Over half the viewership of the NFL lives in the Eastern Timezone.  10 pm means a huge drop in viewership, granted its preseason but that makes it even worse.

    yeah

You hit the nail on the head - preseason games are tailored towards the local time zone and fans, not national audience (unless it is one of the nationally televised games). A 7 PST start means more people in the local market watching and attending without leaving work early, etc. You can disagree but it is standard practice in the preseason. I'm in the minority, living in Oregon, but that start time means I'll actually be able to watch it live without messing with my usual schedule.

some of my years were off, but i double checked and the titans were never better than 7-9 in lucks first three years, and they had a 2-14 in there.  the jags won 8 games in three years, thats a pretty weak division

Again, I’ll start by saying I agree the AFCS wasn’t strong from 2012-14. That said, aside from the Pats, only 1 team in the AFCE had a winning record during that time-the Bills went 9-7 in 14. The best finish aside from that was 8-8. Neither division was strong and the Pats were a better team than the Colts over that span.

Point is, a weak division isn’t the main argument against a team being good or bad. Based on roster, Luck leading the Colts to multiple playoff wins in that period speaks to his potential. We’ll see how he looks this year. I’m cautiously optimistic.

we have a lot more question marks than Tennessee or Jacksonville.

the texans are like us and full of question marks too, but if watson and watt are healthy then they are more talented than the colts.

I generally agree with your point that the division is more competitive now than it was Luck's first three years. Although both the Titans and Texans were competitive in two of the three years - it was really just the Jags who were terrible. That said, the Titans have a new, very young and inexperienced HC and OC, and will be implementing a completely different offensive system. I'd say that is a pretty big question mark coming into this year.

I think you have the schedule slightly off...

What I read and heard is...   throw on Mon/Tue/Wed...      take Thursday off and then throw Friday.   And that's it for the week.

Mon-Wed equals the Wed-Fri of a normal week.   And the Friday equals the Sunday.

So....   throw 4 days a week...   rest 3 days a week.     Just like a normal NFL week during the season.    That was my takeaway.

That was my interpretation as well.

Yes, that is what he laid out. He also stated that the Friday/Sunday workout is/will be more of a full go like a game would be, with the other three days seeming to be lighter/more of a pitch count. I took away that we should expect lighter practice reps during the actual season (i.e., unlike in 2015 that isn't a bad sign unless he obviously has a setback or re-injures it).

It was reported that during today's practice, he made longer throws, as well as some throws with a full size football. Color me more optimistic about the situation than I have been in a looooong time.

No way I would pay him $14 million per year. He had 112 receptions last year and 987 yards receiving. That is not a playmaking WR. Jack Doyle has a $5.6 million cap hit in 2018 and can give the Colts those numbers with Luck at QB...that's not a knock on Doyle; it is a knock on Landry.

I am sure Vinny knows what he is getting himself in to. This is a young mans game. They all get cut... eventually.

If you do sign him, then check off the position and bring in a camp leg. This situation is not like the punter situation last year, which is a great example of signing a vet, bringing in competition, and going with the best player. If there is any doubt in your mind that Vinny is the guy, you just don't sign him to a one year deal. Simple as that. Vinny isn't coming back to a 4-12 team to be in an off season/preseason kicking competition.

I disagree completely. I am actually not sure I could disagree with you more. The only thing I agree with you about is that I think it's a good idea to bring Vinny back.

Vinny is not signing a blockbuster deal and he is at the age where he could get cut by a young up-and-coming kicker. It happens. This is the NFL.

I am not saying Vinny will get cut. However, to think he will not have serious competition during this off-season is completely wrong.

Okay. We can agree to disagree. If I were running the Colts and wanted a kicker competition, last thing I would do is sign back Vinny. You don't bring a 20+ year vet who is arguably the GOAT at his position and less than a season away from breaking an all time record to burn up his leg in a preseason kicking competition with a UDFA.

How does this thread only have about 5 replies.

    This was news hours ago.

Anyway, I was hoping we would bring Vinny back on a one-year contract. Bring in a young guy during camp and have an honest competition.

If we sign back Vinny there is no honest competition during training camp; it is Vinny's job barring injury. I'd love to bring him back for at least one more year...

Yea I would have to agree.

Here's the rumor mill (JMV, Kravitz, etc.) if I am remembering correctly. Irsay pursued Manning and Gruden last off season. PM would be brought in as team president, which basically means he steps into Irsay's role. Hierarchy would be team pres, GM, HC. PM didn't come through because they could not agree on partial ownership as part of this role. JMV was saying a few weeks ago that Irsay is going to make another run at PM this off season. Who knows if there is anything to any of this...Manning, Ballard, a new HC, and healthy Luck would sure give some hope to a situation where the further along we get the more I'm starting to feel like bad management will be the biggest factor in Luck never reaching his potential. I have always been an Irsay supporter but I must say I am starting to wonder if it is time for him to take a hands off approach.

