It would take a miracle.  The pats are a veteran team that has decades of experience in the playstyle we're only just now getting acclimated to.  nearly every facet of the game they beat us straight up on experience, and Belichick is one of the few head coaches I don't trust Reich to be able to outmaneuver.

I’m not sure the Patriots history (other than the coaching staff), has any relevance to overall team experience. Houston, TY, Doyle and others have experience.

We have a big advantage in OL.  It's the one area I can definitely say we're better than them.  But the Patriots are like 6 deep in quality pass rushers.  It's gonna be war in the trenches between our OL and their DL, and their secondary is second to none right now.  Scoring points on that team is legit tough no matter how you try to do it.

6 deep in quality pass rushers? Against who? I’ll take my chances with the Colts Oline.

And the Patriots have a pretty solid rushing attack too, about a match for ours.  Mack is better than Michel, but James White is basically the player Hines hopes to become someday and I'll give Burkhead a large edge over Wilkins, so their depth blows the doors off ours.  And we're not nearly as good at containing the run so far than they are.

“Their depth blows the doors off ours” A little hyperbole there, don’t you think?

As for the passing game I'll be charitable and leave that at "LOL!"

I’m not going to say Brissett is in Brady’s class but no one would say Brissett is better than Mahomes, either. Keep Brady on the bench. He becomes irrelevant.

Bottom line, the Patriots completely outclass us.  Never say never, Brady does have the occasional bad day at the office just like anyone else, but the Patriots are a class above even KC IMHO.  That defense is incredible.

Well, first of all. You have a different definition of “class” than a lot of us do. I wouldn’t use “class” and Patriots in the same sentence.

Secondly, if I’m not mistaken, the Pats are banged up on the Oline and I think the Colts would be able to get pressure on Brady, if they press their receivers.

So far, you’re right about their defense; they are playing good ball but, they really haven’t played any juggernauts.

I just wonder if the gap between the two teams isn’t overblown in the media and in some fans minds.

  2.   From the perspective of his holders. You can scroll down to Hunter Smith, if you’d rather not read the NE years.

One of the things that stuck out to me is that he’s always taken it personally, when a team brought in other kickers.

So, how much credit goes to AV for his 13 points in the Chiefs game? Is saying he was the sole reason we lost the Chargers game, any different than saying he was the sole reason for us winning the Chiefs game?

Did you think he was done? Do you still have concerns or are you in a “wait and see” mode.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out this year. Will he be the GOAT or scapegoat? Maybe greatness is not defined by how many times you succeed alone but what you do when you fail?

    GO COLTS!

funny thing is, I said we needed a Dec 2006 Jags/Colts type game to win, and thats what we got.  That game, the Jags did to the Colts what we did to the Chiefs Sunday night, run at will, and whoop up on the QB.

TN released him yesterday, sign Parkey last night

If it was up to some fans, we could have had Parkey. Glad Reich stuck with AV.

    • - Colts were able to run the ball.
    • - Create turnovers.
    • - Vinatieri was perfect on his FG attempts.

    - Were able to keep Mahomes and co out of the end zone after giving up the first TD.

    - Were able to stop the run.

    - Won the turnover ratio

    - Scored more points than the other guys.

Glad you mentioned AV: if he got criticized for the first two weeks and became the sole reason for the week one loss, then it would follow he should get some credit for his points Sunday night. You could make the argument that the Colts would have lost, if not for him.

this makes a lot of sense, thank you

do you expect the colts to play more of an aggressive defense moving forward? 4 man rush with man coverage?

I would think schemes change, depending upon opponents or situations, even within a game.

Here’s a breakdown from Baldy, regarding the Defensive coverage last night. (He needs to learn how to pronounce the players’ names). haha

I appreciate the fight from TY and can understand the desperation to have him in to elevate our chances but... at the same time this scares me a bit.

If you’re scared, get a dog.

  7.    I can see a “blood bath”, BUT the Colts can win this game if they run the ball successfully, keep Mahomes on the sideline and play like they’re capable of playing, when the defense is out on the field.

Maybe Wilson does better at FS? Moore, Desir, Willis and YaSin are all decent DBs.

I hate this idea. Voluntarily taking your best players off the field makes no sense to me.

I say do all the other stuff you suggested -- less preseason, bigger rosters, etc. -- but just add two byes for each team. The regular season would be 19 weeks, but each team only plays 16 games. You only play TNF coming off a bye, and other scheduling rules to improve the quality of the games played. The league continues to dominate TV, adding two more weeks of real football.

