I’m guessing you haven’t seen the Ballard video from last night?  Banagu is NOT coming here as s poor man’s Brian Burns.

Banogu is being called a Jack of all Trades.   He’s being started at SAM linebacker.   But Ballard says he can play all three linebacker spots.  Ballard went in to say that B.B. will also play DE and even some DT.   Called him a rusher.   He can do a little of everything.

We are not putting him at right DE only.   You’ll see him everywhere.

    We'll find his sweet spot...

I was just think that this draft SEEMS to leave the door wide open to us signing a high impact, short term FA at DT.  Corey Liuget or Ndom Suh? Of course it also leaves room for Ajayi or Ware at RB as well.

There's no question we're going to have some massive battles at LB, CB & S.  There seems to be less competition at DT/NT.  Why not bring one of these two DTs in for a short term look? I don't think we can be done at one of our biggest positions of need.  I never imagined signing a player like Suh, but maybe all these Captains and Leaders we are drafting are ALSO building a team that could absorb antics from a guy like Suh?

Thoughts? And what other FA's might we now bring in?

Interesting, on a short term deal..1 yr, why not?

So with the draft over and done with, here are some cliff notes of what I think the colts did in the draft and how it relates to FA and how the teams is being built

-First note, the colts drafted three DBs. one physical in your face corner, one box safety, and one lengthy safety. What that tells me is the colts wanna provide coverage in different ways instead of just playing zone 80 percent of the time. Rock allows us to play him on an island at times with a teams top WR who excels at man coverage. With tell, you get another safety you can play deep that can strike as well. Willis allows us to match up with TEs and slot wrs.

-Second note, the colts drafted 4 LBers with two of them also being used as pass rushers as well. The colts want diversity when it comes to their LBers with Banogu and Green that have played both LB and EDGE and Okerker and Speed to add coverage.  Colts want to create a lot of rush from different players and also have coverage on the backside with the extra speed now from our LBers.

-Third note, the colts only drafted three players on offense, Two olinemen and one wr. The two olinemen are of course depth projects that gives guys like Clark, Garcia, Andrews and Webb competition. Campbell imo is the prize of the draft for us. Everyone knows how much I raved about campbell and cited hes the perfect weapon in reich's offense. Campbell is gonna allow us to create mismatches especially in the back field with Mack or Hines on the field at the same time. Its also gonna give us a lot of one on ones with Funchess and Ebron.

-Fourth note, the colts didn't draft a single dlinemen which tells me the colts like what they have at that position with Autry, Hunt, Stewart, Lewis, and Ward which allowed the colts to focus more on getting more speed on the defense. Also they didn't draft a RB which tells me Ajayi should be signed some time before mini camp.

Overall imo the colts wanted to go into this off-season focused on getting better in the back-end and getting more speed and coverage ability fro the LBer position. They also wanted to getting more pass rushers as Ballard has mentioned numerous times that he wants to have 8 pass rushers and not rely on one getting home. And finally the colts wanted depth for their oline and more weapons for andrew.

    Yes.

    Colts did three things:

    1. Got faster and more athletic.

    2. Created immense competition on defense.

    3. Drafted for sub packages and special teams.

Now we all know we don't play cover 2 zone. Why would you post this garbage?
We play many different coverages. And Ballard says you have to be able to man up to stop on 3rd downs. Well, you better have the CB's that can do it.

     This is SIMPLE stuff.
Just wondering, as a 3-4 outside backer did our guy drop into coverage?
I know he showed smooth transitions doing that at the combine.
And of course he has the size to be interesting on 1st downs on the strong side against good running teams (TN), and short yardage. An interesting prospect.

Ok, I'll go ahead and answer, we absolutely play a 4-3 cover two base defense, I'm not sure what you think we play.  If you're suggesting that at times we play cover three or on more rare occasions we play man or press man, that's fine but it's rare.  Sometimes we play nickle too.  Sometimes we drop our backers into coverage and sometimes we don't, sometimes we blitz corner, sometimes we stunt, sometimes we send M, W, S or we run combo stunts but all this is coming from a cover 2 base D.  I played Corner and Safety so maybe there's some new defensive base we're playing that I don't know about?  I'm open to you educating me on that.

