  1. They should've changed it so that touch-backs result in starting at the 15 instead of the 20. Give some incentive to run it out. Then again, the purpose and intent was to kill the return. Well, kinda. Whats off about this is teams that play outdoors, especially inclimate areas, will be returning and defending returns way more than indoor teams. It creates a different set of parameters for teams without a roof and that can't be good for the NFL.

I'm still waiting on an exact description of "unnecessary lunging". These rules are getting silly, and its all because of the money invested in players.

The rule regarding contact to a QB's helmet is a perfect example where the intent of a rule is molested into dysfunctionality. A finger swipe to the helmet is called a 15 yard penalty even though such a call violates the spirit of the rule. The spirit of the rule is sound, to protect a defenseless QB from being smacked/punched in the head, but they call even a casual, and accidental, swipe that couldn't kill a fly as the same.

When I see old 70's footage of Mel Blount clotheslining a defenseless receiver across the neck, I can see why rules needed to be introduced to protect players from essentially being assaulted by defenders. But the slippery slope has struck again, and we are getting 'powder puff' with my beloved game.

That rule has been changed. It almost cost us the game against the Colts last year.

  2. I wouldn't be so quick to compare to redskins. The caliber of players that eagles signed this off-season are ten fold to the caliber of the redskin signings. They have both signed "big names" only difference is the Eagles didn't sign washed up players.

Not only that, but the Eagles didn't sign players to ridiculous contracts. Other than Nnamdi, none of the other signings are guaranteed a cent beyond this season. The Redskins make players like Adam Archuletta the highest paid safety in football. They sign Haynesworth to a $100 Million deal and try and trade him only a year later. They also mortgage the future with trading away draft picks. The Eagles as of now have 10 picks in next year's draft.

  3. yeah i was wondering how in the world they have this much cap room with the franchise tag on vick. doesnt that mean he should be getting around 20 million unless they can get a longterm deal?

Vick's tag is worth about $16 Million right now. I originally thought we had about $20-$23 Million in cap space but it may have been more. Peter King had an article on Monday I think that said we still had over $7 Million in cap space left.

  4. hmmmmm I wonder if this is a security blanket with the Jackson holdout? Sure Jackson is quicker and flashier, but Smith plays roughly the same role (minus the return game). Maybe I'm just looking into this too much, but I'm wondering how long Jackson will holdout. I didn't think the Eagles could afford to restructure his contract with all of the splashes the organization made in the off-season.

Jackson isn't holding out anymore. He came to camp on Monday.

  5. Don't worry about Ronnie, he's done. He's lost about 3 steps and all his power, he's injury prone, and has always struggled to get 1,000 even as the starting RB in a run heavy system. He's not going to do much at all.

Given how little we run the ball, especially with our #2 back, he won't have to do much. If he makes the team, I imagine he'll be used mostly in short yardage/goal line plays, and maybe some Wildcat plays.

  6. 3.6 mil less than joe..

ronnie brown COULD b sick for the eagles..think about wildcat w him, vick, and desean..haha..wth!!!

    it could be reallll interesting

I'm not a big fan of the Wildcat, mainly because once Miami brought it back, Reid seemed to overuse it, so I can see him going back to it now. I guess if it's going to be done, no one better than the one who was great utilizing it.

  7. Ok so what's 21.5 - 12 - 5.5 - 5 - 2 - a bunch of other contracts = -13 - 20M dollars. If they were 21.5 M under the cap going in they couldn't afford all these contracts...

The thing to keep in mind is, the cash payout is different than the cap charge. Nnamdi's contract averages $12 Million per season, but the actual cap charge for this year is going to be less than that.

A guy on our board does a good job of keeping up on roughly where we are. His website is: Mod Edit

This year's figures look incomplete, but he estimates we're still roughly $2.7 Million under the cap. With more releases, and Vick doing a long term deal, that number will increase.

