He did have some throws in the final drive that could have been picks if the defender made a better play.   That drive was also aided by a 4th down defensive holding call that extended the drive

overall it was a desperation drive.  It’s one thing if teams are in a shootout and each has scored 5 touchdowns. You kind of expect a better drive with  1:50 left.

But both teams played old school football. Out of necessity really.  Either team lighting it up in the last 4 minutes seemed pretty remote   Levis was slinging it kinda wildly because of the situation.  But also made some damm nice plays along the way.

I said he made some nice throws as well, not sure why I was being singled out by the other poster because I said he also had some questionable throws. I thought he played pretty well.

right, but your statement basically agrees with me.

we are missing players. any defense will struggle without a number 1 corner, and a true edge rusher. combine that with a hobbled leonard, and udfa corners, you get one of the worst pass defenses

Yeah,  not arguing,  just stating some stats and ranks.  I do wish we would blitz a little more.   Our D is so boring.

Saw this idea on Colt's Reddit, and I liked how the conversation there went. I think it's an interesting question, so of course I have to come and ask my favorite Colts board.

My unpopular opinion is that Gus Bradley's defense isn't that bad. Sure, some parts of it are, in particular, prevent situations, but overall it is not a bad scheme, we are missing the two outside corners right now, and we lack depth on the defensive line, making it harder to get pressure with 4 only.

one user (TheGravPav) on Reddit posted" Just because we aren't winning a ton right now doesn't mean we need to fire Ballard or have Irsay step down."

I know we are missing guys, but we are ranked 27th in defense, and 32 with points allowed at 28.6.  Our defense just is not getting it done.  We need that elite edge rusher and a cover LB.  I think our corners will do better by years end (and once Brents is healthy.)

Middle of the road drafting equates to middle of the road team performance.

He isn't as bad as some make him to be. But he isn't great as some make him to be. He is good in certain areas but not good enough to give us the playmakers to put us over the top. Hence mediocre overall as a GM, objectively.

When we did have Luck and Rivers as QB, we made the playoffs and until he hits on that QB performance, his roster won't make the playoffs again. Forget division titles for now. The roster is not good enough to elevate an above average QB and make the W column look good but it is good enough to piggyback on a good QB to make the playoffs and make the W column look very good (double digit wins is what I define as very good), that is it.

Did you mean below average QB?

For any QB that we get, in order for me to think they may be the next Manning or Luck, they have to have at least 2 very good to great years. Some people for some reason want to put a QB in the Hall of Fame when they have had 1 great game. Look at Brock Purdy now, the last 3 weeks he has played poorly. First 10 starts he had, some people were saying he was Joe Montana Homer Simpson Laughing GIF by FOX TV

10 games is a good sample size.  Maybe's he's had a few off games, but I think he still processes pretty well.  Curious to see how he finishes the year.

That being said, we never really brought anyone in from the outside when were we one of the winningest franchises with a HoF QB or with Luck.

You need a certain type of a personality to stay in Indy. Ballard has put an emphasis on that.

I'd certainly take less money to live in either of the coasts than Indiana as a professional athlete.

    As they say in property.

    Location location location!

You think Indy is more expensive than the coasts?  Seems off to me.

I understand the desire to see more blitzes, but I also understand the hesitancy. If we blitz Moore or a safety we’re just putting more pressure on the corners, and I don’t think it’s going to take them long to lose a guy for 6 or a really big gain at the very least. It’s hard enough for those guys to keep track of their receivers with help over the top. That’s a double edged sword and the cut on that backswing can be a real deep one.

I see what you are saying.  I we'll say if maybe the corners could just jam/disrupt the route, it would be helpful.  Here's to hoping we get that elite pass rusher next year.

I mean I can’t throw all the blame on Bradley. The pass rush is the %s. The corners at this point are the drizzling %s.

What exactly does anyone expect from that recipe?

When do we blame the GM who has used 6 picks on edge players in the first three rounds of drafts in the last 7 drafts and this is all the pass rush we’ve got to show for it? He swings and misses like laundry hanging out on the line on a windy day.

