  1. Could freeman be the "ray lewis" or is he too small?

Nice post. Ray played what - 17 seasons? How many other Ray Lewis' have we seen in those 17 years? I would say maybe 3 guys get into the discussion - so maybe you dont need a Ray Lewis to be successful with this DEF. And if there is a way to make this DEF better - we have the #1 assett going in our favor to figure that out.

A man on the inside of it for 4 years.

C Pagano may not have invented this DEF - but you have to get a pretty good grasp of a DEF to make changes to it. I believe his understanding of the DEF & the fact that he has a blue print to build on gives us the ability to get more out of less.

Another thing going for us potentially is perception. One could say that the BAL offense just began carrying the team the last 2 years. INDY has never been looked at DEF first. So our DEF should always be complimented in some way by our OFF.

Not having balance is why we were so dependent on #18. The vision is clear - we are building a team to where superstars are not as needed because our strength is balance.

Just my opinion - a little long because maybe this helps explain why I make negative comments about picking up big names. No disrespect. I just think we are on the verge of doing something big here in a unique way.

  2. I dont understand - exactly why would they release him if there is value we would want?

Also - would you agree that the OL was not in the best shape lat year? So how do you know our backs are not good enough?

The way ppl chase names around here there are alot of stars that were drafted in late rounds or came from small schools that would have been skipped right over.

  3. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the players still collect their salary while they are on IR.  It wouldn't have made a difference in terms of Peyton's play.  My understanding was they kept him active on the chance that maybe his neck heals and he can play sometime that season.

I think it also allowed Manning to be on the sidelines for the games.  If he was on IR I don't think that is allowed.

He made 26.4M that year & would have made 7.4 if placed of IR.

Me personally - I do not believe Peyton would have ever been put out there behind 2 rookie Tackles. Especially coming off of surgery.

I believe the timing of Peytons surgery was the very 1st domino to fall that ended with us getting A Luck.

Just my opinion - I really dont care enough about it to discuss - it worked out well for everyone involved except for the guys that created the situation to begin with.

  4. I am a lifetime Colts fan from back in the Baltimore days in the mid fifties but the only class Jim Irsay represents in my mind is third class. The way he treated Peyton Manning only enforced that image in my mind. It is catching up with him. He no longer has a waiting list for season tickets. I will agree with you that he was smart enough to get out of the football business and let experts run the team....

I feel ur pain - but unfortunately I have to tell you ur waaaay off on blaming the owner for the Peyton release. Irsay didnt IR Peyton knowing he wasnt going to play allowing Peyton a 20M payday in a year he didnt touch the field. Thats not the actions of a snake. Peyton would be a Colt if Peyton wanted to be.

Look at how it worked out for everyone involved - you cant believe this is all luck do you.

  5. We been trying to get McKinney out of there. Pagano only brought him over for exactly this reason. To have someone that knew the system while we find something better. If he misses training camp - then he will be outside of the rotation. I look for him to get cut. That almost a good thing - means our youngsters are getting right.

  6. Good point about Jenkins then I probably would of passed on Hughes in the 5th and drafted Brandon Jenkins in the 5th and tried to trade up in the 6th to select Rambo before the Redskins got him right before we had the chance, If we could not get Rambo then I would have went Brandan Bishop

What is the most important measure of a draft prospect to you? I mean how do you value them? I always get confused when I see ppl talk about players that they would have taken without any type of interview process.

Am I missing something or can you go to a site and see how prospects tested & interviewed? Can I see their Wonderlick Score? That would be great.

I form opinions as to who I think fits our team - but I dont take myself serious enough to think I actually know because Im not actually meeting the players.

That would be like hiring a babysitter or nanny without ever meeting the applicant. And if you have any kids - you know its possible - but highly unlikely.

In my opinion - McShay and company specialize in what we as fans do - but they still do not have the excact objective of the NFL GM when they talk to prospects either. That is why even if you take out trades - no Mock Draft will even be 100% correct. When one CB that McShay has projected in the 3rd gets taking ahead of a CB projected in the 2nd - I expect the draft experts to give an excuse. They get paid to know something they really cant know. Thats why they all hate Mocks.

We as fans get caught up in the same thing except we come on forums and argue with each other & we have even less of a chance to get it right.

I just think this is interesting is all.

  7. CB wasn't a need apparently in the eyes of Grigson cause if it was, we would've took Rhodes

Not necessarily true. I figuered it like this - which position A)Had more depth & B) Do you feel more comfortable picking up after the draft.

Without the experience - I would say an undrafted OL is riskier than a CB. Complete guess.

  8. Can show me where Robert Mathis showed signs of slowing down, that would suggest this move to a situational pass rusher as this thread suggest?

