  1. I saw a couple people before the season started saying the 49ers might be in for a long season. How they used a lot of 2 TE formations to dictate favorable matchups for Kaep and how they shouldn't have let Delanie Walker go. Might have been a little more truth to that than I originally thought.

I wasn't sure today if I was overestimating the 49ers offense or underestimating the Colts' defense.

  2. A couple points quick - Seattle was able to shut it down because Sherman was able to take Boldin out of the game single handedly and Seattle played 8 or 9 in the box a lot of times and got after them. Indy doesn't have the personnel to do that imo...and neither did Green Bay.

As to Gavin's point, the read player can really be anybody. See what Philly did to Washington in the opener. London Fletcher was the read player much of the time and he was a MLB not even assigned to the QB. The "option" in that play was either McCoy or Celek on the pass depending on what Fletcher did. In those cases, the blocking scheme took care of the DE or LB. Its essentially packaged plays that you determine after the snap where to go with the ball, and its based off what a particular defender does - not always just the DE or LB, and the options aren't always just the RB or QB...bubble screens, seam routes, various runs...all those can be in it. Its basically just play-action but it could still be a run play. The basic idea is to put the read player in a situation where no matter what he decides, he's wrong.

there were a couple threads a few weeks back here about defending the RO and what you have to sacrifice to do it.

  3. I didn't read every post in this thread, but more than half, so maybe this has been stated...

The concerns around the OL giving Trent holes etc is valid, though the run blocking hasn't been all that bad this year anyway. What I didn't see mentioned though is how Trent's presence will effect pass blocking; and I don't mean Trent's ability to pass block. If over the first game or two, Trent shows himself to be a threat that you have to account for, it may effect how DLs attack the Colts' line.

I haven't looked closely yet on how defensive lines are playing the colts this year with Pep's playcalling tendencies etc still being developed, but its something I might keep an eye on now.

I hope Trent finds success; wished he could have in Cleveland....but not to be.

  4. I'm with those that say wait and see. But really, even if he doesn't become as good, that doesn't mean he won't be among the best to play the game. Manning is on a different level than most, so by no means would I consider it a failure if he didn't quite reach that same level as far as reading defenses. Luck has other traits over Manning though like some said; athleticism being one. I said here weeks back that I compare Luck more to a Steve Young type of player than Peyton Manning. Both are considered some of the all-time greats. Not bad company to be in by the end of your career no matter how you get there. Hey may even have some Brett Favre in him....time will tell. As for the photographic memory etc - there have been quite a few duds to come along who had those types of mental capacities, but the question is how quickly can you diagnose, recall, and apply on the fly? I can walk around with a dictionary all day but if it takes me 20 minutes to find a word, what good is it really doing?

But, when its all said and done, I think he'll be regarded at minimum as one of the best of this generation - the 2010s and granting health, the 2020s. Best case you lump him in with the Mannings, Marinos, Montanas, etc in the "all time" debate.

  5. Why not just run onto the field like everyone else? There are far more decorated NFL players on the redskins that did just that

weak logic...why not hand the ball off to the ref after a TD like Barry Sanders? Why play to the crowd and do a dance or jump in the stands? Nothing wrong with a little showmanship; hard not to play to a crowd that was rabid about you since the day you got drafted. Says nothing about him as a teammate.

  6. did favre ask the Vikings brass to fly down there? Did he have a video crew follow him around during his release from the packers? Did he do more press conferences than any head coach he had?

and it is anything but being a team player when you do things to draw attention too yourself and not your teammates

    woe is the misinformed...

Griffin didn't go door to door begging for endorsements; the Gatorade documentary was originally supposed to be about a few players and they had actually started filming (Luck as well and I think Wilson too), but then they decided to just make it about Griffin's rehab; all press conferences with the exception of 1 were league or team mandated

  7. I don't doubt the knee is physically fine - more often than not, the actual physical healing doesn't take nearly as long as the mental recovery and regaining the trust in your body. Plenty of studies and research articles written on that stuff if anyone is inclined to look for it. Because of that, I don't agree with the assessment that he was rushed back, especially given the heat and scrutiny the entire team took for what happened at the end of last season.

But yes, there is most certainly a mental hurdle he has yet to overcome; it took Peterson a good month into the season before he looked normal again. Brady didn't look fully back to his old self for a whole season after returning. It largely depends on the player.

As for Cousins vs Griffin, yeah Kirk is a more polished pocket passer - this isn't news to anyone. Griffin was drafted on potential and they supposedly have a plan for his development. Not going to be an overnight process by any means. My question instead is why they're running the type of offense they're running right now? Hardly any boots, rollouts, or moving pockets...Griffin is sitting back behind a very suspect line (yes I think the line is very suspect in a traditional dropback offense) taking some good hits. Night and day difference in play calling and scheme.

    but eh...just my observations.

  8. The character concerns between Leaf and Manziel are not close at all. Also I don't see any character flags at all with Manziel. He may have made some bad judgements but nothing speaking to his character. NCAA had nothing on him. Worst he has done is get kicked out of a Texas frat party.

not comparing them at all; I got the impression from posts above that some people didn't know about the Leaf warning signs. Just clarifying.

but while we're on it, there are flags on Manziel too, but they're so minor right now. And flag may not even be the right word, but possible indicators - just things to keep an eye on for now.

  9. Isn't it funny how all the talking heads are now in the Luck camp ? One good game by Luck and a bad opening game performance by RG3 and now it's 90% Luck and 10% Colin Kap. and RG is not even in the discussion these days. I do realize that RG3 was hurt but Washington was running that QB killing offense when the talking heads were backing RB3.. no ?

Just because there was hype around the guys like Wilson, Kaep, and Griff doesn't mean that most reputable analysts didn't think Luck was the best of the group. You ask most of them, and that was probably always the case. The other guys made news because no one knew what to expect from them coming into the season. Luck was about as much of a given as you can have. Maybe not the most flashy or sexy QB, but for sure the safest and most pro-ready.

  10. I'm not sure he has the arm to make all the throws he needs to make. At this point I think his ceiling is a Chad Pennington type with some mobility. Chad could read a defense and everything though - Smith still has to develop there obviously.