  10. @CanuckColtsFanI live in down in Portland and was planning on going, but with no Luck, tickets being super expensive, and it being a SNF game, I opted to watch it on my couch.

Seahawks fans are rowdy but not dangerous. Wear your jersey and prepare to hear lots of smack talk. It is a great stadium to see a game. If you like to party, there are ample bars very close to the stadium that are crazy on game day. Enjoy, and cheers to the Colts making me wish I forked up the cash to go!

Some people are ready way too much into this I think.  I don't think this has anything to do with Green's ability at safety, I doubt if they are looking at this as a permanent move.  I bet they are looking at this as how are they going to trim their roster.  Much like Butler last year, they knew they could move Butler into the safety position in an emergency situation, so that was one less safety they needed to keep on the roster  If they feel Green can play the CB position in an emergency, that is one less CB they need to keep on the roster and it will help them with the 45 player game day roster.

Like someone else stated in this thread, preseason, even more specifically, before the first cut down date is when teams should try things like this.

Thanks for the logical take on the situation.

  12. The main knock on TY to this point in his career is TD's. Unless that changes, he won't even sniff the Hall.

For comparison, AJ Green, in only 8 more games (one more season) with worse QB play, has 481 receptions; 7,135 yards; 83 yards/game; and 49 TDs. In today's NFL, that is a HOF pace.

That all said, I love me some TY and he's a great player in his own right.

Compared to someone like me, he could run an NFL offense better, compared to most at the same level as him, he is a terrible coordinator. That's what I meant. It doesn't mean too much when you are one of the worst of the best in a winner take all sport. Unless you are just doing it for a payday.

I do think the offense could stand some changes, but Chud is not one of the worst OCs in the NFL. He's middle of the pack-ish...pretty much like Pagano. If things don't look smoother this year, I'll join you with my pitchfork.

  14. 27 minutes ago, Jared Cisneros said:

Pagano actually benefits our defense a bit, even though it is the weaker unit. The problem is that him and Chud know little to nothing about running an NFL offense, and it's killing us. Luck isn't bad, Hilton isn't bad, and neither is our offense. Just the people running it have little to no knowledge of what they are doing. Even just a better O-Coordinator would be a huge difference if Pagano didn't interfere.

Come on now. You can say you don't like his offensive system/philosophy, but to say he knows little or nothing about running a NFL offense is just sensationalism devoid of factual evidence and reality. Chud has coached offense since 1996. He has coached offense in the NFL since 2004--that's 13 NFL seasons. Someone who has been employed for 13 seasons knows a lot about running NFL offenses.

  15. Per PFF 10 sleeper free agents (https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-10-sleeper-free-agents-who-could-bring-surprise-upside)/:

    8. Gerald Hodges, LB

Players with a very small sample size of play are some of the riskiest free agents around, but they can also provide major upgrades for minor investments if the sample size is small enough to keep them under the radar of most teams. Gerald Hodges played 584 snaps for the 49ers this past season. It was actually his third straight season with between 500 and 600 snaps, but was the first in which he put it all together instead of just flashing one facet of his game. Hodges became a major factor in the run game for the 49ers, notched three sacks and nine total pressures on the blitz, and improved his play in coverage – dropping his passer rating allowed by more than 25 points over his previous career high. Hodges only really has one season of quality play to his name, but that season points to significant upside if a team can replicate that form.

Edit, PFF also had him 3 in FA LBs (https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-top-10-linebackers-set-to-hit-free-agency/):

    3. Gerald Hodges, San Francisco 49ers (82.4)

Acquired by the 49ers in a trade with the Vikings, Hodges struggled in his first year with the new team but took a big step in 2016. Hodges has graded well in run defense in his career and has posted solid grades the past two seasons rushing the passer when asked to do so. The concern for the former Penn State Nittany Lion are his inconsistencies in coverage, which will limit his ceiling. While he showed improvement in that area — yielding a career low 87.3 passer rating when targeted — he was also targeted a career-low 24 times in 2016 while still allowing 2 touchdowns.

He was asked whether he's better at evaluating offensive or defensive players, and he said he definitely identifies with the defensive side, since he was a defensive coach. He said that made him a good fit with Reid in KC, who has an offensive background. (Even Dorsey, while he played as a LB, he's worked closely with a lot of offensive minded coaches.)

That was my biggest nugget. It will be interested to see who he brings in to replace Raye because you have to assume he will be leaning on him for offensive players. I wonder how much input the offensive staff had/will have in decision making too.
