I understand how folks feel when we aren't swinging for the fences but this front office is different and is not going to change no matter how much 'fans' want them to. It starts with Irsay believing in Ballard's plan and approach to roster building. So one really needs to take in the whole offseason to truly understand why our FO is one of the best in the business.....my humble opinion of course!

    1. The roster as it was at the beginning of the OFFSEASON was missing a few things, however, it is still a playoff caliber roster prior to the offseason shenanigans started.

    2. Instead of focusing solely on free agency 'fans' should focus on all aspects of the roster building process from FA to Trades to the Draft to the UDFA period to roster cut down day......

    3. Re-signing our own productive players is usually a good practice to follow, so re-signing Tell, Dulin, Cox, Franklin, Lewis and Pryor was good for the roster. This is far too often overlooked ESPECIALLY when the new Defensive Coordinator identified the players he wanted to retain for his new defensive scheme.

    4. Then the three trades where Ballard dumped Wentz on the Commanders, then used a 3rd on Ryan and lastly - Ya-Sin for Ngakoue - all of which were brilliant moves in and of itself but then the rest of the picture that unfolds after these trades is spectacular too.

    5. The FO then signs Facyson and Gilmore as our number one and number two corners to add to Moore as the NB is going to be HUGE for this defense.

    6. Signing Rodney McLeod is an under the radar signing of a very solid veteran safety that has started over 100 games in his past. The veteran presence in the video room, on the practice field and mixed and matched with our other young players like Willis and Blackman (and now Cross) on the field will pay dividends.

    7. The signings of Tony Brown, Armani Watts and Brandon King shouldn't go unnoticed either as they are all excellent special teamers - which only helps us retain our highly rated special teams units.

    8. Then the draft happened and they added 8 guys that will fill specific needs on the roster as starters, depth or future starters to replace aging veterans. Most notably among them is the Z WR, Y TE and LT. Cross in my opinion will become what Hooker was supposed to be as a true deep safety in the cover 3. Ogletree is likely Cox's long term replacement. The two DLineman will provide immediate depth and Thomas II sounds very much like a Marvell Tell conversion to CB in the making.

    9. Then the UDFA period hit and man did we bring in some very talented players with draftable grades on them......Safety's Trevor Denbow, and Sterling Weatherford; CB Dallis Flowers; LB's Domann, Ryhne and Skalski; DE's Patchan and Wick; QB Jack Coan; RB's Borghi, Price and Verdell; OLineman French, Mollette, Glaser, Seltzner and Van Demark;

Of these fella's Sterling Weatherford and JoJo Domann  both have a real chance at the Kam Chancellor position in Gus Bradley's scheme (if they are trying to recreate the Legion of Boom of course) with the draftee Nick Cross playing the Deep Safety role.

Jack Coan has a solid chance of earning QB2 over Ehlinger and most certainly a spot on the PS as the scout team QB.

At least one of those RB's has a chance to make the squad as the 3rd RB - most likely Price in my mind because he is the bigger, every down back should they need one to spell JT. Hines is already the skatback so to me that makes Borghi PS material.

On the Oline Van Demark has an excellent opportunity to earn the Swing Tackle role at the very least. The other guys listed have an opportunity to earn PS roles as interior OLinemen based off of their talent levels.

    10. Honorable mentions go out to the signings of Jordan Murray and Brandon Kemp as they will have a say so in who ends up in that swing tackle role as well.....

just too many maybe they will be good and unproven talent and wishful thinking to compete with the proven talent titans, a typical ballard roster

Ballard has traded Carson Wentz and Rock Ya Sin for:

    Matt Ryan and Yannick Ngakoue

    AND

moved up 9 spots in the second and third round

    AND

received a third (probable second) round pick next year.

I will take same old same old everyday of the week and twice on Sunday, no other GM pulls that off.

les snead does so much better

I agree. Folks need to appreciate what they have. Meddling owners like Dan Snyder are awful. I like Ballard's approach to building a team. I like that he builds through the draft and does not sign a "Dream Team". Folks need to give it a little time to slowly build the team.

i like the way the rams build no delayed gratification there

From an improvement standpoint I do think that is attainable as well, although I would like to see Kelly get a real shot. That being said even with an improvement at QB, Colts still need to address the skill positions so the QB can have better chances at success. Speaking of Rivers, there's no way he would come in here and it be a massive difference as some suggested it would without those skill position improvements when Rivers had better skill positions and couldn't get it done in Diego/LA.

true we have no one like watson has with hopkins, watson can throw down field anywhere close to hopkins and he will get it, hard to beat that combo with our receivers

You have to first improve your odds of winning the division.  Rivers (or another) would improve those odds over Brissett.

