  1. Actually, Donald has been doing just about as well as Adrian Peterson when getting hit behind the line of scrimmage. When hit in the backfield the first game, DB averaged about -2.33 YPC. AP averaged about -1.33 YPC. In the second game, they both averaged about +0.33 YPC when hit in the backfield.

The difference is that DB is hit in the backfield nearly twice as much as AP (37.5% vs 20%).

That's an interesting comparison, but you would have to dig a little more deeply into those numbers and examine the video of Peterson. It's a small sample size and Peterson is returning from injury, so...

Brown has never struck me as a back who can move a pile.

  2. People are nit picking way too much. Saw some excellent perfect throws, some rockets, yes some passes that could be better but I heard some SMACKS also. Probably left a couple bruises in there. His so called "bomb" will get better in time. To me arm strength doesn't really seem like an issue and of course it's only been two games. I imagine if he actually had much time to sit in the pocket more on a consistent basis things might look a tad better.

That's what is leading to the inaccuracy and some of the hurried throws IMO. He's yet to feel comfortable in the pocket. As a QB, you can deal with occasional pressure. Constant pressure, however, takes a toll on any QB. I'm confident that, if they protect him, he will pick people apart. It probably won't look laser-like or video game like as you saw from Manning, but he will get the job done.

  3. Oh nonono...Just offering alternatives to people wanting to "brave the elements"...

Whether it was worth the expense or not is debatable. Regardless of whether it was folly or not, it's on the building now, and it will be open between 50-80. So, unless you want to walk down the street on Sundays and sit in an RCA Dome that doesn't exist, you're the one who needs to get used to it.

  4. I hate dome football. Always hated being outside on a perfect 70 degree fall day, then walk inside, into the fluorescent lights and sterile atmosphere to watch the game. Plus, we're trying to build a different type of team and a different attitude here. Keep it open as much as possible.

You could take care of some of the shadows just by repositioning the banners. Also, by October, with the angle of the sun, nearly the entire field is shaded.

  5. But, many people would argue that being smart would have been playing for overtime.

Not when, one, they can win the toss, drive for a TD and win the game, and two, you only need a FG to win. If you wait until OT, you need a TD to win, right? You basically had an extra sudden death possession, only needing a FG for the win. Obviously, the situation had changed. You're no longer protecting a lead, you're trying to win the game.

  6. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was our rookie QB who led us to have a 2-TD lead, was it not?

It's not as though they played in the manner they did against the Bears, opened up the passing game in the first half, and that's what built the lead. It was extremely safe, conservative play calling while taking an occasional shot... coupled with the Vikings being held to 6 points. That's what built the lead. Playing in the manner they did vs. the Bears led to four turnovers and a 20 point loss.

  7. For the people who doesnt like the play calling.. tough. Gone are the days when the defense comes off the field and the offense comes in and has a 3 and out faster than the speed of light because of incompletions... run the ball or at least try and keep trying cause its a rookie QBs bestfriend

The attitude of Colt fans is an interesting study. When a 14 point 4th quarter lead vanishes, 90% of the fans out there would blame their defense. What do Colt fans point to? Play calling. Why is that? Because they're used to Manning doing everything and winning every game for them. They simply accept the fact they have no power running game and a pathetic defense. But you're right Smitto, this is precisely the attitude Pagano is trying to change. How the Colts played with a two TD lead is how 90% of the teams in the league would have played it, especially with a rookie QB and rookies, new players and inexperienced players across the field. Pagano has alluded to the fact that he wants to instill a different attitude, where you can run against a stacked box when you want to, and your defense can hold a two TD lead for you... where your QB isn't relied on to do everything.

  8. - You have a rookie QB who turned the ball over four times last week.

    - You have a putrid O-line that does everything it can to get that rookie QB killed on every pocket passing play.

    - You have rookies and inexperienced players across the field.

    - You have a 14 point 4th quarter lead.

Bill Walsh and Bill Belichick would have done the same thing.

Also, the Colts didn't build a lead today by opening it up and playing in the manner they did last week. They built a lead by playing smart, low risk football while taking an occasional shot. They shielded Luck with play calling, and it got them a win. It's much easier to win with 0 turnovers than 5 turnovers.

  9. First possession of the second half we eat up eat minutes of the clock an score a field goal.

    Second possession:

We are on our own 2 yardline and are kinda sorta forced to run the ball. Run, incompletion (not very conservative), run, punt

Fourth quarter begins! Short pass for two yards. Run for four yards. 3rd and four: incomplete pass. It might be conservative, but the only problem is execution. We even had a run for decent yardage.

    Next possession:

    1. Indianapolis Colts at 12:40
    2. 1-10-IND 19 (12:40) (Run formation) PENALTY on IND-83-D.Allen, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at IND 19 - No Play. BOO!
    3. 1-15-IND 14 (12:40) (Run formation) 33-V.Ballard left guard to IND 12 for -2 yards (50-E.Henderson). BOO! Definitely a bit conservative.
    4. 2-17-IND 12 (12:00) (Shotgun) 33-V.Ballard up the middle to IND 20 for 8 yards (41-M.Raymond). PENALTY on IND-66-T.Essex, Offensive Holding, 6 yards, enforced at IND 12 - No Play. OMG This is getting frustrating. An effective run, but maybe too effective due to Essex. Notice the penalty puts us on the 6 yardline. Rookie QB 2nd and 23, the masses say let Luck fire away. Pagano says no dice, no pick sixes on my watch.
    5. 2-23-IND 6 (11:45) (Run formation) 33-V.Ballard up the middle to IND 9 for 3 yards (93-K.Williams). Conservative, forced to be.
    6. 3-20-IND 9 (11:03) (Shotgun) 26-M.Moore left tackle to IND 7 for -2 yards (50-E.Henderson). Conservative, forced to be.
    7. 4-22-IND 7 (10:23) 1-P.McAfee punts 55 yards to MIN 38, Center-45-M.Overton. 35-M.Sherels to MIN 46 for 8 yards (45-M.Overton).

