  1. You take that chance when you have confidence that your defense can stop the opponent if you don't convert. Our defense can't stop a cold now. There was no reason to take that chance backed up at your own 20 yard line down by 7.

No, this was the perfect time to take that chance.  Here's how I know...McDonald was WIDE OPEN.  So, that means their team had no idea it was coming.  About the same in that regard as McAfee's dribble kickoff.

The poor capabilities of our defense didn't factor in, here.  If they did, all the more reason to attempt it.  A punt puts our defense back on the field.

  2. I still think it was fine.  If McDonald makes the catch, I don't think people are that upset.  It's 100% on him

Agree.  I thought it was a brilliant call.  McDonald was wide open and already had the first down.  Just look the ball into your hands like you would a fair catch. A safety should be able to do that, easily.  The play was less risky and easier to convert than the on-side kick that Griff recovered.

  3. I think we'll be able to keep all that we want to keep.

The salary cap is about to go up.    Way up!

There will be room for all the players that we want -- even if Luck takes home $25 Mill per.....

Isn't that a wash, as other teams will have more money with which to sign away some of our players?

  4. Unless this is nothing more than a favor to Parkey, allowing him a chance to become a kicker on some other team that might actually want one, It would seem that this is an indication of the level of concern that the front office has with the offensive line.  I do still fully expect offensive line shopping right after final cuts.

  5. Yes they should consider him.  I'll bet they already have.

Then, they should reject the notion.

    Here's why, IMO.

During final cuts, out of necessity the Colts are going to cut a number of players that will find jobs as quality backup players (and maybe starters) on other rosters' final 53.  Among the most likely positions will be defensive front 7, wide receiver and tight end.

Likewise, most other teams are going to cut players who will become quality backup players in the league.  Some of those teams will cut quality offensive linemen.  I expect Grigs to be studying these players in advance and make his move when the opportunity comes.

No need to panic and bring in a cancer.

  6. I know this is easy to shoot holes in, but my brothers and I always say players at certain positions have to have the right name.  That is a good indicator of if they will succeed.  So, based on that, you gotta LOVE the Colts picks.

    1) Jack Mewhort - Wow, does that scream big, strong, nasty offensive lineman or what?   A+

    2) Donte Moncrief - Great WR name!  A+

    3) Jonathan Newsome - Ok, he might turn out to be good, but too generic of a name for a LB   C

    4) Andrew Jackson - Throw "Stonewall" in the mix and you got LB name who hits!   B+

    5) Ulrich John - Sounds like a European guitar virtuoso.  Maybe play like Buckethead or Malmsteen. Not block  D-

So overall, based on names, I am really happy with the draft.  I think we did well.

Andrew Jackson has a great football name for a defensive player.  After a hard tackle, Lamey will say that the Colts laid some Hickory on the ball carrier.  I give it an A+.

  7. While our Colts played well today, a huge thank you should go out to me. Our first game was last year against kc which resulted in a win. Our second game in San Francisco; again, a win. Our third was today. Obviously a win. I'm 3-0. Season ticket holders, take one for the team and hand over your tickets.

I want to personally thank you for two things...

    1) First and foremost, for the Colts victory.  Without your attendance, this may never have happened.

    2) For your old-school, correct spelling of the word "you're" in the thread title.

  8. This topic isn't silly. I'm just asking if anyone thinks he can throw seven tds. Now if I asked do you think he could throw 50 in a game that would be silly.

Actually, you asked if he could throw more than 7, if I know what "top" means.

So, yes, the topic is pretty silly.  You were asking if Luck can do something Sunday which has never been done in the history of the NFL.  So, the answer is yes, he could.  It is possible, though so extremely unlikely as to be, well, silly to even think about.  That's why you got so many "who cares" responses.

Seems more important to most fans here to just get the expected W without any significant injury so we can move on.

  9. He's already playing the slot. A lot last year, and from what I'm hearing, even more this year.

Makes perfect sense, DHB and TY or Fleener on the outside, Reggie going against the dime or a LB? That's gold Jerry, gold!

Okay, settle down, Bania.  Actually, I think you're right.

  10. Not that great of a blog, IMHO, but here's where I agree completely with the writer...

"in a tough conference, a wildcard birth for the Colts seems extremely unlikely."

Frankly, a pregnancy with even a single Colts player would completely shock me, toughness of the conference notwithstanding.

  11. I'm very pleased to have Irsay as the Colts owner.  I consider him to be one of the best owners in the NFL.

Irsay has also demonstrated a trait of generosity over the years.

That said. In this case he's making a donation to essentially maintain a satellite Colts' fan club.  Any decent Colts fan club is in the best financial interest of the franchise.

  12. I don't believe that football is doomed, but they do need to do more to prevent injuries. My unpopular suggestion is to install slower playing surfaces. IMO the game will still be exciting if the players' speed is 10-15% slower. That's probably as fast as it was when Jim Brown played. Passing, blocking, tackling and strategy are mainstays to the game. You can get speed at a track meet.

Even with slower speeds and better helmets, football's inherently dangerous. If the players are all told that upfront and given concussion and other injury statistics, then the NFL should be held harmless. Get a real job with a normal paycheck then, if you prefer.

  13. He was due for a base salary of around 490K . I would imagine the Colts would sign a player to replace him for the 2012 minimum salary of 390 K. So they pick up 100K in cap space there. His signing bonus was 163K . The Colts have 2 years left of prorated bonus payment for that cap hit. So half of 163K ( 2 years of a 4 year contract) woud be around 82K. That hit or gain all goes against this years (2012) cap as he's being released before June 1st. If it was after June first part would go for 2012 and part for 2013.

So to answer your question if you don't feel like doing the math..

cap hit for 2012 (assuming he is replaced with a player getting league minimum) would be about a plus 8K. so i guess not really a "hit."

cap hit for next year is nada

there is no cap hit for next year

My figures come from googling the contract he signed 4 years ago. Sometimes they are off but in any event , this is pretty much a non issue as far as cap money

    Thanks for the info.

  14. Really??? All the football going on today and this is how you choose to contribute ....

Seems like a worthwhile contribution to me. Is it too much to expect elementary school language skills? "Should of been" is annoying to me, too. I get tired of seeing it over and over again, along with "loose" and a dozen others. I say if someone can't spell something basic, do a quick Google search.

Besides, what's the great value in the repeated "Horrible pick!" posts from people who really have no idea?