As for my points, I very clearly say I like the picks, that shouldn't offend you.  These guys clearly have learning to do, when I watch the videos on the Banagou, he didn't drop into coverage, he was a backfield guy, which makes perfect sense as to why we like him, we want DLine that can penetrate so the zone schemes don't breakdown.  The guy is super athletic, I like that, BUT I saw zero indication he ever played as a 4-3 backer.  That's a completely legitimate point, I don't dislike him for that..it's just what I saw in a 5-minute clip man, so what do I know, I get it...mostly nothing, just like you.  It's ok to be civil...

Man, why can't people have decent conversations, why do people get so defensive and worked up over legitimate, simple opinions that they disagree with?  How about you ask the question like a grown up and I will respond to it.

Maybe not in base, but we will be in sub/specialty packages 65-70% of the time.  Eberflus has plans for the guy, no question.  Maybe he is a rushing SAM backer from base D in case they go no huddle and spread offense. ??

Sorry, I don't agree there.  I have a real scouting report (from an active paid scout/consultant, pre draft) that says he is better off coverage than at press man.  No question Eberflus will have more press man  packages this year, but not because Rock Ya Sin can't play zone, not at all.

I agree all of them have to be coached, developed and schemes adjusted to their strengths.  It's what the coaches are paid to do. The coaches wanted these guys, and want to coach them up.  I'm willing to wait and see what they do with them.

Good stuff man, go listen to Ballard's presser last night and he agrees me on Ya-Sin.

Yasin fits what we are looking to do in 2019 which is play a bit more man coverage with our zones. He has no issues with tackling, and they certainly would not have brought him here if they didnt feel he couldnt play zone. Banogu they have talked about him playing some Sam in our scheme so hed be standing up like he did at TCU. He will be pass rushing also im sure which isnt much of a transition.

Ya, I agree, both guys will be learning and adjusting to that, right?  Meaning it's not what they've done but doesn't mean that can't, or won't and that's where the character comes in to play.  Call us aligned.

Weve got at least 2 solid 3 techniques between Autry and Lewis. We still have Ridgeway as well as the other guy from Illinois. I said before the draft i wouldnt be surprised if we didnt take a 3 tech. I did want Tillery however because i thought he could also play Al Woods spot as well as the 3. I think at some point today you will see the Colts draft a guy to play behind/Compete with Grover Stewart at Al Woods old spot.

    I think you're right here..

I'll say that I don't really know enough to make a very educated opinion on most of the guys they took.

    I don't 100% love it right now....but don't hate it either.

Small schools and raw players mean they could be superstars.....or out of the league in a few years.  So this 2nd round could be looked back in a few seasons as an incredible draft class (like last year),  a total flop or somewhere in between.... but it will likely take a couple of years to find out which it is.

    No doubt.

  10. 37 minutes ago, krunk said:

Exactly why would Banogu and Yasin not be scheme fits? They fit just fine. Fit is a word Ballard uses all the time. Its important to him. He doesnt bring guys in who dont fit what we do in our schemes. Hes been known to say i would never force a player on our coaches. The player has to fit how we want to play. And besides this ive watched the film and i see no issues. Both of them fit.

He fits our culture, not our schemes.  If you watch Banogu for example, he plays as a 3-4 LB and a DE who at times goes inside to DT and we're going to play him as a 4-3 backer.  Do you see that as a natural fit, if you do then we have different definitions of the term.  Ballard sees an athletic guy, so do I, who is a great cultural fit that we need to find a way to use, which we will but he's not a natural scheme fit by any means.  Yasin, I have already explained.  He's a press cover corner and we play Cover 2 zone, so he has to learn to play zone and we may incorporate some press man into our defense.  So that's what I'm saying.  Both guys, accordingly to Ballard, are great culture fits who bring the athleticism we're looking for but they will have a lot of adjusting to do..a lot.  Try not to be offended by my opinion its grounded in fact and I'm not suggesting they were bad picks, so be cool.

