  1. A few questions people have:

    1) How will Jordan Matthews be available at 58? He might not be. I did a bunch of mocks on a couple different websites, and he was available about 70% of the time, so I decided to make him my pick. That obviously might not work out. And as more information becomes available from the Shrine game and the Senior Bowl, along with the Combine and pro days, a lot of this pre-draft stuff will change. I'll do another update in a few weeks, I'm sure.

    2) Same story for Aaron Colvin. I don't know if he falls out of the draft entirely, but it's not outside the realm of possibility, seeing as how he just tore his ACL. He's a PUP candidate, for sure, and likely won't be able to play at all in 2014. There are a lot of corners in this draft that can compete for a spot right away, and a lot of teams that need corner depth. So I'm assuming he makes it through the draft. If that becomes unreasonable before my next update, I'll cross him off. (Same for the rest of my UDFAs.)

    3) Yeah, I kept Bethea. I've been one of the main ones complaining about him. But I don't think we can afford to sign any of the FA safeties that are clearly better than him, and I think he'd stay with the Colts for a reasonable price. The value for drafting a safety wasn't there for me, especially not when I think I can get Darby late, who I really like.

I think if we get some cap savings for hasselbeck we could afford a better safety. Also even in the same league just much younger I would consider Nate Allen

  2. Not sure if this has been posted or if I have missed anything on an extension given to him, but what about Chris Clemons? He surely wouldn't cost as much as Byrd, but wouldn't be a huge drop off in ability. He would give Landry more of a chance to get down in the box and be the hitter that he is, and not place him on an island trying to cover.

    Just a thought.

I still struggle with dropping Toler, I know financially we can make it happen, but him and Vontae looked good once they got into a groove before the injury. And I just don't think we would have the funds to drop that much money in the secondary, that puts too much weight on 4 positions that would then also have 0 depth. I would rather keep Toler, draft a CB in the 2nd or 3rd, give Gordy some more chances and maybe pick up Corey Graham from the Ravens or Chris Cook from Minnesota.

  3. so basically Brown is better with a OLine that doesn't block very well.  That was last year.  Next year, the goal is to improve the OLine and create better run blocking holes.  This is where Donald Brown no longer makes sense.  Times are a changin and next year TRich will be the man

TRich will be the man next year no matter what. And it has nothing to do with the size of the holes that are made for DB. it is all about the scheme of the runs. Man Schemes are just, run to this spot, the hole will be there, if not either kick outside or push through.

ZBS the run is aimed at a "Zone" of the OL or to an area, It is built more for patience thus why you see Trent stutter step alot, waiting for a hole to open up and him to be able to cut to it and go. We saw a few times this year that Trent can cut back on a dime, if we put a ZBS in place and get him more in his comfort zone, I have no doubt he will flourish.

  4. Do you people not remember Donald Brown a season or 2 ago?  He was freakin awful and we all wanted him gone.  He then has one good year (his contract year) and you act like he is irreplaceable...  We have seen what a difference a few years can do for Donald Brown, so why are you acting like it is impossible for Trent Richardson to get better?  Brown hit his ceiling this year and will only go down hill.  TRich/Ballard is the direction we need to go and i am glad we are doing it.   I hope we can bring back Bradshaw on a low risk contract also.

This is where you are wrong though, Brown has always had a high ceiling, but we were forcing a square peg into a round hole with him. Last year when he ran with some of the Man Blocking fronts he excelled, until he was hurt. He has always had the big play ability just wasn't given the chances.

Brown was never a ZBS back, he isn't one to read the line and find the best hole. He was a "Here is the hole, run down hill and use your speed to throw the angles of the defense off" back. He has the ability to get "Small" and squirt through small hole. Thus why he excelled even more this year.

Trent is the opposite. He is a patient runner that is looking for "the Best" hole to open. The main problem he had in our system is that the holes are small and not open long enough for you to be patient. You have to hit it quick and get small, which Trent can do neither of those things. At this point, the only way that Trent is going to get better is for us to switch to a ZBS.

Brown was never BAD, a) people just had no idea what they were looking at, and due to injury he couldn't fully show them what he could do. b) He was being used the wrong way, just as Trent is now.

  5. Most of that money comes from the salary we WERE paying Toler.

Re-sign Davis, but then go out there and find a different CB in FA and cut Toler.  Say we pay someone like Shields 6 million.  Only 2 million of that is taken out of our free cap space because we where paying Toler 4 million.

