  1. Wow... Once again, time to bring everyone down to earth! :P

We have been spoiled by our RBs producing early in their careers. Just look at our top guys since we drafted Peyton:

    • Marshall Faulk (2nd overall-pick in 1994)[HoF] 1,282 yards in Rookie season. (16 starts)
    • Edgerrin James (4th overall-pick in 1999) [HoF-caliber] 1,553 yards in Rookie season. (16 starts)
    • Dominic Rhodes (Out of nowhere UFA in 2001) 1,104 yards in Rookie season. (10 starts, 15 games played) [His only 1000 yard rushing season]
    • Joe Addai (30th overall-pick in 2006) 1,081 yards in Rookie season. (0 starts, 16 games played)
    • Donald Brown (27th overall-pick in 2009) 281 yards in Rookie season (0 starts, 10 games played)

    ^

    |That is a normal rookie season for a back-up.

From his Rookie season to his Sophomore season, Donald's carries only went up to 129 from 78 (+51) his Yards went up to 497 from 281 (+216), his Per/Rush Average went up to 3.9 from 3.6 (+...never mind), his First Downs went up to 24 from 14 (+10) and his fumbles went down from 1 to 0 (-..never mind again...).

Here is the big Donald Brown stat everyone needs to look at:

    2009 - 3 games with 10+ carries. 40 carries for 95 yards. 1 TDs. 2.4 Yards/Rush.

    2010 - 7 games with 10+ carries. 100 carries for 428 yards. 2 TDs. 4.3 Yards/Rush.

(anyone else think it's really odd that the carries on those games came out to flat-numbers??)

You must not have seen much of him at uconn. He led the ncaa in rushing with over 2000 yrds

I was about to post that. :)

nobody give j james any credit but there is people out there that will defend brown

James was a good goal line back at the end of last season, I think everyone will admit that. But as a change of pace back behind Addai, I don't think there's much chance of that at all. I like the combo of those three backs (Addai, Brown, James), when healthy. That said, Carter has potential, and being a recent draft choice he's likely to force James out of his job, which I think is a bad move. If we could get James to the practice squad in that situation, I'd be satisfied, but I think he'd more than likely get a few offers from other teams.

Addai's poor stats are attributed to his oft injured body and poor o-line blocking.

Where is everyone getting this idea Addai had bad stats last season. 8 games played, 500 yards and a 4.3 Yards/Rush Average. (2nd highest YPR average of his career)

  2. Two options:

    • Keep your best QB and then package a deal with the other two guys and a third player from your roster you may not be happy with (3rd WR, 2nd RB, 1st TE, etc.) and trade for an upgrade at whatever position you traded (WR, RB, TE, Etc..) So if you trade your 3rd best WR along with the two QBS, try to get his backup QB and someone of greater value then the position player you are trading. Any holes you have on your roster just add a FA, there is always guys you can add as fliers and sleepers.
      or
    • Trade the the backup QB with the same bye as your starter, and either add a position player to the trade and look for an upgrade at that player's position, or simply trade a 1-for-1 with a player of equal value at another position for depth or to fill a need.

    Good luck! ;)

The Key here is the Attempts numbers. Compare the YPR with similar seasons, and you can see the true reason we've ranked so low in Team Rushing...

    Peyton :manning: Manning

  3. While I am very sure you understand this, I am going to say it anyway. Our defense is built the way it is because of our offense. We expect Peyton and the offense to put up points and plenty of them. Theoretically, this will give us the lead and the other team will have to try to score quickly or else time runs out and we win. The fastest way to gain yards and points is through the air. Our defense is built on speed because we expect teams to pass against us more than they would run against us. That's also why we run the Tampa 2, it prevents the big play and when the other team eventually gets to the red zone (after burning off lots of time), our speed will be to our advantage because there is less ground to cover.

Now, when the offense doesn't do so well, that gives the opposing offense more options. They can run the ball, they can pass, they can do whatever they want because they don't need to worry about catching up to us. Our defense isn't built to stop the run as well as it is built to stop the pass and the best place to keep the opposing QB is on the sidelines. Running the ball not only keeps Peyton on the sidelines, but it also lets the other team gain yards while running off the clock, so Peyton has less time to work with to get the points back.

Personally, I think we don't have the correct personnel to run the Tampa 2 like they did during Dungy/Gruden's time in Tampa. We have a solid LB in Brackett (though he isn't as good as Derrick Brooks), we have a good safety in Bethea (though Bob was more like John Lynch than Bethea is) and we are missing the dominant DT, we don't have our own Warren Sapp. We need to be more aggressive than the base Tampa 2, we need to blitz more often, stunt more often, play a bit more man coverage, etc.

