The bad thing that comes with winning is your drafting a lot lower.  Once your winning you almost have to fill holes with FA if you need a playmaker. Of course you can trade up or trade for a player also.  The foundation of this team is almost set.

Um, no? Do you realize how many playmaking receivers are in this draft? If we wanted, we could get two playmakers at 26 and 34 that would immediately make a difference and take this offense another level up. I don't know where you got that idea, but it couldn't be further off. Pretty sure the Patriots found their playmaking runningback in the draft last year, no?

Well, the consensus is that we are going to buy FA's, and we did last season...because the cupboard was so bare, but that is not the case now. I also think Ballard sees in house development, as the depth this season as opposed to FA's. JMO....but no, I dont think we are signing starters.

I lean toward this opinion. Don't know if it will happen or not, but I laugh at the fans hoping and praying Ballard goes bonkers in FA. One individual on twitter has us getting Flowers, Collins, Ty Williams, and Humphries in FA.... do-what? Ballard is going to be so selective it won't be funny to most on here.

Sure you can. Luck is 30.  How long would it take. When we are as close as we are and only need a couple pieces you do get them if they fit in the locker room.

I don't know, one more year? Ha. We are closer than we have been since Luck has been here, using a completely different philosophy and path than the previous administration, and all of a sudden everyone wants to change course and go bonkers in Free agency. It's funny man. It's just funny to me.

I think it's difficult to improve if you exclude any aspect of that or limit yourself to just second tier players in free agency just because we didn't draft them in the first place.

I don't agree on this. And I'm 100% positive Ballard wouldn't agree on this. I absolutely think you can stay out of the first wave of FA every single year and get better. We did last year, without any doubt. I think we did under Bill Polian. I know we can build a perennial championship roster by placing high priority on the draft/developing and raising our own, while simultaneously finding value in FA and at various points in the year as we have been under Ballard.b

Agree with you about the safety position but not sure about the MLB position. Having a linebacker corps of Mosley, Leonard & Walker rather than Leonard, Walker and Franklin would seem worth $11m a year to me.

Possibly. I'd be more in favor of this and finding a safety and wide receiver in the 2nd and 3rd windows of FA, and then focusing on d-line and defensive back in the draft rather than going after Collins and Flowers.

I'm not sure they are overvalued, they just get paid a lot. So do top tier guys who come to the end of their original rookie deal though.

I agree on Collins that the safer class is deep however he's still the top of it at his position same as Mosley.

To put it another way. If we'd drafted Mosley and Collins and they had put up the production they have to date would you be happy for us to re-sign them at what is perceived to be their market value?

The difference between perceived value and actual value is only found on the Free agency market. If a player signs an extension with the team that drafted them, it could be far less than what other teams would throw at them/jack the price up in FA. When you are dealing with a person exclusively, it's a) easier to sign because they aren't being pitched by multiple teams and b) they are your guys...

So yes, I would be fine if we were in the capspace and those guys were on our roster looking for extensions. But they are not. For all we know, they might think Indianapolis sucks and it would take a lot to get them here...

And those guys being at the top, will set the market. I don't think I want Ballard being a market setter, and I know he doesn't either. The talent margin (at the safety position especially) isn't wide enough to deviate from philosophy and go over value on a player.

  7. 1 hour ago, ClaytonColt said:

Well then we miss out on good players and they go to other teams.

Just because they haven't panned out for us before doesn't mean it's the wrong thing to do. The Patriots splashed out on Stephon Gilmore and that worked for them.

You can't just ignore a whole swathe of potential recruits because we didn't draft them originally and they are good enough to be expensive. We have to pick good players up from every opportunity available.

And so far, Ballard has been fantastic on that front... When it comes to guys like Collins and Flowers, they are overpriced... First tier of FA is always overvalued. It always makes me laugh when people think we aren't trying to get better when we don't throw whatever money these guys demand at them. I'm not in favor of getting into bidding wars for guys that won't produce for what you are paying them. I'm interesting in finding value. The safety class in FA is thick. It isn't Collins or bust. Flowers, in my opinion, is not an elite pass rusher, and shouldnt be paid like one. I'd rather try and get a second tier player and see what falls in the draft to us. Give Turay another year to develop, and see what happens next year with Demarcus Lawrence, who I absolutely think is worth what he commands. I'm not in favor of a big splash in FA. We can get much better by staying the course.

  8. 13 hours ago, ClaytonColt said:

Of course it's a bad thing. You have to attract talent from every available avenue and if you want to sign top class free agents you have to offer a deal that 31 other teams can't.

