Kent Sterling made a good point in the video I posted earlier. He mentions how everyone knew, going into the game, Nico Collins was the only viable threat Houston had on offense. Sterling mentions how Bill Belichick would try to not allow a teams best player to beat them. Yet, Bradley seems to never make any adjustments to limit these lone players from single handedly destroying us.

The week before, vs the Raiders, it was a similar situation with Davante Adams. And I suppose I could go on and on.

To me, it's more than just Gus' zone scheme and personnel that needs to be considered in his retention.

I thought of Bill during the game. How many times did he cover TY Hilton or Marvin Harrison in tight man with a safety shadowing over the top all game long? The video of him telling Chad ocho cinco to just not worry about playing because they were double covering him all game. Make the 2nd option and down the line beat you.

Yes…. But Ballard and Irsay will be heavily involved.   Their voices are the most important.   They give Bluem parameters so he knows what the Colts will and won’t do.

Of course. Ultimately Ballard's going to be the one with the decision. It doesn't appear that Irsay is super involved in overruling him on contracts and coaches. Even with trading up to draft Taylor in 2020, it was Irsay that pushed him to do, but it was just a nudge "if you want him, just do it."

Bluem does the dirty work and has more knowledge of the capspace and the contracts/market for players than anyone in the building, without any doubt. It's not his call to put the contracts in front of players and to manage the roster. It's his job to do the dirty work and have the knowledge at hand so that Ballard and company can decide what is best.

In the "with the first pick series" that they highlighted him, Ballard says along the lines of "I always seek his opinion and how he feels, I might not always agree with him." He doesn't have to agree, but he has to know what he thinks, because it would be insane not to know his breakdown and why he feels the way he does. Bluem is forming his opinions on understanding the organization's roster building and contract principles, but with a higher knowledge of the cap situation, the moves they can make, and the rules that tie it all together. Bluem talks in that bit about how cash is king regarding the makeup of contracts. The cap is just an accounting method, and it will catch up to if you aren't prudent with it, but it's not everything. There's a clip of him on the phone flat out saying "I can tell you right now, I don't think we'd be in that market."

He's legit doing the negotiating and dirty work. He will know the parameters (because he'll be the one presenting the numbers before the negotiations even begin of what he believes they can or cannot afford) and will be in the back and forth discussions of what the market is. What Ballard is really good at is not committing to overpaying right off the bat. He's so convicted in being patient and disciplined in not throwing numbers recklessly, especially if they are unsure. "Go explore and find what your market is." That's his way of saying, we are already confident in the assessment we have and you are way off. But if you can get it, then you better take it.

Ideally I see us drafting a WR, and LBs because we have to resign Pittman and it's better to have one big WR contract, instead of two eating the cap

It’s the only way to go if you are keeping Pittman, which I don’t see them not doing.

If you find an absolute stud in the draft that turns into an elite receiver, you get he and Pittman both for upwards of 4 years, with the option of moving on from Pittman for the younger and more talented guy. I like that concept better than any other alternative that we can reasonably explore.

I think they are gonna throw a ton of money at him if he is available. I dont think Eberflus is HC material and they know that.

He’s going to have tons of money thrown at him from all angles. And I think he’s most certainly gone if they win tonight. Maybe regardless.

And......there are some rumblings if Harbaugh wins the natty he WILL look to return to the NFL and thats the most likely spot.

Chicago makes a lot of sense for him. doesn’t have to move far.

however, so does Los Angeles. It’s not like he is averse to California…

    Just a question

Does Shane need to say Gus is back next year Cause I didn’t read that

Liking continuity maybe is a system like not a coach like

anyway Why didn’t he state yes Gus is back next year

Hence the title “Gus likely staying.”

The “liking continuity” comment came in response to the Gus question… He didn’t say he would be because he knows there is a process to work through. They will evaluate everything before making a decision the day after the season ends.

I dont disagree, I thought Flus was a little more creative than Gus.

