The Grigson/Pagano era was a disappointment. Massive fail is well overstating it.

That said, if they had played it right, this team could have grabbed control of the AFC for a few years, and made life easier on Luck, and we could be in much better position than we are.

Moving forward, this new regime needs to compete for AFC championships and SBs regularly. Irsay wants two SBs, and I think that's a lofty but attainable goal for a team with a franchise level QB. The defense has a lot of work to do, but the offense is coming along nicely.

    Overstating it? Lord.

We're rebuilding with a 29 year old generational QB.

People can scream 11-5 from the rooftops , it doesn't change the fact it was a huge set-back in our ultimate goal of competing for championships.

How many coaches and GM's could've: a) done what Pagano/Grigson did ; and b) done a better job?

    Answer : a lot

Look at Pagano's record outside of our trash division.

"massive fail". Now that is the definition of spoiled.....

Why? We almost ruined a generational QB with incompetence. I don't care if people point to the win-loss record. There's plenty of GM/Coaches that could've done what they did with Luck.

The reason we're rebuilding at this stage of Luck's career is because ? The reason Grigson is considered a clown within the NFL is because? Same applies with Pagano.

  3. I don't take it as being spoiled at all. In 1998 we were lucky enough to take a generational QB. In 2012 the same thing happened.

Most franchises would kill to have that kind of fortune. We got the golden ticket - twice. I feel it's our duty to compete for championships when you get QB's of this level. The Grigson/Pagano era was a massive fail and an embarrassing waste of Andrew's career, but I believe we're rectifying it now.

Only winning one with Peyton isn't ideal , and I hope we learn from our past mistakes with Manning and apply them to the Luck era. (ie give him a better defense/balanced roster)

We'll see what happens , but have a good feeling about 12 and the direction this franchise is going. One step at a time

I'm not putting a number on it. I just want us to become a playoff team again first.

Last thing, there's a big difference between grading and scouting. Grading takes what you see and assigns a value to it; scouting includes projecting the unknown, and requires more talent and skill than grading.

Which is why I almost never take their mock drafts seriously. It's almost always pushing "their guys" (which to be fair , they're pretty honest about) with a tone of arrogance against the old-guard NFL evaluators.

I am not addressing their analytics, they may be fine.  Their grades on players are very suspect.

A lot of their immediate grades (like the day after a game) comes from TV tape.

Which, for positions like the OL , is just impossible.

I appreciate what they do , but articles saying stuff like "James White not Todd Gurley is the RB MVP" , just throw me off.

Like anything , you need to have your own filter and find the stuff you value/trust - because it is there.

  6. lol , I don't think anything triggers me more than the term "trap game" this season.

That aside, the Jags will love nothing more than to ruin our recent run of success. Again, as I said before the Dolphins game, lets respect the ability of the opposition (they are a talented squad- I don't care what their record says).

I feel like their vindictive spirit will get them up for one last game , and then they'll tank the rest of the way.

Lets break them , but understand there's every chance this won't be easy.

  7. See , I think people are looking at this wrong.

    1) The rule changes have made it easier for lesser talents to become productive more than ever. It used to be that you needed an elite skill position player to get elite production , but now , similar to the QB position , marginal talents can be productive.

    2) Skill position players are the easiest to acquire later in the draft and in FA/trades. Everyone is in love with KC right now , but if you actually look at their skill position players , it shows this :

    RB- Kareem Hunt 3rd round
    RB- Spencer Ware Free Agent
    RB-Damien Williams Free Agent

    TE- Travis Kelce 3rd round

    WR- Tyreek Hill 5th round
    WR- Sammy Watkins Free Agent
    WR- Chris Conley 4th round
    WR- Demarcus Robinson 5th round

And this is the franchise Ballard is coming from. It's clear their ethos is to spend high draft capital in the positions hardest to fill . ie: impact defenders/big men.

It's much harder to find/acquire impact players in the trenches. Big men that can play are becoming unicorns. Every draft is deep with skill positions. Every draft. And every year you can acquire skill position upgrades in FA or via trade. Look at the past trade deadline if you want some recent examples.

    3) We have the 4th highest scoring offense in the league right now. That's right , with the nobodies and dudes Ballard found off the street , we have an offense that's borderline elite. What does that tell you? Think about it.

    4) Outside of QB play , rushing the passer is clearly the most important facet of the game now. It's not even close. Coverage sacks are becoming extinct , and if you can't create interior disruption , your defense is dead. The truly rare players -the ones hardest to get-- are impact DL. And you're telling me in a historically strong DL class , we should be taking a receiver? Why?

Yes, we should definitely upgrade our receivers, but no, it doesn't require us to use our 1st. Not at all.

  8. I was intrigued by Ebron , similarly like I was intrigued by Sammy Watkins in FA. A high draft pick loaded with talent and physical ability that wasn't in an ideal environment to prosper.

One got a reasonable deal , the other didn't.

Happy with our guy. Well done Ballard.