I like the idea of Thursday night only after a bye and the extra bye for each team.

But if individual players have to play 18 regular season games, what would happen to their salaries? And even though the league went from 14 to 16 games years ago, the 16 game history records lose a bit of relevance.

And although having to make your best players inactive for two games isn’t ideal, it would add an element of strategy that coaches and/or GMs would have to deal with.

Here is the reason this wouldn't work.  People pay to come see the quarterbacks.

Having 2 games a year where the starting QB just doesn't play isn't going to do a lot of good in terms of money.

Also an issue is the timing of the beginning of the season.  You could make an argument for starting on labor day weekend.  But starting before labor day weekend is a hard sell.  At the same time I don't think you could argue for extending the season later into January.  The only way around this would be to get rid of the bye week.

I just think it's a bad idea all around.

I see your point but if the league is determined to play 18 games and you don’t limit players to a 16 game season, the records would be skewed going forward.

If a starting QB is hurt now and a backup has to play, the game still draws, if it counts in the standings.

I hope they don’t mess with the season at all but if they do, I don’t know what would make sense considering all the ramifications

  10.    If the Colts are going to win this game, they are going to have to keep Mahomes on the sideline.

If there’s one advantage the Colts have, it’s the ability to run the ball. If Mack balls out, (and is healthy), there may not be a need for Wilkins (except for the occasional breather).

On the other hand, if Mack is hurt and the Colts need to run between the tackles, Wilkins is more of a power back than Hines.

  11. . Normally, games are won or lost in the trenches and our Oline does have to dominate to run the ball and our Dline does have to get pressure and get home.

But I’ve heard it said by many: PRESS coverage by our CBs!! Mess up their timing. If they play soft, it’s going to be a loooong night!

On offense, we can’t have drops or penalties. We can’t be ourselves. The Colts are going to have to play their best game to have a chance, including a great game plan by Reich and Eberflus.

  12.    Don’t know if this has been brought up but it appears the NFL is pushing for a 17 game schedule (with each team having to play a neutral site).

I don’t like the extra game corrupting the records (passing yards per year), etc. And the neutral site has got to cause logistical nightmares.

       I’d much rather see:

18 game schedule but each player can only play 16 games and be inactive for 2 (at the discretion of the respective coaching staffs).

So, NE would have to make Brady inactive for two games, for instance.

      Two less preseason games

Keep the same amount of playoff games

Rosters go to 60 players to accommodate extra games and supplement inactive players.

       It would:

        1. Add an extra strategy for the coaching staff (when to sit certain starters)

        2. Keep 16 game individual records relevant

        3. Give season ticket holders 1 more regular season and 1 less preseason game to pay for.

         4. Provide extra players a chance for a career.

          5. Penalize coaching staffs that are forced to sit their starters at the end of the year, if they haven’t done so.

          6. Possibly extend the season a week or two into Feb.

I’d be happy keeping things status quo, but you know some kind of expansion is coming.

        Thoughts?

  13.   First, let me say, Rick Venturi seems very knowledgeable. He’s obviously been around and offers insight. So, I respect his opinion.

It’s just hard to take all of the “I told you so” kinda self-promotion he does, but I guess he’s just promoting his “brand”. The other thing that comes into play is his age and when a man (or woman) gets older, it’s natural to want to feel significant.

There’s a proverb that says; “ Let another man praise you and not your own lips”. I just wish he would tone the self-adulation down a notch.

That being said, this was an interesting broadcast regarding the loss Sunday and insight into the upcoming game with the Chiefs.

  14.   Does believing the Colts can win this, constitute “insanity”? If it does, call me crazy. Me, the Colts players, coaching staff and a few fans who think they are perfectly capable of doing so.

  15.   If any of you remember the hit Tatum put on Daryl Stingley, (it paralyzed him), one of the reasons the league isn’t letting these kinds of hits go.

That hit on Doyle was deliberate and I’m glad to see the NFL not putting up with that kind of crap. I was a little surprised to see Gruden complain, because it was so obvious.

  16.   I heard a local Philadelphia Hall of Fame sportswriter (Ray Didinger) make this statement; “ Going from good to great is a matter of consistency”.

True in so many ways for players. To do things consistently right will bring success, not only for the individual, but for their respective units, as a whole.

I suppose there has to be consistency in coaching, but there’s that element of surprise against certain opponents or in certain situations.

The Colts are good now. We’ve all been through some tough times as Colts fans. But great is right around the corner and they are going to have to be great to get where they want to go.

I found quotes about going from good to great that I thought had relevance:
