  1. I've always like Hoge too...even as a player :) That being said, I still do have concerns about the OL here and defense as a whole. I'm curious to see how Mathis and Freeney fare at OLB over the course of a whole season - DE to OLB transition is kind of hit and miss, but I hope it works out. I have this team going somewhere around 6-10. No #1 QB has ever finished above .500 in their first season, so while 9-7 may seem attainable, history is against it. There's a first for everything though, right? Helps a little playing in the AFC South. Jacksonville is....well Jacksonville. I'm not really sold on Locker and the Titans. The Texans are still pretty formidable though.

  2. People ask where the downside is? I'm half tempted to ask what the upside is. You sacrifice a valuable roster spot that could go to a young talent who has the potential to contribute both now and later in exchange for an older likely-to-be-injured player who will be long gone before the team is back in serious contention. Say Bob Sanders stays healthy all year and even makes the pro-bowl this year as the starting SS. What do you really gain? Unless that was enough to push the team over the top, there's just no sense in it long term.

  3. Polian was long gone by the time the Manning was released. Polian was fired the day after the season while Manning wasn't released till we had too. I can tell you my friend did say that ONE of the sticking points was Polian wanting to trade the Luck pick and Irsay wanting the Luck pick. Again in his perfect little world irsay wanted both guys. Polian wanted to reload make one more run with Manning and retire when Manning wrapped up pretty much leaving us in a rebuilding phase as he walked out the door not really caring about the future. Irsay didn't want that for the team and looking at recent poor events pulled the plug on the Polian. Again if people want to challenge this they can they don't have to believe me.

Ok, so then the whole Luck/RG3 debate probably never happened then - unless it was something that flared up over the course of conversations during the season. I forgot how soon Polian was out.

  4. I have a friend who would know about the situation and if people don't believe this that's fine but he told me Polian wanted to keep Manning and trade the pick to get more talent to rebuild around Manning and have one more run. Same person told me Irsay wanted Luck all along but in his perfect world he wanted Manning and Luck but as we saw was more married to Luck than Manning.

That's similar to what I had heard. After the decision to cut ties with Manning, the RG3/Luck debate happened. I knew Irsay and Luck was a done deal all along. As for whether or not Polian and Irsay actually butted heads over Luck/RG3 after Manning was released, I can't say for certain and your friend is probably a more credible source than my fuzzy memory.

Either way, I think the way it worked out is actually best long term.

  5. As long as we agree that the lack of a viable backup QB as the sole reason for him being fired excuse is a crock.

Actually one thing I did hear (don't remember where any more) was that he and Irsay butted heads over Luck/RG3/Manning decision. Although, I have absolutely no idea if there is any truth to that. However, even if that debate did happen, I'm sure his fate was already sealed before that.

  6. What I like is that the accumalitive affect this has on the defense. Not only is it an upgrade at corner but it also means it upgrades our nickle coverage by shifting over the next best corner (who lets be real none of them have shown we should be starting opposite Powers).

Not necessarily - it isn't as simple as the #2 CB just becoming the nickle - different skill sets required. The nickle you have now may very well be the same guy when Davis slides in. Just like there isn't always a defined #1 and #2 CB...sometimes its based on Left and Right, depending on scheme. Same can be said for WRs...Flanker, Slot, Split End, etc...Its not a Madden depth chart.

But yes, it does help the secondary obviously by replacing a lesser talent at whatever position they put Davis in. And being a versatile athlete means he can probably fill more roles.

  7. BTW, I hope Polian stop telling everyone that he was fired from the Colts solely because we did not have a viable backup QB to replace Manning.

He's already said it was more than just that. As for him sticking to his guns and letting guys slide past, you can't say how they would have performed here or how it would have turned out, so its all just speculation.

  8. I watched the first episode of hardknocks...now i am about to watch the crap out of that. see what kind of info they spill on davis. I think it was more the coaching staff.

FYI, Davis was showing signs of trouble before Philbin and co. took over.

  9. 5 time exec of the year.....no argument...winding toward possible retirement.....