    100%.

bears turnovers +7 while ours was -12 from 2021 to 2022.

i think Jim Harbaugh is the only person they will try and replace him with.

I also think Flus was the only coach that held players accountable those years. Which is the new mantra. “Loafs”- loved seeing those film reviews calling out the loafs.

  8. 11 minutes ago, Goatface Killah said:

If the Colts bring in someone else, its likely gonna be another zone guy, so I dont see a change this offseason. Its too hard to change your personnel to a completely different scheme, and that would set us back several years.

I could however, see them bringing Eberflus back if he gets fired, but other than that I expect Gus to be back.

would rather have flus. Bring those turnovers baby.

Agree.  Ballard has tried through the draft.  Kwity, Dayo, Lewis to name a few.  So far no one elite.  He needs to try again this year or go get a proven guy.  I think there is more pressure on him to find one this offseason.  JMO.

the problem for Ballard in that regard is that no player- wouldn’t matter if they were #1 overall, is going to step in and be an elite pass rusher from day one. It takes time, which is what it’s taking. I don’t know that Paye or Dayo is going to be elite, but I think they still have room to grow and take another step into next season. The defensive line took a step this season. Hopefully they’ll do it again next year. And ideally one of those guys turns into a consistent force at the edge.

Buckner is elite. Hands down. So I’m not sure they are as far off as many of us would like to believe. We have to have better secondary play and run defense. You can’t set a franchise sack record, and struggle against the run and pass and blame it all on the defensive line. They all have to work together. Elite pass rushers don’t grow on trees.

This is the defense that Ballard wants:

"It's always about your fronts," Ballard said. "When you have a good quarterback and you can have a good offensive and defensive line, you've got a chance to win. If that defensive line can get after the quarterback, especially with four people -- I mean y'all lived it. Y'all lived it for a long time here in Indy when you had (Dwight) Freeney and (Robert) Mathis coming off the edge when Tony was the head coach. That makes all the difference in the world and covers up for a lot of your mistakes in the back end."

Look, Chris, you can rush 4 people when you have Freeney and Mathis. When you don't, you need to mix it up.

Gus runs the defense that Ballard wants in Indy. Rush 4 people and cover on the back end. Bland. Vanilla. Opposing QBs love it.

You can win rushing Mathis and Freeney when Peyton Manning is on the field and especially has a lead late in the game…

Lol... NAUSEATING?! Yet you STILL read them without simply bypassing? I'm thinking it's something you ate because it's HARD for me to believe that you would continue on a path toward something that made you sick without using the option to avoid it. I'm not forcing you to take in anything I say. Now here's my last post addressed directly to YOU and if you don't respond I applaud because that means you took my advice and if not? Got ya....

Now... another poster had pointed out the job that Caserio had done this season and you basically said the ONLY thing he did was draft Stroud. When I acknowledged his OTHER moves in such a short period you went into a hissy fit about fans loving Caserio and having HATRED towards Ballard. You went on about how Ballard's teams "overachieve" how Polian had Manning and Grigson had Luck only to ruin him. Relax I get it maybe you're in your feelings about what our guy HASN'T accomplished so far now headed toward year EIGHT I believe (inching closer to that decade) but I'm here with you WAITING patiently for the delayed gratification to kick in and I'll be SUPER excited... Trust

I have no idea what you're talking about with Ballard having his hands tied when it came to qb and that he waited patiently since you said earlier that he had makeshift qb after makeshift qb. I guess that's your counter for my point that Ballard played a roll in that carousel of washed or subpar qbs that set the franchise back even further instead of making a move and drafting one like others have. I even gave you a couple of examples.

When I said Ballard needs to change his team build approach I meant like putting more draft value on ELITE players from ELITE schools  (like Q, Pitt, JT) that play top tier competition on a weekly basis VS lower rd picks with high RAS scores from mostly mid level schools or by searching for that diamond in the rough from small schools. More emphasis needs to be put on EXPLOSIVE players at PREMIUM positions. Trade up sometimes to garner top tier talent instead of standing pat or consistently trading DOWN only to garner more LOWER rd picks.

