  1. It all comes down to availability in FA though. It would be pretty easy for us to make calculated projections of who we will take in the draft if we knew exactly who the Colts would pick of in FA, but despite what Grigson has said, the fact is the primary FA targets may not materialize and he goes with 2nd or 3rd choices of just completely different positions, there are 30 other teams potentially competing for players after all.

If we end up spending relatively big on two players in FA, you would like to think that the BPA mentality will be in place there as well, and it will not be just based on the positions he has assigned for FA pick ups.

Well, the reason I say that I think he'll try to sign OL in free agency has to do with his comments about young OL having a tougher time adjusting to the NFL than a young Corner. yes, there will be 30 other teams but not all 30 have a lot of $ to spend whereas our team has the 3rd or 4th most $ available.

  2. I find his comments about the offensive and defensive line to be interesting. He sees the defensive line as a big priority and I think that with Polian it was an afterthought. Especially the interior defensive line. If I were a betting man I would put down some $ that we're going to sign some veteran free agent OL and we will use our first draft pick on a DT or DE. Of course that's just my take on reading between the lines

  3.

Powers was atypical of Colts defensive back draft picks. He was more of a speed and coverage guy, not a good tackler (which is needed in Tampa 2) and more of a man cover guy. Scouting reports did not have him listed as a true cover 2 corner. I think last year was a step back and while he got beat a bit, he made some big plays. He desreves another chance. Oh.....durability was a noted weakness in his profile.

I would only sign him if he's willing to be reasonable. He is not worth the big dollar but I would sign him for the right price. His biggest drawback, in my opinion, is his lack of durability.

  4. He and his sister can go play for Washington for $14 mil a year. Not here. Reggie Wayne is making 7 a year. In my opinion Jennings has similar skills. No way he's worth twice what Reggie is making. Come back to reality

I take that back. I looked at his career stats. He can't hold Reggie's supporter. He can go to a psychiatrist and find out why he thinks he's worth $14 mil because he's insane for even thinking it.

  5. Is that one of the Jonas Brothers  :spit:

TY simply will get the ball in ANY place the Colts can to provide 'an open field.'  You will see the slants, dumps over the middle and as stated above the Play Action is key to disguising the running game....as well as opening even more space for Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen.  Play action deep to Hilton and a WR to be named later....will be FUN!   :)

And yes Lolly.....we need to see those bubble screens....middle screens to Ballard/Brown/(Karim?) and see if we cannot break one.

I feel with the change of offense, our avg point total will go up approximately 10 points a game.  Why?  I feel that this will be a team whose goal is to make it across the 50 EVERY possession.  It should also keep the defense off guard with plays being called 2 at a time/scripted to go no huddle. Bootlegs and designed roll-outs keep the defense off-guard as well and once again open up the middle of the field for catch and runs.... You notice I did not use the term WCO..... :)  :pass:  :pass:  :pass:  :coltslogo:  :coltslogo:  :coltslogo:  :colts:  :colts:  :colts: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I might be one of the few people who think that Donald Brown will actually benefit from this change in offense. He's our best pass catcher out of the backfield.

  6. How would you guys feel if we got a stud LT in free agency and made AC a RT? do you think hell transition well? why or why not? i personally think he will eventually come along but not within a season.

Here's another thought...Guards are a lot cheaper than Tackles. There are a number of elite guards in FA this year. Sign one or two of those guys and run the ball with success. Then, play action pass off of the run game success(like the WCO offense philosiphy)and watch how much better your pass protection gets....

  7. I don't think that was ever the plan. He was always viewed as a RT/OG prospect for us by management and coaches even before the ACL tears.

The only people who wanted him on the left side were some fans who thought Castonzo was overrated and, for some reason, wanted Ijalana there instead.

I was gonna say, I thought they really like Ijalana at RG

  8. Castonzo's game is similar to Joe Staley and Duane Brown's, at least in their early career. A very strong run blocker, but needs to work a little on his footwork against the faster edge rushers. Staley and Brown were the same way, and in the last couple years they really got it together. For my money, I'd take both those guys well-roundedness over Joe Thomas who is a shutdown pass blocker, but very lacking in the run game. I think Castonzo will become a truly elite LT, but patience is important for his development. Moving him to RT, while I think he could make the transition, would be pointless. People get caught up on the whole 'LT is a pass blocker, RT is a run blocker' stereotype too much. Pressure in your face can be just as hard to deal with as pressure from your blindside.

I too think that Castanzo is a really good run blocker. He gets to the 2nd level well and moves very well for a big man. Remember, he missed quite a few games his first year so in terms of NFL experience he doesn't have 2 full seasons.

