Because I don’t think that was a big deal.  They were down to :45 seconds and still had what another 15 to 20 yards to go even if they did get it.  Time was starting to become a little bit of a factor even with Taylor going out of bounds.

it is a big deal. He was pushed out of bounds on 1st and 10 and 2nd and 8. Had he gotten an extra half yard on those plays, that 4th down doesn’t even happen…

so yes, it does matter.. and it might be why he didn’t get the ball on 4th and 1.

Something is wrong when the HC likes the play that takes the only guy who has had success off the field.

he was stuffed twice on that drive for no gain, and barely got a yard on 3rd and 2. They came out up tight and in man coverage.

I get the concept. I do. I was frustrated afterwards that we didn’t live and die by JT, and even posted on the forum. It might have even been at the beginning of the thread. But then to listen to Steichen and minshew speak on the playcall, and knowing the facts, which is that it was a great call and it was open and it was dropped by a guy they say has executed in practice time and time again… I cannot bring myself to be angry at it.

because for me, at the end of the day as I’ve stated here- we were 1-11 on third down, and sub 150 passing. Minshew wasn’t good enough to win this game. JT made some questionable decisions running out of bounds the last few plays instead of sticking his nose in it and cutting it in. They didn’t make the plays to win. It’s never about one play, especially when it’s drawn up to do exactly what it’s supposed to- get the ball to a pass catcher. It shouldn’t matter who it is. The open guy is the answer. Catch the ball.

So basically, he said the plan was to sneak him open because nobody thought he'd be thrown the ball? But JT would have been covered since he's JT? Got to think about that. Either he's a genius (because the guy was wide open) or he out thought himself. Interesting though.

no- he said they called the timeout because they saw them in man coverage.

they called the play- which was Goodson in the flat with Pitt picking.

I said it wouldn’t work Jt.

he didn’t outthink himself. He dialed up a play to get the ball to an open pass catcher and it was dropped. Its not hard

Did it get the first down?  Then no it didn’t.  You might have liked play call but that alone doesn’t mean it worked because execution did not.

play call and execution are not mutually exclusive. Andy Reid has dialed up plenty of perfect play calls- and executed perfectly by his star qb only to be dropped by kadarius toney. They aren’t failed play calls. They are drops by a professional football player.

When did I say that?  Oh wait I didn’t.  I just said you can’t ignore that the Colts failed to convert on 4th and 1 on their last offensive drive and act like that’s not why they lost the game.  In fact I said it wasn’t the only reason they lost.

lol. Please re-read what you just wrote.

He most definitely had a big drop in the Atlanta game.

no game is lost on a single play there are always things you can back and go if this happened or that happened it would have different but trying to pretend that you didn’t lose because you failed to convert 4th and 1 on your last position is just flat nonsense.

pretending that a wide open dropped pass was a bad play call by the coach and the reason we lost versus the 10 failed third down conversions is also nonsense.

Steichen said that? That if JT was in the game, he wouldn't have been open?

no he said that Goodson was the pass catcher in that specific play they had practiced. They wouldn’t have ran that play with JT, and had they done so, he would have been keyed on, putting the decision even more in Minshew’s hands… the play was there and it was dropped. Hindsight is funny. Everyone is a genius with it.

It’s using a rookie off the practice squad who has had drop issues and hadn’t played all night

now you are just making stuff up to try and justify your point. What drop issues are you talking about? 7 targets 6 receptions this year.

    4 minutes ago, GoColts8818 said:

And I think it was mistake to view it that way, that’s why I have an issue with Shane.  Also, it was the drive to try to win or lose the game and the fourth down call so yes it was why they lost the game.  Was it the only reason they lost?  No it wasn’t but to say it’s not why they lost is simply incorrect.  Lastly, I don’t have to get over it just because you don’t like that I don’t agree with the coach.

if it wasn’t the only reason they lost then it can’t be why they lost. That’s very contradicting. Has he made the catch, they still have to score the touchdown and kick the extra point/keep them from scoring again. It’s not why they lost, but it was the end of the game.

Disagree for the same reasons I’ve stated in this thread, play calls also include personal.

    Did you watch the pressers?

the playcall was based on personnel. They viewed Goodson as the pass catching back and that play as the one that would be open. Had JT been out there, it’s not likely open. They saw man coverage, had the play and it was dropped by a guy that catches it everyday in practice. Get over it. It wasn’t the reason we didn’t win this game.

To be fair to Minshew, that throw to Mo Allie Cox in the first half was a dart, a big man like MAC should have been able to clamp it down and not let the pass be broken up. Our pass catchers didn't make tough contested catches in man coverage as much and the Texans dared us to, it felt like the entire first half.

there were a few big drops, for sure. But more bad than good from Minshew in my eyes. Can’t imagine I’m alone in that. Several throws that didn’t even have a chance.

Behind every great call is great execution. But the bottom line was, that 4th & 1 play wasn't the main reason we lost. We couldn't control the line of scrimmage in the first half, and pass effectively in the first half to keep it close enough and put pressure on the Texans, overall.

    1-11 on third down.

One or two plays dominate the conversation of a ball game. But never about the 10 failed third down plays…

He's a professional football player. There's nothing wrong with that play call or the personnel. It's not "too cute," it's a great call.

Agreed. I  was angry about it at first. But then I calmed down and came to my senses. Coaches put players in position to make plays. They can’t catch the ball for them. They say Goodson is the best pass catching back, and with JT’s thumb injury, he likely is. the ball was thrown behind him a bit, and he dropped it. His reaction to reporters in the locker room saying he feels like a failure speaks to the situation. The play was there, the playmaking was not.