Lastly pay for some top talent in FA here and there (like Buck) to sprinkle in amongst your draft picks instead of constantly searching in the bargain bin for low risk (injured, older, something to prove or young underachievers) high reward types that are motivated to prove something on a one or two year deal and then we let them go..(??) I say AGAIN Ballard has built a SOLID team but his ongoing approach is NOT good enough and his RECORD reflects that. There's NOT enough DIFFERENCE makers on this team period! I believe Ballard has finally gotten the hc / qb combo right and now it's time to find a young innovative defensive guy with an aggressive mindset to replace the current dc. So have a nice day ColtStrong2013 cause I have a feeling you just can't help yourself but I do recommend TUMS for upset stomachs...

I just bypassed that one. It’s the CAPS that’s nauseating… hence the caps on the word

I’m not sure we won’t move up THIS year, but Ballard has never moved up in the first - I think he likes his draft picks too much. I do think the pressure is on to build a roster around AR now and that may force his hand.

The best chance to get one of the top WRs is if Odunze (or Nabers) falls to the 10-14 range.

There are some draft points charts floating around and I think they are fairly reliable - outside the first round. Moving up in the first is hella expensive and there’s generally and extra added price there. I don’t think we’ll move from 15 to 10 by just giving up an extra 2nd rounder for example.

My argument for breaking precedent is that this is the first offseason that the qb position is set before it begins. Since 2019 (and it ended up not being set). He's got his qb. He was a few plays away from a division title. If he isn't aggressive now, he's not going to have many chances. He has said many times that he's not opposed to being aggressive for the right player and fit. He's always used Defforest Buckner as that example. On a smaller level of aggressiveness, they traded up for Jonathan Taylor in the 2nd round to ensure they got him.

I think the time is now to be aggressive with a few big moves in both free agency or via trade prior to the draft. And then possibly making a trade up to ensure you get a playmaker that is added to this roster. Maybe after this year, Steichen feels Pierce isn't a good fit and they can package him. I think he could be appealing to some teams, not as a high value by any means, but if you can upgrade the receiver group by replacing him, then don't delay.

I think for Bradley staying, you don't bring in a high pick at CB. Reason being is that's a new body to learn the system. Bring in another depth piece and a veteran for the corners.

What we will need for his scheme is a smart playmaking safety. Football smart not Yale smart. The safeties have to be smart in this scheme. The while reason Nico got the TD on the opening drive is because Brent's didn't get help up top from Cross like he was supposed to. Alot of big plays could of been avoided if Thomas was in the right spot. Blackmon did play decent so SS is covered IMO.

I'd rather see veteran secondary pieces brought in than through the draft. We have Flowers coming back. We have a decision coming on Blackmon. I like him, but his injuries are piling up and he's going to command a decent amount. We have last year draft pick Scott coming back. I can't see Kenny Moore not being retained.

I feel they'll target free agency for secondary help.

  14. Steichen and Bradley spent four seasons together with the Chargers and know each other well.

“Like I said, I believe in continuity,” Steichen said. “I’ve got a ton of confidence in Gus.”

When he was asked about Bradley’s performance during the season, Steichen sounded confident in Bradley’s performance, given some of the personnel changes he faced.

“He’s done a good job,” Steichen said on New Year’s Day. “Shoot, there’s been moving parts on the defense. The d-line has done a heck of a job, obviously, getting all the sacks that we’ve had — credit to him with the pass rush stuff.”

If Nabers or Odunze fall I think they are the top choices.

Other than that I like Laiatu Latu DE, UCLA at 15. I'm not high on drafting a CB in the first. I'd rather we give our young guys the chance and bring in some veteran talent for competition.

