    I think its a square.  :)

Look......to me Josh Jackson and Ronald Jones could have been two players that would have been not only highly rated, players of need, but they also have that star factor.

I just think that the players that were drafted in the second could have been gotten later on.  That is called a reach.

I feel the same about most of Ballards FA signings.  He just seems to be to be very conservative and he thinks he is smarter than he really is.

How would you know how smart he is or what he thinks about his intelligence?

You seem to be a very uninformed casual fan, but I don't know for sure...

Yep. I saw this too. His hands and the way he catches reminded me of Hopkins. Obviously not D Hop, but his relaxed catching ability showed glimpses.

I said the same. Same size. Very similar ability to come back and catch on his back shoulder against coverage like Hopkins.

It's ok to compare 5th round talents to top notch probowlers in terms of size and specific traits. He's obviously not anything close overall. But nice to have on the roster in an area of need.

I think there will be another free agent signing. I’m still watching for Dontrelle Inman who played in SD with our offensive cordinator and last in Chicago.

Absolutely. We might take Brown here next pick... who knows.

Ballard said 10-15 UDFA post draft, but that is about it. I look for a lot of defensive backs and linebackers in that bunch.

Those are silly numbers. Must be very raw with route running and ball skills.

Ball skills are good, but against weak competition which he is obviously knocked for. ESPN had him as best available receiver and NFL had him rated decent as a 5th round pick, mentioning him as a solid 4th receiver (perfect for this team behind TY, Grant and Rogers.)

  5. Best WR available on ESPN's board. Just watched 3 minutes of highlights and the kid reminds of DeAndre Hopkins. Can catch corner and sideline routes on his back shoulder with a defender on his back/in his face. 6'1" 210 when Hopkins is 6'1 214...

Good pickup in a position group that needs some athletes. Good size compared to some of our guys (TY, Ryan Grant and Chester Rogers- all under 200 and smaller than Fountain)

I'm not saying he is a bad player. I honestly don't know a lot about the guy. I hope all you guys who are excited about this are right and he is a star. I personally would have gone in a different direction like LB, WR, or CB.

Allan Lazzard is going to be there for us in the 5th. Connection with Tom Manning the new tight ends coach, former Iowa State O-Coordinator. We will snag 2 receivers through the rest of this draft/UDFA

Fastest guy at the combine. We have Mack. Looks like we added more speed.

Interesting that they didn’t go for a bigger back. Either they WANT speed, or they’re very confident in Matt Jones to be the big back.

He can catch too. Another weapon for Reich to utilize.

They want speed. They want guys that can create space and matchup problems... Hines can cause a lot of headaches in the passing game for linebackers. What linebacker is going to cover this in coverage?

On paper it definitely seems like a solid philosophy. I mean honestly,  how could some get mad at pass rush picks? We have ZERO rush,  we have to draft them, FA isn't an option.

Getting annoyed at what school they came from or if they were drafted a round to high is dumb.

The same people complaining about reaching for these guys were perfectly fine with settling for Roquan Smith or Edmund's at 6.

I would love your post... but I ran out of reactions on the day. Most of which are laughing at posters.

I'm "huh"ing because he seems a lot like Mack and there were better guys available at other positions that fit our needs. But that's my opinion.

He is a lot like Mack. Why wouldn't want more of that speed. He's nearly 200 lbs and will be able to break tackles in this league. This is going to be a dangerous 2 man tandem behind the interior o-line we have.

What needs were as big as runningback going into this draft? Many were calling for a 2nd round back.

He's overrated. I want a dominant LT. Move him to RT or trade him. Tear it down

That is highly unlikely and not necessary with what we just drafted. He was the best offensive lineman last year in production and stability. We need Castonzo now and going forward... Likely won't have a shot at bringing someone better in until it's time for him to retire.

You don’t need stud wide receivers when you have a QB like Luck and a strong Oline.

And the Defense as a whole will play better with better line play. I still think we should have taken a corner early but I digress.

I trust Chris Ballard. Call it blind faith, but he has a vision and a plan for this team that has not changed since he stepped foot in the building. He’s assembled a strong scouting crew (based off everything we’ve heard), so I trust their talent evaluation.

