  1. Well from what I have been able to gather from reading this board and the people who think Walden is worth every penny his job is to set the edge.  And those people claim that he is very good at setting the edge.  Now, by watching his play I have concluded that setting the edge means engaging a blocker as the running back runs right past the set edge adn then turning and chasing at half speed.  Now I played and coached for a lot of years and I have never had a position description like that, but all these newfangeled NFL defenses have so many specialty type positions that I can't keep up.

I think he's been doing a good job.  I'm not going to give anyone a hard time on here about the whole motor thing and wanting to see him going 100% to the whistle, but it's a totally different ball game.  I'd love nothing more than to have this defense on the same page where they understand they have the athleticism and speed where if they rally to the ball, they will be amazing, but I just feel like that's High School or College stuff...  and I'm not saying it, like, it's me personally against it, but I believe the whole "hustle" thing is a joke in pro sports.  For example, we (announcers, fans, sports anchors, etc. etc.) celebrate the guys who basically do hustle all out , and it's like "are you serious??? they ALL should be going all out, all the time, making that kind of money, living the life and doing 'what they love!'" pshh lol. so in that sense I just think we are expecting too much, but just had to ramble about it for a moment.  but I do feel he is going all out until the play is basically over, and at the point running towards a pile with men all around on the ground, as the runner is pretty much done is like meh.. no issue with that, here personally, but I def understand you guys.

and as far as setting the edge and his responsibility, none of us know, but just from being told to basically contain/set edge when I played just wanna share a little from my experience.

I played the "Rover" position, so I was either SS or OLB depending on the formation, obviously.  And depending on the action of the play & what the linemen were doing off the snap we were setup so that on certain plays (and both were from OLB position):

I would fill from the outside-in (between the D Tackle and Defensive End and basically be there for the tackle, a lot of time I was just free, 1 on 1 with the runner, because everyone basically did their responsibility to roam through untouched, but if they had someone pulling or leading the way through, I HAD to make sure I took them on with my inside shoulder, "keeping my outside arm free" (is how they would describe it) and make sure it is turned back inside at all costs, nothing gets outside... and if they did take off for a nice gainer up the middle I clearly remember, after being like uh-oh... I'd never get yelled at because the main job of me and the DE was to contain (once it was clear i wasn't option 1 on the tackle, and lets remember it all happens SO FAST), while the Nose and DT wrecked everything inside as best as they could to keep blockers off of the MLB's so they could clean up.

Or, they would just have me set the edge like Walden on that clip/gif or whatever it is.  Either way I just remember being told that on run plays, I let nothing outside of me, I do feel that a HUGE difference (and again, it's different levels, it doesn't compare) was that we had 2 stud MLB's who were capable of cleaning up, and everyone had their share of tackles, but it just worked really well together.  So not excusing Walden, i'd like to see him blow it up too,  but I do agree with a poster above that it's not all about him even being around the ball or making the tackles and racking up his stats, and aggressiveness is something that can be a killer when youre trying to dictate where you want to or don't want to allow offense guys running around at... Cuz I just feel like if Sheppard makes that tackle for a few yard gain then its like, even with Walden being lost off the snap, he diagnoses whats going on and does what he needs to do.

I don't know, I'm rambling, because I'm curious too but I just don't think he is that bad, and when I hear about him being an edge setter I always think back to the responsibilty I had and like I said it happens so fast, but watching him basically slow play whats going on then react, I don't think he is as terrible as people are making him out to seem..

  2. Is it just me or does it seem like we made a mistake by picking him?

I admit I didn't like the pick and I'm still not sold on it..

To me he just seems slow and lost out there.. I know he's a rookie and he's still learning but I'm not totally sold on Werner ever being a very good pass rusher.

I'll give him a chance of course.. I really hope he proves me wrong.

I was really hoping we drafted DeAndre Hopkins.. I was so upset when Houston got him.

It might be just you, I'm digging the kid

  3. Nos-man;

Dont tell anybody but the 'we' deal was just to get you to respond......

I didn't like giving up a No.1 for TRich and I wanted folks to defend the gamble...

Its a debating trick. When you tell someone what they said...or what you claim they said

..and lump them in with the majority (which did indeed say you never draft a RB No.1) which DID say that..

....folks almost have no choice but to engage you and then

.....you get a chance to really debate the deal....a chance you don't get if you don't call 'em out

To me, the whole idea of being on this board is to root for the Colts and to debate issues..

You can root 24-7 but to debate points, you have to get people to seriously engage..which requires you to tell them THEY are wrong

"I KNOW I'm right" and I want to hear why you "KNOW you're right"...you know what I mean..?

If you notice. I never talk about the person I'm talking to....I dont know 'em...and we're all Colts fans (except for a few of the Houston freaks)

. I only counter the argument...again and again....as many times as they will..

And if you don't say anything you don't truly believe, you always have a counter

That's debating.....and the more folks engage..the more I like it

That's why I love this board and post a lot...folks aren't unwilling to debate hard...(with a little prompting)

I don't mind getting a hard time for my opinion because. I like to argue. We all do.

definitely, I feel you... and people will feel the need like they HAVE to respond to what's being said, to defend themselves... and that's not the case with you.  I respect it.

