  1. Trading Peyton would put the death blow to this franchise. What he has done is not unheard of in pro sports. Look at what LeBron did in Cleveland. He alone made them a contender. Same here, no matter how bad it is this year, if he can come back we stand a chance. He knows that. His legacy is cemented, but he could really make something for himself by staying and turning this around. He can do it, but he needs the support of a real coach and for the Polian's to drop their foolish pride and go all in for the team.

  2. Nothing is Caldwell's fault?? Are you kidding, with the amount of former Pro-Bowlers we have on this team, he should have had at least 1 win before now. I said it before, Caldwell is a nice guy, but this team is showing an unwillingness to play for him. So we fire him and we pull in an assistant, what is the worst case scenario?? We can't do worse than lose more. We need a change in philosophy. The Polian's aren't off the list either...they have crapped on their plate for two or three years. I give them a pass this year because I truly believe that Castanzo, Nevis, and Iljiana will become big factors. They did well this year, they just need to humble themselves and drop the dead weight...Hughes, Addai, Brown, etc.

Irsay, God love him, needs to cut out the crap on Twitter and focus on the reality of his franchise. If he doesn't we could be heading back to the not so distant past of sub-par to mediocre teams.

  3. I am nearly, physically ill, after watching last night's joke of a game. Did I expect them to win...not really, but I did expect them to at least pretend they care. Jim Caldwell has lost this team, if he ever had them in the beginning. Jim Caldwell is a lot like Tim Tebow. You can be an amazingly great person and terrible at your job. Jim Caldwell is a nice guy, but this game is about winning, not about being the best man off the field. I don't believe Tressel is the guy either. I am just completely sick. All of this talent and we look like Indiana playing Wisconsin. It is time for a change!! Irsay needs to lay off of the Twitter account and join the reality of life...find a coach. If Polian can't do it, find a new President and GM!!

  4. I feel like we are comparing apples to oranges. The 90's we were a more balanced squad. We didn't have 3/4 of our salary cap spent on 3 or 4 guys. When we drafted Peyton we decided to build up our offense around him...that costs money. We had enough left for a couple of defensive guys, but not a juggernaut, hence the use of Tampa-2.

It will take significant changes to make the cash needed for an overhaul. I will probably get slaughtered for this but here is a list of possible money saving moves:

    1. Don't resign Reggie (tough pill to swallow, but he will cost a lot)

    2. Get rid of Vinatieri (he is clutch, but we pay him to much for a kicker)

    3. Say goodbye to Brown and Addai(Addai has done well, but is still always hurt. Carter is a great player and Evans can be better than Brown)

    4. Say goodbye to Hughes

  5. While we do not know when, or if he is able to return, I remain confident of one thing. If anyone has the work ethic and determination to return from an injury of this type, it is Peyton Manning. I also think that we may see a man that is in incredible aerobic health. If the pain is relieved and he has anything left, he will be back with a vengeance.

  6. If you hire someone else, you have to be willing to change the scheme. We have not been prepared to spend the money on personnel to change the scheme. I feel like we will get some sweeping changes after this season. If Caldwell survives, we will have new coordinators all the way around. When Peyton is healthy we have an O-Coordinator on the field, we need a REAL defensive coach. Smash mouth, hit them because they look at you funny, defense. Angerer, Freeney, and Mathis are fitting that mold. Our DB play is pitiful at best!

  7. It seems to me that Painter's biggest issue is that he isn't the second coming of Peyton. He has gigantic shoes to fill and huge expectations of a fan base that has been used to winning for better than a decade. I truly feel like he is a step forward from Kerry Collins in 2011. Kerry Collins in 2008 and 2009 would be useful, he just doesn't have it left in him. Orlovsky is slower than Collins, that is why he was cut initially. Ultimately, we need wins. A loss is a loss, no matter the path.

  8. The problem is they don't have a crystal ball. Yes, they knew Peyton was hurt, but they have never had him be unable to recover prior to this. Should they have been more proactive? Yes, but when it has worked for 13 years, you try not to reinvent the wheel. Besides, who in God's name would they get? When you tie nearly ever cent you have in Peyton, Freeney, and Wayne, there isn't much left to be spent on players, especially a clip board holding backup QB.

Kerry Collins, on paper, seemed like it was a good move. He had a rough year last year, but had been solid overall. Now he is just old and slow moving. Either he has a concussion or he is tired of publicly sucking, either way it didn't work.

Painter has some energy and ability to move quicker. May not be a perfect solution, but who else are we going to use.

Orlovsky is nothing more than a place holder. Addai and McAfee are even less of an option, we had to do something.

I am over the gloom and doom. We need to back OUR team. Be thankful it isn't the 80's and the early 90's.

  9. Our defense has always been a pile of crap on 3rd downs. That is nothing new. What is new is out rushing an opponent for a change. I don't care who the offensive linemen are, they are in the NFL. We are improved....IMMENSELY!! Our coverage was weak, but we had a ton of 3rd downs where we pulled Mathis, in a stunt, around to the other side. That needs to stop, several of the plays looked like if he had stayed home we would have had 2 or 3 more sacks. Lacey is what he is....a very undersized, average ability, DB. He is not going to get a lot better. That is a draft area for next year. We would have all thrown a fit if we had drafted another DB before we addressed our O-Line and D-Line. We just have to suck it up. Maybe Angerer can pick him up and throw him at someone, that might help him.

