  1. The secondary biggest problem was/is lack of talent. Our previous secondary coach, Alan Williams, was just hired as the DC of the Vikings so at least one organization thinks he has some coaching ability. The only way our secondary will improve will be to bring in players with talent.

On a side note, I think you can pretty much pencil in Leslie Frazier for being first coach fired next season. What a horrible move for DC. You pick the guy who has arguably the worst secondary in the NFL??

  2. I am unsure of how more clearly Jim Irsay has to say that if Peyton is healthy, he will be the QB for the Colts in 2012. He also no QB in this years draft or next years draft is going to be as good as Peyton Manning, and that people need to understand that.

    Am I missing something?

And I agree that the hiring of a defensive coach likely means the offense will likely be pretty much the same.

  3. Our offense has been good, but I think there is another side to it. It is very unbalanced. We have to have a better running attack and stop being so predictable. Our offensive philosophy has caught on with other teams like the Packers and Saints who run about lots of points and then play defense to cause turnovers. But the more balanced teams beat them, as what has happened to us too many times. I really want a more balanced team. Irsay said that.

  4. I can agree with the rest, but this is news to me. If anything, Gruden was renowned for not having the patience to deal with young QBs, preferring to deal with veterans instead. He ran with Donald Hollas and Jeff George (both in their early 30s at the time) in Oakland before moving onto a 34 year old Rich Gannon (and left with Gannon still as the starter, at age 36.) He didn't develop Marques Tuiasosopo (I think I spelled it right) a lick, though he was only there in his first season.

Tampa Bay? Started with 34 year old Brad Johnson, ran with him until he was 36 and inserted a 29 year old Brian Griese. This was 2004, a year after he drafted Chris Simms in the 3rd. Started Simms and Gradkowski the next two seasons, neither impressed. Started Jeff Garcia, 37, the next. He ended with a combo of Garcia and a now 30 something Griese.

All in all, I don't think he developed any QB, though he certainly helped Gannon's career. What I see is a guy who has no patience for young QBs and has never properly developed one in his career. Who'd he develop? Steve Young in his one year with San Fran? Mike Holmgren has more claim to that. Not to mention I think Gruden was just quality control.

Good points, but I would say this. He really hasn't had a really good young QB as a HC to develop. Shaun King? He had seven mediocre vets he did much with. His reputation came from working as a coordinator. I don't think Bill Walsh could develop Shawn King.

  5. ummm tressel lives in florida too buddy. Jon Gruden has already said he isnt coming back to coach, he likes being in the booth

I kinow Tressel lives in that area. But trying to read Irsays tweets, I don't know that it is such a surprise anymore if Tressel were hired because it is rumored so much. So if he is looking to really surprise, Gruden would do that because nobody has heard anything about them even talking. Gruden has said he is retired, but he also has said he would love to coach Peyton Manning. He may change his mind.

  6. Since Irsay says we will have a coach soon and there will be some surprises over the next few weeks, I am curious who you think the HC will be after that is said. I know Tressel is getting a lot of press in that area. But my darkhorse pick is Jon Gruden.

    1) He is very good with the West Coast offense, which is pretty much what the Eagles have run under Reid. Grigson is already schooled in getting players for that type of team.

    2) He is still considered a great developer of NFL QBs. Very enticing for Andrew Luck and very QB friendly for Peyton Manning.

    3) He has never stopped his gushing of Peyton Manning.

    4) He lives in Florida and that is where the Irsay jet has been rumored to have been.

I honestly think Gruden is a good HC. The problem with him, with many coaches, is that he started getting too much input in personnel. And he never had a real good QB at TB. But if he simply coached, he could be very good. He fits the profile.

That is my surprise pick. Curious who you all think the HC will be?

  7. I used to be all in favor of the Colts trading the #1 pick. But I have switched to wanting them to pick Luck. Even if they get three #1 picks, they may never pick high enough to get an impact QB again. And what if Mannings knee goes out next season and we are back to the same thing again?

The only part that scares me is Jim Irsay putting RGIII in the conversation. Reminds me of 1998. I was stunned that someone would even put Ryan Leaf in the same breathe as Peyton Manning. Andrew Luck, IMHO, is so far above any other QB who has come out of the draft in the last five years, I am not sure how there is even a thought on someone else!!

  8. OK, fair enough.

That is a question you have to ask yourself though when you're dealing with a son or brother or relative of another successful player/coach.

It's way to easy to get caught up in name recognition.

Very good point. I and I completely agree with you. I would rather have some guy named Jim Franklin who is a hidden genius somewhere then recycle Jeff Fisher because people know his name.

  9. Why are people saying Tressel would be catastrophic? I mean, compared to whom? Who out there is automatically better? And no, saying "anybody with NFL experience" isn't an answer. There's no validity to that. Also, hating him because you have no idea what happened with the player scandal, hating him because he beat your team in a big game, or hating him because you root for Michigan doesn't carry any weight. Those things are arbitrary and mean nothing when evaluating a coach.

I'm not saying I want him as our head coach, but as far as the college-to-pro thing goes, he's got about the best resume possible, and he coached a pro-style system. Ohio State had NEVER seen success like it did under Tressel. He dominated Michigan like no OSU coach before him, he won the Big 10 title with frightening regularity, and he made multiplte national championships and beat the then consensus "best NCAA team ever" from Miami for the title. (That Miami team, by the way, produced about two dozen draft picks in one year.)

Nice post. Say what you want but Tressel has won everywhere he has coached. I could care less about tattoos.