I cant say he will be some kind of 3rd down only player - but you gotta know this DEF isnt really for Mathis anymore. It isnt about him slowing down. Look back at our Run DEF under the old regime. Horrible. You could argue that all we had was pass rushers. Mathis isnt going to be a run stopper now. He will have a role to fit his skill set. Against many teams that will be cool. But some teams dont be shocked if you see Walden & Werner doing the heavy lifting.

  9. Your right, usually when teams are going up against a defense with their 5X Pro Bowl pass rusher benched they aren't going to take advantage of it.

You sound like youve never watched/played football.

I didnt understand what you were trying to say You started with "Im right" but ended with an insult. Im guessing sarcasm - but it didnt translate well so my response may be slightly off.

I apologize if I hurt your feelings by saying your statement reminded me of how I play Madden. I was simply saying Mathis does not need to get a bunch of sacks for our DEF to be dominant anymore. Yes - sacks are a plus - but we are setting up our DEF to be successful even with Mathis getting a breather - u know - staying fresh. He is our oldest LB.

Never did I say anything about him being benched or not playing. But as far as a team taking advantage of him not being on the field - i dont know what that means. Because it seems to me - teams have been taking advantage of him - on the field by running the ball down our throats the last 5-6 years plenty.

No - Im not the most knowledgable football fan - Im OK with that. I did play growing up & 1 year college - but Im not on here to measure pool sticks. Ill try to make my posts less threatening from now on.

  10. Colts WR Reggie Wayne on learning the new offensive system: "Guys seem to be picking it up pretty fast, faster than last year it seems."

    ^^^^^

    If that statement is spot on then the defenses later in the season will be adjusted to it too. I hope they are going to use alternating systems so the opposing defenses won't know what to expect, NFL players are the smartest and fastest and strongest so it will be figured out eventually, the best teams the Colts face will have the best DC so they would be ready if the Colts stayed with one system all year. I'm just saying that I hope that they are going to mix it up :}

    Go Colts!!!!!

I felt it necessary to tell you that offenses are not successful because "defenses dont know what they are doing". If that were true - right now - DEN just acquired everything they needed to never lose to NE again - or at least until they change OFFs. (Wes Welker)

The way you make it seem is like you dont understand what the term "learning an offense" means. They are not learning how to play football. They are learning the fundamental terminology on which everyone will communicate within the OFF or DEF.

The reason the DEF is taking longer than the OFF is simply because alot of what the DEF does is in reaction to the OFF. And you have to see it live to get it down.

We wont have to "mix up systems" to keep DEFs guessing - a diverse OFF is the system.

  11. Need Mathis to keep offenses honest, if we sell out the run Os will just pass in running situations...

You sound like you are talking about Madden. Game plans are not made up on Sundays & we dont know how effective Mathis will be without Freeney.

NFL teams spend months designing how they plan to try & win games. Our defense doesnt predicate getting a high amount of sacks from a pass rushing duo anymore. We getting set to punch teams in the mouth all game if necessary.

BAL has never had a Freeney and/or Mathis. So we gonna be all right.

  12. And a year from now,  Redding might be replaced by Hughes....   Franklin might be replaced by Chapman.....    and Bethea might be replaced by Boyett.....

    Or not....

But it's interesting food for thought.......

This is what camp is for. I believe all of this will be front & center immediately when camp starts. Except A Bethea.

I believe C Pagano is going to try & change the mental make-up of our team (Defense especially) the old fashioned way. He is preaching "STOP THE RUN" - well - thats not something you just turn on. You gotta raise the killer instinct of the team through intense competition.

Each man is pushing the next man to either get it done or get out the way so he can. Look at the depth chart. We can maneuver a player or 2 around and cover almost anybody. Expect injuries. Especially at OG/C & up the middle where competition will get ugly. This where change must come the quickest.

No more soft stepping on either line. The OL is responsible for a running game now. Not just 4 seconds to let A Luck throw. They gotta bring the pain.

  13. Im under the impression Mathis will be used like T Suggs & B Werner will be used like P Kruger.

Im not looking at our team as starters and backups. I think part of the reason we dont chase big names is so everybody feels a part of everything. The game will dictate who's out there. Some teams have better OLs than others. We might have to go with 3 heavies to occupy blockers to keep our ILB clean - we got that. We could go up on the scoreboard forcing our opponent to pass more. So we  then keep a steady rotation of our front 7 so we can get after it all game.

look at our front 7 - there is no one that you would worry about getting snaps. They could all play during the course of a game & help keep our DEF fresh for the 4th. Our objective is stop the run - I think they plan on using a very deep rotation to stay fresh enough to do that.

I do believe Mathis could be used as a pass rush specialist to keep him fresh & injury free for the playoffs. I believe this is where Walden comes in. Because if B Werner starts - he's the on the line ROLB, right. They could move B Werner to Mathis' side & Walden can play on line. I hope. Playoff injuries to D Freeney really really really got us a couple years.