I wonder if LEAF had used Manning's line..."If you don't pick me I will come hear and beat you for 15 years..." would it have been Leaf?......that part of the tree fell long ago... :)

yeah I agree :) I enjoy when he's on NFL radio too - lots of good insight about front office workings. Leaf's interview was something about going to Vegas with his signing bonus. Supposedly the Colts' scouts favored Leaf while Polian and the coaching staff wanted Manning, but I'm not sure I buy into that....unless the scouts never actually talked to Leaf for any extended period.
  10. Given the fact that this team is in the process of rebuilding (or whatever word you want to put on it), I don't know that he (or myself for that matter) would have given up a 2nd round pick for Davis. Tons of physical talent but I think I would have dropped out of the bidding at a 3rd. Its hard to say though what was going on behind closed doors or what other teams were in the running. Grigson apparently believes the risk is worth the potential return. That puts it on the coaching staff and teammates to help him along. I think getting out of Miami will be a plus. If he does continue to get into trouble, just hope its not to the level of what Dez Bryant and the Cowboys agreed to.

In the end, I think it will work out ok and he'll become a solid starter. I just don't foresee Davis becoming a top 5 CB at this time.

  11. Ouch...little bit of bad news there. Not a good outcome for a preseason game (or any for that matter). Bit of a hit to depth. The field was in some pretty bad shape too - they had hosted a soccer game and a concert prior to that, then rain. Skins didn't really suffer any injuries, so not sure how much can be attributed to the field or just to bad luck.

  12. He did not seem to be 'going after it' because he was cognizant Reggie and others were there....did not get up as high as he should have....maybe I am wrong....

Reminds me of a basketball player going for a dunk...missing...and holding onto the rim to keep from landing on it...just the way I saw it...not being critical...want Adams to do well....big receiver.

no worries - I just attributed it more to the hit from Jackson personally. Either way, it looks like the WR group could shape up nicely. Would like to see Avery come out too after falling off a little bit in St Louis (not totally his fault). As for Collie...unfortunate and just hope he's ok even if he doesn't play again.

  13. Honestly...if Reggie was not in the way that was a TD....Adams is our tallest receiver...6'3 or 4' Too lazy to look.... :)

Actually Adams didn't even touch Reggie till he hit the ground and the ball was free. Adams had his hands on it, then Williams cut his legs and Jackson came over the top and finished him off. If anything, Wayne being there helped because he drew Fletcher out of the play as Adams trailed behind.

  14. I like the trade, I just worry about the things that made Davis fall out of favor in Miami following him here....

Too much crap to get into in Miami - some of the issues surrounding Davis were off the field from what I've always heard (partying, staying out late on game days, etc). Indianapolis might be the place for him - small market, stable ownership, and a team on the rise with a great young QB.

  15. Can't base anything on pure physical talent (re: Ryan Leaf, Andre Wadsworth, Tony Mandarich, and countless others who had the "talent" to succeed). Like John Madden would say, half this game is 90% mental. I'm more inclined to think that Vontae got a little too comfortable after a fairly successful rookie season. Maybe its him, maybe its the atmosphere of the entire Dolphin's organization, but either way Davis needs to get his head straight and start fresh.

  16. Al Toon was pretty good and Ken O-Brien was an above average QB chucking him the rock. The defenses in the AFC East at that time weren't the highest quality either and probably helped his stats. Rice wasn't the fastest guy either but had hands and ran good routes, the same compliments Toon got. Its hard to say really just how good Toon could have been minus the concussions. Keep him mind too that while O'Brien was a good QB, he was no Montana or Young. Toon was the Jets only real constant receiving threat for half of his career there - Wesley Walker retired in '89.

  17. personally don't see this as a comparison of the two QBs....schemes aren't going to be what we'll see during the regular season for offense or defense, and I don't see the skins drastically changing anything they did the last two weeks and RG3 suddenly airing it out 35 times. Eh...maybe I'm wrong though - that first pass was a deep one. I think Luck will look pretty good though and the colts should win. I'm guessing something like 31-24.
