  1. It could have been a given with a few losses in the late games, but in looking at the schedules, this is not a given. Hopefully, these teams lose a game I'm not expecting them to.

I half expect the Steelers to run the table.

  2. next year, when Luck sets the league on fire with all those nonsense deep pases im going to look back at this thread :)

That's how I'm starting too feel. Over the past month, you've seen glimpses of the future. This has the potential to be a dynamic offense, and Luck is talented enough to pull it off. As for the preciction this offense is going to ruin him, I see the opposite as a distinct possibilty. Perhaps throwing him headfirst into this difficult and demanding situation will actually speed up his progression as a QB.

  3. 1. Broncos-I'll say what some may be afraid to say; It's Peyton Manning with his history in the playoffs

The problem with that theory is he is no longer playing on the Colts. :) Sure, in a fantasy world, I wouldn't mind facing some of the former Colt teams he played on. Today, he enjoys an actual defense, respectable running game and occasional help from his special teams. In Denver, you would be facing a real football team, not a Polian team.

  4. 7-4 is one thing and people will ignore issues based on the record. That was done for more than decade, so, just another aspect of the franchise not changing much.

Trust me, I wasn't one to ignore issues under Polian, but I don't see the similarities, FJC. Through 11 games, it's far too early to be that down on Arians' offense. I'm not thrilled with the system at times, especially for a rookie QB, and I would like to see some alterations, but there are too many variables to blame the lack of scoring on the system. More often than not, when I replay the scoring position problems we've had in my mind, it comes down to execution and self destruction, not the system. It's too easy to blame the system, and it's too early to compare the current problems to Sweet Pea Burns, 260 lbs. DTs and some of the madness we witnessed under Polian.

  5. If they get the game in Detroit, they will probably do it. If not, it's going to be a week-by-week, back-and-forth thing. We could very well be in a three-way tie after next weekend. And the Bengals are the competition IMO. After Roethlisberger returns, I wouldn't be surprised if the Steelers run the table. I'm not counting on them tanking.

  6. And only 2 fieldgoals to show for it against the worst redzone defense in the league. It's clear that Arians can't scheme effective route combinations the more the field shrinks because he's all about the long ball. Don't expect this offense to ever become a juggernaut as long as he's the signal caller.

EDIT: And if I see one more receiver motion followed by a bubble screen, I'm gonna scream

I'm not thrilled with the situational play calling, but it still mostly comes down to execution IMO. If Luck isn't hit on the throw to Ballard, it's a TD. Block it up, and it's a TD. This offense is putting them in position to score. They just have to finish drives. If they finish drives, the games begin to take on a different character.

  7. That is my biggest fear with those habits being ingrained in Luck. I saw Arians tutor Peyton as QB coach in 1998-2000. For the longest time, Peyton went for the farthest yardage and never took checkdowns, at least not till 2006 when we won the SB. It finally dawned on him to give it up to the best Ds that were playing 2 safeties and LBs deeper that he either had to take more checkdowns or run the ball more. Brady got IT much earlier. We used to complain about Brady being a dinker and dunker with wideouts like Givens and Patten beating us in Foxboro with methodical 80 or 90 yard drives that made our D bend and break. Brady was being smart about it, Peyton was not, in hindsight, hence all those INTs vs Law & Harrison at Foxboro.

Sorry, Chad, but that's a gross oversimplification, and inaccurate in areas. Football isn't a one-dimensional, offense-only sport. Brady was successful early on largely due to the play of his defense and special teams. Had he played in the same style with a pathetic defense, without turnovers, pick 6's or big plays from his special teams, he would have lost the same games by three TDs. Why has his manner of play changed over the years? Out of necessity, due to his defense going south. With the performance of his pass defense today, were he to revert to his '01-'04 style, the Patriots would be a 4-12 team. Over the past few years he has learned what it was like for Manning his entire career.

Long range passes and bombs to Moss, Harrison and Wayne might be all fine and dandy from a yardage and "shock and awe" factor but when it comes to efficient offense and winning football, short range is king, even more so in the playoffs.

One could argue the past five Super Bowls have been won by gunslingers. Did Eli take down the Pats on the final drives by dinking and dunking? No, he did so by slinging it.

