  1. Saw some decent pressure yesterday but my main question is what Reich's thoughts were on Lewis being a healthy scratch.   :dunno:

Might be an overly simple conclusion, but I thought he could have made a difference on stopping the run for us while still getting interior pass rush.

  2. In the cold light of day on Monday morning, there are certainly positives to take.  The main one being that, if we have just eliminated 2 or 3 small individual errors yesterday we would have beaten a very good Chargers team on the road.

Take it as a learning opportunity and move onto next week with confidence in our QB and belief the :goat: will be back to his usual self after an off day.

I'm still surprised we let our OLC go last year after such tremendous improvement.

I love HM, and this is a bit concerning. Too much change IMO. If there's regression, I won't be surprised. Hope not....

I think there was a lot of love for guge last year in the building and the improvement was there to see. Reich obviously just had Strausser in mind as "his guy" and seems (at least from the outside) to be perceived as more of a teacher for these guys, which is a key philosophy of Reich.

Guge just potentially wasn't the right fit but left on good terms I believe.

To be honest I don't think a 77 year old deciding to take a step back is much of a concern, all the best to him and I am sure he left his mark on the guys.

  4. Seems like a non-issue. We brought in Strausser as our choice and it seemed like there was a link from him to Mudd as some kind of mentor which meant Mudd came back with things lining up with the colts too.

it's still Strausser's unit and I am sure Mudd had a positive impact over the pre season but can't imagine it will have a big impact with him leaving.

  5. So I have just moved house and only just managed to get my Gamepass up and running.  Sat down to watch the new season of the "Film Room" sessions they do with Baldy and Jaws (could be its own cop show right there!).

Anyway, who is up first......Andrew Luck

Watching it now, knowing what we know, it makes so little sense to me what has happened.  Talking about his joy for the game, his health being great, his love of Reich, TY and other team mates......this was only back at the Pro Bowl!

Was an enjoyable watch, yet a painful one at the same time, seeing all these clips of NFL players talking about how much of a phenomenon he is.  Just had me thinking......

  6. Not sure if I have missed any reports but I have not heard the same "buzz" around Cain as there was before his injury.  No one was saying he was looking poor or slow or anything like that, just seemed more focussed on Fountain this year.

The reaction from Reich in the draft room tells me there are big plans for Campbell this year.

  7. Very well articulated @NewColtsFan and I understand your frustration and desire for answers.

I do wonder if we will ever get 100% of the truth as Luck is such an incredibly private person, maybe more so than any other modern day athlete.  We have seen him bristle at questions about injuries etc before and you can see he hates being vulnerable in front of others.

I also understand the "why didn't he take a sabbatical" queries based on this injury being minor compared to the labrum.  However I always think back to Irsay's "between the ears" comment a year or so ago that so many thought was outrageous.  I also think the team would be worse off if Andrew just took a sabbatical as we now know we all have to get fully behind Jacoby and not just think "ah well, at least Andrew is back soon" like a cloud over Brissett all year.

I wonder if the press conference that had been arranged for the Sunday would have provided more answers than the hastily arranged one after the pre season game if Luck had been able to read a prepared statement or been given more time to think about what he really wanted to say, but I guess we will never know on that front.

Oh to have 15 minutes with Andrew and get some real answers....

Not for me.  Andrew Luck fit really well in with that old-timey, squirrel-oil using, neck-bearding tomfoolery.

Brissett doesn't fit that mould for me.  Can't think of any NFL QB who would, aside from maybe Fitmagic?

I’m honestly afraid to buy another jersey. Every player I get seems to get injured/retire/leave the team the season after.

    Austin Collie

    Dallas Clark

    Anthony Gonzalez

    Bob Sanders

    Peyton Manning

    Andrew Luck

    I’m the curse, apparently.

We could have used you a few years ago......could all have chipped in and got you a jersey with "Grigson" on the back! haha

  10. So, I have two Andrew Luck jerseys at home and, in the theory of having to move on with our lives, I am now thinking about who I would want on a new jersey. :dunno:

My front runners are Big Q and Leonard, but wondering what you guys would pick if you were picking one up today?

I have kept "Legends" out of it for now as would muddy the waters.

  11. There was a good one I saw where a guy had taken his Luck jersey and, on the back above the name, he had written "Well....." and then he changed one letter on the surname to complete the thought (not posting image for obvious reasons-don't want a ban just before the season starts!).

That summed up my thoughts exactly. haha

    Hmmmm...

    Bert Jones type of fashion?

