  1. Well, the Texans fans loved him in the preseason.

They gave up on him pretty quick though.

They can be a fickle bunch.

Then again, so are we, what with Andrew Luck being such an awful QB with his terrible completion percentage and all........

  2. So Angerer is pretty much done for the year. Why dont they just put him on IR

We're only going into our 5th game. He could be out for three more weeks and he'd still be able to play half the season. Is freeing up a roster spot for the next couple weeks to bring in a backup for some other position worth more than Pat Angerer playing, say, 8 games?

I mean, by your logic, we should have put Bob Sanders on IR in 2006.

  3. The only QB throwing the ball more times per game than Luck right now is Brees. Luck is on pace to obliterate Sam Bradford's rookie record of 590 attempts (and completions too). Strictly speaking, since Luck is on pace to throw the ball 708 times, he's on pace to break the all-time NFL record for pass attempts in a season. And he's on pace to obliterate Newton's rookie passing yardage record by about 800 yards. And Luck hasn't been constantly throwing dump-off passes and relying on a strong running game like some other QBs I could mention.

Now, obviously, he probably won't keep those paces up, but, the point is, it's Luck's arm that's put the Colts in position to win games.

  4. Listened to the game on the radio, so watched it for the first time tonight.

    1. Gotta love the "Discount Double-Chuck" from Brown.

    2. I don't think that last time out by the Packers was simply a mistake by them. I think the Colts showing a blitz threw them off guard and they couldn't figure out the protection. Good call by the defense there.

    3. Did anyone catch the coach just throwing the clipboard and all the papers on the game winning TD? I couldn't stop laughing. Papers all over the field.

    4. Cory should be always be mic'd up. I don't even mean just during games. I mean, like, always.

    5. Yeah, that was a bad PI call in our favor. Like really bad.

    6. NFL Network isn't even trying to make these suspenseful. Every time they go to commercial they tease the next segment of coverage by showing the next score. Not like anyone watching these doesn't know how the game turns out, but they could at least come up with something other than "stay tuned to watch the Packers/Colts score another touchdown" while showing that touchdown.

    7. I actually didn't realize Fleener had 2 catches on the game winning drive. All I could remember was Luck-to-Wayne, Luck-to-Wayne, Luck-to-Wayne...

    8. The pass protection can be a bit inconsistent at times, but when it's good, it's really good.

  5. King was better than some of the other bums we had in the preseason, but yeah, Vaughn's performance made him expendable.

I'm relatively comfortable with Powers/Davis/Vaughn/Butler/Gordy. That roster spot is more valuable spent elsewhere than what King would add to that group.

  6. Regardless, I'm sure the team has a pretty good idea what went wrong on that play (better than us anyway), and I'm sure they'll address it.

Justice had a pretty good day for the most part, so we probably shouldn't give too much weight to this one play.

  7. Watch the Video guys. When the ball is Snapped, Justice's eyes IMMEDIATELY turn to Perry. Fleener was supposed to block Down on #37. Justice takes Perry outside which leaves a Gap, & Fleener fills the gap by blocking #37.

Due to Fleener bouncing back & forth from Perry to #37, Justice assumes that Fleener has Perry & he goes to block #37. But then Fleener goes to #37 & Justice being 300+ isn't gonna make it back to protect Luck from that Hit.

It's just like when a RB is in the Backfield with a QB. The RB usually takes the person coming from the Inside Gap. That is what Fleener was supposed to do. But hey, everyone makes Mistakes

In that case you could potentially blame both of them - Fleener for diverting off his assignment, even if just for a moment, and Justice for trying to cover for what he thought was a mistake by Fleener, and in doing so leaving himself out to dry against Perry. Either of them don't do that, Luck doesn't get his chest cavity rearranged.

  8. Justice has not been a disappointment. He's probably the only lineman on the team that hasn't been giving up a ton of sacks.

He had some moments that weren't the best yesterday but overall he hasn't been the one letting up the sacks.