And I trust Frank Reich and his coaches to develop and coach these youngsters up. Especially the ones who were spurned by the [insert rude and vicous term here]. They’ve got something to prove.

It isn't just Ballard... He brought in Ed Dodds which most casual fans and many forum posters probably don't even know who he is. VP of Personnel.

Straight from his bio on the website.

"Dodds was part of a staff that was responsible for drafting franchise players in center Max Unger, safeties Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor, cornerback Richard Sherman, quarterback Russell Wilson and linebackers Bruce Irvin and Bobby Wagner."

He had a big part in those drafts and knows what the heck he is doing...

The one thing i did notice on all the actual scouting reports of the guys drafted was all of them had phrases like 'violent hands' or 'quick off the ball'.

Love how he's trying to make this team up with more physical athletic guys. We've definitely been a soft team last few years.

Turay is quick as anybody in the draft off the ball and uses his hands really well. I'd say all 5 of these picks have violent hands in Ballards eyes. Colts fans won't even recognize this team this season as we have had a really soft mentality on the field the past few years.

I don't think Chuck was a good coach, but I'm starting to feel bad for him because this is the type of team/vision he wanted when he wanted to "build the monster." Grigson just couldn't put it together.

Here's the thing that annoys me about this whole process.

These guys have not even made it to Indy for the press conference yet but we get all the histrionics about Ballard reaching or thinking he's smarter than everyone else and all the other nonsense that people have said on here.  Can these guys play a game or two for Indy first before we decide the draft is a total bust?  That seems logical to me.

And by the way - this same theory applies to those who are overly effusive in their praise of a player or the draft as a whole.

I agree 100%. I try to remain objective with these players as only time will tell. But Ballard's vision includes developing players over several years. Pass rushers don't just come out the womb and get to the quarterback. It takes a while to develop them into superstars. Some people cannot grasp that. I think Basham and Turay have tremendous upside and I hope sincerely at least one of them turns into a true passrusher. I reserve judgement.

Not all these picks will pan out. Hopefully more do than don't. Wish they get a pass rusher from one of these draft picks.

Geez, what's the next 2 years look like for me Genie man?

Turay is the passrusher. Go watch the film and you'll see that he has serious upside. Pass rushers take some time to develop.

Clearly people who say reach have a reason. You want a long paragraph explanation as to why. Clearly they believe there was better, or the person could have been there later. Whether they believe better scheme fit, better skill, or poor measurable, they have a reason. Which most likely are the same across the board as to why.

So why does it matter if they don't explain to you, you can probably guess why anyways.

With that being said, you are discounting anyone who disagrees by stating they reached. Which again is most of the problems, or they preferred someone else. I liked Connor Williams and thought he would be better. Landry or Carter would have been better. Lewis would have been there four picks later as he was far from the best available, by all draft grades. Green and Hubbard were better than the two DE's we got.

Does that suffice even though I, nor anyone else, owe you any kind if explanation?

This is a forum for discussion... if they have a valid reason, why wouldn't they air it and discuss it like an adult human being? I'm not discounting people that disagree, you continue to say that. I respect differing opinions like the one you just posted. I said I don't respect people that in their best Donald Trump impression say "WRONG>>>BALLARD REACHED... I'M RIGHT" with no reasoning, and generally, no ability to back it up.

Hubbard was considered by many to be better yes. Lewis was a 2 time team captain of the Ohio State football program. Perhaps Ballard likes his leadership and character and ability to stop the run better than his teammate Hubbard? Could that possibly be why he liked him better? NFL.com has Lewis rated 0.2 lower than Green and Hubbard and Turay even closer in ratings (even though he's considered an edge rusher when none of the other 3 are) But you know this, right?

1:51 of this video against Michigan and the next play against Illinois really shows his explosiveness. He hesitates on the first play against Michigan and recognizes a loose ball and just gets after it. Illinois he comes off the ball like a rocket and makes the RT look like a fool. Great use of hands and his length. Lot of speed.

This kid is going to grow on all of us.

Nick Nelson, DaVonte Harris, JC Jackson (character), Dane Cruikshank, and a few others are available beginning day 3.

Hairston was a 5th round pick IIRC.

This is where my frustration starts. People act like the draft is over after day 2. We have some good players on the roster from rounds 4 and 5. We will get 3 more good players from those rounds today.