  8. Gotta pay those bills though....and at 1M/minute or whatever the rate is, those commercials ain't goin nowhere.

just as everybodysgotone said . . . you gotta fit in the commercials . . . and depending on how the games plays there are only some many opportunities to go to commercial break; bascially, turnovers, normal change of possession, timeouts, and scores. if there are not many of teh first three, you are stuck with having to fit them in on the 4th, scores . . .

I understand all that. I'm just speaking from a viewer's prospective.

  9. considering andy reid and the eagles have been contenders for what seems like forever why not go for it??? and who knows how long vick will last??

That's a key point right there. I think these next 2 years are going to be our best window with the core we have right now. Not to say that it won't last after, but given the ages of some of the key players, father-time catches up to everyone eventually.

  10. Even if Samuel is cut loose we won't go after him because he has a 9M cap hit for 2011.

Asomugha gets worst quote of the week props because he says "The Eagles team has a championship feel." Uh....right. Based on what.....the numerous title teams he's been associated with?

The $9 Million cap hit includes prorations from his signing bonus. If traded, his new team would only be responsible for his base salary for 2011, which is about $5.5 Million.

  11. I don't understand this whole infatuation teams have with Kolb. He looked mediocre in most of the games he's played in.

DRC, a second rounder, AND 63 million dollars?

    sheesh...

However, he will be throwing to Fitz...he'll probably have a pretty good year

I think a lot had to do with the timing. In a year which was said to be a weak QB draft class, and where the FA market had a lot of washed up vets, things just fell right for Kolb. It helped him that in 7 starts, he had been named NFC Offensive player of the week twice. He had a few ugly games, a couple great games, and some inbetween. My biggest hope for him last year was to see steady improvement from week 1 to week 17, but of course, he got concussed in week 1, and Vick took the NFL world by storm. I still think he has potential to be very good, but I agree with most that he is still unproven.

  12. QFT.

Orton would have been the safer pick, but not a long term answer. Then again Orton has shown if you give him some backing from the coaching staff, some weapons, and some time he does a pretty good job. You give him Fitz and say he is your guy he might be a solid QB.

Kolb defiantly has more potential, but give him 12 million a year and give up what you did to get him might have been to much for that potential.

Fitz must be jumping for joy because getting Kolb to throw him the ball will be heaven for him compared to Derek Anderson.

Supposedly, Fitz lobbied hard for him.

  13. What im wondering is: How can they afford Nnambi, DRC, Babin, Asante, Vick, McCoy, Jackson, and all these other players. Those 7 guys have to take up 45M, leaving them 75M for 55 players. BTW, Jason Peters also makes 8.5M next year, so make that 66.5M for 54 players. I just see them making a lot of big releases.

We were about $20-$23 Million under the cap going in, and the contracts they've paid out are really not as large as they seem. That said, I do expect some cuts/trades to be made. Bunkley was traded, and I expect our incumbent nickleback to be released eventually. Also, Vick is playing on the Franchise tag, and he's expected to sign a new deal soon which will help lower his current $16 Million cap charge.

  14. If I remember right (and I could be very wrong), but Vick is franchised, so he is only under contract for 1 more year. If he has another strong season, he could demand a big payday and there will certainly be teams willing to pay for him

He is playing under the Franchise Tag, but he is also expected to sign a long term deal, which will also alleviate some cap room for us.

  15. The Eagles had about $20 Million in cap room going in, and the deals they've signed really are not as big as they seem. Cullen for example signed a 5 year $25 Million deal, but according to LaConfora, or Lombardi, they can get out of it after 1 year, and it's basically a 1 year $4 Million deal. Nnamdi had been rumored to be seeking in the $18-$20 Million range, but he signed for an average of $12 Million a year. Babin's deal is also, like most NFL contracts, back loaded.

Joe Banner is typically hated by our fan base, (although better things have been said about him in the last 48 hours lol), but he has always been very good at structuring contracts, without hurting us for the future. Broderick Bunkley was also traded to Cleveland for a 5th round pick, which will clear some room as well. There will also likely be other cuts like Joselio Hanson, our nickleback, which will clear a little over $2 Million as well.
