet and doesn’t look down field.  That’s the difference between minshew and AR.  AR will avoid the rush and keep his eyes downfield.

Also, Pittman got the majority of his yards when the game was over.  He was 5 for 40yds (under 10yds/rec) before the bengals started playing off.

So if I'm getting this right 3 catches for 100 yards and a td and 2 first downs is better 11 catches  for 100 yards a td and 7 first downs?  What kind of nonsense math is that?

Which one is the defense going to pay more attention to?  Who’s going to command a corner and a safety overtop to keep them contained?

    Read my comment above.

So by your logic,  are you saying if Pierce was consistent with these types of games,  he'd be considered a number 1?

Easily.  If Pierce did that consistently, he’s not only beating his man, he’s beating the entire defense.  The defense would have to pay so much attention to him which would open up the offense even more.  That is the problem with this offense.  We don’t have a consistent deep threat.

What Pittman does is productive, but like others have said it’s inefficient.  Pittman gets his yards by a thousand cuts, and defenses are clearly ok with it.  Look at it like this, we’re helping the defense out by shortening the field for them 33% of the offensive plays.  If we throw 30 times, and we can bet 10 of those throws are going to Pittman who isn’t going to run his route more than 10 yds down the field, then as a defense I can bring everyone up and play both the run AND pass without worrying about getting beat deep.  All I need to do is put a safety and corner on Pierce, put a corner on Pittman and let him Play off of him, and make sure my

linebackers are playing the middle for downs and the tight ends.  Or I could blitz, let one of the safeties defend the middle and let a linebacker go after the quarterback.

Basically, to beat the colts, you just have to stop the run.  That’s it.  You stop us from running the ball and your chances of beating us increase dramatically.  Let Pittman get his short yardage catches on first or second down, tighten up on third and send pressure because chances are we aren’t going deep.

  13. This is going to be a short one because there really isn’t much to write about:

    Good

MPJ:  another game where he shows his ability to be an alpha WR1.  8 catches for 95yds is a good stat line.  Still don’t like the high amount of targets (11).  Hope next year with AR were able to spread the ball around more.  The rest of the receiving core had solid numbers.  But we can’t become the explosive offense I hope we become when one player has almost as many targets as the rest of the receiving core combined.

RHJ:  good job getting that interception.  He has been a solid addition to the team.

    Bad

All 3 phases and coaching:  simply, we just looked bad.  Couldn’t run, couldn’t get to the quarterback, couldn’t tackle.  When we did actually begin to move the ball, either penalties or turnovers killed the drives.  This is easily the worst performance by this team this year.  Hopefully this will wake up the team.  We should come out against a reeling Steelers team and punch them in the mouth.

Diontae Johnson is a good comp for play style and production. But I think he's an outlier. It's well below the value of every other notable WR contract over the last two years, he was a third round pick who signed a year early, and he only signed a two year extension. I didn't think his contract made sense at the time he signed it, it seemed like a hometown discount, and now I think he fleeced the Steelers.

We can't just disregard his contract because I think it's weird, but what makes him a better comp than Keenan Allen?

    agreed on diontae.

as far as Keenan, feel like Keenan does more.  Not saying MPJ can’t do what Keenan does, but doesn’t.  As far as going deeper.  I wouldn’t mind giving MPJ $20mill either.  But as I stated above, I would offer him $22mill because that’s what I think he’s going to get.

  15. 4 hours ago, Superman said:

How much of this is a psychological desire to see the number be less than $20m/year?

Gotta read above, I said I’d offer him $22million but personally I wouldn’t give him more than $19million.  It’s negotiations.  I wouldn’t start at $19million because I know he’s going to garner higher than that, that’s just my personal opinion.

now, why do I think he’s a $19milllion WR?  Because looking at the salaries for other receivers that’s where he fits.

Diontae Johnson gets $18.5.  Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, Chris Godwin and a couple others get $20million.  Deebo Samuel and the other elites are $23million and up.

if you think he’s with the $23million and up crew (deebo, Tyreek, JJ, etc.) then I think that’s overvaluing him.  I said $19million because there are receivers in the $20s that affect all of the field while Pittman for majority of his career hasn’t, but I do think he’s better than the $18mill and below players.

but of course, that’s if he was being signed right now.  We don’t know what the tv deals and increased cap will garner him.

I think we still need an edge rusher.  Samson is good, Kwity is good at setting the edge.   We get a lot of sacks mainly due to Buck.

But it sure would be nice to have a guy that defenses have to scheme for when he's out there.  It also takes their TE out of play a lot.

I was very disappointed we didn't go after the two Washington players.  Yes, he would have been a rental and expensive to keep.  But if he works out, it's well worth it.

I wouldn’t want sweat.  If we’re going to spend capital then go for the best.  Chase would’ve costed us picks and the chance of losing him for nothing since he made it known he wanted to test FA.  I’d rather give him a big offer in FA than to trade for him, lose picks, and best case scenario still have to spend money if he chooses to resign.

  17. Once he spends some money in free agency on prime proven talent, then I will change my opinion.  For now, he’s a good GM that could be a Great GM.

not saying go out and win the FA Trophy, but if there’s a player out there who can come in and immediately make difference and put this team on another level (ex. Chase young), then throw him an offer that won’t get easily outbidded.

Right now... the Texans look scary going forward considering how well CJ Stroud has played.

    B. Young might be the Ryan Leaf of this draft, while Anthony Richardson is one huge question mark 😕

I fear that the Texans have a super star in the making in CJ Stroud and right now, he's clearly the best QB in the AFC South.

Jennifer Lawrence is second, and AR 3rd.

But damn he looks good and with DeMeco Ryans as their coach and how well he's done it so far, the Texans are headed to a super bowl within the next 3-5 years IF they can continue to improve and strengthen their roster.

Furthermore the Texans are in a great position, as they have a rookie QB and going into 2024 they have a staggering $85 million dollars in cap space, which could catapult them into a true contender for a super bowl.

The Colts will have $89 million dollars in cap space in 2024, but with Ryan Grigson... sorry I mean Chris Ballard as the GM, I don't think we will spend big money in free agency and we have a ton of needs that has to be fixed if we want to challenge the  texans next season.

Texans are definitely scary.  I think them along with the jags, the afc south will be a tough division for the next 10 years.  Given the GMs do a good job of building their teams.

i think Bryce will be ok.  He does not have the support he needs on a talent and coaching level, and maybe owner level.  Just like any qb, he needs a system that will fit him.  Since he’s small, RPOs and getting him to use his legs and move the pocket (ex. Russel Wilson) would work best.  But he had Reich as a HC and they did none of that.  And I think from AR showed in his few games he’s no longer a question mark, at least regarding talent.  His question would be his health due to his play style.  But I think Shane will get him right.

Regarding Stroud vs AR, I think it’s 1a 1b.  If they both reach their ceilings, they will both be productive.  Strouds throwing and ARs playmaking I feel will cancel each other out.  It will come down to which team is better at putting talent around their QB.

Hopefully now that we have our QB, Ballard will use the capital we have to get AR more help.  And honestly, it’s doable.  We’re the second youngest team in the league so we don’t have that much money tied up.  Resign key players like Moore and Pittman, abuse the rest to try and fill prime positions of need like WR and DE, and then use the draft to try and grab more starters and continue to fill out our depth.

i will say, after many years of being looked down upon, the afc south will be entertaining for a while.  This year has been a good preview.  And that’s with one of the young stars out and the other only playing 6 games.