  14. Whoa - I like Sampson - but I really like what they were doing with him. That WR Weave they had going was nice. One play - Sampson was out wide (Y) with a Slot inside him (X). The (X) ran a bubble screen & it looked like Sampson was gonna block. CB ran right past him - Sampson curled up wide open.

Can you imagine if that is what they mean by "short passing game". With T.Y - Reggie & Brazil with DBH at the (Z) holding the Safety out of the box.

    EXPLOSIVE -

  15. I do like the pick of Werner, but Im not high on our 3rd and 4th rounders. Both were reaches in my mind. Plus we still have a need for a 3rd corner if Davis or Toler gets injured. And RB could use a boost since I dont trust Brown or Carter.

The Holmes pick I really question and here is why...

Theres a 2 part explanation why I dont like this pick. One, it just seems as though we are copying what the Titans are doing, except with worse players. (They got Levitre, we got Thomas, they got Warmack, we got Thornton, they got Schwenke, we got Holmes).

    2) Center should have been a postion we were ok at with both Satelle and Shipley. Now this pick shows that they were wrong about Satelle, and that was wasted money. Maybe our scouts' eye for free agents arent as good as we thought.

But hopefully Im wrong and these guys end up being good starters.

No matter what reasons or even valid points you make in a thread like this - this is what we hear:

"I dont like how the 2 men that J Irsay is paying to make the big decisions - are making their decisions and they should listen to me because I can do their job better than them without any of their resources."

You cant win this argument - at least not today. Its not the time to question the draft. The time just ended for us to question last years draft - but you know what - you just like me - didnt have any questions.

So why am I seeing so many complaints? On our GM's watch - we went from 2 wins to 11 & his reward is constant disrespect and distrust.

We are all anxious to see what we got - but at least let them show it on the field before you give up ur bandwagon seat.

  16. I don't see any realistic scenario where Wayne or Mathis could be traded. Grigs will do everything to improve the team. Those two exemplify 'team'.

    L.A.M.

You missed the point stated in the post? The point was that something could happen you cant see - the players mentioned were irrelevent.

But to your point - You are telling me you seen Peyton getting cut? Not traded - you seen him getting cut? But you cant see any scenerio were we move a 30+ WR?

C'mon - I bet theres at least 3 WR you could justify trading Reggie for.

  17. This is the time to not get too involved with any player. We gotta cut 37 guys right. I could understand scenerios where big name over 30 guys like Mathis or Wayne were traded.

And before you go H.A.M - its just an example. The point is that everything im seeing from the GM says we serious about not rebuilding - & just reloading. So that means we dont have time for contract disputes & holdouts. You will be shopped &/or dropped before any of that.

  18. Well honestly we could very well win equal or more wins than last year. I just wanna wait until pre-season because I have no idea what this offense will look like. Defense you at least know what to expect just with different faces. Offense is a mystery box

We could honestly do anything - the point I was making was about crawling before you walk can help prevent disappointments. We have 2 draft picks from past years that havent played a down yet. I didnt quote you because you were negative - I quoted you because you were positive.

    yezzrr -

  19. I'll wait until after seeing how we look in pre-season

here here - It seems ppl feel we are automatically gonna win more games this year than last. If that was the case - we'd have more back-to-back champions. This is The NFL. Many things that took place last year were record breaking right. My priorty list is in this order:

    1) Making it to preseason without any major injuries.

    2) Making it thru preseason without any major injuries.

    3) Then im not worried about our 2nd win until we get our 1st.

  20. Cry much?

As for "cheating", the only thing that the Patriots did was videotape what was clearly visible from any point on the field. Even the Colts' coach and GM at the time said that what they did contributed nothing to their wins.

But keep on with these grand delusions that what the Patriots did actually affected the outcomes of games. It's pretty laughable.

Oh, and at least the Patriots' FO didn't tank a season to get the #1 rated college QB.

This issue is old & all parties involved have had respectful level-headed conversations. If you were having a bad day & needed something/one to lash out at for you to feel better - Im cool with that.

Now please continue being the calm cool cat Im sure you normally are.

To answer your question though - unfortunately due to an illness in the family - I have cried recently. Did you care or just being rude?

  21. I agree.  The Cards made some good moves.  Only problem is I don't see them being able to consistently compete with San Fran and Seattle.  I think they can still be a very good team, 10+ wins, but I just don't see them at the level of the 49ers and Seahawks yet

Interesting problem because the same could be said for every division. You could say we made good moves last year but are not on HOU level. The point would be HOU (just like SF & SEA) wont be able to keep their team for 5 years. ARI (just like us last year) brought in a foundation of young ballers that will be asking for mid-level contracts while SF & SEA are losing people to greed & FA. (BAL)

So I agree SF & SEA are up now - ARI & STL brought in a class that puts them in a position to even things out sooner than later.