That's what I want.   An improvement.  It'd only be for 2 years and they have the cap space.   Then they would not have to draft a QB this year.   Draft Kinlay to immediately improve the line, draft one of the plethora of good WR's and maybe a TE.

Ballard kind of had to trade down for a couple years to stock the team that was so void of good players.  I hope he's ready to go for it now.

    it is past time

Guys and Girls, as I asked/stated in response to @Myles this team has no skill players at any position. Think about it from an honest perception and not from a homer standpoint.

Doyle is serviceable but nothing spectacular.

Mack behind any other O-Line not as good as ours, is average at best or below.

Ty is above average, but is 31-32, and has started to show signs of wear down. I doubt we see him play another 16-17 game season in full the remainder of his career.

Campbell, who knows at this point.

Pascal, Funchess, Rodgers, Fountain, whoever...Just a bunch of JAGS

Mo-Cox, short of a comic catch phrase is taking up space.

Hines, where did this guy disappear to?

This is my point. Where are the skill players to win a SB?

This team is not just a couple guys away and don't give me examples of how a couple other teams have won with less. That's lightening in a bottle mentality and though it might happen, it should never be used in a true reflection of what is staring you in the face.

I agree, ballards method of trading down in the draft means that we are getting players with less chance of being elite skill players, this team is full of players who would not start on the top teams. ballards non use of the cap money to sign elite talent means we will just sign average free agents. no i dont think ballards low cost method will ever put us at the top of our division and we wont be in any super bowl with his low cost trading down method.

Houston and Turay ARE game changers.
Banogu should be better and Lewis has a lot to prove but should be a solid contibutor.
I hope we move on from Sheard. I could see a 3rd rd edge prospect being added.
What Ballard does know is that our edge players would be greatly helped by a couple of high quality interior players.

you have a good point our middle does need to push more

  8. 10 minutes ago, throwing BBZ said:

     No.
We are solid with our current Houston, and other prospects.
I can't see Ballard not addressing bigger needs with our first 3 picks.

ballard wont draft by need he will take the best player available at any position or trade down if he gets what he thinks is a deal. yes we desperately need more pressure from our edge and the current players are not game changers

Read all of the WR reviews on NFL.com's new combine list, so decided to parse it by projected position and post. I've linked the profile to the prospect name for those that would like to read up on specific guys. They did a better job this year on the write ups IMO.

The red are guys I like. I know we're likely not taking a WR in R1, so the lower graded reds are the guys I'd like to target in the later rounds. Some really nice prospects should be available. If you think I have slotted guys incorrectly (projected position), let me know.

IMO if Ballard likes him enough to get him at 13 he will like him enough to jump in front of the Raiders.

Also, the QBs past R2 are huge wild shots. If he takes one, I wouldn't expect much of him and I definitely wouldn't consider him our next QB. I would consider it a lottery ticket.

most draft picks or lottery tickets, no sure things, remember leaf and trent

I get that, but people on here are screaming for Jordan Love because he compares to Mahomes.  NEWS FLASH... There is no next Mahomes.  The man is a once in a generation player, people will lose there jobs overdrafting and overreaching for players that "compare" to him.

Also Jimmy G was headed towards winning the SuperBowl until Shanahan mucked it up, lol.  They had the lead with 6 minutes left and the Chiefs had yet to stop the run.  The Niners did that job for them and put the ball in Jimmy G's hands for no reason.  He would have won them the game had they pounded the rock like had been doing all game, and he was on track to throw for just over 200 yards.  Jimmy G is perfect for what they want to do and they will be back next year competing for the SuperBowl.

What I have started saying and now truly believe, The Colts just need a QB that fits what Ballard and Reich want to do, which in my opinion is to run the ball, be efficient on offense, play good defense and don't turn the ball over.  It doesn't have to be Mahomes or Manning.  If that is in the draft, then go and get him, if that is an "Improved" JB then so be it. If it is Derek Carr, make the move.  Just find who fits the Colts and lets roll.  I will support however that is.

i agree great post, plus surround the qb with a few game changing free agents

I would say you could put the same tagline against all of them:

"Promising start, but jury is still out".

I think they all had flashes of what they could be, but didn't see it consistently from any of them.  As with all rookies, the 2nd year will be big for them, but especially Parris after a hellish year full of injuries.

Certainly no write-offs as of yet.

i agree, there are no game changers among them, just average guys

I am really anxious to see what free agents Ballard signs, Who will be the big one he chooses. (Chris Jones please)

Ballard has not had a history of signing elite young high dollar talent , could that be the reason we have a team filled with a lot of just average talent, draft picks are a crap shoot, with ballards system of filling the roster with draft picks and cheap free agents we are going downhill in our division