Maybe all of these problems we can’t seem to shake are a result of a cumulative issue…

I agree, Ballard has missed on DE, but we might have a QB, so hopefully he goes after an elite pass rusher.  I think Paye is the only DE he's picked in the first round,  and it was a late pick.  Also,  Bradley needs to blitz more.  I'd love to see some more corner blitzes and safety blitzes.

Yeah, my stance is not necessarily based on recent results. We came into the season intending to test out a bunch of young DBs, and now we're without at least three of them due to injury. The depth was always questionable at best, and now we know it's pretty bad. I don't know what the deal was with Darius Rush, but he's not contributing anywhere else so maybe he had a problem behind the scenes... Maybe he just can't handle it, but we shouldn't be in such bad shape that we're worried about a 5th round draft pick.

And yeah, put some of this on Ballard, for the state of the roster, specifically at corner.

I'm still wondering why Ballard seems to be so closely involved on the defensive side. It's supposed to be his vision on defense, and we hire DCs that fit that vision. But he leaves the offense to the HC, and that seems to be by design; he's "hired" three difference HCs, all of them offensive guys.

And I don't mind the baseline idea of this defensive scheme, but you have to be able to rush up front -- we're inconsistent, at best -- and you have to be sound in the back end. For as much as I don't like Bradley, we're having execution problems, not just scheme problems. Brown blew coverages, JuJu was blowing coverages (but had some playmaking ability), Baker was committing penalties... However, Bradley's staff is supposed to be known for coaching up the young guys, and they're not having success with that right now. Even if we DID like the scheme, we still have personnel and coaching problems.

Edit: Ballard also apparently came close to hiring Raheem Morris, who would have brought a different defensive philosophy. So I wonder...

I want a new D coach,  and that Iowa coach sounds intriguing, although I'm not sure if it translates to the NFL.  I will say we need an elite pass rusher (we currently have 2 edge setters), we need an LB who can cover (haven't had one since Okereke), and we need a solid corner.   That on D, a true Alpha number 1 WR on O, and we'd be set I think (if AR pans out).

The NFL trade deadline is notorious for being the least active in sports.  You don’t see selloffs like you do in baseball (dead cap hits prevent that) and you don’t see teams trying to get another star player to make a run like you do in the NBA or NHL because again of the salary cap.  It’s also always full of rumors that hardly ever happen.  Yes one in a while you’ll see a move like the 49ers made for McCarthy last year but that’s the exception.  You might see the Colts make a move at most two (and I say that’s highly unlikely) but that’s probably going to be it.  I don’t see them trading picks to try to add to this roster and I don’t see them selling players off either.  It’s going to take another team making an offer they can’t refuse to get a deal done and you just don’t see that much in the NFL.

    Jenny McCarthy? :p

There are about 5-6 young(ish) corners on some practice squads around the league that could be improvements over Baker and Brown. That could be an alternative to street free agents or massive trades!??!

Brown, btw, is in the same boat as Minshew. He is a career backup and special teamer for a reason. When a team can focus on him they can attack him easily.

Flowers, Brents and Jones are all young and pretty good. Unfortunately this year is a wash once AR5 went down. So Brents and Jones will just have to learn on the fly!

Jones actually held his own last game.   Didn't hear is name much.

  12. Good:  We scored 27.  Downs continues to impress.  Pierce made some nice grabs, one which was ruled incomplete.  He did slow down on a route though.  I don't recall hearing Jones's name much.  Ogletree!

Bad:  It's apparent we need an elite edge rusher, elite coverage LB, and elite CB.  However, if our starting CBs were healthy, I think we'd be OK on that front, but not great.  Really missing Big Grove.

Spot on. They are properly taking Leonard out on 3rd and long, unfortunately Zaire is also worthy of replacing. Zaire has value but reminds of Anthony Walker. Z makes more plays but also is often beaten by a step.

LB'S that can cover are special.

Yet we let Okereke, our only good coverage LB, go.....
