  1. Mathis played decent in this D for the 12 games he suited up. 33 tackles and 8 sacks. He definitely can still run, but I would say he is average at best Against the run. JMO.

Again, I would rather put the money on someone younger, as his body has a lot of wear and I have a hard time seeing his production being anything special going forward.

And again, a 3rd rd pick in this draft should deliver a good starter going forward. Yes I have doubts we could get a 3rd.

As next season is just another of several long steps this roster will take to get a bunch of New starters on it, I don`t see an "Older" Mathis making much of a difference over the Next Man Up during the remainder of his Well Paid contract.

I would have to go with Freeman as our best defender, and Vontae number two. Mathis, Redding, and Bethea were all decent, and just a Bunch of real Mediocrity after that.

Im sorry, all i heard was "blah blah blah"

  2. Because I feel some people are losing track of the human element in this matter. Officials aren't omnipotent. There are only a few of them, charged with watching 22 men at full speed. Things get missed.

Also, historically, the SB witnesses fewer penalties (by far) on average compared to regular season or play-off games. How much experience one has as a fan may be cause for a lack of perspective.

LOL, this whole "experienced fan" thing is irrelevant I feel, when we are talking about 2012-2013 rules in the 2012-2013 playoffs & SB, but alright.

Like I said before, just let the grown men play, like men.  Swallow the whistles and hold the flags a little more so these athletes just learn to play through it, and not look to get bailed out over everything. that would be ideal, won't happen, I get it, but as a passionate fan of the game that would be awesome.

  3. There never has been consistency. Human error is part of the game. It happens. Though in my opinion is human error wasn't part of this issue.

How many of you young folks actually remember the NFL pre-instant replay?

Some of this contorting is laughable.

very true, def respect that.  Let me start by saying:

I respect your opinion.  I am 25 years old so nope, I've always had the luxury of instant replay, you've got me there.

But... I just wish they would let them "Play".  No specific game or individual play, just feel both NBA and NFL are pretty soft (Head injuries, legal/illegal hits aside for another day) although, you can EASILY argue yesterday was a pretty badly officiated game.

All the rules and definitions of those rules have me confused, I think they confuse themselves as well to be honest... I've officiated Pop-Warner & Freshmen HS football games, so I'll be the first to admit I made mistakes, so not trying to knock the refs, just wish they would let em play... that's all I'm saying.

You know???? so it can possibly get to the point where (It will never happen) us as men, or women, who love us some football can watch a play like that last play of the game yesterday, orrrrr even go back two weeks to the similar type of conflict between Niners-Falcons on the play where everyone thought Bowman held/interfered with White to send the NIners to the bowl, and say "oh man that was a good, PHYSICAL play" without looking for a flag or foul (NBA) on everythinggggggggggggg....

Now, can you explain to me how being old enough to be around pre-instant replay has ANYTHING to do with this lol???.... must have lost you with all the 'contorting' going on.

  4. I wouldn't call that an iffy call.  It seemed like a pretty clear example of holding.  However, I think it's more important for the refs to be consistent than it is for them to follow the rule to the letter and they were letting those plays go all night.

It's a little unfortunate and Harbaugh is technically right... but there are routinely much worse calls and non-calls made in the NFL.  This one was at least understandable.

exactly how I feel... no consistency anymore in NBA or NFL and it's insane

  5. See, I knew we had two, he said we had one, and lost superbowl 3, I told him about superbowl 5 and he started getting super hostile! Very wierd moment, the last fight I been in was in highschool, this feels like a dream or something, like did this realy happen?

yeah man I feel you... when someone is gonna get mad over pro sports, its like really.. im 25 years old Im not perfect ive been in many dumb situations over dumb things, IM NOT PERFECT... but as i get older I realize the Colts, Lakers, LA Kings or whoever else I root for aren't paying my bills, we pay their salary, and with how SHADY pro sports have always been, and even more so than ever today (personal opinion) ill be darned if I let them affect my physical health anymore.. flipping out or getting all emo over a win/loss... I will always ride for my teams but there is a line..

and with that said, I really wish you would have just slept and stomped dude once or twice.. sometimes a whooping is the only thing that makes people grow up and stop acting stupid, as cruel as that sounds.. what an iiii*... glad nothing crazy happened my man

  6. Yes and no, It depends on your perspective, as is the case with most stats/numbers, information is only as useful as you make it. Sure 11-5 is fantastic but that's a reflection of the entire Team's performance (including the coaching/front office). Some would also argue we're one of the "worst" 11-5 teams ever, and when you look at some of the team numbers it's a minor miracle that we made 11-5. Though these are somewhat skewed by the blowouts.

If you are talking specifically about Luck then you have to delve into his own numbers. The point though that is being made in the article that by traditional QB metrics (which are so outdated in the modern game!), he doesn't look all that. Those who've watched him every game will beg to differ and point to that word of the moment, his intangibles, by definition something you can't measure.

What will be interesting is to see how they change next season, they will give some of indicator of progress. Especially if we're running a WCO then you'd hope to see completion % shoot up and the number of picks fall as he attempts shorter less risky throws.

    lol..

  7. Attacking the ball carrier outright is not a good strategy against the zone read. The DE or OLB HAS to stay disciplined on the edge keep his lane or its going to be a good gain on the play. The play is designed to leave the edge contain unblocked so that they will overplay and be out of position to contain either the handoff or the QB.

The best way to stop the zone read is like any other running play...penetration and assignment. If you get into the backfield you'll disrupt the play. If you maintain your lanes and assignments you have a good chance of minimizing the success of the play.

The zone read is an effective play and I think it has a place in the NFL in spots. I do think eventually NFL defenses will adapt as they see and prepare for it more.

I think the big reason it cant be a staple is like someone above mentioned....I just dont think a QB will survive in the NFL running it.

    GREAT points...
