  1. IMHO, the reason you don't see more deep balls is more to do with:

    1) There has been little running attack, which allows defensive backs to play coverage instead of respecting run support.

    2) Teams usually play the Colts in a deep zone coverage, to prevent big plays but allowing shorter passing.

    3) Even though he has been sacked not very often, the offensive line is not pass blocking as they have in the past years so he doesn't have as much time.

I fully expect that next year, with a better running attack and the younger lineman getting more experience, you will see Manning airing it out a bit more long to Garcon. Also, since the Colts might end up with the #3 pick, I expect Justin Blackmon to be drafted. Polian said he wants young playmakers. Since Luck wouldn't be available and the Colts traditionally haven't put too much stock in keeping DBs, Blackmon makes the most sense to me.

  2. Why because I want whats best for the future of the team?

I have to agree with you SilentHill. I have been a diehard Colts fan since they were in Baltimore and I was a little kid. I never want the Colts to lose...however....this season is gone. They gain nothing but pride by winning next week against Jacksonville.

I remember back to Harbaughs final year with the Colts. It took two things happening the last week. The Colts lose to the Vikings, I believe. And the Cardinals upset the Falcons. Those two things put the Colts at the #1 pick. Now, imagine what the Cotls would have been if they had NOT gotten Peyton Manning.

I am sure it will work out either way. If we lose to Jacksonville, Andrew Luck will be the future QB in a few years. If we win, I think Justin Blackmon will be the next great Colt WR. And then maybe Tannehill in the 2nd or taking a chance on Kellen Moore in the 4th would be interesting.

  3. I, too, want the #1 pick in draft. No, I hate seeing the Colts losing. But this season is lost. To come out if with Manning next year and Luck as the backup would, five years from now, be worth the sucky year.

Just think of it this way. Five years from now, it might be Luck's Colts buring Ryan Mallet's Patriots. Yeah, I know, Brady wants to play for 20 more years, but we'll see

  4. I really don't understand why people think this team is so far off?? You can see in most games this year that if we didn't have some inept play at QB, we could win. I would fully expect that if Manning is back next year, we are a playoff team. Wayne, Collie, and Garcon didn't suddenly lose the ability to catch and run. The defense has always been shakey.

  5. I read all this speculation that the Colts will cut Peyton Manning, gut the team, draft Luck, and start over again. I am not sure why Bill or Chris Polian would want to do that. I doubt they would last long enough to see the next wave of success. One bad year is one thing, but gutting the team would take at least 2-3 years to be good again.

On the other hand, Manning is pretty much a sure thing. Add a couple of free agents and a good draft, and the Colts are right back in contention.

So, if you are Bill Polian, you are close to retirement, and you are handing the team to your son, do you want to start him off with 2-3 years of being bad??

I expect Manning back and Luck if we have the #1 pick. Getting rid of Manning just makes no sense to me, unless he physically just can't play and has to retire.

  6. I was very, very happy to see a win today. And not to be a negative Nancy, but I honestly don't expect two more wins. Part of the reason we won today was that Tennessee was inept on offense. Brownie was amazing. But I am thinking the Houston defense won't be as kind. So I think winning next week will be a stretch. We still have a very, very bad offense. If it wasn't for Browns huge runs, we wouldn't have done anything today. The last game against Jacksonville is very winnable. I give that a 50/50 chance. So I think the Colts will end up 2-14. I do hope that will be enough to still get the #1 pick. But if we end up at #2, I actually think Justin Blackmon will be the pick. Yeah, I know, we have much bigger holes. But Wayne is getting older and a free agent. If Manning plays a few more years, he will need weapons.

  7. Well, I think what we learned this year is that we HAVE to have two QBs. If we keep Manning and trade the Luck pick, what happens if next year Manning gets hurt? Or if we cut Manning and draft Luck, what if Luck gets hurt?? So it seems to make the most sense to have both of them.

I really do hope we scrap these systems and put in something new. Clearly, Luck has been very successful in Harbaughs west coast offense. Manning can run any offense. So maybe we should move towards a west coast offense so that it is not a "Manning Only Offensive". Defensively, it will probably never happen but I am so tired of the Tampa-2. I do wonder if the reason we have so many injuries is the defensive is on the field so much.