Castanzo hasn't either, as evidenced by Peppers, Allen, and Matthews combining for a grand total of 1 sack in 3 games (and on top of that, the stats from last week on Football Outsiders suggest we are much more effective running to the left side as well). They also had us as the 6th best pass blocking team in the NFL, though that may be somewhat skewed by Luck's pocket awareness and mobility. Still, I think our offensive line problems as pass protection goes may be slightly overstated. Sure, we're not where we want to be in that regard, and we're not where we were during most of Manning's tenure, but we're not all that bad by NFL standards. Having a good left tackle is really the foundation of having a good pass blocking line, and we've got that now.

Either way I am sure that mistake won't happen again... Whether it was Fleener's or Justice's error... You know the O-Line coach is playing that footage over and over and over and over....

Yeah, that's an easily correctable error. Way better than if Perry had just overpowered him or something. Miscommunications are something you can fix.

  9. You could certainly make the argument that Wayne is the most skilled WR in the NFL, though not the most talented or most physically gifted. He can make just about any kind of catch, anywhere on the field, running any kind of route, against any kind of coverage.

  10. EVEN IF you assign him the blame for that play - which is difficult to determine without knowing who was responsible for what on that play - he was otherwise pretty solid. He seems to false start like Diem, but, well, that's par for the course. While I don't think he's the long term answer, he's certainly not so bad that we have to transform Reitz into a tackle to compensate, especially since with Olsen gone we have, like, 1 and a half (the half is Link) guards on the roster not counting Reitz, and 4 and a half tackles.

  11. Gronkowski had 10 TD's in his rookie season, i would say that blows away Fleener regardless of yards or receptions. I'll take the 60 points to 0 every time. The 10 catch and 10 total yard difference between the 2 does not make up for it. Yes i know he was in a better offense but the Colts offense hasn't stopped Allen from racking up a couple TD's so far.

I don't even think Fleener is having a better season then Allen at this point so i have a hard time accepting that Fleener is having one of the best years of a rookie tight end ever.

You are very badly missing my point. While I realize that Gronkowski's TD numbers are much better, the point still stands that, looking at dozens of active TEs, I could not find a single one with more receptions and yards than Fleener is on pace for. That's remarkable. And that's not saying that Fleener is having "one of the best years of a rookie tight end ever" (that's just putting ridiculous words in my mouth), just that, for a rookie TE, there's nothing wrong with his first four games. If you're saying he's been a failure so far, you're the one who is basically saying that he was a bad pick UNLESS he has the greatest rookie season for a tight end ever. And that's a ridiculous standard you're holding him to.

Regardless, the fact that pretty much all the other active TEs in the NFL didn't put up elite numbers their first year (Gronk's TDs notwithstanding) indicates that judging the Fleener pick based on his first 4 games is silly. Many of those players I listed have had quite good careers (hall of fame in several cases). Their teams didn't give up on them after a 20-30 catch, 200-400 yard rookie season. Why should we do so after 4 games where Fleener is on pace to have a pretty good year by those standards?

  12. Way too early.

Strictly speaking, Fleener is on pace for a better rookie year in terms of receptions and yards than Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Vernon Davis, Rob Gronkowski, Jason Witten, Jermichael Finley, Todd Heap, Jimmy Graham, Brandon Pettigrew, Owen Daniels, Kyle Rudolph, Heath Miller, Kevin Boss, Dallas Clark, Ben Watson, Marcedes Lewis, Jared Cook, Greg Olsen, Brent Celek, Fred Davis, Jermaine Gresham, Martellus Bennett, Dennis Pitta, Zach Miller, Tony Scheffler...

None of those guys had more receptions OR yards than Fleener is on pace for. The only - ONLY - guy I found who did better than what Fleener is on pace for in his rookie year in EITHER category was Aaron Hernandez, and Hernandez only beats Fleener's pace in yards - he had fewer receptions than Fleener is on pace for.

I could probably go on, but the point is, rookie TEs do NOT produce at elite levels. Ever. In compiling the above list, I didn't stumble across ANY active TEs with a clearly better rookie season than the one Fleener is on pace for (52 catches for 556 yards) - Hernandez is the only one who has an argument. I'm sure there may be one or two out there, but none of those guys did better than that. Most did substantially worse.

Fleener is a tight end. And based on the career track of basically EVERY tight end in the NFL today, we have to give him two years MINIMIUM.
