  1. I'm 99% sure the schedules are set before the seeding is finalized, but as to method of determining or if its completely random, I couldn't say.

    ----edit

I'm trying to remember... I'm fairly certain I've seen schedules in the past where the teams listed were "TBD" or they just had the seed number, but still had a date and time in place. However, I'm not finding anything online, so maybe it was my imagination, or perhaps they do it differently now (kinda like how they now have flex scheduling).

  2. Shannahan has come along way from the superbowl winning coach in Denver.  I'm not saying he's a bad coach, but he certainly hasn't done his legacy any favors over the past 3 years.  The real problem is Snyder, yes.  But Shanahan and RGIII don't leave the situation with clean hands either.

yeah pretty much....when you have cage full of monkeys throwing poo, everyone ends up smelling like crap

dysfunction at its finest - tis the norm apparently

  3. this ought to be an interesting last few weeks. Going to be a lot of blame shifting from all sides I would imagine.

It is true though that Snyder likes to get close to his star players. Shawn Springs who played for both the Patriots and Redskins said that even the Brady-Kraft relationship wasn't what it was between Snyder and Portis. Hard to establish any kind of consistent authority when the owner undermines you.

eh...we'll see how it plays I guess. Heard a couple rumors that he could get fired today, but I personally think it wouldn't be till the season is over. Question is, if the report is true, what reputable coach would want to go there?

  4. Well last year the hyperbole was that RG3 was as good of a passer as Peyton Manning AND he was as mobile as Mike Vick. How the Pistol was the future of this sport and RG3 and Kap were revolutionizing the game.

Fast forward to this year, and people are questioning if Griffin should be benched.

    Facinating stuff lol.

haha....one extreme to the other :) Most reasonable fans fall in the middle somewhere though - discount the blind homers/haters. Exposure when you're hot (last year) and exposure when you're cold (3-8 so far) highlight the good and the bad respectively and force it down our throats. For example, last year, Griffin was a good, honest interview, had a healthy ego, and was a good leader, now its just the opposite. Griffin himself hasn't really changed (at least according to those that deal with him on a regular basis), but the context has.

  5. ...we want to crown guys or label them as busts after every game.

yup. I said when he was drafted that I wouldn't make any real judgement for at least 3 years. Way too many other variables in play. I still stand by his potential though, which is the word I've been using with him the whole time. Not a finished product by any means.

  6. THe Redskins are just an awful team. Period.

This was what I was trying to tell people here last year too (not you specifically) when people were saying how great of a team he had around him and how good his offensive line was when in actuality it was the scheme and a healthy QB that masked all of these deficiencies. Now that defenses have adjusted and play more disciplined, its time for Griffin to develop the other aspect of his game and the rest of the deficiencies on the team are now in the spotlight. So he's got to take his lumps that a QB normally takes in their rookie year with minimal help around him (outside of Morris/Garcon).

  7. I seriously doubt they fail to understand whose responsibility is whose on delays and stunts. It's really not that hard. Miscommunications and things like that are pretty easy to figure out who was at fault.

Good defenders understand that zone coverage is flexible depending on personnel and what the personnel does.

There are plenty of times where you can look at a line and think they did what they were supposed, for example if a center doubles down on the wrong DT, the guard attacks the other DT's outside shoulder and gets beat in the A gap. On film that's going against the guard when its really the center's fault. No way to see that on film unless you know the exact call. If you go hard and don't hesitate, on film its even going to look like you knew what you were doing even if you were wrong and left someone else out to dry...unless the person viewing the film knew the call.

As for zone, you have to trust your other men to do their job. In cover three, the CBs main responsibility is deep before shallow. Sure he can hit the receiver, but it shouldn't be on him to cover up for teammate's mistakes (let alone take the blame), especially if they're running a corner route behind him. Say the CB does cover for the LB, then the deep middle safety gives up the corner route behind him - now the safety is getting dinged for giving up a catch and it all stemmed from a LB not getting to his spot. Lots of things happen as the play unfolds and unless you know the coverage and what was called, it can get pretty hairy. It isn't like Madden where its all neat and tidy and cut and dry, where cover 2 is cover 2 no matter what. They put variations and emphasis on different things each weak tailored to their opponents. PFF doesn't know any of that stuff.

plenty of examples and often times its not so obvious.

  8. Meh, you can only look at the film and assume everyone is in the correct position. Id venture to guess that lineman blockig the wrong player doesn't happen much. Maybe ~20 times a season to be generous.