We could trade back a bit and still get Troy Franklin or Brian Thomas in the first as well.

If receiver is what they deem they need, and one of those guys are who they want, why wouldn’t we move up to get one? And what is the line on moving up?

I obviously think it’s highly unlikely we attempt to move up as far as it will take to get Harrison. The only sliver of hope there is that Irsay pushes that. But what is reasonable to move up for the 2nd or 3rd best receiver? Is sitting at 15 and missing out because we hung onto pick or two worth it?

  16. How feasible would Brock Bowers be? Where do we see him landing? Could 3 receivers be taken ahead of him?

I've said on this forum before I think a top talent at tight end and the same receiving core might be better for the offense than rolling the same sad group of tight ends out and improving the receiving core. They all have to function together. Our tight end group isn't cutting it for me. Alie-cox needs to go. Woods is a bust. I like Granson and Mallory, as depth pieces. I would like to see an elite tight end on this roster. The Patriots won super bowls with a lethal Brady-Gronk combo, the Chiefs win with Mahomes-Kelce.

Yes, he ran the ball too.

The topic at hand was an inference that we don't need to look at WRs with pick 15 because "AR will make our WRs better".

Nobody can definitively say that with a sane mind.

I don’t agree nor disagree, because it’s unknown. I don’t see him throwing the ball out of bounds and missing deep ball opportunities like Minshew did last night and so often throughout the season. I think his running threat opens a lot up in the passing game, even just with the ability to get out of the pocket and extend plays. Minshew did that at times, but not near as much as Richardson will. That’s his bread and butter, and the organization knows that. It’s been stated and emphasized.

I think he could elevate the receiving core. I also think it can be improved by addition, so I go back to my initial statement. I neither agree nor disagree.

I’ll say this about receiver at 15- I don’t think it’s good enough. Make a splash and trade up big to get one of the top 2 guys. If we’re that serious about it, why not?

otherwise, best to keep to the process and if that’s receiver at 15 as the best option, by all means. If not, maybe it’s a playmaker in the secondary.

Kinda like Grigson with Luck but guess what? He put nothing else around him besides TY! The o-line stunk, the defense stunk and the coaching staff was subpar! I don't have ANY love for Caserio so lose me on that and the Texans are NOT my team just a division rival which means a side eye will be their way if the Colts need to get past them just like with the Jags and Titans but I will also ACKNOWLEDGE what he's done outside of Stroud in a short period of time. He will probably win EOY as reported by ESPN who also says there's a strong possibility for a clean sweep with Ryan as COY, Stroud as offensive ROY and Anderson as defensive ROY so he can let his accolades speak for themselves.

Bill Polian himself acknowledged that he dropped the ball with Peyton's backup so what's your point?! Painter shouldn't have been drafted just like Ehlinger. You act like Ballard played NO part with these past qbs that were either washed or subpar!! There's no HATE for Ballard cause guess what if he comes out that sub .500 record of mediocrity then that means the Colts are WINNING and challenging for division titles with SB aspirations locked in. Right now Caserio IS king of the division with the team he's built and UNTIL Ballard after ALL these YEARS decides to change his approach or Irsay decides that his RESULTS aren't good enough then I guess we'll simply be that as you say team that "overachieves" while we WATCH the Jags, Titans and Texans pass that division title around.

exactly like Grigson. Who was EOY and ruined the greatest qb prospect/young qb in the history of the game. Andrew Luck won football games, Ryan Grigson did his best to destroy the colts organization.

It’s exactly why I laugh at Caserio getting love. Yes he’s drafted some talent, but CJ Stroud is why they are division champs. Caserio is no king. There’s rumors he could bolt back for the Patriots GM job if it’s available to him. That would be insane of him, but it’s out there.

Ballard’s approach has nothing to do with Nick Caserio getting CJ stroud. He had his hands tied when it came to qb and was patient with it. We didn’t have luxury of a full season of his qb choice to know anything.