If you want to term that as overpaying then so be it however you can't miss out on good players because you are focused on solely building through the draft.

And if we don't want to sign the top class of FA because they are overvalued? I think we signed some dang good FA's last year. If we have another offseason like the last one, we are going to be a true contender. Why do we need to pay big money to overvalued FA's? They haven't panned out in the past for us. Cherilous, Landry, Johnson. All busted. I'd rather be smart and make low risk moves than watch money be tossed in the toilet. Chris Ballard is playing moneyball... and so far making it look like the right thing for this organization.

Time to use some of that cap space and get players like Mosley and Collins over the line.

Young, accomplished, No obvious red flags, fit the system. If you don't pay these sorts of guys in free agency you're never going to pay any one.

...Except your own. We may never pay anyone in FA big money, you are correct. But is that a bad thing? I don't see it. If we are going to overpay anyone, it better be the Darius Leonard's of the Colts organization that were drafted, home grown, and well deserved of the pay day.

    Just my $.02

Ford had 42 tackles, 13 sacks and 7 forced fumbles last season but some don't want to give up anything over a 4th round pick for him?

    Yeah I don't get it.

While I'm not in favor of losing multiple picks by trading up in the draft, unless it's just an absolute knock out, I am in favor of moving a 2nd round pick that isn't even top 50, to get a big time proven pass rusher who has the speed to play big in this system.

  11. Ballard has stressed speed as what he views in an edge rusher. Period. There are different ideals for 4-3 body types depending on the style of 4-3 being played. For our particular style, speed trumps and Ford fits the bill. He was coming off the edge out of a 3 point stance and dominating us in the divisional game. If we can get him for our 59th pick, then I wouldn't be upset.

I think we see what he does this season and pay accordingly. When the wheels come off TY, its gonna look ugly. When that time will be is the question. He will be 32 near the start of his next contract, I am not sure 4 years at that price is wise. I am almost in the camp of play out the contract and then move on while the iron is still hot. Maybe a 3 year extension you can get away from with little to no cap hit after 2. IDK

When do the "wheels come off?" No way of knowing. If we try and time it and let him go and he produces for another team for 4 more seasons, CB will never hear the end of it. He's a pillar to this franchise, and I think he will continue to produce well after he slows down a bit. With the proper receiving core in Frank's system, he will always create headaches for defenses.

The article asks the question: What's the downside?

The downside is the Texans don't match, we give up two first rounders, and then Clowney opts out after two years and we can't use the tag to keep him.

Agreed. The best scenario would be an nfc team making the offer and putting the Texans in a tight spot.

  14. 3 minutes ago, Superman said:

Non-exclusive tag, not the transition tag. The Colts would have to send two first rounders to the Texans if they signed Clowney to an offer sheet. I don't think Ballard will be interested.

The Browns used the transition tag on Mack, so even if they hadn't matched the Jags' offer sheet, they weren't receiving any draft pick compensation from the Jags.

I updated that post. I left that out, but understand it. It talks about it in the article.

Interesting article that could be in Ballard's playbook this offseason. Apparently it is a non-exclusive tag, meaning we could offer him a deal that the Texans won't match. Either we end up with a premier edge rusher on a team friendly deal of two years, or the Texans are forced to overpay for him which would hurt them dramatically down the line, especially in a few years when Watson is up for a new contract. Two first rounders is hefty, especially for Ballard. But if he thinks Clowney is a for sure bet and willing to believe we are getting him for a couple 25 and later picks the next few years, he might be willing to take the risk they don't match.

I don't see him gift wrapping 1st round draft picks, but will be interesting if he or anyone else for that matter make an offer.

Did this one last night... felt REALLY good about it.

    1- Christian Wilkins- iDL

    2- Hakeem Butler- WR

    2- Chase Winovich- Edge

    3- Renell Wren- iDL

    4- Rock Ya-Sin- CB

    4- Parris Campbell- WR

    5- Justin Layne- CB

    6- Ben Banogu- Edge

    7- Miles Boykin- WR

Probably didn't need the 3rd WR, but I just saw Boykin sitting there and couldn't pass it up that late.

There is legit, zero chance, that Boykin goes past 3rd round, maybe 4th in this draft. I'd be willing to suggest he's no later than 2nd round. Guy is going to be a very good/valuable pro in this league.

  17. He can thank Frank Reich for reviewing film with him and figuring out a game plan to suit him best for the superbowl run... and he'll be able to thank Frank Reich going forward for never seeing the postseason again... Lateral move in my opinion from Blake Bortles. Jags are in cap trouble and don't know how to draft a franchise qb.