They won’t though.. Ballard has proven that every single year.

Idk why people expect him to change

he’s not had a legit chance in free agency since 2019 offseason. Every single year since then he has had uncertainly at qb. Every single year. This is the first year they know what they are doing and qb isn’t part of the free agency. Hard to get guys to want to come to Indianapolis when you don’t have the qb figured out.

I think this year will be different. I could even see Irsay putting the pressure on like he did Grigson. Time to put up or shut up. This could he Ballard’s last chance at an offseason, and he needs to view it as such. Time to make some moves.

Good question.  If that cornerback is THAT good I’d say take him.  If not, we need to get a WR1 and that’s very doable at 17 in this draft.   This draft is deep at WR and now that we’re not making the playoffs, we are sure to be able to grab a highly graded WR.  Someone like Odunze or Troy Franklin should be available at 17.

Zero chance odunze falls to us.

some view him as a better prospect than Harrison. (I don’t) but that’s how highly he is regarded by some. Monday night will be a huge chance for him to elevate his stock

Exactly trust the guys who brought you to the dance.  Shane got too cute and out coached himself and paid for it.

I don’t disagree on trusting your key players. But they were keying hard on the run. They had just stuffed the 3rd down play. The playcall was there, and it was anything but cute. He says (and minshew says in his presser too, for what it’s worth) that the play to Goodson, who they viewed as their pass catching back, was practiced “a million times” according to minshew. It was anything but cute. It was a simple throw out of the backfield.

We couldn’t throw the ball.  We couldn’t catch the ball.  Maybe a couple of explosive plays on offense outside of JT run.  This game is not close if JT doesn’t have the game he had.

We need playmakers on offense.  Our first pick needs to be a playmaking WR.  Second pick needs to be a FS because someone has to replace Rodney Thomas.

With that said, this season was a success and I’m very excited for next year.

what if our draft position has a playmaking cornerback for the taking? Are  you still reaching for a receiver that isn’t as as high on the draft board?

I don’t disagree with you on the needs, I’m just curious.

Well Colts have the 17th pick would be interesting where they go. This team needs secondary and play makers on offense. Hopefully we move on from Big Mo he has an  awful 20 yard drop and just disappears for most games.

I am heavy on the thought that this team would be better served having a top tier tight end and the same receiving core with AR than with the same tight end group and adding weapons at receiver. This receiving core has had no consistency or performance at qb. The tight end group has no premier pass catchers with or without qb performance.

Yeah, he just can't be on the team next season. Possibly the worst tackler I've ever seen and not just based on that one play - he's had multiple terrible tackles this season.

    Seriously sad tackling efforts.

for a team that priorities receivers that block well and corners that tackle well, he has no business on the roster. Zero.

    Emotional Overreaction!!! Hindsight 20/20.

The pass to Dan Klecko by Peyton, pass to David Tyree by Eli, pass to Bryan Fletcher by Peyton, there are always unsung heroes. They just did not execute. You think Steichen would have run that play if they didn't practice it a LOT.

Nah, I disagree here. Marshawn Lynch on the 1 yard line in a SB says the same thing but that was a play the Seahawks ran just 2 times the entire season but Belichick was ready for it and Malcolm Butler made a great play. Plus the Patriots were in jumbo formation and had done very well in those formations against short yardage situations.

So, my point is, you can go re-visit play calling from a different angles but players play and execute it and when they do, it doesn't matter who made the play. Go for a 57 yard FG, kicker doesn't make it, coach gets the blame, and the kicker makes it, the kicker gets the credit. You have a run up the gut on 4th & 1 that gets stuffed, people will bring Frank Reich comparisons.

It was a good play call but it was terrible execution with a less than ideal throw from Minshew and a botched catch by Goodson, that is all I see there is to it.

I had a coach that said that the very best that coaches can do is put you in best position to make plays, but they couldn’t make them for you.

 I am not buying the best play an offensive genius could come up with on the season on the line was a throw from your backup QB to your practice squad running back.  With the season on the line you need to trust your best players.  Look at what the Texans did with Stroud and Collins for example.  They didn’t shy away from them because they knew the Colts would be expecting it they dared them to stop it and the Colts failed.  I don’t know how many times teams knew Harrison, Wayne, Clark, or Hilton was getting the ball and couldn’t stop it.  Shane should have trusted his stars in that situation.  Instead he out coached himself which he’s done multiple times this season.

Again, I like Shane overall and there is denying the positive impact his coaching had on this team this season but he has things to work on.  I hope he does.

I look at it from two perspectives. His and mine. I feel the same way you do. You live and die by your key players. But from his perspective, they ran that play in practice successfully, and it was the right play- it just didn’t translate from the practice field. Moment was too big and it was dropped. He sounds convicted in the decision. They got the look. Took the timeout. It was there and hit him open in the hands. had he caught it, we still had 10 or more yards to go to score. It wasn’t like that play was going to win us the game. It just lost it.

He’s going to learn and grow from this season. He’ll be his hardest critic, without any doubt in my mind. He’s a young rookie coach, playing with a mediocre qb.

  23. 2 minutes ago, chad72 said:

Yeah, that is why people need to maintain perspective. Minshew's backup QB tendencies showed up on and off, and unfortunately this time at an inopportune moment, IMO. So he exceeds the bar of expectations sometimes but also lowers the bar, something you have to live with as a backup QB but an outstanding one for us.

strong perspective here… we overachieved with Minshew. No one saw a winning season in the cards, and especially not after a promising Richardson went down.