Desir can play press! So we now have the tools on both side.

Not necessarily press man though. Press zone is also in the mix. Actually, I think we'll continue to be a zone heavy defense, but much more agressive than we were in 2018. And maybe add more cover3 to the mix, in which Hooker could truly blossom!

    I'm in!

Exactly. Talking about him, Ballard mentioned that he'll need some time to learn how to play zone, so he'll probably be eased in to the field during the season.

However, what I absolutely love about him is that he is a natural press corner. Press man and/or press zone, the point is - and this is music to my ears - Eberflus wants to be more agressive. I think we played soo muc soft zone because 1. we didn't have the right corners to play press, 2 didn't have enough pass rush to get to the QB soon enough to eliminate the big play threat againts press. Now he'll have the tools to be more agressive, play closer to the receivers. and I love it!

That's a good point.  thing is it's hard to have basically one guy who can play press man so it becomes very situational if on balance your defense is still a zone scheme.  I like the player, he'll learn which is why we get high character guys.  An important note here...It's always good to have a guy named Rock who looks jacked on your roster!

In my 7 years here,  I don't recall being more wrong than I have today.     And I'm OK with it.   I never think I know more than Ballard.   I have complete trust in CB, and it would take a long string of failure for me to lose it.    And I don't see that happening.   As I've said before,  he just oozes competence and professionalism.     So glad he's our GM.

But to all my mistakes.    We can start at the beginning...   for roughly 6 months I've been convinced we'd pick a DL in the first round,  and for a fair amount of those months,  I thought we'd double up and take another DL at pick 34.      Wrong and Wrong!    And I certainly never saw our first overall pick of the draft being a cornerback?!    Cornerback?!?   Wrong again!   I guess Ballard's definition of "Premium position" is limited only to the first round.   Ballard has now had 3 drafts and take a corner in the 2nd round twice.   Can't be a coincidence.  I would've thought that a top-50 pick would be premium.   Wrong again!    So, for those posters who I have pounded on,  trust me,  it will STOP from here on out.   After R1,  I guess anything is possible.

At pick 49,  I didn't see Ben Benogu going that high.   And I posted here that I thought he'd play DE for us.   And then the Colts called him an OLB.   And Kevin Bowen said we talked to him about playing next to Darius Leonard.    At his presser,  Ballard said BB can play all 3 LB spots, plus DE and could even kick inside to DT.    Called him a "rusher".     They're very high on him.    Tested as a top athlete for his size.

At pick 59,  I wasn't surprised we went WR.   But I had no feel for whether we'd go tall like Butler, or small like Isabella,  or someone in the middle?  No idea.    Ballard and Reich gushed over Parris.

And, even as a Stanford fan,  I confess to being surprised at Bobby Okereke going at pick 89.   I posted in the last month or two, that I thought Bobby was a quality back-up,  but wasn't sure he was a starter,  especially for us since I think he'd play the same spot as Darius at WILL.  I thought he might be a R4 or R5 guy.   But tonight.  CB says Okereke can play all three spots, which surprised me.    Bobby has been mostly an under-achiever at Stanford.   Even this year, his best,  people were not wowed by him.   He was listed at 6'3" and 235,  and those close to the program chuckled all the time about that.   They claimed he was neither that tall, nor that heavy.    And then he showed up at the Combine and under 6'2", so he was shorter,  but weighed 239.   That shocked everyone.   I'd guess he put on 8-12 pounds of good lean muscle after the season.  That also surprised the Stanford community.    He tested surprisingly well at the combine and pro day.    And Ballard seems very high on him.

Ballard talked tonight about adding, speed and athleticism.   He and Frank seem very happy with their results.    They gave no hints for tomorrow.

I'm eating crow.   A little garlic salt helps!    Washing it down with water.   Topping it off with some Humble Pie!      Bon Appetite!