At the very least I hope they draft a CB in the 2nd round and keep Toler.  And then when Toler inevitably goes down with an injury in the 3rd game of the season the rookie can come in, play at least as well as Toler and keep him on the field.

You mention Gordy a lot.  He's not gonna get paid much, his salary isn't even worth mentioning in this discussion.

Based on other Contracts, I would guess Davis will demand 8-9.5 M. Then your saying sign another Corner for $6M. Add in Butler at $2.5M and our CB Depth after that would be Sheldon Price and Marcus Burley.

With the other holes that we have to fill I just don't see the point in spending the extra 2M on another corner. Especially when seeing that we will need a new FS, ILB, and DL help.

  6. If they sign for 1 or 2 million more it wouldn't be a big deal as long as they stay on the field and play well.

Again, where are we going to get that money, what position are we going to skimp on to afford it. Also, what happens if we lose Vontae and Toler. That would be losing 4 Cbs in one year, we would basically just have Butler and a bunch of scrubs.

  7. There are lots of free agent CB's on the market who are good enough to start.

    http://walterfootball.com/freeagents2014CB.php

Toler counts for 4.8 million against the cap and we can save 4.2 million by cutting him.

He has an injury history before us and spent the vast majority of the season injured to the point that we would have been better off putting him on IR.

And I didn't see anything from in him that made me think he's worth 4.2 million even while on the field.  The only memorable play he ever made with us was during pre-season.

The Problem isn't getting another CB, it would be having to get 2 CBs. Vontae is an FA as is Gordy. We can not afford to keep Vontae AND give big money to another FA CB. That is why everyone grasping at us cutting Toler are going to be greatly disappointed. It just won't happen.

  8. I would try all I can to sign Donald Bulter away from SD, then go for a safety like Kendrick Lewis or Nate Allen. Might end up having to let Bethea walk. re-sign Vontae and draft a CB to build up. I think that will go a long way. Butler would give us a solid pass covering LB and we could let Freeman do more blitzing that way. Lewis and Allen are both fairly solid in pass coverage and then we could put Landry in more of a position to roam closer to the line and not in coverage.

We won't be able to afford 2 high priced CBs in one year, so people have to just understand that Toler will be here next year, no matter what.

  9. I really think a lot of you that are saying, "Let Brown walk", are going to be disappointed when he is gone. Neither Ballard or Richardson have his speed, and we will miss that next year. I can't remember who posted them last year, but the stats before DB went down showed him as one of the best backs after first contact in the league and we see that continuing this year.

If he ends up going to another team with an OL that can open holes, you are going to see a top back in the league, and I have no doubt in my mind about that. And then we will be here watching Trent get tackled by 1 foot after gaining two yards, but man will those two yards look like an epic effort.

  10. Trent is not Donald. He is getting the same treatment, the one thing i don't see with him is the ability to run past people. Trent just needs to keep his momentum going forward and stop the stutter step. That is the same thing Addai and Donald did up until thus year. The jump cut crap, it kills their momentum, and it works for some guys, but not all. Edge could do it and accelerate fast, where Trent can't. I would almost bet that is what he was taught in Cleveland and now he just has to relearn how to not do it. You can see Donald just running downhill now, and see how much better of a back that he is.

Give him time, i think he will show us all what he can do once he gets out of that habit.

  11. I really don't see many players that could fall in the 2nd round that I rate much higher than Fleener. WR there are solid starters that can be had in rounds 3-5. I am really not much of a fan of any of the 2nd round rated corners. The DTs that we would need should still be available in 3rd round or later. So as long as Hill or Wright don't fall to this pick, which I can't see happening, Fleener seems like a no brainer.

  12. I agree with all those except 6,7 and 9

Actually Reason 9 is the main issue that RG3 has. He can't sense the pressure very well at this point. Since he was running a spread most of his plays were 1 read and fire. His internal clock is not fully developed like Luck's is. The reason this is the main worry, in my opinion, is he is going to take a few more hits than Luck, and with his smaller stature that could lead to injuries. Not saying he will get injured, but that would be my main fear in drafting him.

As we all saw for years with PM, its not about the OL protecting the QB as much as it is the QB knowing how to feel that pressure and how much time he has before he is going to get clocked. So instead of getting hammered and taking a big hit because he isn't ready for it, PM would feel the pressure before it got there and make a slight movement and/or prepare for the hit so he wouldn't get clocked, thus saving him from injury for all those years. I honestly think that played about 80% in Manning being and ironman for as long as he was.
