  1. simple: start him.

Some people may think I'm a Hughes basher. I said a lot of the same things about Hughes as I used to say about a guy named Rob Morris. Morris had a heck of a time his first few years in the league. He didn't play well in the middle. He was labeled a bust and i used to get so mad because we needed a good MLB at that time. Then, Tony Dungy came along. Moved him to SLB in his 4-3 and all of a sudden Morris turned into a pretty darn good player in that role.

Hughes has some time left to prove he isn't a bust. I think trying to compare Hughes to Freeney is a complete joke. Freeney has every pass rush move in the book not to mention freakish speed(in his prime)and great leverage. Same can be said for Robert Mathis. Hughes has 2 moves off the edge from what I've seen. That's not terrible. I think he looks natural standing up and he'll probably be OK in this defense next year if he gets a chance to start. I just don't think he's going to produce 10 sacks, and double digit tackles for loss.

  2. With Dwight Freeney likely moving on...I think Hughes is a 3rd down pass rusher...who can drop into coverage...as you say

    he seems fairly durable....

I doubt he'll ever be Freeney but he's bigger and faster..he improvedin 2012..didnt you think so?

Bigger and faster than Freeney? Absolutely no way. Straight line speed Freeney still beats him. Freeney ran a 4.44 when he was at the combine. I still say freeney is the fastest big man ive ever seen in the first 10 yards. I don't know why people are in love with Jerry Hughes. Yes, I agree Hughes looks more natural standing up than Freeney does and he will be a decent option as a OLB/DE. Freeney is shorter than Hughes but still outsweighs him.

Here's the way I feel about Hughes. He's not terrible. He just got drafted 3 rounds higher than he should have, thanks to Bill Polian. Polian himself said he made a mistake on Hughes. Hughes does not have the pass rush skills that Freeney has. He also does not have the ideal skills you look for in a traditinal OLB. He's just an average DE in this league and until he does something to prove me wrong I stick by that assessment.

  3. Actually we do need an OLBer like Kruger. I'm not sold on the idea of paying him what he's seeking but if we can give him a good enough offer he may take it. Freeney is going to be gone and IMO we can move Mathis to the rush spot and play Kruger in Mathis' spot.

The great thing about Kruger and Mathis is that they both could play either spot in my opinion. Great flexibility.

  4. how do you know u he had 4 sacks when he got his chances we already got someone that does what Kruger does we don't need that type of olb we need one that rushes mostly I prefer to keep Mathis doing what he does Kruger Is not worth what he wants and I for one pray the colts don't get him

no one knows for sure what Kruger is going to demand. But I'll say this, What I saw from Kruger was big time plays in big time games. I haven't seen Jerry Hughes do much and what I have seen out of him I'm not impressed with. Kruger would be a great addition to this team and I'm standing by that. Should he be paid what Mathis go last year? No I don't think so but he's worth some $ and we have money to spend. I certainly don't think he would be a total waste. He came up big for Baltimore during the stretch run and we don't have a lot of players that can do that on this roster.

  5. 1. JJ Watt

    2. Calvin Johnson

    3. Joe Thomas

    4. Darrell Revis

    5. Adrian Peterson

    6. Charles Tillman

    7. A.J Green

    8. Ryan Clady

    9. Maurice Jones Drew

    10. Haloti Ngata

No Von Miller even in your top 10? MJD has way too much mileage for my taste. Revis has some miles. Charles Tillman? Boy I just think Von Miller(aka Derrick Thomas part 2)is a fantastic piece to any defense.

  6. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000137611/article/paul-kruger-wants-to-remain-with-baltimore-ravens

I'm thinking that Kruger is willing to take much less money than his previous statements suggest. I understand that it doesn't matter whether or not he wants to stay in Baltimore (Its not really his decision). However, if he is really trying to work something out with them, he has to be aware of their cap situation and the fact that they can not afford him at the price he has talked about. His apparent willingness to come to an agreement with them seems to suggest that he is willing to take significantly less money in order work with a winning organization with good facilities ect... He will definitely make more in FA and I doubt that his agent is going to care as much about continuity ect. as Kruger seems to... Most players heading to FA express their desire to stay with their old team, mostly because their old team gets first crack at resigning them, so this might not mean a thing. But, between this and what seems like a general malaise surrounding the FA market so far this offseason, I think that we might just be able to work out a deal that makes sense...