Ahh, no need for this, predictions are all for fun, nobody actually knows who or what will be drafted, at best you get lucky.  I was completely wrong on Oline and Dline, so allow me to dine with you!  I do assume you have some sort of income not related to predicting draft picks?

That said, I'm a massive Ballard fan and I like these picks but I'm not sure I love them, it does raise some questions like:

    1. Are any of these guys starters?  I'm not so sure, I see some freakish athleticism but not sure we drafted a started today, maybe Ra-Sin.  Keep in mind we drafted two guys who are not scheme fits in Ra-Sin and Bangoku, can they learn, I'm sure.

    2. Did we give up too much in trading back in round one?

    3. We have some great athletes that will have to figure out how to play differently and we need to figure out how to use them which doesn't scream starter to me.  I only mention that in the context of we usually think of the first two or three picks as bonafide starters and these guys may not be that.  Perhaps our roster is so good at the moment that we don't draft sure fire starters anymore. We could have a nickel corner that matches up with TE's, we could have a pass rush guy, a backup LB and a third-down slot receiver.  I watched a ton of tape on the LB from Stanford, there's a ton of his game tape on YouTube and like you, I wasn't impressed.  I don't see what they see in that guy, I'll be honest.  He had a ton of miss reads and got lost in space a lot, you can call me skeptical on that particular pick.

Again, I 'm not being overly critical, I don't know more than Ballard, I trust this team to choose wisely.  The fan in me woke up this morning with these thoughts rattling around in my vacuous head.  I do look forward to seeing them fly around the field this year, we definitely got faster and more athletic which is very good!!!!

Are you kidding? Rock Ya-Sin is a perfect scheme fit for our D. Campbell fits what Reich wants to do on offense as well.

Chill, I don't think I was kidding, we don't play much press man and that's what he played at Temple right?  So he has to learn to play cover 2.  Now, we will likely man up on TE's with him but he's not a perfect scheme fit.  That doesn't mean he's not a good pick.

Watching Campbell more closely, I see some similarities between Luck and Haskins. They can both hang on too long looking for their primary read, and at times miss the underneath guy who is open right away. Reich's play calling has emphasized quick throws, and Luck's efficiency numbers benefited.

Add a player like Campbell to the mix, and I'm assuming Reich has a plan for him in the offense. If we didn't have other pass catchers and a really good QB, I could see a Percy Harvin like role for him early. But I think they'll move him between slot and Z and get him moving before the snap so he doesn't have to beat press. I don't know if he can run a hard slant against tight coverage, but I know if you give him traditional short slot routes and get him the ball on the run, he's gonna be dangerous.

I want to see him block with a little more enthusiasm, and I'd like to see a stiff arm to break tackles. But he's a good weapon for the Colts offense, pretty much just what I thought we needed this offseason.

I'm looking forward to your draft review...

Ballard was playing some chess today! We got an elite corner before the CB run began. Ballard squeezed an extra 5th out of our mid -2nd and took a solid DE. He beat the WR run and grabbed Campbell just in time. Then finished it off with a Darius Leonard clone! 6 picks tomorrow and an extra 2020 2nd round pick included with that and we are in great shape heading into tomorrow! The way Ballard sensed the CB and WR run was legendary! What a boss Ballard is!

It seems we put a premium on speed and athleticism over say scheme fit which I find interesting.  The TCU kid isn't necessarily a DE and not sure he looks like a 4-3 backer but the guys plays on the opposite side of the line of scrimmage a lot which is great. It's going to be super interesting to see how we use him.

Campbell can absolutely fly but wasn't hugely dynamic at OSU in terms of route running but dude can absolutely go.

Ya-Sin didn't really play C2 at Temple but I like we have a guy that can play man if needed and match up with TE's in the passing game.

    Speed, Speed, Speed...

I had hoped for an OT just to shore up the depth and future of the position but if Ballard was willing to walk from Risner and Jawaan Taylor at the top of two he must have had a good reason.  These guys should be fun to watch!