Could the Colts use more quick-hitting passes? Yes. But speaking in absolutes, as you have done here, leads to faulty conclusions.

  8. It is a game by game situation. The conservative came from "running against 8 man fronts" with a lead 3 times in a row.

Not only that, after a few of the dink and dunk moments we have seen(vs. Minnesota), a high number of people were clamoring for the vertical passing game(let Luck open it up). That was my point. As I recall, there was more vocal criticism from that direction than ours.

Until we play a good team like the Pats and they know the pass is coming its just a matter of one of there players making a play on the ball which they did

Did they even make a play on those throws? :) Those passes just got away from him.

  9. Many of us would like to see more quick hitting throws in the passing game, the backs utilized, etc. But as soon as that happens, all of the Arians is too conservative people will return, and to be quite honest, I think there were more of them than us. :) So, perhaps a majority of the fans are perfectly happy with the downfield game.

In the end, I somewhat agree with the people who contend it doesn't matter. It's all about talent and execution. Draft the right players for the system and execute it. I know this: if they execute it on a high level, this offense will be fun to watch.

  10. A lot of the top 10 in the league offensive numbers are the reward part of the offense. The turnovers are the risk part of the offense. There is a gun slinging element to our offense, no doubt about it.

If I had less turnovers and less offensive yardage but more points (at least 3 more on average per game), I will take that any day. I'd rather be 21st in yardage and 4th in points per game than 4th in yardage in the league and 21st in points per game. There needs to be a happy medium found - maybe 12th in yardage and 10th in points per game??? :)

To a degree that may be true, but I'm not sure we can pin the turnovers entirely on the philosophy. It's a little more complicated than that. There are many other factors to consider. Also, it's not only turnovers. They're self destructing in other ways and simply not finishing drives. Put it this way: I don't see the lack of points as some sort of counterintuitive effect of overaggressiveness.

  11. Of course and it should be, It was obvious that was going to be the direction we were going to head, Just seems like throwing on 57.7 percent of the plays (for the season) is a little much given our O Line issues in my opinion, Its not so much even the ratio its the type of pass it is, the down the field throwing offense, Seems Arians offense can be classified as a vertical offense, get the ball up and down the field as quick as possible and all but eliminate the short to intermediate pass game, Also understand none of this is to take shots at Arians personally or otherwise, But I find myself scratchin my head on some calls, I mean we had the lead on the Pats when we were using the run and pass vs the Pats (for example) and then they scored to tie it up and then its like we went into trigger happy mode

I don't know. It just snowballed and got out of hand on a few plays. I'm not sure I can trace that back to not running the ball enough.

  12. Luck has proven that he does horrible when his ears are pinned back, or at least the threat of a running game for FOUR QUARTERS.

If you feel that way, you're only looking at the negative. I'm also looking at the positive, keeping in mind that he's a rookie. Sure he had a few passes get away from him in New England, but for a rookie, he had some impressive moments.

  13. How many games has Luck actually looked good when slinging the ball down field when Arians went on one of his pass happy I forgot what running backs are kind of phases? He has had 1 game when he has thrown the ball 44 or more times when he had a decent 62 completion percentage

That's a complicated issue, depending upon opponent, game situation, etc., etc., and not really what I was getting at. My point was this: if anyone has watched Luck in his recent high moments and thinks that, in the years to come, the Colts will be playing like the 49ers, they are mistaken. Two months ago, the jury was still out on where they were headed. Today, it's pretty clear. Now, I hope it's a little more balanced than it was with Manning, but with Luck, this will always be a pass first offense.

  14. Or he's forced to locate Wayne and force a throw to him which is where the majority of his interceptions have come.

Force-feeding Reggie is where a majority of Manning's INTs happened as well. Psychologically speaking, I understand it. If you are going to force a ball, you force it to the player you trust the most to come up with it.

  15. I would prefer a varied passing game where things were made a little easier on Luck through play calling. Also, the situational play calling could be better. That said, they move the ball as well as anyone in the league. If they weren't turning the ball over and were finishing drives, I'm not sure we would have much to complain about. Self destruction; youthful mistakes - this is why they're not scoring as much as they should. Iron that out, and everything will be fine.
