  1. In the 3rd round,  he's a steal.

His one red flag is his inability to stay healthy.    That said,  he's played with most of his injuries and played pretty well.   But he's been more banged up than most players seem to get for three straight years now.     It also appears he's slow to heal up,  and that's another concern.

Depending on what medical reports show, and how he tests,  I'd be surprised if he lasted all the way to the bottom of the 3rd round where we pick...

Totally agree, but most have ranked as about the 70th best player, and the 4th best receiver. I think he goes in the 2nd unless a bad combine. Lets all remember what is written right now will be ripped up after the combine. That is where Grigson is his best. He trusts tape, and is not wowed by the numbers. If players fall due to a bad 40 or vertical, whatever, Grigson will see talent. Woods could fall if a bad combine. The only problem, who was the last Trojans receiver who has worked in the NFL. I preface that by saying I believe Marquise Lee will be fantastic, when he comes out!

  2. A couple of things. I agree Tyler Wilson does not make it out of the first round. Second, I used that chart last year when looking at draft trades which were happening and it did not add up. I believe that points per draft pick was done before the rookie salary cap, which changed the points significantly. I saw trades which should have netted much more, getting much less. My main point is the

Rookie Salary Cap has really changed what you can get in a trade!

  3. The last two years Ed Reed has thought seriously about retirement due to wanting time with his family, and has not been happy with his salary either. Right now he makes about 7Million a year, and although I would not mind having him for a few seasons since I think he can still be a ball hawk and be a great teacher, no way would I pay 7Million, plus the agony after the first year if you acquired him of not knowing if he is coming back, regardless of length of contract signed. Go after someone young Pagano can mold. I like Vaccaro and Elam myself!

  4. It is now official. Underclassmen had until Tuesday to declare for the draft, and then a few days to decide if they wanted to go back to school, as long as they had not signed with an agent. Today was the first day the list was put out officially. The list is long. See anything you like?

  5. When you are talking a lot of talent without much much experience, the latest guy who comes to mind was Jason Piere Paul, who the Giants took a few years back at #15 or #16 I believe. I believe he had only started playing football in college, and only 3 years at S. Florida. Freak of an athlete who had a great sophmore season, tailed off in junior season but due to injuries as I remember. I never want to draft someone on pure potential, but Giants took the gamble on potential and what they saw Sophmore season, and I think they are pretty happy. But it is a gamble, no doubt.

  6. No offense but I don't know and don't care. We're an NFL team that runs a "traditional" Pro-Style offense.

I realize this, and I am glad as I said in my post. We are incredibly fortunate to have Luck, a QB who can throw and run out of the pocket if necessary. A great athlete. Regardless though, we are going to have to play these offenses, and as we have seen the past few weeks, if it is not figured out by the Defensive Coordinators, points are going to be scored in bunches. So it is still an important thought on the future imho.

  7. Everyone here is saying through FA we need to upgrade the line, which is absolutly right. The problem is offensive lines who are good usually don't make it to FA. Grimes and Nicks were outliers last year, and got paide huge salaries, and they deserved them.

The other problem, when you look at other good teams, Packers, Bears, the number one priority for both is offensive linemen. Now Chicago has had the problem for years and not addressed it, but I am guessing with Rogers, like Luck getting roughed up, this is going to be their number one priority.

So put a dearth of quality linemen in FA with the competition we will be up against, and we will just have to hope Pagono and Grigs can do the best sales job!

  8. As far as the draft, I think Barrett Jones is going to be the only one to possibly reach us at 24. The caveat being, after the combines so many team scouts will be wowed by physical traits, several guys will go woosh up the draft board, who really should not. You can count on it. No matter what, I believe look at the tape, and make sure they showed in college they can play.

Do not draft potential if tape does not back it up!

  9. I want to ask everyone what they think of the Zone Read Offenses which have made RGIII, Wilson, and Kapernick look so good, and this is why they have gotten so much pub. in comparison to Luck, but that is not what I am asking about, so I digress.

Does the zone read in your opinion have a future, or is it more of a fad. Aaron Rogers yesterday came on his radio show declaring it a fad. I believe once the Defensive Coordinators get a off season to look at it, the impact of it will be slowed considerably. Look at what happened when coaches had an offseason to look at Cam's first season. He was slowed considerably.

