I always called Glow replaceable, and I stand by that. He got a nice contract from the Giants, but his play was pretty ugly in 2022. His spot should not be that hard to fill.

Fingers crossed that they prove me wrong. But French wasn't good in preseason last year, and he wasn't anything to write home about in preseason this year. It's not like he was a dominant college player. He's a guy you bring in, give a shot, and if he does well you celebrate. But if he doesn't do well, you move on, and here we are going into Week 1 with him as our primary backup interior OL.

I disagree that he wasn't good. Now, I admit, I never saw one practice, so I cannot comment on that, but considering he was an undrafted rookie last year, out of a smaller college program I thought he did rather well.  He did beat on a few snaps, during the preseason games, with at least one, I remember, resulting in a sack. But I use NFL+ subscription to rewatch the games. I usually focus on the o-line, since that area has been my biggest concern. And French did rather well at times, in fact, I thought he was one of our better linemen prospects. I was happy when the team didn't cut him last year, and assume they didn't want to risk him being snatched up by another club, so he stuck around on the roster all year. Now, due to Pinter's injury, he is now put in a much more important spot. I don't think he is the primary backup interior lineman, but rather the primary backup center. I know I would probably catch a lot of flack for this statement, but to be honest, at this point, I do not think it would take a very great player to replace Kelly.

I think the bolded is the key, and I hope he's right. But I also know we've seen a good deal of Pinter, French, Fries, etc., and none of them have looked like quality backups. They were meant to replace guys like Glowinski, Reed, etc., not a high bar, and they haven't even been able to clear that threshold. I would have wanted at least a solid veteran addition, and you can still bank on the development of some of these young guys.

And still, even if those guys are better, what if Nelson misses four games? What if Kelly can't bounce back? What if Smith is injured? Now we're betting on those young guys being ready to step up, and everything we've seen so far has indicated they're not good enough. Especially their play in preseason and joint practices.

But I remember well, on this very forum, how Glowinski was the "whipping boy" of the forum for years. Everybody was calling for him replaced at RG.

Then when he left during FA for a hefty contract to the Giants, he was suddenly sorely missed.

I see Wesley French as being treated the same way.

He struggled a bit in one or two of the preseason games last year, and everyone expected him to be cut, but I noticed he played well at times, and obviously the team did too, since they did not risk placing him on the practice squad, but rather the 53 man roster.

Then onto 2023, everyone wants Kelly to be traded, but the Colts give him the vote of confidence, and reassures him he is an important member of the team. In the preseason, after figuring out Danny Pinter is not the answer at guard, they return him, to his natural spot, as the back up center, and try moving French to G. French did struggle in the limited time I saw him at guard, but then, when Pinter got hurt, French did a fine job back at center.

I just think it's not fair to discount French as some bum, without ever seeing him play in a meaningful game. Perhaps you and the rest are right? and he will end up stinking, but with Ryan Kelly as the starter, one would think, it may only be a matter of time, before we see WF in that spot, to prove us right or wrong.

OL was our second biggest need going into the offseason. We signed no one in free agency. I expected a signing after the draft, but nothing. I hoped for someone at the start of camp, still blanks. We struggled at OL in camp and preseason, then lost probably our best backup to injury (and he's not even very good). And we still haven't done anything.

They are banking on several players being better this season than they were last season, and I hope that's exactly what happens. But it's not a great way to address one of the biggest needs on the team. And there were plenty of mid level OL who could have helped solidify the room, at the very least bring some competition for guys like French, Fries, Pinter, O'Donnell (who has never played in a game), etc. I wasn't expecting them to sign Mike McGlinchey, but they basically did nothing but draft a guy in the 4th round who probably isn't strong enough to play this year.

That's how Ballard has been handling this whole thing. I remember after the awful season had ended, Ballard took full responsibility for the line, he said something like "that is on me". So then he turns around, and what does he do? nothing. Seems to think the problem was a combination of injuries, coaching, conditioning, off year by some players, etc. So, I guess we have to wait and see? Perhaps by some miracle, the line will be a strength of the team once again? As I have said in other postings, Ballard will have to live and die with the roster he has assembled.

I had first thought, if the team struggles again this year, especially because of the o-line, then that would be the final straw and Ballard would be fired. But probably, even if that happens, he will be safe because of AR5 being a young rookie.

  5. Cowboys Shockingly Release Breakout Defender

The former Florida A&M standout had an absolutely dominant season in the MEAC in 2021 (19.5 sacks), but his disappointing 2022 led to his going undrafted, The 23-year-old is still a little undersized on the edge (6-foot-4 but only 215 pounds), and his preseason appearances proved he's not ready to compete at the NFL level yet.

He showed some nice pass-rush moves, but he had no solo tackles and as many missed tackles as he had assisted tackles (2 each) through his first two posteason games.

With his job on the line he had an underwhelming showing again with 1 tackle and 1 assist.

I know this is an unpopular pick with Cowboys fans, who largely want him to be a roster lock, but this is also a numbers game. He'd have to overtake Vellami Fehoko (a fourth-round pick) or Dante Fowler for the final spot on the depth chart, and I just don't think he's quite far along enough to do that.

Land is an obvious practice squad pick, and hopefully adding some size and strength helps him reach his full potential as a viable edge defender in the pros.

Report: Packers were in the hunt for Jonathan Taylor

...The fact that the Packers were even in the conversation is surprising. They have Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon. Would one of them have been shipped to the Colts for Taylor? Presumably, yes.

The Packers could still get back into the conversation, between now and October 31, when the window closes on any and all potential trades for the 2023 season...

Bears Claim 3 Players Off Waivers From Their Top Waiver Spot

The Chicago Bears led off the day with three waiver claims, claiming DE Khalid Kareem from the Indianapolis Colts, DB Quindell Johnson from the Los Angeles Rams, and WR Trent Taylor from the Cincinnati Bengals.

I believe the Bears were the first to pick? So that makes Kareem the first player chosen.

Obviously, Eberflus saw what I saw.