What he actually said was "several of them are still on the board" so he'll get one with #34 and seems happy to pass on the "others" that would have still been there by using the pick.  Seems ill logical, but I think it is something else entirely which he also hinted at without saying directly.

I think he know already that in a four year's we'll be giving max positional money to Leonard, and one year later we'll be giving it to Nelson.  (If they don't resign him early).  That's a minimum of 2 massive resigns.  He also expects we'll have to resign Luck AGAIN to God only knows how much money by that part (maybe 50 million a year by the end of Luck's deal? Nothing would surprise me).  And he also knows at least several of his other picks will be ready to re-up so he is financially making the choice to trade down as much as the exchange rate mentioned by others.   They will likely have a top 12 2nd round pick, maybe better, so it's all good.  The money will be further spread out.  This guy is 4-5 steps ahead of anything we're mulling over.

I see the WR's people wanted are still available.. (even some no one expected).  Not as sure about the LB/DTs but they were mostly gone before we drafted.  Tillery, Sweat and the Safety (can't think of his name) that went after our pick are all people suggested for us in the 1st/early 2nd so he clearly felt there were better or equal talents that will cost less than those 3.  We'll see tomorrow and Saturday.  And we'll see which of those 8 he picked we're getting soon enough.

    Yep!

Are you under the impression that NFL teams have no idea what next year’s draft looks like?   Next year’s draft is already being called loaded at a number of key positions including WR and RB among others.

Between Ballard and Dodds and Hogan, this front office knows what it is doing.   They have planned for every possibility including a trade down.

Plus, with the pick belonging to Washington, there’s a good chance the pick will be high in the 2nd round.

That's such a good point, although we can't know of course there's a good chance that Washington pick a high two next year if the rookie starts.  Plus, I'm sure a few of Ballards eight are still available.

I don't think he's considered a scheme fit is he?  Based on what I hear, which is by no means scripture, Greedy isn't exactly what the d is looking for in terms of a corner.  Good player though...

Today’s NFL is about stopping the pass and less about stopping the run.  So with the 26th pick, what is OUR best value pick in today’s NFL per this Colts Team?

DL - No thanks, 1st rd is a 3 down diff maker not a run stuffer.

Safety - No thanks, a SS in today’s game is a 3-5 rd pick mainly due to their lack of athleticism in pass coverage and a change in today’s game (Throwing league).

CB - No thanks, the Colts play a zone scheme and no reason for 1st rd talent here.  Julian Love could be an All Pro in this system in the 2nd rd.

Edge - No Value this late in 1st rd.

RB - Were not a rb away from hoisting the Lombardi, pass on any Alabama rb.  (See history)

LB/OL/QB - Later rds better value.

This leaves one position that CB and Staff has failed to realize, WR!  How many 3-outs does it take?  Minus TY, Colts have a bunch of Misfits at the position and a bunch of fan hopefuls.  Marvin/Reggie and TY/insert name here?  Funchess is a Ebron clone, Cane is coming back from ACL (Takes 2 yrs), and nobody’s!

The BEST value for this Colts team at 26 is a game changer WR to go along with TY.  These for sure Game Changer WR’s don’t normally fall to 26 so take full advantage.  Go watch the Chiefs game and ask yourself if we had another playmaker outside TY on the other side?

I think you have the right idea but solving it different than what I hear the team say in unison.  In a league getting smaller and faster on D, we want to pound it down peoples throats.  Think about how good the Dallas offense is at running the ball then imagine that with Andrew at QB and that's the vision.  I sense they are looking to dominate the line of scrimmage, pound the rock and throw at will.  Now, I freely admit, there's no way to read minds or know how a draft will fall but I'm starting to lean towards Dalton Risner if he's there.  I would be totally blown away if we go WR early.  If you do research on the kid, he sounds exactly like what Balland and Riech want.  Don't discount we brought Howard Mudd back as well...signs, signs, everywhere a sign!  Looking forward to tomorrow...if we get a receiver I'll be good with that too! :)