  8. I can't say I expected us to go winless, but it doesn't surprise me the team is playing so poorly. Because I have always seen this with the Colts over the last few years. We have lived with zero room for error for years. If Manning didn't hit the receiver right in stride with a defensive back drapped on him, we get nowhere. The days of us really dominating teams disappeared after 2005 I believe. The last few years, it is always tooth and nail with most teams, coming down to a final Manning drive or Freeney/Mathis getting a sack at the end. But you could tell that without those last minutes, the record could be much different. This was not a dominant team.

That has been what has bothered me about the philosphy on both sides of the ball. The offensive was taylor made for Manning, but I believe he is the only QB in the NFL to be able to run it at that level because you cannot be a hair off on a pass or timing. The "bend but don't break" defense worked fine when Manning could put up 30 points a game.

That is why I asked the question in aother post, how good would the Colts have been with a great HC over the years?? Because when Dungy was here, we had the same problem. Squeeking out so many wins where it could have went the other way.

This is why I don't like free agency and the way players are paid. I know it will never change. But the Colts are made up of a team where probably 8 guys make almost all the money. The Packers will run into that at some point too. If the Colts want to "rebuild" anything, i don't think it starts with getting rid of Manning. Keep Manning if he is health and draft Luck for the future. But I honestly would let go of Wayne, Mathis, Saturday, and Brackett. That is an aweful lot of money these guys have been making, and they are no irreplaceable. I think Angerer is probably a better MLB then Brackett. Mathis is great when Freeney is on the other side and we are ahead, but can disappear at other times. Wayne is fantastic, but Manning has shown you can put Blair White in and still win games. And Saturday has really shown his age the last two years and I think it might be time to put it Pollak or someone else there. That is what I would do if I could play GM. With the money saved there, I would put it into resigning Garcon, getting so secondary or Dline.

That said, I think if Manning is back year health we go to the playofffs.

  9. I agree, however history has also shown us that a great O and poor D gets you to playoffs but doesnt get you the ring.I laughed at the "experts" who try to say the Colts just got bad this year. "Manning never played D, Manning never played ST" No? well they sure made it sound like it when ST allowed a onside kick, and defense couldnt stop brees. Manning played Defense then didnt he? ahh well, their ignorance is just something you have to either have to accept or change the channel. (personally i chose to change the channel.) If/when Manning comes back, what makes you think anything will change? He will have his offense clicking as always but the defense and ST will end it for him like every other year. They only have to put half a team around him and he can win it all. This is the only reason i dont want them to draft Luck. Im sure he will be great but unless he can play safety for 3 years he cant help us.

You and I are on the same page. Yeah, I frankly hate the systems and the lack of help Manning gets. But, the NFL is a passing league now and if you have Peyton Manning with 3-4 good WRs, they are going to just outscore people. Don't mean the defense and ST doesn't suck and will ultimately cost them a SB shot. But its just so odd to watch a team that is 0-12 that would be 9-3 or 8-4 with Peyton.

  10. Also, I think if you look at it from Andrews perspective, what would you rather do?

    1) Sit for a couple off years on a team that, other than this year, has won more games then any team over the last decade?

    2) Start right away for a team like Miami or Washington that has been bad for the last decade?

I am growing to like the idea of both of them on the Colts next year.

  11. After this year what makes you think we could have a winning team for the next decade? I just want to see this team win a game without Manning

I guess the question I would ask is I wouldn't I think that? As was pointed out, this team is mostly the same as the team that made the Super Bowl two years ago. The secondary has gotten weaker, the running attack and OLine better. I think with Manning playing, we would have won 10 games this year and made the playoff. I feel the biggest problem the team has had was Curtis Painter and his inept played. The constant 3 and outs put even more pressure on the defense.

Its odd the perception. I remember before the season thinking that with the new offensive lineman, if there was a solid running attack, the Colts could win it all this year. So Manning goes down, they are 0-12, and everyone acts like there is no talent on the team. These weaknesses have always been there. Manning covered them up well. So there is no reason for me to think if he was playing, they wouldn't return to the playoffs next year. After all, when your offense can put up 30 points a game, you can win a lot of games no matter how bad your defense plays.

