Jags def is going to be nasty. I think this team is only a solid QB and RB away. AFC south is going to keep getting more tough!

They need a lot of help on the OL as well. You're right though. The division is quickly becoming very competitive.

Well when speaking of "load blowing" The 2013 class that is non extant on the Colt's roster, would be using the precious cap space that has to be held onto.  The same space that we would spend re-upping 1, maybe 2 studs from that whiffed class, we can freely spend on 1 or 2 studs of a Free Agent nature.  Thusly, it has everything to do with your aforementioned post, and little to do with said load blowing.

Life isn't that black and white. You can't just say because the 2013 draft failed we can use some bucket of extension dollars that were set aside for that class on 2017 Free Agents. It completely ignores every other signing/extension/decision that has taken place between then and now that has already compensated for the lack of help from that draft.

LMAO. Man you guys are funny. Not just sports, but in your life in general.... Why would you expect anything less than the best????

What are you even talking about?

Maybe some of us consider being financially prudent as the best course of action. This isn't UK Basketball or the New York Yankees. You can't just throw money at the wall and expect to be successful.

seriously?  Glad we don't have anyone to resign from Grigson's 2013 class then, because following your logic, they'd all have to be let go.....

It's not logic. It's math. You don't blow your entire load on two guys when you have all kinds of issues with depth.

If Grigson's 2013 class wasn't such a steaming pile of %, we wouldn't even be having these discussions because we could just fill out the roster with affordable contracts and look to the draft for talent. Not really sure what that has to do with my original point anyway.

    Yes we can?

Technically, we CAN. But, we shouldn't. You add those salaries up with dollars allocated to rookies, to Butler/Turbin/Punter, to rollover for next year and injury insurance, and you're not left with much to actually fill out the roster.

    Kind of interesting...

    This really isn't that surprising.

He has all kinds of talent but I've felt for a while that Moncrief only shows up once he's inside the 20. He's a TD vulture that disappears in the middle of the field.

I desperately want pass rush in the first round.     But Reddick would be an exception to the rule for me.    I think he oozes NFL talent and I think he's got TOUGHNESS and WINNER written all over him.

I'm NOT a big fan of inside linebackers in the first round,  but for the right guy,  and I think Reddick is that type of guy,   I'd make an exception.     Just too good.

Yep. Kind of reminiscent to last year with Kelly. Rarely see Centers taken in the first but when it's such a huge need and the guy is a homerun prospect at the position, sometimes it just comes together for you.

Philly paid the entire signing bonus.    The numbers are spread over 5 years because they're pro-rated,  but that's NFL math.     The dollars were paid when the contract was signed.    Kendrick already has that money.

So, the Colts would just pay his salary plus the roster bonuses you see,  but NOT the signing bonus money.   That ship already sailed for Philly,  not the Colts.

Believe me,  NFL math can make your head explode,  but in this case,  it's good for Indy.     In the case of Dwayne Allen,  it's good for New England.

Gotcha. Thanks for the explanation. I haven't spent a lot of time reviewing cap complexities so this is good info to know.

I'd agree with you except the fact if Luck wants 2 or 3, possibly 4 super bowls. We need to win now. We aren't going to win 3 or 4 in a row like the Patriots. It is too hard to do that now days. We have the cap space. We might as well sign players that upgrade our roster. Yes we have to be smart. But our division is getting ready to get a whole lot tougher, and we can NOT sit back and wait it out. We have Luck, but we do need a better team to compete with the big boys.

I get what you're saying. But, if that's true, what Luck wants and what is realistic are two completely different things. We don't need to win right now for Luck to get 2 Super Bowls. Manning was 31 when he won his first. Elway was 38. Plunkett was 34. Staubach was 30. Bart Starr was 33. Obviously the league has changed a lot over time, but my point remains. We need to be cautious about how we spend precious cap room.

As far as 3-4 Super Bowls, only 4 QB's in the history of the NFL have at least 3 SB wins. I don't think that's a fair expectation to put on anyone.

As far as staying competitive with the division, I think that's a good point. I just personally would rather roll the cap money forward if we don't find guys that would be a good fit.

Assuming we trade for Kendricks, and I thought that got shot down yesterday,  he is set to make $11 Million over the next TWO years and 18 Million over the next 3 years.     His contract is very reasonable.

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/mychal-kendricks-9856/

As for how he plays,  I'd take the judgement of Ballard, the coaches and the scouts over fans every time.

Maybe I'm reading the Spotrac page wrong. It looks like to me like his signing bonus is spread throughout the life of the contract which adds $3.2 million. Does this stay on the Eagles books if traded?

Who cares? he is a 3-4 ILB playing in a 4-3 he doesn't fit there anymore. Plus he is cheaper to trade for then sign in Free Agency.

    Who cares?

The guy is going to make $16 mil+ the next two years. I would be shocked if someone paid him over $8 mil per with the production he's had in Philly. I don't give a crap if he's 26 years old. Poor performance doesn't discriminate.

Combine that with the fact that you're giving away a young WR with potential in either scenario. Good grief. Some of you guys have lost your minds this offseason.

    Never go full Madden.

  12. Honest question, what do people see in Kendricks? The guy has been less effective than any of our starting linebackers the past 3 years and seems to be regressing. Philly is willing to dump him for absolutely nothing. Why would he be better than either Morrison/EJax or whatever 3rd-5th rounder we could select instead?

I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

Not sure why I would. It doesn't make a lick of difference to me either way.

Bottom line, Gilmore has a ton of natural talent that hasn't been forced to be accountable. It's possible the change of scenery elevates him the same way it did for Vontae.

Wow. I like Ballard. But I'm not gonna like Ballard's first free agency if he doesn't sign any top free agents. We can't wait 3 years to be Super Bowl contenders. Luck should have a super bowl by now and we can't waste anymore of his time.

No. Luck is 27 not 37.

Going all in to win now is the worst thing that Ballard could do. Some of these contracts are going to hamstring teams for the next 3-5 years. 12 mil per for a 35 year old tackle? Estimated 13-15 mil for a CB (Bouye) that has had ONE strong year with an outstanding defense when the draft has 10-12 guys with grades in the top 2 rounds? 12-13 mil for a RG when we have young guys to fill the role already? I'll pass every time if that's the going rate. Build through the draft. Supplement with affordable depth.

well, if im unbiased and the offers are all about the same, im picking the colts, Browns and Jags are bigger dumpster fires than us

I could definitely see the Jags having as much as or more pull than Indy for certain players. That defense is only going to get better. They have some weapons on offense and there's still a chance that a strong OL turns Bortles into a pretty solid QB. He looked shellshocked from how bad his line was last year.