After rewatching some games I like what Kruger does more than I did, but I still think Spencer is quite a bit better. Kruger is younger and probably further along than Spencer was 4 or 5 years ago, but for similar contracts I'd rather have Spencer. Kruger is not a bad consolation prize, though and could conceivably become a premier OLB in the league..

He says he wants to stay but in the next paragraph acknowledges that its "a story book ending" with the Super Bowl win. Kruger would like here in Indy. Same scheme. Familiar coach. Contender. What's not to like? If I were a betting man I would plunk down a pretty good chunck of change that Kruger is a Colt come March

  7. While size is important the Ravens Left Ends rotate in Arthur Jones and Pernell McPhee, McPhee is only 280lbs (he was drafted when Pagano was in charge of the D). so my thinking is, yes size is important but size is not the determining factor, I actually think Pagano would be alright with a guy that was 280-290lbs as long as he was explosive and could hold his ground

What do you think about the Kruger brother tandem on our side? Paul playing OLB and Joe playing DE?

  8. I think I would go with Von Miller. He's a great athlete and plays a position of critical importance to the 3-4 hybrid. He can play standing up or with his hand down and he's arguably the best at his position and he's in his prime. Miller can do it all. He can rush the passer, stop the run and cover in the pass game.

  9. I would like to see Grigson go in a direction that Polian didn't quite commit to. There needs to be balance for Andrew Luck and I'm talking about making sure that the line of scrimmage becomes a place where you understand that you need top talent. I think Grigson understands that. Polian did a great job with skill position players but tried to get by with what he could on the defenive interior and the offensive interior. We have to commit to getting top players into those areas.

  10. The Colts have traditionally spent very little time, energy and money dabbling in Free Agency, and I for one hope that trend continues. Do it in the draft and with post-draft unsigned talent as we always have. Grigs can spot it and bring it in on the cheap - NFL virgins - guys who are a perfect fit for our system. Bring the guys up right from day one as COLTS - with all the integrity, class, style and grace that COLTS fans have been known to expect, love and appreciate.

Forget Free Agency for the most part - maybe a little dabbling here and there....

    Trust the Grigs....

    ColtsHappy

Yes but there are typically some guys that can be brought in to help in certain situations. I like the idea of bringing in a 3-4 OLB who has played in this type of defense before and there are a few good ones that will be available.

  11. People thought Arians would bring in a true fullback and that didn't happen. Jim Harbaugh uses former tight end Bruce Miller and Delanie Walker as his fullback otherwise he just runs out of multiple tight end sets. And I didn't watch to much of Stanford probably watched two full games but #85 Ryan Hewitt is who Pep Hamilton used as his fullback. That dude is a tight end who just got plugged in as the fullback/h-back so Pep could find a way to get his playmakers on the field in my opinion since the tight end position was stacked at Stanford. But Hewitt finished 3rd on the team in receptions and reading sites like WalterFootball and others they say Hewitt could move tk tight end in the NFL, which leads me to believe Dwayne Allen would still be lined up everywhere just like he was this year. I don't see Pep using a true fullback here because he didn't use a true fullback at Stanford. But what do I know, I'm just one man's opinion.

i think they used a true fullback in 2010/11 if I'm not mistaken

  12. I'm willing to bet we won't even take/get a FB in the draft or free agency, and if we do he won't even make the 53 man roster.

Interesting take. Not saying your wrong just an interesting prediction. I definitely think that if Pep is gonna run something similar to what he ran at Stanford he needs a true FB. Not that they'll lineup with a FB every play but if you want a true power run game you need a FB that can really block like a traditional FB and you need a front line that is big. I also look for us to add some size up front. BIG guards that can also move.

  13. Personally I think we'll se a undrafted FA come in or maybe a late round selection for Fullback. I don't think that Hamilton is going to use a TE to play Fullback. He's going to want a battering ram type player. I don't think we have one on the roster. A lot of the options you guys mention are good ideas but i just get the feeling we're going to bring someone in. True fullbacks are a dying breed and they typically don't have value in the draft so getting a good one late or as an undrafted free agent is very possible.