In my head I compare it to Barry Sanders.  Phenomenal talents, made a huge impacts on the field when they played (although both held back by surrounding talent), but left in their prime leaving questions about what could have been.

Very polarizing. He is in both HOF company and huge bust company. It will be interesting at how people view his career years from now. I believe it will always be with the sentiment of what could have been.

I think rather than him being in "huge bust" company it should maybe be "What If?" company.

  14. I think the concern stems from the "character" side of Kelly based on previous places he has been.

I do want to clarify a point that Ballard made when he took over, which many miss-quote.  Many say that Ballard will ONLY take high character guys when building his roster, but Ballard was actually quite clear in saying he wants a roster of high character guys so that they can take in guys with troubled pasts and absorb that and hopefully change the player to fit with the Colts mentality.

I would say we are now in a position with so many great young leaders that we can now do such a thing.

I am equally going to admit that I have not seen enough of Chad Kelly to know what type of player he is, but I thought it was worth clarifying that previous character flaws may not be the sticking point that they used to be.

  15. Well, what a couple of days that was! I deliberately stayed off the forum to avoid the initial responses and take time to consider this.  Here is where I stand as of today:

    1. The timing of the announcement was the worst possible thing that could have happened.  I don't blame Schefter for breaking it, that is his job, but for the fans to find out as Luck was standing on the field is, in my mind, what lead to a majority of booing.  It was shock.  Either way, it should not have happened and when Luck said "it hurt" about hearing those boos, my heart sank for him.

I wonder how this would have played out if he had been able to do it via the press conference he had planned.

    2. I wish Andrew all the best.  He is genuinely my favourite NFL player, I have 2 shirts with his name on them and I even have a Funko Pop figure of him on my work desk.  I cannot imagine what the last 3 years have been like for him in terms of being in a constant cycle of pain and rehab.  As many on Twitter have said, if you haven't played, you don't know, and I don't pretend to.  I trust that Andrew Luck has reached a position where he could not go on.

He is a completely unique character and intensely private.  I think it might be just as likely we hardly ever hear from him again than he ever wears the 12 again at LoS, and that's a real shame.

    3.  This Colts team's arrow is still pointing up!  Yes we are now worse off at the most important position in sports, but let's be clear, we have a great young team with a load of leaders at all positions.  Are there many teams you would swap our GM/HC combination for?  I believe Jacoby has a ceiling much lower than Andrew's, but I also believe we are in a much better position as a franchise than we were before Ballard's arrival.

So, in conclusion, Thank You Andrew.  I hope you find peace and contentment outside of football, that your body and mind heal to where you need it to be and, if you ever get the hunger to try again, you know where we are!

  16. The thing with Andrew is that he is so unlike any other athlete.  His intense privacy, his nerdy personality, the physical toll he has been through, he is just different.

I don't think we can draw any parallels to anyone but, if you were to ask me right now, I think it is more likely we hardly see/hear from Andrew Luck again than we see him wearing #12 at LOS again.......and that sucks for me to say.

  17. I still think that he would.

He has been a (minimum) top 3 receiver most years he has been in the League and has been arguably the best WR of the last decade.

I think the days of the Hall Voters shying away from letting people in because of personality issues are lessened after TO finally got in following backlash, and he was a much more divisive character than Brown.

  18. I think a lot of fans on here are knowledgeable enough to know what the pre-season really is.  Its testing out guys who are on the roster bubble and, even when the 1st team is out there, the plays are as vanilla as they come and so no real insight.

Pre season is basically roster evaluation and fitness work.

  19. A great article, thanks for sharing.  So many interesting portions, although this one stood out for me as a summary of who Ballard and the Colts are, and why we are on such an exciting trajectory:

There is nothing that can replicate the euphoric feeling after a big win. I tell everyone that it is hard to beat the first 20 minutes after a big win. I say 20 minutes because shortly after any game, our minds quickly flip to the upcoming week and the next opponent. I wish I could sit here and write that the strong emotions from a loss only lasted 20 minutes, but that would be a lie. After a loss, I usually can’t sleep trying to figure out what I did wrong and how we are going to get it fixed.

Agreed, I get uncomfortable with the hype.  In my experience with any team, not just Indy is when a team gets a bunch of hype like that, they not only fail to live up to the hype but often fall flat on their face.

Case in point: the 2018 Jacksonville Jaguars.

I know exactly what you mean.  There is always a "media darling" that falls flat.  I don't believe it will be us, but its just that uneasy feeling creeping in...