So, yeah, I will say that I think if the Colts draft Luck and keep Manning, I think they have a very good chance of winning the SB next year. Manning always had the receivers. But with the better running attack, maybe get a corner at the top of Round 2 and sign a free agent. I see no reason why not. All evidence shows as long as Manning is back there, they likely will be in the playoffs.

  12. I thought this was nice.

Also, Luck saying he has no problem playing for a team with an established QB

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/12/10/andrew-luck-has-no-qualms-about-joining-a-team-with-an-established-quarterback/

But, I guess it does make sense. Lets say he has to sit for 2-3 years, but then can be on a winning team for the next 12 years after that. i would take that over then playing right away for a team like Miami that will likely be bad for another decade. If nothing else, the Colts, other than this year, have shown they will consistently win. I am sure that is very appealing to Luck, even if he does sit.

  13. Why do people keep emphasizing that Manning has had 3 neck surgeries? Emphasizing 3 surgeries makes it seem like the surgeries are diminishing him in some way or that his problem is a chronic issue. The first 2 surgeries were an attempt to try to stop the pain he was having and to try to keep him from having the major fusion surgery. In hindsight, he probably wishes he would have had the fusion surgery in the first place. He probably would have missed a season but he probably wouldn't have had the nerve issue. This is a career saving procedure that Manning had. It's like a pitcher having Tommy Johns surgery because the generally come back stronger than they were before. The bottom line is that the surgery itself is not the issue. He's concerned about the nerve regeneration so he can gain the strength back in his arm.

I am so glad you pointed that out as I had meant to write that at some point. The first two opeerations were just to try to save from having the fusion. I, personally, have technically had two surgeries on my back, but the first one was to prevent the second one. So it is not accumulative. I could have had the second one out of the gate and call it good.

  14. It seems to be a popular topic that someone calls for Bill and Chris Polians heads. I think the easy part is to say they should be fired. But for the people who are so passionate about that, what I would like to know is who do you suggest we replace them with? I would be curious as to what people you feel would be more qualified?

I have been a Colts fan since I saw them as a little kid in 1975. In the time since then, the Colts have been bad more then they have been good. And having a bad GM was a huge part of that, as we just didn't get very good players. Once Bill Polian came on board, I was so happy to have a guy with such a great track record at finding gems in the draft and undrafted. So I am one person who really doesn't want to see the Polians ran out of town because I don't want to go back to how it was before.

So firing them is the easy part. Who replaces them?

  15. So...fire Bill Polian and replace him with who??? Good GM/talent evaluators at his level just don't grow on trees. Firing Polian is a popular topic, but I really want to know what the suggested plan is to replace him? From 1979-1998 the Colts have been mostly bad with bad drafts. Do we want to go back to that?? I sure don't. Bill bothers people, but he is one of the best talent evaluators in the NFL. Sure, it was a mistake to build a team around one guy without a backup QB who could fill it. But as Jim Irsay pointed out, 12 years of success and one bad season doesn't mean you first Bill Polian.

  16. I think what makes it really difficult is that amount of time Luck would have to wait. I am clearly speculating, but I think if Manning regains his strength, he will play at least the last four years of the contract. He clearly misses playing football and he has now had it taken away from him for a year. I think he comes back with a vengence. But drafting Luck or any other QB this year is problematic because I am guessing they don't see the field until their fifth year. So, in my scenerio, why even pick a QB right now, other then a developmental player? For example, Kellen Moore is a guy that might go in like the 3rd round who might be able to produce in the NFL, but you don't have that huge investment in him. But then pick the next QB in a few years.

For example, lets say the Colts can trade the Luck pick for three #1 picks (I have heard that is what it would be worth, but who knows). So for the next three years the Colts have another teams #1 pick. Well, Luck likely won't be good for a couple of years, so the Colts would likely have a high draft pick for the next three years. So i can see them getting a QB in a few years.

I honestly hate the situation. i wish this was two years down the road and Manning had two years left. Then getting Luck would be such a great transition. But I believe Peyton has too much elite football left in him to retire in a year or two.