  10. We have four on the roster for 2 or 3 weeks tops. If Kerry is going to recover and is better in a couple of weeks, Dan the man is gone. If Kerry stays hurt, they will either cut him (which I doubt because of $$), or put him on IR and Dan the man stays. I do not think, as long as Peyton is progressing that he will ever see the IR this season. If we get to the end of the season and we have nothing to play for, he may play a few series to get some reps before next year. If we get to the end of the season with a glimmer of hope, he will come back and play.

Painter showed real promise in his last preseason game and the final drive last Sunday was more Peyton-esque than Kerry "the receiver is 10 yards closer to the ground than my pass" Collins.

Ultimately, we are 0-3, the worst that happens is we hit 0-4. I think we might all be pleasantly surprised because we all have realistic expectation of this kid.

  11. I miss Bob as well. With the improvements we've made to our defensive front, I feel as though Bob would have had an easier go of it this year. He could take on HB's and WR's instead of TE's and linemen.

Bob was great...but he has the same problem the rest of our DB's have. They are too small. You can still have speed and get a guy with some size. As it stands, on pass plays, we have guys that can jump to the rafters, but so can the WR that they are covering. Consequently, they have to, literally, throw themselves at people to even come close to making a tackle. That leads to injury, after injury....i.e. Sanders, Marlin Jackson, Kelvin Hayden.

Back to the QB issue at hand though....one thing was clear when Painter took the field...the Offense had life!! The WR were not looking around and at their feet, they were looking for, and expecting, the ball! Yes, Curtis fumbled the ball, but he was drilled! Ben got drilled and lost the ball too. That should not dictate whether this kid is capable of running the offense. The games have shown that Kerry needed to stay retired or become a coach. He doesn't have the will or the agility to compete anymore. So, yes, this is a big blessing in disguise. The Colts get to play who they wanted to in the first place and now the public is on board with it because we saw that Painter is not as terrible as Kerry.

Good luck kid, go get them next week!

  12. What we are seeing is the wear and tear on Brackett. He is getting old. When you combine age, with being undersized for the position, his body can't keep up. He is one of the best minds on the defense but his body is betraying him now. Angerer is the real deal guys. He reads the offense well and has a tremendous reaction time. If we could only get some properly sized DB's we would be talking about a tremendous defense on this team.

  13. Dungy's philosophy worked for Dungy. Caldwell attempting to be Dungy Version 2.0 does not work. Coach Caldwell and his staff are stand up guys, but flat out poor coaches. We need a big change and in a hurry.

I like Fisher, Billick, Gruden, and Cowher. Realistically, Fisher would be the best fit. Fisher would be affordable for the Colts, he has an aggressive streak, and he and Polian have a mutual respect.

Peyton has given his body for this franchise, it is time for this franchise to do right by him and give him the best chance to win.

MAKE A CHANGE!! Bill....Jim....are you listening? Jim go get Abby to make you pay attention....MAKE A CHANGE!!

  14. Kravitz is, was, and always will be a complete *. He writes a sub-par column. Generally, my five year old daughter has a better perspective and thought process. * like Kravitz are what keeps the Star from becoming a top-tier newspaper.

Seriously, has he forgotten what Favre looked like last year? We have who we have....Favre will not be in the fold.

  15. Our Defense doesn't stand a chance if our Offense keeps choking. This is a 100% coaching issue. Good Ole' Boy Clyde is clueless of what to do. Watching him on Sunday reminded me of Leslie Nielsen pretending to be an umpire in the first Naked Gun movie. (Uhhh....stike?) You could literally see the wheels grinding to a halt....uhhh....run? It was terrible. Secondly, I do not think Kerry could hold on to the football if we super-glued it to his hands. 17 years and you still haven't figured out how to take a snap?

You cannot change the personnel of our defense overnight. Our offseason showed we are looking for some bigger guys. It will take time. In the mean time, we need to offense to put the stinkin' ball in the stinkin' end zone!!

  16. I realize we have some defensive issues, but honestly, we are not built to win with our defense. We are built to maintain and to slow down the other team, in hopes of trading touchdowns (for us) with field goals (for them). Our Offense is what held us back. I put that directly on our Offensive Coordinator. With the weapons we still have on offense, a constant barrage of field goals is ridiculous. If we start with three touchdowns, instead of three field goals, we are not having this conversation. We ran the ball well! We need to develop some play action with our sprouting run game.

This coaching staff has been content to ride the coat tales of Peyton. We now can see what we truly have. We have several nice gentlemen, who are great mentors, but not great coaches. This has been, and will continue to be, a very interesting year. This team will grow from this in one form or another.

  17. Reading some of these posts reminds me of a game at the old RCA Dome with the Falcons and Mike Vick. The talk leading up to the game was that Vick was going to run wild on us and that the Colts could do nothing about it. Freeney ate him alive. We had the ability last week, we lacked the intensity. This week, at home, will change things. Cribbs is an amazing talent, as is Peyton Hillis. I still think we can stop them. I actually like having Angerer at MLB. He was all over the field last week. I like Conner and Hagler. I do not think we will be as soft in the middle. If we can stop them a couple of times early, we can, and will, take the lead....and the game.

  18. I feel like run blocking is where this offensive line did it's best this preseason. Running, at this point, is not an option...it will have to become a way of life. Kerry Collins needs time to throw. He will only get time if we can have some type of run game to make the defense question a bit. I still feel like this offense is ready to breakout and be special. It would be nice for everyone to be looking for Hillis to have a big game for Cleveland, but instead Joe and Delone run wild on them. The crap T.V. broadcasters wouldn't know what to do.