  4. This may come as a bit of a shock to you those were the only truly great runs he had all YEAR... 3 great runs and he played in 15 games that's what your getting if that makes you happy then so be it, I had much higher expectations but perhaps your more reasonable then me...?????

Enjoy him be happy and support your players, but grade them based on performance and 950 yards in 15 games is not so great, but your happy I wish you the best, and clearly you'll be happy but the bottom line is the results he produces and that was lacking, it really was something tells me your hoping he makes it against what he has already proven which is that he isn't very good.

But lets break this down 950 divided by 15 = 64 yards per game and that makes you happy, OTTA.......................You got your man then.......

He will have good games at times he has talent but you will see he lacks field vision and coaching won't be able to fix that..........................

    thanks coach!

  5. Fair enough. It is hard to make sense of every argument on this board at times and I misunderstood what you meant. It was because the post above the one I quoted, led me in that direction.

Carry on with the arguing. :)

lol I've been rough on here these past two weeks because of the reactions to the games and the trade, and that's not alright.  So i'll mellow out a bit.

and with that said, back to what really matters... GO COLTS!!!!  I can't wait til tomorrow

  6. Talking about me? If so, wrong on numerous levels.

I've been here for two years and I've yet to start a single thread. If I ever do, it certainly won't be to express an opinion that has already been expressed a couple of hundred times in other current threads. My opinion on the trade had nothing to do with my response here. Normally I just ask the mods to merge threads like this, but this has happened so many times since the trade that I gave in to the temptation to speak out.

Regarding the trade itself, I'm largely conflicted. I'm concerned that this suggests a lack of patience from Irsay projected through Grigson. It reminds me of when Irsay was GM, and that's literally nauseating. It feels like a "win now" mentality which I don't think is justified. I don't like trading draft picks at all, particularly one which I had assumed would be used to select Reggie's replacement or a stud lineman - each far more significant needs than RB.

On the other hand, I'm not qualified to judge Richardson's ability, I've never even watched him play. He's a Colt now, and the thought that he might be something special is genuinely exiting. Not much choice now but to watch and hope. The trade is a huge gamble that's going to define the Colts management far more than anything we've seen so far. In other words, it makes me very uncomfortable, and think that the guy has to play like Lynch for about the next eight years for the trade to be considered a success,  but I'm willing to entertain the possibility that he might, and I hope to find out that the FO knows what they are doing.

nooooooo.. not even lol.. just in general ur always good Mac

  7. And the explanation is?

I meant the whole WE thing like don't classify us all together.. (going back on a topic oldunclemark posted about WE said WE should never take a rb in rd1, ever..)

as for everything else I just like hassling the people who feel so entitled on this board like we need to take what they say like it's the deepest thing any man or woman has ever said, but like to give people a hard time for their opinions and when they get stumped, will pull the "it's a discussion board...." acting all oblivious like they didn't just rip someone a new one for what they had to say

It's right up there with the "it's a discussion board and everyone has their opinion, and we want to hear them but the second it gets juicy and people REALLY start to disagree and bicker, even if their is nothing disrespectful being said, we are shutting the whole topic down" that the mods do.

lol it's wrong, and childish I know, but I can't help it BlueShoe!!!

  8. BlueShoe, read the rest of the comments please.. I realized that after it was pointed out to me and apologized. I will apologize again, as you are correct. Someone put it in a much better way a few comments back.. it's not how many that are against it, it just seemed like a lot because of how loud those that are against it are. I apologize again.. you are absolutely correct.

    don't apologizeeee!!!!!!! haha

  9. I apologize, you're right.. there have been a lot of people happy about it and more than likely, a majority.. I just have seen so many negative comments as well and I guess I let those overshadow the positive ones. My apologies and also my apologies for creating a new thread.

dont apologize... the same people who say stuff like that are the same ones who say "gee i dont see what the big is, it is a message board" when everyone has a different opinion than theirs when they create a thread themselves.

but if it's not reflecting their opinion they are so quick to voice their displeasure

  10. He was overrated in college, and Cle was fortunate to find 1 team that was dumb enough to give them the pick they wasted back. If he ends up being better than Cedric Benson and Ronnie Brown I'd be shocked. Just the truth. Grigson should've started to rebuild this oline with a stud LT in the draft.I would've been against it if he traded away a 2, but the 1 is why why I hate it. Then people will say he went 3rd overall. So what. He's not better than Doug Martin.

"he was overrated in college..." ok sports fan!!!

    I'll never understand it

I played with and against some guys in the NFL now and there's no way you will ever find me dogging a dude who has made it when I didn't..  get out there and go do it yourself if he is/was so overrated

    .

  11. I swear everyone on here claims to be colts fans but all I see is complaining and complaining

I'm with you.. Don't listen to em these people on here are a joke..

They need lives... I love being passionate about my team and fans should be, but it's not that serious where u should be a cry baby ..

And my favorite is the "I don't want...." Like anyone really cares who they want or don't want on the team..

  12. Wah wah wah...

I really hope all of you who are basically saying we stand no chance won't watch the game on Sunday.. I mean what's the point since you already know we are going to lose.

It would save us from your cry baby threads if we do lose, and you're back tracking "ohhhh I actually had a feeling we were going to win" posts if we do win.

No appreciation for the sport, straight up.