  9. He didn't say that and nothing close to it.  Freeney already had a contract from Polian.  That contract was back loaded due to Freeney agreeing to push money back in the past to help us with the cap in early years of that deal.  I am sure had Polian stayed GM Freeney was never going to see the last year of that contract.  I am sure Polian probably thought they would be able to either cut him and go with Hughes by that point or extend Freeney to free up the money last year.

However, when Polian was fired things changed.  Grigson came in and was left with the last year of Freeney's contract and at first tried to shop it if you believe reports and didn't find a deal that he liked.  So then he had three choices, release Freeney, extend Freeney without knowing if he could work in a 3/4 defense knowing that if he didn't that they would end up taking a cap hit down the road from having to release him because he didn't fit the new system, or let Freeney play out the last year of the contract in a year the Colts were using to clean up their cap mess anyways.   I am sure Grigson figured had Freeney worked in the 3/4 worst case they would use the franchise tag to work out a new deal if they needed to or if he didn't they could just let him walk and take no future cap hits.  He elected to do the later.

So I don't think it was a fiasco it was a plan to make sure we had the most money we could possibly have going into this off-season.  It was hardly a case of Grigson seeing Dwight Freeney and going "Oh my Gosh it's Dwight Freeney I have to make sure this guy is the highest paid player in the NFL this year!"  It was Grigson doing what he thought was best for us long term to manage the last year of Freeney's deal.

I think you are right on. Grigson's was stuck between a rock and a hard place with Freeney. The team ate his huge cap #. Grigson made some really good low cost free agent moves which put the team in position to make the playoffs even with the inability to spend a lot of $ in free agency last year. It worked out.

  10. Nah, the entire quote was “(But) I don’t want to go after a name just because that’s easy. Not in my DNA to go after names.” It seems to me that he's talking about considering players based on ability, not name recognition. The later is important to fans ("I've heard of him therefore he must be good") and certain "media conscious" owners, but I would hope that it's not important to ANY decent good personnel man - particularly since "names" tend to earn more - usually out of proportion to their value.

And I'm not sure that I would consider Davis a "big name" myself.

I think what he meant was I'm not going to sign Jake Long for 70 million if I can get a Phil Loadholt for half that and get just as much production. He isn't gonna sign a guy based on reputation.

  11. Sanders was a freak. I live in iowa. We're Hawk fans. My son went to Iowa. Great great memories. The best is when we went to terre Haute for the opening of training camp and Bob walked into the lobby of our hotel. he was still holding out at that point. My boys got a handshake and an autograph. The man was a 5-7 Hercules.

  12. Evan Silva is a writter for roto news. He has nothing to do with this or reporting other NFL news. He does things such as rate players fantasy values and other silly stuff like maybe ranking QB's from 1-10. So if your questioning the validity of the report that the Chiefs are making a push to  resign Bowe , it probably is a reasonably accurate assessment of the situation. It's usually no secrete that a team and player are in serious negotiations and there is not a lot of reason for sides not to "leak this " or make it public knowledge.

No i wasn't questioning that just the fact that he put Paul Kruger as his #1 FA. Like I said I like Kruger but I don't think he's the #1 free agent this year.

  13. This is a big year for Grigson. He did a fantastic job of getting the team into the position it is in this year. Meaning we're 40+ million under the cap and we don't have any dead weight. He brought in a number of lower priced free agents who produced well. Now that he has some $ to spend he needs to land a few top end free agents who will be difference makers and be around 4 to 5 years. This years free agents are going to have to be the glue that puts together a super bowl run. I realize the draft is important but FA is where you spend most of your money and if you spend it foolishly you put yourself in a bad position. I hope he does as well this year as he did last.

  14. So far we have:

    Syracuse safety Shamarko Thomas

    Pittsburgh running back Ray Graham

Virginia Tech wide receiver Corey Fuller

    James Madison guard Earl Watford

    Kansas State Linebacker Arthur Brown

North Carolina defensive tackle Sylvester Williams

    Rice Tight End Vance McDonald

    Texas Defensive End Alex Okafor

    Harding Linebacker Ty Powell

Powell look interesting. 6-3 250 and had 8.5 sacks. He certainly looks the part of a 3-4 OLB.

Williams also looks like a beast. 14 tfl and 6 sacks from the DT position.

  15. For all the "sign Bowe" posters.....

Appearing on Total Access, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported the Chiefs are actively pursuing a long-term deal with free agent Dwayne Bowe.

The sides have already met, and Rapoport expects talks to continue in the coming weeks. Coach Andy Reid was said to be very high on Bowe when he came out of LSU in 2007. As the 2012 season winded down, the Kansas City Star said the Chiefs were not expected to offer Bowe a long-term deal, but since then the regime has changed. There's no reason to think Bowe can't get Vincent Jackson money -- five years and $55 million with $26 million guaranteed. Bowe checks in as our own Evan Silva's No. 2 overall free agent, behind Paul Kruger.