Then their is the injury impact, and that is twofold. Obviously when you have a running quarterback more hits to get taken out, as RGIII found out. Also though, Schlereth on Mike and Mike made an interesting observation I had not thougt about. As with running backs, even if hits don't take you out, they mileage on the body, just like running backs, so at 29-30 they are not able to run the same, and thier career could be limited regardless of injuries like RGIII.

Still I wonder if we are going to see a change, or will it be like the Wildcat. I think it will be incorporated, but not nearly like we have seen this year. This is college crossing over to Pro until it gets figured out. I would love everyone's thoughts.

In the end, I am glad we have a strong drop back passer who can run if need be and escape the pocket!

  10. When looking at who is competition for FA, since many will want to go to a winning team, then I think you look at other attributes to determine who may have an edge. If you look at Cin. and competing with them, although their image has drastically improved the last two years, Mike Brown finally hired a GM I believe, and I believe they finally built a practice facility for themselves, those two things I just mentioned are the stigma attached to Cin. Very tight with $$. I don't know how the new CBA rules will impact Cin. because I don't know as some posters have said  the loopholes within it, and i am sure there are some. I do know any owner who won't build an indoor practice facility, until the past year, in a cold weather town, is not a team many want to go to.

Brown, just can't say right now because of the change in ownership, but if we look at it from a historical point of view, and the division they play in, still a tougher sell.

The Colts, winning history the last 10 years, an owner willing to spend to win, and now a coach who many have said "players would go through a wall for". I think our head coach is going to help in the recruitment of FA's and although I am far from partial, I think the Colts really are a good destination for players with a choice of teams IMHO.

  11. On the topic of the cap and how much we will spend this year, you may want to even think one more year ahead, as I am sure Grigson is. He can go out and spend money comfortably if he finds players he wants and not worry too much about cap room next year in 2014. Why, because next year the cap is going to be going up for the first time since the new CBA due to new television deals which will be signed. Do not know how much it will rise, projections are all over the place, but if you look at how much ESPN paid for College Football rights, and then take that to the most popular sport in the US, the NFL, and I think the colts will again have some nice cap room even after this year. I still prefer a smart approach to it. I can't count a team that has gotten better due to free agency only. Redskins and Eagles are perfect examples. What I can say is teams who use FA wisely and have cap room to use each year if situations arise always due well.

I think Grigson works on the trenches for us, as least this is my hope. Regardless, just thought it may be important to just think about what is possibly already going through his mind. When he makes this year's decisions, you have to always be looking ahead. Like chess!

  12. I think you are going to see a draft like two years ago, when so many quarterback needy teams tooks quarterbacks in the first round who should not have gone first round. Cam Newton, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert and Ponder, all in the first 12 picks. The only justified pick was Cam Newton.

In this draft, due to all the QB needs, we are going to see the same thing I expect. As Brian Billick says "need is a terrible talent evaluator", but it usually wins out when teams are desperate. Geno Smith and Matt Barkley will definitely go first round. I would not be surpirsed to see Mike Glennon, Tyler Bray and and Tyler Hanson all go in the first round. Need trumps a lot of things, and teams without qb's want to give fans hope many times. It is not the right move usually, but it is the NFL way it seems. Once the combine is over we will have a much better idea, but if anything, I would expect many of those names to move up the board after the combine as teams convince themselves they are players who can help their teams.

  13. I agree I can hardly watch Sportscenter anymore with the amount of coverage they give RGIII. They treat him like he is the second coming. Regardless, if you watch Mike n Mike in the morning, and some of the analysts I like, Cris Carter and Jaws they give Luck his due. Cris Carter and Golic were just asked a week ago if you had to choose amoung the three knowing what you know, whow would you take, and both chose Luck. In the end, they want the pure pocket passer with all the athletic ability, intangibles off the chart, who is not going to have their shelflife shortened due to injuries and hits. Also, I believe as the league gets to know the read option offense more, you are going to see his numbers go down, much like Cam Newton's this year did.