All I know is that 33% of teams in the NFL pay for their stats and scouting reports so im under the assumption that 1/3 of NFL GMs think these guys know what they are doing to at least consult them.

as a whole, they're good for helping to determine trends and tendencies and things like that. But when it comes to individual assessments, sometimes its pretty lacking. It isn't just blocking wrong players though. For example, twists and stunts, delayed blitzes, things like that often get credited to the wrong players. Same with pass coverage...if a LB bits on a play fake and a shallow sideline pass is caught on a CB playing in a cover 3, they like to ding the CB on that because he was the closest player. Like I said though, the only ones that really know are the people who called the plays to begin with and are reviewing the film each week. Those are the voices I listen to the most on the rare occasion the speak. I've seen enough in my own opinion to not look too closely when PFF tries to rank players or units at certain positions, especially if they don't know the play calls or what a players responsibility is at any given time. That's just me though.

  9. Disagree. PFFs oline ranking are the most accurate out there.

not exactly a high bar :) Film don't lie, but when you don't know protection schemes and responsibilities, kinda makes the metric a little silly as a whole. Sure you can use it as a rough indicator, but even then there's some very questionable ratings in there. I used to look at them quite a bit a couple years ago but the more I saw the further disenchanted I grew with them. Then to hear Gil Brandt's comments on the matter just confirmed my previous suspicions. You're right though, its no worse than anything else out there, but only because the people who really know don't put the info out.

  10. Just quoting what Hassleback said.

    yeah no worries - I figured :)

side note on the protection...whether or not Griffin called the wrong one, it didn't even look like all 5 linemen were on the same page anyway...a whole lot of things went wrong up front and Griffin was pressured fairly quickly. Even with all that, the decision to try and throw that ball was bad...many safer throw-aways he could have made there.

  11. Tim Hassleback said Rou Helu was wide open on that play for the first down but hey if the QB said they couldn't get open they must not have been open

inaccurate - Griffin looked to Helu before coming off him but he was covered. He didn't break open until the ball was thrown.

  12. Tell me about it. At least they have three wins. :dunno:

yeah an offseason of rehab for your QB and not being able to practice with the rest of the team will really stunt your growth as an offense :) Eh...barring anything unexpected, next year will tell a lot for Griff's future in terms of how much work he puts in this offseason and what kind of strides he can make. This season has been about growing pains and maturation as much as anything.

  13. Santana Moss is just bitter that the team is underperforming again. Hopefully this doesn't become a recurring problem or he'll get the diva receiva tag that the NFC East is so familiar with.

nah Moss has proven to be pretty low maintenance

When he made those initial comments, he hadn't even heard Griffin's actual quotes. The interviewer basically gave him a couple highlights and asked Moss to respond to them, naturally out of context.

skins have been a drama magnet for years and nowadays the national media is about being first, attract readers, and worry about accuracy later (any media, not just sports). That just compounds the problems. 3-7 will make anyone frustrated. :)

  14. I lost even more respect for Griffin after his last post game Presser. He blamed his INT on 3rd and 1 on his receiving corps. Said they couldn't get it open... Those I'd in RGIII are pronouns, not numerals

no he didn't - in regards to the throw, he said it was his mistake and he has to learn from it. The comments about the WRs and protections were while he was explaining how the play unfolded. Did you actually watch the presser or just all the sound bytes being taken out of context?

this whole thing is just silly...

  15. ...get some space for our running backs.

Philly has been doing this exceptionally well this year, and it shows in McCoy's stats. Being up here in the NW the last couple years I saw Kelly's Oregon offense up close quite a bit. I knew he'd have to make some changes going into the NFL, but I knew McCoy would be a great back for him.

  16. I can't go that far. That's definitely the way the Redskins are using him, and maybe that's all the proof we need. But at this point, I have to put the onus on the passing scheme, not the QB. They don't ask him to be a progression based passer.

agree with both of you posts here Sup

RO "fad" as some put it...yeah its being defended and causing problems, but that isn't due to scheme; its due to execution. Just bugs me when something as perfectly viable as the read option is still being called a gimmick and fad just because the two main QBs running it last year aren't developed enough yet to run other things to keep defenses honest. Anyone can sell out to stop something, doesn't mean its a fad or gimmick. General statement, nothing towards your post Sup. :)

As for Griffin, he's still slow at going through his progressions, but on a number of plays, there's only 2 or 3 people in patterns, and even with 7 protecting, the interior OL is getting pushed back into his lap, and part of that is due to the depth of the play-action from the pistol. Not ideal when your guards can't hold their own. Also like RGIII said here in an earlier post, it looks like he's having some mental issues yet when it comes to delivering the ball, and it looks to me that he's sometimes seeing ghosts in the pocket after some of the beatings he took standing back there. Sometimes he holds onto the ball too long, other times he bails when he doesn't have to. Just some of the maturation a young passer has to go through since he didn't come up in a pro system. None of this was unknown coming into the league :)

  17. seeing a lot of the growing pains that one would normally have in their rookie season playing in a traditional offense; book isn't written yet. I think I said after the draft that I wouldn't draw any solid conclusions for at least 3 years knowing he was far from a finished product, so I'll wait to pass any kind of judgement. The word I've kept using for him is 'potential'. Have to reach it though.