  14. If you want to fix the SS problem, taking a gamble on Bethea is not the best way to do it, a few players I would look at for SS

    Shawn Williams(4th choice)

Ray Ray Armstrong (provided he actually has his head on straight, I'd gamble on him in the 6th or 7th)(5th choice)

    Cooper Taylor(2nd choice)

Shamarko Thomas although I cant help but think he is a future Bob Sanders waiting to happen (3rd choice)

    Robert Lester(top choice for me)

This will likely all be a moot point, Zb will get another shot, he has 2 years left on his deal, Im looking at Utahs Brian Blechen in next years draft to, although I'd love to know if the coaches think Brandan Bishop could play SS, he has the size

    Blechen highlights

:27 Seconds...Did I mention Bishop can hit to on top of his ball skills?

Blechen looks like a hitter but he looks like he plays with his pads too high. NFL running backs will run him over. He looks aggressive tho. Nice video on both

  15. Its been a long while since we've had a real blocking back. It sounds like with Hamilton coming in as OC he will want to have a big back in there to lead block. I like that. Old school football is what I like. I realize this isn't going to be the steelers of the 70's but if we are going to become a real west coast offense I loved the days of roger craig and Tom Rathman. I'd like to know what other fans think about this and who they think the team might bring in at fullback. A drafted player or a veteran free agent?

  16. I'd like to se moala play LB :D . we all know he's a DE/DT. I think McAfee, Powers, Avery, Karim, and Moala should get offered. Beyond that maybe Fokou and a couple of the special teams guys. Powers may not get a offer. He has injury problems and he didn't play all that well when he was healthy this year. Personally I thoght Avery did a nice job. Not a big $ FA tho.

  17. First $40 million is too much, especially for a person who has only shined one year. The second point I make is more relevant, and why I would not acquire Kruger.

Think of the name Adalius Thomas. Remember him only a few years back. The Patriots who are very selective in Free Agency signed him for quite the $$$ and what did they get. Not much. How about Bart Scott. First year after he left Baltimore he had an OK year, but downhill since then. Jarrett Johnson, same thing, played in Balt. and in FA last year SD swept in and got him. Has not produced a lot for the $$ paid. It seems that linebackers playing in that Baltimore system look very good. Playing next to Ray Lewis helps a lot, but being behing Haloti Ngata when he takes 2 guys on really helps you look good. That is why I would not do it. I think the system and players he plays with make him look much better. And even with that, he has only produced one good season!

Good post. I like different point of views on topics. I think tho that Bart Scott did play well for the Jets. Better than Thomas did for the Pats. Plus we play the Baltimore defense now so Kruger should be able to step right in. I like your points about playing with other top defensive players that's a valid point. FA is a risk. I'd take a shot at Kruger all the same. $40 million tho? No that's too much. There are other options that make more sense than overpaying for one player.

  18. Kruger has been a distinctly average player, sometimes below, until the last few weeks of this season. $40m would be an outrage.

I would agree with the 40 mil being too much. Paul and his agent are going to cash in regardless. Its a tough call. This guy could be the next big thing but right now I would say that he should expect a lesser contract than what we gave Robert Mathis last year.

If we are moving Mathis over to play Freeney's role just insert Hughes into Mathis's role, Hughes showed last year he can do that role well on limited snaps, he deserves to be the full time starter in that role in that case, I been saying you cant produce at high level being rotated in and out like Hughes has been

I think U and I banter back and forth last week about Hughes. I'm not as high on him as you are but I really do think that Mathis' role should be the Freeney role this year and Hughes and or new guy should be the Mathis role this year. I like Robert's hand on the ground more than standing up and I think Hughes is better off standing up. I do like Kruger though just from what I saw of him this year. I don't wanna see us give him a contract that is out of the ball park though. That's not smart team building

  19. Yeah, that talk about signing Boldin or Bowe is fantasy stuff. Grigs is too smart for that. He's already on record saying he's not going to break the bank for any one player unless everyone agrees they absolutely need him. No WR fits that definition.

I don't expect him to go after Long either. But for $20m he can pick up at least 4 really solid players. Or he could get Kruger for around $8m and then get two decent OGs.

I say no thanks to Boldin. We have a nice group of WR's now the way it is. I've never been a big Boldin fan. He burned us but he has a way of disappearing for games at a stretch. As for how Grigson is going to spend money? I don't know but there is a lot more $ available to the team this Free Agency period than at any time in the last 10 to 12 years. It's critical that he spends smartly so that we can add quality without putting ourselves in bankruptcy later. Plenty of holes need to be filled and we dont have a lot of draft picks.
