  1. I think we are basing too much off of our preseason. I have said it before, you can get little, to nothing, out of our preseason performance. The Colts show nothing and do not tip their hat to anything. Even in these past years with Peyton, we show nothing in the preseason.

The OP makes some valid points. The Jags are the Jags. They just Del Rio'ed themselves this week. The Titans do have Hasselbeck and Johnson, but we cannot forgot that CJ has not practiced at all this preseason, he will not have his legs back for some time. The Texans have Schaub and Johnson, but Foster still has a messed up hamstring and Vontae Leach left through free agency.

If the Colts were to experience a situation like the one they are in, this seems like the perfect storm of a season for it to happen.

We can sweep Jacksonville and Tennessee, and I would say we can at least split with Houston. It is all a guessing game.

We have professionals on our team. Professionals that can and will step up when motivated. The Texans had better be ready because the National media has fired them up.

  2. A few general observations....

    1. Kerry Collins hasn't lasted 17 seasons without ability. Is he Peyton? No, no one is and no one may ever be like Peyton. Different does not always equal worse.

    2. The rest of this team is healthy, relatively speaking. Gonzo can go if needed and Collie is ready to go. I took exception to Kurt Warner saying on the NFL Network tonight that our offense is not as talented as the Rams Superbowl Offenses. With the exception of Marshall Faulk, I put our offense ahead of what they had. We are not a group of talentless puppets with Peyton pulling the strings. We have ability and I am sure that Kerry Collins has the ability to run an offense...not Peyton's offense, but an offense that will be effective.

    3. Our O-line will be fine. Terrible thought, but wouldn't you rather Costanzo get beat in a few games without Peyton. He will eventually be a top LT in the NFL, but if a few misses smack Kerry around at least it isn't Peyton getting his head bounced off of the turf.

    4. This is going to be a crazy year, regardless of Manning. It will be injury riddled and teams will be forced to go to different options. Who is better equipped to deal with injuries than the Colts? Crap, last year they practically signed everyone including the homeless guy under Union Station to fill a hole. We can adapt and survive.

    5. Texans....most likely no Arian Foster and a brand new defense. I do not think they will be ready on defense. Collie and Clark will tear them apart and we will see at least 1 deep ball to Wayne or Garcon. With no Foster and Leach leaving via free agency, they are not the juggernaut running that they were. Our defense is going to stuff the run and our Freeney/Mathis rush will yield 2 or 3 sacks.

    6. Anything is possible. In 1995, did we think we would see Jim Harbaugh lead us to the playoffs? Nope. We have been treated to a decade of amazing football. I truly do not think that we are harkening back to Jeff George (or worse). Kerry will be ready. The team will be ready. They will making the talking heads eat crow. This will end up being one of the more enjoyable seasons in a long time. Remember, unless Peyton is on IR, he can be on the sidelines and literally coach that offense and pass some knowledge. At the very least, it will be interesting.

    GO COLTS!

  3. I just do not get some people. All day I have heard people talking about how they wanted to see more last night. News flash...they are not going to show a lot to a team that they play again, on the road, in week six.

That being said, Darren Evans made Donald Brown look like he is clueless. If you just look at the point of attack Evans welcomes the hit and pushes through, Brown tip toes and quits. Not that Polian will pull the trigger, but I think Brown has signed his pink slip and that sucks because I really like him.

I also feel like the Defense will become more active now that we are leaving the preseason. I find it hard to believe that Larry Coyer isn't going to use some of the tackling strength we have at safety and LB. I think we will see a bigger push from our DT's and LB's....we were just never going to show it in the preseason.

I think we also saw that the Colts have given up on Painter. Collins is the back up for this season and 2012. At that point we will need to be looking for Peyton's successor. Painter and Orlovsky have shown little more than rookies or undrafted rookies that we could carry on a practice squad instead of wasting a roster spot.

All in all...the sky is NOT falling chicken little. 12-4 this year. Typical year from Peyton, mid pack defensively.

  4. I think they will make their roster cuts today. They want the weekend to survey the final roster and they are generous enough to give the guys who get the axe a chance to get to another team before the season starts.

As for Taj Smith....I think he makes the squad. It looked to me like the huge gainer last night was under-thrown and he adjusted to make that catch. He also looked like he played hurt following that play, so I am willing to give him a pass on dropping a couple of balls. I think he has tremendous upside and if he can make Dan the Man look good imagine what Peyton can do to him.

  5. He will play, end of discussion. I have thought, from the moment we signed Kerry Collins, it was to be a real backup to Peyton. The timing after the 2nd Pre-Season game cemented that for me. In my opinion, Orlovsky beat Painter last night, but seeing how they rested Painter for the evening it is clear that Billy P. isn't ready to admit failure on our "Jeff Spicoli" wanna-be QB.

    1. Manning

    2. Collins

    3. (or Practice Squad) Painter

  6. I wish him luck in ATL, but let's all face it. It does not matter how talented you are....if you cannot get on the field you become a liability. It was a shame with Bob Sanders and Kelvin, but you have to look at body of work. On the field both were great, but how often were they on the field? I wish them both well this year, but I would rather have 6 B- players that 2 A+ players that can never be out there to play.

  7. I think the Colts did some 2 TE sets in pre-season just for this reason. To give the Texans two different scenarios to gameplan for. We have showed some success running the ball in this formation as well. It's gotta be a nightmare for Wade Philips with his new defense and having to gameplan for both Kerry Collins and Peyton Manning. I'm this close to feeling a little bit sorry for the guy haha

I am convinced that Peyton will play vs. the Texans. However, even for a player of Peyton's caliber, it is going to be impossible to jump out there and be in command of the entire playbook. Mentally he has it, but physically, it is based on muscle memory and repetition. Further, we have a different O-line. With Castonzo covering Peyton's blind side, it is not in anyone's best interest for tons of audibles and trips packages. I look for a lot of 2 TE sets for 3 to 4 weeks. Peyton can step in to vanilla and cram it down just about anyone's throat. It also means the rest of the team can practice with Collins and it will be a simpler transition for them. More 2 TE sets will also allow our RB's to have a chance.