Whoever Evan Silva is...is a fool in my book. Paul Kruger rated #1 free agent? Hey, I like Kruger but #1 overall free agent? Boy, that's really stretching it. The guy had a nice season there's no questioning that but he's not what I would consider to be a "must have" for any team. He's in his prime for sure. And he's coming off of a season where he really took off but he didn't even take all the defensive snaps for Baltimore so I'm really questioning you Evan Silva...

  16. Looks overall like a solid list.  While I love to draft my OL too for the 'youth, exuberance, and $$$$$', we need to use free agency to get at least one quality OG and a solid OT....could be one of Grigson's "middle tier' guys that just go out and get the job done. Try to trade Satele!

Cornerback and safety will be by BPA in the draft...here is to hoping a solid CB is brought in via FA.  Butler may make it...Vaughn needs to rhyme with GONE (Oh sorry it does  lmao )  Not opposed to a FA safety as well......William Moore is growing on me daily.

Zbkowski as I have said needs to be a 3rd safety and not a 1....he can be a leader on the field on special teams and his knowledge of the 'Raven defense."  Lefeged  IMO is better than Zibs....and can battle with him on ST.

I totally agree we need the NT to step up if we want to be better.  I feel if healthy Chapman IS the man....he is the atypical NT at about 6' 1" 320......instant double team.  Not a single NT commanded a double team last year other than Big Brandon McKinney in the preseason.  Antonio Johnson did play his tail off....and Tevaseau may have actually played the best NT of all....still agreed this needs to be a "POWER" position...a true NEED.

Not mentioned here is our  need for a Freeney replacement......FA with Kruger or Spencer..or...draft and try Hughes/Harvey (Harvey will make the team...a beast on ST) As mentioned in other threads, Hughes is much better in the Mathis role...if he can play 'contain.'

i also think Chapman, if returning at 100%, can be the guy at NT. He was a potential 1st or 2nd round pick last year had he not tore his ACL. He was very well though of by many and showed a lot of guts playing through that kind of injury. That's toughness. He just might surprise a lot of people and I don't think Grigson would have spent a 4th round pick last year on a guy he probably knew wouldn't contribute year one if he didn't think the guy was a potential starter at NT

  17. Bowe WR 5 years 45 million

Barwin OLB 5 years 30 million

Vasguez OG 4 years 24 million

Baker OT 2 years 8 million

I'm also not sure why there is a big fascination with a top FA wr this year. We have Reggie who just came off of one of his best seasons. He shows no sign of slowing down. T.y. had a great year. Avery wasn't bad, he made some big plays. I'm just not sold on spending 50 mil on a big time WR. I'm softening a little on Jennings and Bowe is intriguing but it's a ton of money and somelthing that should be well thought out.

  18. We got a hometown discount for Reggie, and he's five years older.

Take a look at this site to get a better idea of what receivers in the NFL make. Just an example: Garcon got $8.5m/year from the Redskins.

    http://www.spotrac.com/top-salaries/nfl/average/wide-receiver/

Well, we're talking about the Redskins. We all know they have made numerous stupid moves in FA. Garcon was not worth that kind of $ and would only have gotten it from the Redskins. The other salaries on that list are eye popping but it can be deceiving knowing that a lot of the contracts are backloaded and they sometimes factor in parts of their signing bonus in order to spread it out over a # of years.

here's my concern and I've said this in other posts. I'm all for getting weapons. But if you ignore the line of scrimmage or place a lower value on it, like it appeared that Polian did, then you have problems. you can't stop the run, you can't run, you cant rush the passer and you have trouble protecting the QB. so, like another poster said, if we can get him and still upgrade some other areas great but I don't want to see the LOS ignored like in the past.

  19. I know this will make a lot of people mad on this forum because they hate when we talk about adding WR's

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport mentions the Rams, Colts, Vikings, and Dolphins as potential landing spots for free agent Greg Jennings.

The Rams, Colts, and Vikings are new teams to be linked to Jennings, but the Dolphins have long been associated with the 29-year-old. "All other 31 teams are an option," Jennings said Wednesday. Jennings won't approach Vincent Jackson money (five years, $55 million), but he could command $7-9 million a year from a receiver-needy club. He can also play in the slot and outside, making Jennings more appealing to teams that like "move" receivers.

The thing I would have to ask myself is, is Jennings that much better than Reggie? IDK what they gave Reggie last year but 7-9 mil seems like a lot of $ for a reciever who isnt named Calvin Johnson.

OK, I looked it up. Reggie got a 3 yr 17.5 million deal last year. In my opinion Jennings is not in Reggie's league. Not far behind but would have a hard time giving Jennings that kind of $
