Well, our roster is just worse in my opinion.

-Our WR group is bottom third in the league.
-Our Oline was 29th (or 30th?) in pass protection last season. And we let our starting right guard walk and we’re essentially playing an unknown at LT (even if I have high hopes for him).
Yes they were injured last season, but I’m not sure we’ll see a top 5 unite this year.
-Ngokue should be an instant upgrade at the Dline but it came at the cost of worsening an already quistionable CB group.
    -We need an actual FS.
-And our TE1 retired and he was hardly a threat in the passing game last season.

Right now I don’t see us as a better team than last year.

Solid points and do agree we have weak spots. Though I do disagree that we aren’t a better team this year, even before the draft.

I definitely think we are better then we were last year. None of the guys we lost added much value last season outside of Odum and Rock IMO.

Rock is offset by Yannick and that is a net positive. Replacing Odum will probably be via the draft.

By mid season we were rolling out backups at both safety positions. We hopefully get a healthy Leonard and Khari and Blackmon back.

This team still managed to win 9 games against some very good teams. Lost some really close games to playoffs teams, high seeds and Super Bowl winners.

Every single team in the NFL has weaknesses and spots where they could use more depth, every single one. Our talent is spread out across all sides of the ball. We aren’t loaded one way or another and that’s ok. We can win with that.

    When did Ballard?

We aren’t any better than when he took over and we have needs at multiple key positions.
In the worst division in the AFC we can’t even get a wild card let alone the division title.

For that to be the fact Ballard would have to change his approach, like Snead. He won’t though.

I don’t hate Ballard, but in my book this is the final season he gets to prove his method works.

@Superman said it best, though, in the Ryan thread. Ballard seems to be stuck between wanting us to compete and to build our team through the draft and by managing the cap.
We’re just not in a place right now where we can compete against the big boys.

Why can’t we compete against top teams? We competed in nearly every single game last year outside of the most obvious one, week 17. No team blew us out and there isn’t a single playoff team we played that I feel really out matched us.

With better leadership via Ryan and the new coaches I think this team has enough talent to win many games. We aren’t the flashiest of teams but we don’t need to be. We will be in the division race come the end of the year and that’s all we need to worry about right now.

  3. Will he decide he wants to come back, TBD.

I'm surprised at how many people are saying things like "Luck didn't love football", "Luck doesn't miss the game" etc. I really just don't believe any of those things. The dude is not the loudest guy in the room, that we know, but that doesn't mean his passion for the game is any less. Noise and showmanship != passion. Those just weren't aspects of his personality.

Football has been an integral part of his entire life, professionally and personally. Luck grew up on football, he's formed countless relationships and it's weaved into the fabric of who he is. I would be absolutely shocked if some of his greatest memories weren't on the football field. The dude played his * off for this team and other teams time and time again. You don't do that, you don't get to the highest level of this game if you aren't passionate about it.

I feel as if fans aren't putting enough significance on the state of his mental health. It is a very very serious thing. It has the absolute power to strip everything that you love most from you. Above all else I really think that this was the biggest reason in his decision. Not that his love for the game changed or that his heart wasn't ever really in it in the first place.

Do I think Luck misses the game, his teammates, the competitiveness, and the sheer amount of mastery you need to play at that level? Absolutely, he probably wishes everyday that things went differently.

Do I think he has interests in life other than football? Yes, I definitely agree with posters who have stated this. However, I think that is the same for many great players (including #18). It's that drive that helps make them so good in the first place.

Do I hope he comes back? Yes, I would be ecstatic to find out Luck has returned. Not only for the great football player he is but because I honestly believe that if it occurred it would mean that he's gotten a handle on his mental health as a person.

I went to over a decades worth of home games between RCA and Lucas oil stadiums and I have been saying this exact thing since the first game against the bears at LOS. People have denied it but it is validating to see several posters come out and agree. I've been told by fellow season ticket holders to not block their view or yell too loud many times.... I was told I was ruining their experience but my dad and I always took pride in standing and yelling on every single defensive play. It was not uncommon for the two of us to be the only ones doing so in our section.

Love to read this. Where are your seats? Friends and I will be joining you next year haha

I politely told him that I’m sorry but if they stood maybe the opponent would make even less third downs. I tried to be as political as possible being an out of towner and wanting to show respect to my elders but I was incapable of just sitting and not cheering.

I'm guessing there were wheelchairs or leg casts involved.....

Neither. Perhaps a bit older (late 50s-early 60s) but didn’t seem to have any issue getting up for restroom/concessions.

Not that everyone I’ve encountered is like that but I have felt in general it’s a way more conservative/docile crowd then what I’m used to back home.

Sanchez hasn't even done a good job punting and holding for Vinny this season...

I was just talking to a friend about how I haven't been impressed with his punting ability. He's got to be around in the bottom or at least below average in avg yards per punt. He definitely doesn't switch that field position on a team as much as one would like.

But hey, if he's an accurate place kicker, why not.

I agree with that 100%, i was skeptical before i opened it too.

The first penalty on Daruis was warranted, but the second one was petty AF

surprised we have not heard more about rogers' fumble, that was a killer

i have to agree on the Hoyer vs Brissett take too, been saying that all year really

Agree with the Hoyer Brissett take as well. I’m just not sold on the guy at all. I think that game ended up way closer then it would’ve been if Brissett was in.

  8. "And then we’ve gotta get more consistent out of our extra point and field goal units — and I say the entire unit, not just one player. I know people sometimes find this hard to believe, but one of the great things about football is it’s 11 players on the field, and they all have to execute their jobs for things to go right."

I know Vinny deserves some criticism but I agree with Chris here. Our blocking, snapping and holding has not been up to par AT ALL. That entire unit needs to step up. I'm not sold on our snapper or Rigo as the holder.

  9. I think you are seeing his snaps decreased as a product of Jacoby at QB and the run heavy scheme lends itself more to having Jack in there because he is definitely the better blocker.

I think Ebron's bread and butter are those intermediate 10-15 yard routes that he transforms into more. This happens to be an area I think Jacoby has struggled in significantly. Even when he's had guys wide open he's thrown some questionable balls (think of that completion to JD in Denver game where Jack had to essentially lay out for it). Often his throws are under 10 yards with the occasional bomb. This hurts players like Ebron.

IMO you could immediately see a difference from a sheer anticipating the throw standpoint as soon as Hoyer stepped in. That anticipation is incredibly important in those intermediate routes. I think you'll see MUCH more involvement from the TE's in that intermediate zone this week if Hoyer starts.

  10. Just said this in the other thread but I thought Hoyer played great other then the pick-6, which was more of a coverage issue rather then a poorly thrown ball.

I think the offense looked way smoother with Hoyer out there. He was decisive and the intermediate throws he made were something we haven't seen much of this year. That sideline bomb to Pascal was a beautiful throw. I honestly thought the Colts should've let him sling it a little more instead of running on 1st & 2nd.