  14. Dashon Goldson- 5150 was right as he was signed on a one year tender but it was the franchise tag. If they cannot sign him to a long term deal they either have to cut him loose or they can apply the franchise tag one more time, but at 120% of the top 5 SS average salary, which I do not think SF will do. I don't know how there cap is, but they have a lot of starters signed for a long period of time, so it must be tight, so it is very possible he hits the FA market. I would love Goldson, but I would also love Byrd. Either one would be a great match with Bethea.

  15. It is hard to get a feel for what we will get, for as it has been said, it is kind of a proprietary secret for the NFL. Believe it or not, Wikipedia does a pretty good job of giving a broad outline for comp. picks. Based on what Garcon was paid, and when he has been healthy his impact, I am hoping for a 4th but no lower than a 5th. If he had stayed healthy, and due to a pretty large contract, I thought possibly we could get a 3rd. Saturday should bring a 6th to 7th and I think Tamme will bring us a 6th. So it would soften the blow of losing the 2nd rd. pick for Vontae.

  16. Guys-

Not sure how relevant it is, but BA said Manning was not even allowed to run no huddle until his second year, so Luck has already been given more than Manning was. I hope next year Luck is allowed to run no huddle, and call the plays himself. I am sure Pagano has realized Luck's strenghts of being mobile and to utilize them, and to give him more say in what is going on at the line of scrimmage, IMHO and of course a bit of hope

  17. Hey everyone-

I don't post very much, and I thank everyone for what they find out there on the Colts, especially when considering FA. I think two points should be made about free agency though. If I am correct, with around $40 million in cap space to spend, the Collective Bargaining agreement stated that teams going into the third year of the CB must use up to 90% of the capspace. This was to stop the cheapskate teams I guess. So a good portion of the money will be spent. Also, we need to consider the following year and FA, because things will change again. Why, new television agreement. This year cap will stay close to $120 million. I don't know how much it will rise, but when the new TV agreement is signed, the cap will move up again, so we will have more free cap space for 2014. Still, we will have to use 90% of the cap space we have this year. My opinion, big FA signings usually do not work out, it seems once they have their money. I look for more intermediate signings with upside. Still, I would be remiss to say, I think Jerrius Byrd falls perfectly into the category for us, and Dolphins have said they won't franchise Long. He would be expensive, but that is the one expensive FA I would sign. Him at LT and Castanzo at RT, and sign a guard. Imagine for a second Luck not having to run for his life what he could do. But whenever we consider FA, we must consider the changes that will occur the next two years!!

  18. I would love to find out what our comp. picks should be. I did some investigative work on my own and according to Wikipedia, we should get at least a 4th for Garcon and maybe a 3rd, because of the size of his contract. Another member said it did not matter due to he was only drafted in the 6th and that limited what we got in comp. I did not see this as a limiting factor in wiki, since they would not be the best source, just the one I thought of. You look at them and say at least a 4, possibly a 3 for Garcon, which is as high as possible, a 5-6 for Saturday and a 5-6 for Tamme. We had one other free agent sign who I can't think of right now. Anyone who knows all the rules that guide the comp. picks I would love to know what each one of those players should bring us in comp picks so we can look at the draft from that angle. At this point due to only having a 1,3,4 I would definitely choose option 2, but if we are going to get 3-4 comp. picks, my mind might change but I would really love to have the two back!

I still believe Pagano will get production from Davis and with his size and talent and our need at CB, I was OK with the trade, but we need talent. Thank god for FA, but that is going to be a thin market this year the way it looks. Anyone know about the comp. picks, I would really love to know about the guidelines and what we should get. Thanks!

  19. I have never liked his tweets simply because it seems like he is the only one in the NFL as far as owners who look to bring attention to thereselves. I kind of like the under the radar person, team. Plus, it seems the media has started to rip him, or at least they seem to make fun of him, for some of his tweets. I know it should not bother me, but I just don't like aspersions cast on the Colts. Now I read this on Sportsline, and it kind of encompassed how I felt, although I do not agree with some of there assertions, especially about driving up the price of trades. The others, you can make your own mind up!

Other NFL team execs say Irsay tweets are hurting his team

  20. If Vontae Davis is the target would not surprise me. After watching Miami Dolphins in "Hard Knocks" the last two weeks, at some point I got the feeling Davis was in the doghouse either with Philbin or the club in general.