Keep in mind this is with a one touchdown lead.

    1. Indianapolis Colts at 05:07
    2. 3-B.Walsh kicks 74 yards from MIN 35 to IND -9. 13-T.Hilton, Touchback.
    3. 1-10-IND 20 (5:07) (Run formation) 31-D.Brown up the middle to IND 20 for no gain (50-E.Henderson). EH?
    4. Timeout #1 by IND at 04:32. ???
    5. 2-10-IND 20 (4:32) (Run formation) 12-A.Luck pass short right to 87-R.Wayne to IND 25 for 5 yards (22-H.Smith; 50-E.Henderson). MIN-50-E.Henderson was injured during the play. Sounds like a situational checkdown. If there are so many in the box, go with the quick slant.
    6. 3-5-IND 25 (4:03) (Shotgun) 12-A.Luck pass short left to 11-D.Avery to IND 33 for 8 yards (20-C.Cook). YAY first down! Great catch by Adams.
    7. 1-10-IND 33 (3:20) (Run formation) 31-D.Brown up the middle to IND 33 for no gain (96-B.Robison). SAD D:
    8. Timeout #1 by MIN at 03:13.
    9. 2-10-IND 33 (3:13) (Run formation) 12-A.Luck pass short right to 11-D.Avery to IND 38 for 5 yards (26-A.Winfield; 96-B.Robison). Another situational checkdown/low risk pass to gain some yardage.
    10. Timeout #2 by MIN at 03:07.
    11. 3-5-IND 38 (3:07) (Shotgun) 12-A.Luck sacked at IND 16 for -22 yards (97-E.Griffen). Notice the snap is at the Indy 38, if it wasn't for Luck's blunder we could have pinned them down around their thirty or even better. Given an equal punt as the next play or better (no twelve yard return) the Vikings have the ball at their 31 yardline as opposed to our 47.
    12. Timeout #3 by MIN at 03:00.
    13. 4-27-IND 16 (3:00) 1-P.McAfee punts 43 yards to MIN 41, Center-45-M.Overton. 35-M.Sherels to IND 47 for 12 yards (97-M.Addison). We needed a better kick and better coverage. Also notice we forced the Vikings to use up all three of their timeouts on this drive. Ultimately it didn't matter, but still something you want a four minute offense to be able to do.

So as you can see, in a number of situations Pagano was forced into conservative playcalling in order to protect his rookie quarterback.

As I said, the play calling was excellent. I was extremely happy with the play calling.

  10. The Colts need to script about 40-50 plays to frustrate a pass rush - screens, middle screens, wr screens, misdirection, roll draws, rollouts, quick outs, slants, etc. Manning played entire games in that mode. The pass rush eventually becomes tired and frustrated, and that's when you take your shots.

  11. The offensive playcalling is a huge problem right now. I'm not so worried about running the ball as a huge part of the offense; I'm more concerned about situational running. And I think we have some work to do in that area, for sure. But if we can protect the quarterback, not just with better line play, but with smart playcalling and protections that make up for the line deficiencies, then we can be effective in the passing game without getting the quarterback killed.

    Absolutely right.

  12. We must throw the ball at least 35 times a game to be effective.

With a crap O-line, rookie QB and rookies surrounding him, that's a recipe for disaster. You will "David Carr" Luck with that plan. Luck has taken more hits in a month than Manning did in three years.

We're not anywhere near ready to compete for a Super Bowl. This offense needs to get its footing first. I would come out on Sunday and play max protect, ball control. I would run it three times in a row on occasion, throw multiple screens and take an occasional shot. After the Bears game and with a bunch of nervous rookies and inexperienced players, you need to ease into things and slowly build some confidence. Priority #1 for 2012 should be getting through this season without mentally or physically wrecking Luck. Don't "David Carr" the guy.

  13. Yep, he'll never live up to the daunting 9-10 playoff record.

Look, I'm a Luck supporter, but let's be honest: Luck would never have made the playoffs with the pathetic teams Manning carried, to have a 9-10 playoff record. He's not that kind of QB. Few in the history of the game are. That's why we need to build a real, balanced team for once. If we do, Luck will be just fine. He has everything you want in a QB, provided he's playing on a real football team. Currently, he's not.

  14. If he's playing from behind, behind pathetic protection, surrounded by rookies, often in 2nd and 3rd and long, throwing 42 times a game, this is how it will look every week. This is going to take time. He's walking into a 2-14 team that was one of the worst football teams I've ever seen. He's not exactly walking into a Roethlisberger or Flacco-type situation. If he were walking into such a situation, he could win now. He's good enough to win now. He's just not good enough at the moment to be Superman, to be Peyton Manning, and carry a pathetic team.
