Let's see how they stack up statistically.

1986 Chicago Bears (statistically better than the '85 team in some aspects): gave up 187 points, 4130 yards, 47 takeaways, 62 sacks in 16 games

    1976 Steelers: 138 points, 3323 yards, 46 takeaways, 41 sacks in 14 games

    2000 Ravens: 165 points, 3967 yards, 49 takeaways, 35 sacks in 16 games

    2002 Buccaneers: 196 points, 4044 yards, 38 takeaways, 43 sacks in 16 games

    2013 Seahawks: 231 points, 4378 yards, 39 takeaways, 44 sacks in 16 games

    2015 Broncos: 296 points, 4530 yards, 27 takeaways, 52 sacks in 16 games

Taking per game averages gives us:

    1986 Bears: 11.69 ppg, 258.1 ypg, 2.94 takeaways/game, 3.88 sacks/game

    1976 Steelers: 9.86 ppg, 255.6 ypg, 3.29 takeaways/game, 2.93 sacks/game

    2000 Ravens: 10.3 ppg, 247.9 ypg, 3.06 takeaways/game, 2.19 sacks/game

    2002 Bucs: 12.25 ppg, 252.8 ypg, 2.38 takeaways/game, 2.69 sacks/game

    2013 Seahawks: 14.44 ppg, 273.6 ypg, 2.44 takeaways/game, 2.75 sacks/game

    2015 Broncos: 18.50 ppg, 283.1 ppg, 1.69 takeaways/game, 3.25 sacks/game

Looking at those statistics, the Broncos defense is only all-time elite when it comes to pass rush.  When you look at points given up, yards given up, and takeaways, they rank last among the defense listed above.  That doesn't mean the defense isn't great, but I hesitate to call them an all-time great defense.

Something that gets lost in all that - most of those teams actually had an offense that wasn't completely terrible. Hell, some of those offenses were pretty damn good like the Steelers. The Bears had Walter Payton.

What makes BAL and DEN's defenses so impressive was that they were constantly on the field thanks to their inept offense. At least BAL could run the ball sometimes, but DEN was dreadful. I have never seen a team as allergic to FINISHING DRIVES as DEN.

DEN's MO all season was they'd run run run for 2 yards forward or backward 90% of the time and then finally break out a long run or two per game. That's it. In the passing game they'd get the occasional big play to enemy territory and then * the drive away. Even with special teams/the defense getting DEN great field position they usually squandered it.

Given the constant pressure put on DEN by their god awful offense, I'm inclined to put them pretty close to the 2000 Ravens.

In the Dungy/Harrison HOF thread I mentioned this.  They few times the Colts had a healthy and talented DT, they were incredibly strong on defense.  But without it, teams would just run down the middle all day.

Pretty much the reason we won the SB in 2006 was because of a big ol' Booger to clog up that middle!

  3. God tier: 2000 Ravens. They gave up like 3 points a game.

Ridiculous tier in no particular order:

    2004 Patriots

    '85 Bears

Steel Curtain (All of those years)

    2015 Broncos

    2013 Seahawks

    2002 Bucs

^I'd say all of those were close enough to be a tie. The 2000 Ravens still stand out to me as unquestionably the flat out best.

The 2003 Pats were crazy good too, but not like 2004.

  4. And, as always, 2 > ****. Hell so is 1. Not that it matters, because rings don't mean jack squat.

I'd still take Marino over either of them. Moss is the best WR to ever play without stickum, Barry Sanders is the best RB, Calvin Johnson will retire without one and he's a machine.

Until Gronk showed up, Tony Gonzalez was undisputed as the best TE to ever play. He never even played in a SB to my knowledge.

None of them have a ring because their TEAMS were usually hot garbage.

More that the nfl rigged it for manning.  Much like the claims for ray Lewis and Jerome Bettis.  Great stories make money.

Denver's defense rigged it for Peyton by making the best three offenses in football look like chumps in back to back to back games.

    PIT---->NE----->CAR

Already sites claiming the SB was rigged for manning to win this one.

Yet CAR were the beneficiaries of two clearly bogus personal fouls. One should have been offsetting (Talib) at minimum. The "late hit" on Newton was a joke.

DEN obviously paid the refs to call those 6-7 false starts, and delay of game, and Newton's fumbles too.

In their prime, Mathis and Freeney were just as good. If not better.

Hard to tell, honestly. Freeney and Mathis never had the benefit of an absurd interior line like DEN has. In fact, ours was terrible most years and we'd get run over. Freeney would often run himself out of plays while runners/QB's could just go down our throat, limiting he and Mathis often.

I used to think Mathis and Freeney were the best outside rushers until I saw Miller and Ware. They are in a different class.

    Absolutely nasty.

Ware is not as good as he used to be, but the guy has a brain like no other. He and Miller combined are flat out deadly.

The interior of the line prevents anyone from escaping up the middle. They have a field day every week. That entire defensive unit is LOADED. Depth is a concern, but when healthy they have no equal in the league.

    felt rigged to me

How so? The "late hit" flag for hitting Newton while he was still running for a free 15 yards? The personal foul on only Talib even though the Panther put his finger in Talib's facemask mocking him?

Both teams got away with stuff, if anything CAR got the most egregious bogus call all night. Then when they couldn't do jack against Denver's defense, they got desperate. 6-7+ false starts and a delay of game? That's self inflicted and obvious. They % the bed.

Exactly. He'll grow out of this.

Or he'll be a self-absorbed diva who can't handle when things don't go his way. We'll see. He acts like a WR sometimes with all the showboating.

Cam is a very good QB, but he needs to get over himself and learn to conduct himself like a professional.

That wasn't a tantrum. He was just responding to a bad break on the field. Don't try to make something out of nothing.

You missed the crying to the ref for a "personal foul" near the end of the game that wasn't a personal foul.

Neither was the one where he ran and got blasted, but was given a 15 yard gift for a "late hit" BEFORE HIS KNEE WAS DOWN.

  12. With that defense even if Ware goes, DEN can repeat with any game manager under center.

The defense will be close to as good next year if not the same. DEN's offense can only improve, because they're abysmal.

I'd start by cutting Droparyius Thomas. All that money vanishes in big games.

Now, it's our turn Indianapolis. Let's go get that elusive great defense to go with Andrew Luck!

I like your wishful thinking, but keeping Pagano and his  "monster" isn't the best start. At this point I'd be grateful for an O-line that doesn't get Luck early retirement.

  14. I knew CAR had a good defense. I knew DEN had a GREAT defense and could make it a game, but I didn't think DEN would dominate CAR's offense for 4 quarters. They did the same thing against NE, too.

CAR is the more balanced team. Good offense, good defense. I thought they'd win.   The more you think about it, DEN's offense is so bad it doesn't really matter how good the other's team defense is because DEN's O makes opposing D's look like the 85 Bears every week. It's all on Denver's defense. Pretty damn amazing what they did this season. Carried that team HARD for 19 games. (Aside from the GB one where the offense did something.)

  15. All I know is....

    "THIS ONE'S....FOR PEYTON!"

I've said all year Denver will go as far as that D can take them, because the offense is dreadful outside of Sanders. Apparently that's all the way to the Lombardi! That's an amazing feat for that team...most notably the entire defense.

    Defense.

    Wins.

Championships. Or at least they're the biggest contributer most of the time.