I think our CB play is the weakest link in our defense in this sense: when it is 3rd and short, our CBs line up with a 7 yard cushion. I'm not sure if Coyer tells them to line up that way or if Coyer gives them the choice of where to line up and our CBs choose to give that big a cushion, but that definitely needs to change. So many times we see the opposing offense have a quick 3-step-drop pass to their receiver for a first down. This neutralizes our pass rush and the play is run so quickly that our CBs can't stop the receiver before the first down. I would like to see our CBs play closer to the line and jam the receivers more often. We have safeties that are good in pass coverage, so they will have help over the top if they get beat. Yeah, our CBs are short, but strong positioning will lead to more success in jamming than height.

We don't need to go overboard in changing our defense, I just want to see a bit more aggressive play. I want to see more blitzes and more jamming. As Caldwell has the team saying during his first year, "Be the hunter, don't be the hunted"

Complete truth, and very well said.

  4. Man at first I was like "great just a SNF opening.." then I was like "y'know what, imma watch this regardless, cause that's how pumped I am for football..".... and then it got to the warning, and I got so pumped I bout snapped my laptop in half. :D

    Good Post.

  5. He *almost* made the roster last year as one of the final cuts. My guess is that the colts brass don't like the current crop of back-ups enough and wanted another long look at him this pre-season!??! As I recall he played very well for us and was just caught in a numbers crunch with all the injuries we had last year.

Yup, also what I remember. As I recall, he made his presence known on Special Teams all pre-season long.

  6. Nice I am thinking of a different guy. I was only on this board and didn't go read the article, thanks.

Does anyone think he is anything more then preseason fodder?

I think he could make back-up LB/Special Teams. I was a bit of a fan when he was at Arizona. I feel like he had a good combine as well, but that could be fabricated by yours truly. :)

  7. They always re-edit the rankings by the time the season starts. Heck, there will probably be a roster to download the day the game comes out.

Tackling mechanics appear to be much improved, and hopefully they bump the difficulty up a bit. Last game's All-Madden seemed to be more like All-Pro from a couple games ago.

  8. Joseph Addai is no Barry Sanders. We are worst in the league in rushing. Not trying to be mean, but when was the last time

Addai had a "big run?" We cant even average 100 yards a game rushing. I know part of that is because of our O line, but the backs need to take their responsibility too. I am not saying Addai or any back should not adapt and make cuts, but also there is a time to put your head down and run.

Addai played statistically great over the eight games he played.

Joe only played 8 games last season, which makes it convenient to just double his stats and get a rough idea of what a 16 season would of produced in his stats:

    Rushing

    232 Attempts, 990 Yards, 8 TDs (4.3 yds/rush, longest run was 46 yards)

    Receiving

    38 Receptions, 248 Yards, 0 TDs (6.5 yds/catch, longest catch was 16 yards)

Tell me how that would of been a bad season, especially with the awful offensive line we had last season.

Compare that to cedric benson, who rushed 321 times at 3.5 yards per rush for 1111 yards.

Addai's YPR over 321 carries would be 1380 yards with 11 TDs. That would be the third highest yards total out of all rushers last season, behind Arian Foster and Jamaal Charles.

Now I know that this isn't exactly what would've happened, but it's all we have to go by.

  9. What's up with Collie at FB/H-B? :blowtop:

Interesting how Harris and Sims are going to have to climb the deoth chart (I'm assuming because they are vets?) and Jamaal Anderson is being set immediately at back-up DE..

If Javaris James stays at 3rd on the RB depth chart, and Devin Moore stays at KR, looks like we're keeping 5 RBs because BP doesn't cut draft picks! :panic:

  10. In many ways, I pay homage to Baltimore by allowing them to retain possession of a Lombardi. It's theirs, they can have it. As they have been incapable of winning another. I imagine that this should bring them some solace.

If you're talking about Baltimore (the city) winning a Super Bowl [and not the Baltimore Colts]... the 2000 Ravens won the Super Bowl.

My brother-in-law (being from Ohio) is a Browns fan, and according to him most of the Dog Pound Nation (himself included) feel robbed to this day by Baltimore; not just for taking their team (leaving the franchise behind) but for winning a Super Bowl five seasons after moving.

I'm not sure if I agree with your opinion of 'disowning' what the Colts players did in Baltimore, but I definitely respect it.

  11. Edge and Bob at their prime were my favorite Offensive and Defensive players, runner-ups being: Offence = 2 Marv, 3 Marshall. Defense = 2 Freeney, 3 Mathis. (I can't help that my favorite positions in football are DE and Safety. ;D )

I find the lack of Raymond Berry in this thread to be quite disturbing...

    Too true.
